Book Description
The restoration of the Florida Everglades, the largest ecosystem restoration project in the world, is now underway. Missing from the original plan, however, is a study of the region's cities and farms and the economic impact their growth will make on this already endangered ecosystem. This book provides that analysis. Richard Weisskoff applies the widely-used Regional Economic Modeling Inc. (REMI) model to forecast the future of South Florida's six million-person, $300 billion economy. In addition, he supplies four significant pieces to the model, namely, detailed projections for agriculture, investment, tourism, and restoration spending. By integrating these and the results of a second economic modeling system (IMPLAN), he traces out three development paths for the region to the year 2030, and the demands for water and urban land required for each path. Also featured are the results of two land use/land cover surveys which are then used to measure the change in the value of ecosystem services in the Everglades region. The author provides an economic history of the region and statistically documents the transformation of the original Everglades into the sprawling cities and the sugar-citrus-cattle emporium, all of which share the same fragile ecosystem. The study concludes that the ultimate success of the restoration of the Everglades will depend on choices made regarding the future of the region's cities and farms. While the volume focuses on the Everglades, it serves also as a case study for other such restoration projects. Ecological and environmental economists, regional scientists, planning professionals, and government agencies will find this timely volume of great interest.

Book Description
The chapters of this book were originally presented at the Fourth International Conference on the Biogeochemistry of Trace Elements, in June 1997 at Berkeley, California. The results of that symposium are now available to assist both specialists and those concerned with broader environmental issues. The first four chapters of Fate and Transport of Heavy Metals in the Vadose Zone are devoted to sorption-desorption processes. Subjects include the kinetics of trace metal sorption-desorption, adsorption of nickel and their isotherms, cadmium reactions, and retention mechanisms of both linear and nonlinear types. The next three sections describe complexation and speciation processes. The authors consider the effect of humic and fulvic acids, the binding of copper with organic matter, and the rate of dissolved selenium. Chapters eight through eleven scrutinize the bioavailability and retention of heavy metals and their mobility in the vadose zone. Twelve details plant-available concentration levels for heavy metals in the vadose zone. The last section relates case studies that are relevant to environmental affairs. Features

Book Description
In this classic work that continues to inspire its many readers, Jim Lovelock puts forward his idea that life on earth functions as a single organism. Written for non-scientists, Gaia is a journey through time and space in search of evidence with which to support a new and radically different model of our planet. In contrast to conventional belief that living matter is passive in the face of threats to its existence, the book explores the hypothesis that the earth's living matter air, ocean, and land surfaces forms a complex system that has the capacity to keep the Earth a fit place for life. Since Gaia was first published, many of Jim Lovelock's predictions have come true and his theory has become a hotly argued topic in scientific circles. In a new Preface to this reissued title, he outlines his present state of the debate.

