I've assigned this book as reading for my Million Dollar Consulting College Grad School. It's a superb history of a group of people who have defined business strategy, orgnaizational development, culture change, and other business dynamics. It is historical, including people like Elton Mayo; diverse, with people like Mary Parker Follet; and contemporary, with people like the recently deceased Peter Drucker. Each of the subjects rates a brief biography which includes his or her own background, contributions, and legacy. The book is really a required piece for any serious business consultant.

Do not get this book! It is confusing and boring. I had to buy this tiny book for a class taught, you guessed it, by Dr. Hall himself. It was painful and unclear (both the class and the book). Do not waste $62 on this book...unless you have to get it for the class, in which case I feel for you.
This is quite simply one of the worst "text books" I've read........2006-01-08
I have recently begun an Organizational Behavior class as part of my Masters Degree Program in which this book is used as the primary text. As I have read this book I have come to the belief that it should not be used as a text of any sort. It is much less of a text than it is a very poorly written book report. Granted as the description notes it does take a sociological standpoint, though my opinion of Sociologists is very low, being that they are extremely non-committal in stating or taking any position what so ever on a topic. At any rate, the book is 50% commentary and another 25% vague reference to the hundreds of various studies and papers written on the topics being discussed. As for the remaining 25%, the writer has scrounged the bottom of the vocabulary barrel in writing a book that has the reader continuously looking up words in an effort to translate the very few points the book ever actually makes. At the end of the day you are left with the idea that the entire book has been spent telling you that nothing is nothing and everything is everything nobody knows why.

It was painful and unclear (both the class and the book). Get James Q. Wilson's Bureaucracy or Jeffery Pfeffer's Managing With Power instead, you'll thank me.

Misguided Reviews- I loved this book.......2007-04-27
I know that Cell Biology is a difficult subject to master, so there will always be shortcomings in a textbook's ability to communicate the subject in an understandable fashion. However, I thought this book was awesome. I followed the text entirely. I loved the fact that this text was an introductory text and didn't assume that the reader has previous knowledge of the subject. The authors explained everything. In later chapters of the book, they would summarize previously mentioned material, and reference you to the appropriate section of the book if you needed a more in-depth recap. The figures and tables are incredibly helpful in visualizing what is going on within each molecular process. Like I said, loved this book. I will say that I didn't find the CD-ROM helpful at all, but I won't dock points from such a good book for that reason. Good luck to everyone with your studies. Hope you enjoy the text.
Know one of the authors... Still hate the book........2007-04-20
I am a student taking a Cellular bio class from Jeff Hardin. While he is a terrific lecturer, I, like many of these reviewers, find the book extremely difficult to follow.
The index is incomplete. The text will highlight a word as if it is the definition (see cis-acting element), while the glossary definition includes information merely glossed over in text. Isn't the text where you are supposed to get a complete description as well as examples, while the glossary provides the concise definition? The glossary definition of endocytosis doesn't even include the directionality of the vesicle. The section on the Calvin cycle is needlessly complex. I found myself viewing an overview on the MIT website, so that I finally understood what the book was getting at. Then I went back to the book and understood the reading.
I shouldn't have to look up each topic online to get an overview before I read the book. For most courses I take, the book is the reference we refer to first. Not so for this course with this book. This is doubling the amount of homework time spent on an already complex topic. The diagrams include many acronyms with little or no explanation. Pretty pictures, but they don't elucidate the key points without a different text for explanation.
I am almost done with this semester and am on my way to getting an AB, the equivalent of either an A- or a B+ at other universities. I do not feel as if I have learned much for the amount of time I have spent, and I am an extremely hardworking honors student.

This book is not "The World of the Cell"!!!!! It is the Notebook companion and you should CLEARLY state that in your title!!!!! This book itself is poorly put together, and I as a student found it to be a waste of paper. BUT THE MAIN SOURCE OF MY FRUSTRATION IS THAT AMAZON DID NOT CLEARLY STATE THAT THIS IS NOT THE TEXTBOOK BUT THE NOTEBOOK!!!!!!

I used this text for pre-med biology course-- I was simulataneously taking Biochemistry as well, but more on that later.
The text, while not overwhemingly as detailed as other reviewers write, was all in all okay, but fell short in many areas. One of them is the distinct typographical and grammatical errors that riddled, what seemed, to be the only chapters we covered. There were many sentences that were run-ons, which disrupted the learning and flow of the text (and, in my opinion, a textbook backed by such a major publisher as this, errors like that are out of the question).
Sometimes, for instance in the TCA chapter, I felt that the material presented on Oxidative Phosphorylation seemed out of order, and just a bit too condensed.
The photosynthesis chapter was utterly horrible.
The exercises at the end were poorly written, and seemed to ask esoteric questions about common topics. The answers to these questions were esoteric still.
I felt that the only saving grace about this were the wonderful pictures: I liked how each chapter opened up an exhaustive diagram. Other than that, this is book pretty much only a decent cell bio book, but no biochemistry one.
Good Cell Book for those who need to know biochem.......2005-07-31
I think the recent reviews of this book have been unfair. I have looked at the beginning chapters of this recent (6th)revision and I think the book has remained a great quality Cell Biology book. As stated in other reviews, the book is detailed, but most good schools will require you to know at least the level of detail presented in this book and likely more. I found this book to be an excellent preparation for more advanced classes in Cell Biology (which used Alberts) and Biochemistry. The book is organized to make sure the students have the underlying knowledge to successfully understand more complex concepts later. The only major drawback of this book is that Alberts exists and the eloquence and sophistication in Alberts is lacking in Becker's World of the Cell. That said, I still recommend this book for people needing to know and understand all the basics of Cell biology/biochemistry.

The purpose of this task analysis was to provide a workable document that they could use in the development of pier side ship-handling scenarios for their simulator. The task analysis not only identified the general procedures and methodologies used by a conning officer during pier side ship-handling evolutions but also provided inventories of the perceptual cues that were used specifically for these evolutions. The approach taken was to use a Goals, Operators, Methods, Selection Rules (GOMS)-like model to represent the logical sequence of methods used by the conning office Critical Cue Inventories (CCI) were then developed to supplement the GOMS model by providing a list of the cues used along with detailed descriptions of why the cue was used and how it was visually or audibly identified. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: While developing a Virtual Environment (VE) Ship-handling simulator for the Surface Warfare Officer School (SWOS) in Newport, RI, researchers at the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) in Orlando, FL recognized the idea of integrating an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) to provide feedback to the student The system, known as a Virtual Commanding Officer (VCO), would provide instructional feedback to the student to ensure that beneficial training occurs. The VCO would allow a student to conduct valuable training without a human operator present. The approach taken was to survey cognitive architectures to find a notation to form a specification for feedback generated and delivered from a Commanding Officer to a ship-handler in training during an Underway Replenishment (UNREP). The cognitive architecture called SOAR was selected. A SOAR-like architecture was used to develop a VCO-ITS specification that resembles three Commanding Officer training method profiles. The profiles were then reviewed by qualified Surface Warfare Officers to validate their accuracy. The result was a specification for a VCO-ITS with validated domain content in the form of three profiles. This specification was provided to NAWCTSD in support of their future efforts in the development of a VE Ship-handling simulator.

A Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) develops ship handling proficiency during his or her first and second ship tours, then spends two or more years ashore. Upon returning to sea duty, an officer is expected to be proficient in ship handling even though it has been two years since the last shipboard evolution. Ashore SWOs were tested to determine whether their ship handling skills or knowledge about navigation rules had degraded over time. During the first phase of the experiment, subjects were immersed in a virtual environment to assess procedural knowledge of a ship handling task. The second phase of the experiment, designed to measure declarative knowledge of ship handling, consisted of a short written test. The results of the experiment showed no deterioration of SWOs ship handling skills over time. The results did show a significant deterioration of declarative knowledge of navigation rules. Actual or potential applications of this research include revising current Surface Warfare Officer training programs to account for the fact that not all knowledge is lost to memory equally. Periodic refresher training for SWOs on shore duty is also suggested by these results.

Essential Reference for Seakayakers.......2006-06-24
As a kayak instructor, I highly recommend you purchase this book and keep it handy to read and review on a regular basis. It is not only great for beginners but also seasoned paddlers. One of the most overwhelming aspects of this sport is figuring out what gear you really need - especially when you see the price tags in all the "gucci" paddling stores these days. Doug Alderson brings kayaking back to basics by giving you hints on how you can enhance your kayaking kit with things from around the house or the dollar store. His tips are usually so simple they're ingenious. (Did you know that when Doug isn't paddling he's a high school industrial arts teacher?). Moreover, his advice on how to plan a trip, stay safe, and have a hassle free camping experience are by far the best I've seen, a testament to Doug's vast seakaying experience. I use this book as one of my main instructing references since students often ask me questions that are well covered in this book. The more I read it, the more I appreciate how much thought went into each paragraph and illustration.

confidence and knowledge for even the newest paddlers.......2001-06-13
I started paddling just 2 months ago and bought this book before my first venture on the water. After reading it I felt like I had a basic idea of the kinds of things that could happen to me and what I could do about them. It contains advice from many experienced paddlers who want to help you avoid their mistakes and have a great time paddling. Being new to the sport I didn't even know what questions to ask - this book covers topics I hadn't even thought about. It gives advice on the best fabric choices in clothes for the weather, what to pack on the boat, what to have waiting for you at the end of your trip (hot cocoa among other things), how to tie some basic knots, how to scare bears away, how to pee without leaving the kayak (valuable information for women - like me). It's interesting, fun to read and not at all didactic. It includes many tips for more experienced paddlers and I will reread it often as I advance in the sport. The tips are offered by paddlers who obviously love their sport and want to share their great time with everyone else.