Other Books.......2007-09-03
A really interesting book, and hypothesis. I first noticed this theory, funnily enough, after watching the excellent miniseries 'Edge of Darkness' and some of the writing involved with talking about that show. Well worth a look. The Earth as 'living' in the sense of a being a system, where life and the planet exist in a relationship. This is definitely a thought provoking piece of work.
Earth as an Organism.......2006-08-19
Lovelock is certainly an out-of-the-box thinker. The main point Lovelock drives home is that Earth behaves as an organism. The aim is to get the reader thinking that Earth is alive, and does have the same functions an organism. For example, the chemistry of the atmosphere and the ocean are controlled by life for the purposes maintaining the planet as a haven for life's continuance.
Life does appear to drive the planet away from the expected chemical equilibria. To this I give Lovelock credit for drawing a brilliant parallel that makes the book worth reading. There is a sort of alternate equilibrium under life's influence that hasn't been studied enough. The book really can change the way one looks at Earth. I'm not perfectly convinced with the precision here, but this is far better than picturing random life trying to survive on a otherwise dead world.
However, there were some chapters in the second half that were weak, and seemingly off-the-point. The role of mankind isn't supported as claimed. I'd give this 3 and a half stars if I could.
Not even good science.......2006-04-26
I ordered this book hoping for some scientific evidence supporting what I already knew from personal experience; that there is a gestalt emerging from all of the beings in the universe. An emergent property that some call `the spirit that moves through all things' and some call `god' and I was hoping that this book would call it Gaia. Bah! The author totally ignores the metaphysical evidence and misrepresents the impact of civilization on the natural world. He also misrepresents the relationship tribal aka primitive cultures had with the natural world. Furthermore, this isn't even good science. Typically I pass books on to friends or trade them at a used bookstore. The best thing about this book was how easily the pages tore out to become kindling for my fire. If I could I would give it a negative rating -- don't pollute your mind with this trash.
Brilliant hypothesis, poorly presented.......2005-10-27
In essence, Lovelock says that since evolution started eons ago, all forms of life evolved together resulting not only in balance among themselves and their surroundings, but also in such a way that they regulate the environment, controlling the atmosphere, the salinity of the seas and the temperature. This complex eco-system is presumably an inevitable consequence of the algorithm of evolution running successfully. Want to know if there is life on another planet? Easy, look at the atmosphere.
This comes out in the book, but it is a bit bizarre. Lovelock seems to go from anthropomorphism (the world learning to breath and making decisions) to using scientific terms that the average non-science reader will have to look up. He presents a table on page 63 that I think is incomprehensible unless you understood the work that went into it, which is not presented. He finishes with a plea not to hunt whales, which seems like a strange non-sequester to the book as whole.
As a consequence of this he seems to have appealed to crystal-swinging, horoscope-reading new age wo-wos rather than hard scientists. This is a shame, because the idea is brilliant (thus 4-stars), and could result in decades of research, added to which Gaia is a great name. It seems self-evident that we are part of and completely dependent upon the environment around us. Lovelock has such faith in the self-regulating mechanisms, he rather pooh poohs our ability to mess with it too much. However, it seems to me that evolution and balance takes time - we do things incredibly fast - our ability to warm the globe has only been for a couple of hundred years. We could easily give Gaia a fever, by overcoming her ability to make gentle regulations. If this happens, we do not know what the results will be, but we almost certainly will not benefit from them. As they say; "nature bats last".
Everyone should read this book and, despite its faults, it is readable.
Gaia: A Libertarian Manifesto.......2005-04-30
James Lovelock's book "Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth" reads like a libertarian manifesto. No doubt, many well-intentioned liberal environmentalists will be turned off by his laissez-faire approach to polution, as he believes that Gaia (the Earth-organism) can, and has handled much worse than our man-made pollution of the present day. Likewise, self-absorbed capitalists and fiscal conservatives may feel redeemed by some of Lovelock's claims, and may quote passages of this book to their liberal family members to score points in some future debate.
However, it would be wrong to interpret Lovelock as condoning pollution and the misdeeds of mankind. Lovelock instead implores us to participate in Gaia from a Taoist perspective, by learning to work with, rather than against the ways of the Earth. He believes (as do I) that we can only do this when we fully understand how the Earth has changed throughout history (including the environmental holocausts that the Earth has already endured), and how it presently changes to maintain a global homeostasis.
After reading this book I felt encouraged by the strength and mother Earth, and impressed by her ability to adapt to a wide range of near-cataclysmic events. My only critique of the book is that Lovelock sometimes makes certain leaps in his explanations, which at times left me (a lay scientist) confused as I was reading through them.