Great for listening to CD while driving.......2007-01-05
The CD's provided give good basic words for greetings, asking simple questions, and teaching numbers. We went to the Czech Rep in Nov, 30 days after receiving the lessons and were able to do basic communication. In Prague most people have a basic or good understanding of English, but out in the countryside, the little Czech we learned was useful when ordering meals, buying something. The number system and pronunciation were very helpful.
The CD's at times tended to be overly redundant, but they were convenient to use since there were no written lesson plans to follow. I managed to listen to all the CD's at least twice. I recommend this program.

the lessons are straight forward repeating words until they start to sink in.it is not an easy language to learn especially at my age over 50!but it is well worth the effort and is apreciated by the locals.
Best way to quickly learn Czech.......2006-10-05
Prior to my trip to Prague I bought both the Pimsleur CDs and the Colloquial Czech CDs by James Naughton. I was a true beginner, and the Naughton series completely overwhelmed me - they talk way too fast! This series was fantastic, though. They speak slowly and clearly, start with the basics, and repeat words often as you go through the lessons so you don't forget what you have learned in previous chapters. The conversations focus on topics such as hotels, money, asking where things are, etc. so it is definitely most useful for tourists.
Falls a little short........2006-03-19
The Pimsleur course are the best introduction I've seen to a foreign language; however, I was sorely disappointed with this course in particular.
I was so impressed with Pimsleur's 'Speak and Read' ten lesson course, that felt I had to get more. Not being able to wait for the 30 lesson Comprehensive course whose that has just recently been released, I bought the 16 lesson Conversational course. I was expecting the first 10 lessons to be those that I had already listened to. I was delighted to find that, though they overlapped in material, they were not the same. I also found the pronunciation much clearer than in the 10 lesson set.
My disappointment arose from the fact that, unlike the earlier ten lesson set, the 'Instant Conversation' course moves excruciatingly slowly. It seemed to spend five or six lessons going over variations of how to ask "would you like to...". I understand that we need repetition to learn a language, but isn't the point of buying the CD's that you can listen to them more than once? Some of the lessons introduced, literally, fewer than 6 words.
I feel that having such a course is essential when you start to learn Czech. If I hadn't already listened to the earlier 10 lesson set, I think I still would have found this course slow, but would have felt it a $48 well spent. As it is though, I found it disappointing, and looking at similar reviews for the Comprehensive Course, I feel fortunate that my impatience saved me from spending the extra $180 for it. Having some exposure to the language and pronunciation, I am now more comfortable learning from a book. I find the book 'Czech' by David Short, from the 'Teach yourself' series to be very useful.
Learning the Czech Language.......2006-02-25
This is the the best. I have purchased other books with audio tapes to try to learn the Czech Language. The Pimsleur CD's I purchased have helped me more than anything. I look forward to purchasing the remaining lessons and my next visit to the Czech Republic to be able to speak and understand my relatives.

I like this book. It's well organized and easy to follow. It's broken up into 28 easy to understand chapters and is a great introductory book into the exciting world of iPod ownership and the portable digital music world. Everything from accessories to managing your music and even using your iPod as a hard drive. Wow! It's a great pocket guide and reference. Now if I could just find something like this that could help me out with my new Motorola Razor cell phone, the world would be a better place!
Outdated? - Perhaps.......2006-03-10
The previous reviewer dismissed this as outdated and suggested if you don't already own an iPod, to avoid the book. I bought the book after making the decision to buy but before I had actually made the purchase. I'm glad I bought it. I found the book highly informative both in the features and use of the iPod but also with the iTunes software. For me, it is indispensible. If you're planning on purchasing an iPod, or already have one and are trying to get maximum functionality out of both the iPod and iTunes, this is money very well spent.
already outdated.......2005-10-28
To some extent this book, which has just been published, is already outdated. Apple has just released the Nano and announced that it will soon discontinue its iconic iPod models in favour of the Nano. So if you do not have an iPod, I suggest you avoid this book.
Otherwise, it can quickly help you with better usage of your iPod. Perhaps to share music with your friends, which is one example discussed in the text.
The book also covers iTunes, which is run on a regular Mac. Many features that can be tweaked, like the Equalizer. And the book shows how to access the iTunes music store, which is one of the biggest sellers of online music.