Maybe The Book That Did It For Me.......2007-06-28
This book may have been the one that finally sold me on Bill James - he asks alot of logical questions about who should and shouldn't be in the Hall Of Fame and I buy most of what he argues. There are alot of players in the Hall who really shouldn't be in there and some who should be in but for some reason, I don't buy his argument for Ron Santo - the various methods he uses to decide on Hall Of Famers is interesting and I could see it being of some use for future voters. His way of dissecting Drysdale's performances in big games goes a little far to be used as a quantifying factor and I believe Drysdale's records weren't all that great anyway - his argument against Rizzuto holds water with me becoz my father always said Rizzuto would've been nothing if he had played his career in a town like Philly, that he would've been just another good shortstop. The similarity scores and objectivity standards are a good way to judge players, both on their own and against those already in the Hall - in fact, since this book has come out, I think the voting for Hall of Fame candidates has become more stricter and I can see some deserving players NOT getting into The Hall, becoz of books like these - but if James' criticism of the Veterans Committee provoked the changes, I am glad he wrote this book.
Excellent!.......2006-11-04
Good info inside, the Hall of fame looks likme a social club of some veterans players
Fame That Has Too Much Shame.......2006-10-05
I have been sceptical about the Baseball Hall of Fame ever since the enlightened power structure selected Satchel Paige as the first Negro League Baseball inductee, but wanted to place his plaque in a section away from the Major League Baseball enshrinees. The perpetuation of racism in the sport was negated when the ensuing controversy forced the panel to honor Paige and future NLB inductees like the rest of the ball players.
That is why with great interest I purchased this book when it was published more than a decade ago. It did not disappoint then and much of the text is timely today.
James exposes the created history on Cooperstown, NY, being the birthplace of the sport and how the hall of fame was created. The heart of the book is the politics of induction and centers on how the Veterans' Committee - stacked with former Yankees - negotiated an agreement to get the popular Phil Rizzuto inducted. James also writes about the power of certain committee members to get former teammates and friends elected.
Though several of the players James questions why they had not been selected for enshrinement have been elected, too many of his statistical matchups questioning past selections still need answers today.
Nearly 600 pages long, it is a must read for baseball fans who want to understand what the Baseball Hall of Fame is really about.
Outstanding research and thought-provoking prose.......2006-06-21
Baseball's "uber-statistician" Bill James has put together a painstakenly detailed look at Baseball's Hall of Fame process for determining membership. James, with some degree of overkill, goes over the rationale for who's "in" and who's not. Many pages, (this reviewer would believe too many, as a matter of fact) are spent reviewing the vitaes of players like Phil Rizzuto, Don Drysdale, and Pee Wee Reese. Hundreds of other players are covered, however, in this extensively researched work. James certainly is unafraid to let the reader know (early and often) whom he believes is worthy of the honor of being in the HOF.
Baseball historians and fans alike, however, will find plenty of things to like about this book. The head-to-head comparisons of players are outstanding, as is the information that James has included about the history of the HOF. James does an outstanding job tying all of the baseball eras together while trying to show some method of comparing modern player to those from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. If the reader can allow for some of James' pontificating to rear its ugly head periodically throughout the book, then he or she will certainly want to add this work to their baseball collection.
RECOMMENDED FOR ALL BASEBALL FANS, BUT ESPECIALLY THOSE INTERESTED IN BASEBALL HISTORY
Would be a better book if he weren't trying a hatchet job on Rizzuto!.......2006-01-20
Actually, I liked a lot about this book. But early on, he claims that he doesn't mean the book to be a putdown of Phil Rizzuto, and he then proceeds to put Rizzuto down in chapter after chapter. Even when his statistics seem to justify Rizzuto's inclusion in the Hall, he then claims that the statistics are not to be trusted -- a strange case of having one's cake and eating it! And the very last thing in his book is a statement that Rizzuto doesn't belong in the Hall. This is unbiased? I think not.
Excluding the hatchet job on Phil Rizzuto, it's an interesting book. It goes into the history of the Hall, tries to come up with criteria for Hall of Fame membership (distinguishing what he might like them to be from what has guided the selectors), and presents a lot of statistics (which, of course, is what James is famous for). If he'd been more neutral on Rizzuto, the book might have gotten a higher rating.

good for all ages; Basically they are cool little comic books based on the episodes. We'd seen all the episodes, but the kids didn't seem to mind.
What my son loves to read!.......2005-03-07
Certainly there are more educational books out there, but if you want a book your child "loves" to read this may be the right choice. My son, who is almost 7, likes the idea of reading about Spongebob, but was not quite ready for the Spongebob chapter books. He's able to handle the vocabulary, but prefers more pictures than the chapter books offer. These books are set up like a modern comic book with many colorful pictures. My son's favorite book is Friends Forever. We are adding to his collection as new books come out, about every 4-6 months. Happy reading!
