Book Description
In modern economies a substantial proportion of resources is increasingly allocated to transaction costs. An improvement in the definition of transaction costs to include both the information role and efficiency role requires an integration of the approaches of positive economics and normative economics. In The Economics of Transaction Costs P.K. Rao provides a comprehensive analytical treatment of the subject and suggests a few directions for formal economic models.
Customer Reviews:
Totally useless.......2007-04-27
The title of this book is impressive, and I thought it was a book about transaction cost analysis for financial assets, such as stocks, bonds, options, etc. But no, this is some kind of "general, abstract" (and IMHO useless) treatment of some kind of "general, abstract" concept of transaction cost. In fact, there's no financial application in this book at all.
Book Description
This is a comprehensive and up-to-date synthesis of the economic analysis of contracts written by a specially commissioned team of leading international scholars. The book offers a well structured analysis of theoretical developments, the diverse fields of applications, the methodologies in use, and the policy implications at both firm and state level. It offers a unique combination of theoretical and applied economics along with insights from law and management sciences. The volume is designed to appeal to scholars, graduate students and practitioners in economics, management and law.
Download Description
A contract is an agreement under which two parties make reciprocal commitments in terms of their behavior to coordinate. As this concept has become essential to economics in the last 30 years, three main theoretical frameworks have emerged: 'incentive theory', 'incomplete-contract theory' and 'transaction-costs theory'. These frameworks have enabled scholars to renew both the microeconomics of coordination (with implications for industrial organization, labor economics, law and economics, organization design) and the macroeconomics of 'market' (decentralized) economies and of the institutional framework. These developments have resulted in new analyses of a firm's strategy and State intervention (regulation of public utilities, anti-trust, public procurement, institutional design, liberalization policies, etc.). Based on contributions by the leading scholars in the field, this book provides an overview of the past and recent developments in these analytical currents, presents their various aspects, and proposes expanding horizons for theoreticians and practitioners.

Book Description
To a large extent, the air cargo market is a B2B service market between air cargo carriers and forwarding companies. Sellers strive to mitigate risk by engaging in advance sale of capacity via long-term contracts. However, these contracts often leave buyers with an incentive to default if unforeseen price and demand movements occur. This work proposes capacity options as an alternative contract type providing the desired flexibility and shows how capacity can be priced through option contracts. The analysis is conducted by means of an analytical multivariate optimization model under price and demand uncertainty. An application case study conducted on the basis of empirical data from a leading German air cargo carrier illustrates the financial potential. Furthermore, it is shown how capacity-option contracts integrate into the context of air cargo revenue management.

Book Description
What happens if A wants to buy a good or service from B, but not all relevant characteristics can be fixed in a contract? This book gives a non-technical overview of various models dealing with this situation. Particular emphasis is put on the problem that the service includes various tasks and B is paid by a performance measure (signal). As a result, B might choose the wrong allocation of effort between tasks. Of course, the wrong allocation entails costs. A method to calculate these costs is suggested and it is explored how and when these costs occur. Some performance measures seem to be less prone to misallocation such as measures of firm performance. Consequently, one expects more use of firm performance measures when misallocation can be a problem. This hypothesis is examined empirically.

Book Description
McLagan and Nel describe the massive transformation that is occurring in human institutions today. Blending theory and practice in numerous examples and industry models, they look closely at every level of life in a participative organization and deflate the fears and misperceptions that sabotage change.
Customer Reviews:
A Good Read!.......2001-05-09
Companies like to say that they encourage their employees to participate thoroughly in the business, but when it comes to actually handing over power to their subordinates, many executives balk. Patricia McLagan and Christo Nel say that companies and bosses that refuse to take the participatory plunge are doomed to extinction. In The Age of Participation, they present the concept of participation - the active involvement of all employees or citizens in every aspect of running an organization - as a worldview, not just a business method. Sure the book contains more than its share of platitudes, but it is well written and never dry. And it balances its more utopian pronouncements with some practical observations about the performance of companies that have implemented participatory strategies and some insightful points on the role of common sense in business decision making. We [...] recommend this book to executives and mid-level managers, particularly change managers and human resource professionals.
An important book on workplace governance.......1997-10-15
ON THE PLUS SIDE...this comprehensive book does an excellent job of distinguishing between authoritarian and "participative" workplaces. The authors argue persuasively that the former, though dominant, are inadequate for the quality and productivity requirements of our times. In addition, they note the ethical superiority of participation. ON THE MINUS SIDE...I was disappointed with the book's treatment of two key concepts: "stakeholders" and "consent of the governed" (employees). To my mind, McLagan and Nel deal with consent too lightly and with involvement of all stakeholders too heavily. The result is that "participative" struck me as far short of "democratic" (though no doubt even the former will seem drastic to those mired in authoritarianism). Yet I suspect the authors believe that prosperity and morality require a democratic work world. THE BOTTOM LINE? One reader's strong recommendation that the *The Age of Participation* be widely read and discussed.

Excellent for information on breeding & showing cattle........2000-07-02
"Beef Cattle Breeding,Feeding and Showing" is exactly what the title portrays.A well written and very informative book covering most aspects of Beef Cattle production. Easily understood by the novice it also has valuable information for the more experienced. This book covers other topics such as conformation, and touches on genetics. It also has a helpful section on Health. The section on Showing is great,as there is not a lot of information available on show ring protocol and preparing animals for the show ring. I would recommend this book to all Beef Breeders especially beginners.
Book Description
t the heart of the universe is a steady, insistent beat, the sound of cycles in sync. Along the tidal rivers of Malaysia, thousands of fireflies congregate and flash in unison; the moon spins in perfect resonance with its orbit around the earth; our hearts depend on the synchronous firing of ten thousand pacemaker cells. While the forces that synchronize the flashing of fireflies may seem to have nothing to do with our heart cells, there is in fact a deep connection. Synchrony is a science in its infancy, and Strogatz is a pioneer in this new frontier in which mathematicians and physicists attempt to pinpoint just how spontaneous order emerges from chaos. From underground caves in Texas where a French scientist spent six months alone tracking his sleep-wake cycle, to the home of a Dutch physicist who in 1665 discovered two of his pendulum clocks swinging in perfect time, this fascinating book spans disciplines, continents, and centuries. Engagingly written for readers of books such as Chaos and The Elegant Universe, Sync is a tour-de-force of nonfiction writing.
Customer Reviews:
Heavy Science for Light Readers.......2007-09-15
What a fun book. Strogatz has managed to talk about the leading edge of mathematical modeling without a single equation! He uses a comfortable prose and never strays too far from the story of his research. The reader is treated to a view of the way that the world network of scientists organizes itself within areas of research and finds unions where research from one speciality can contribute to another. Who would have thought that the western power grid, the Internet Movie Database and the nervous system of a worm called C. elegans could be effectively modeled with the same operational principles.
sync sync .......2007-03-14
This book gave both nature and theoretical explanation of what sync is and how it might
happen. Of course, its raminifaction still need a lot of exploration. This book is a good start and definite a good read for scientific inquiring mind. Read it and you know if you sync with this book.
Sync: The pulse of creation.......2007-03-06
In his 1987 book Chaos, James Gleick noted that choatic systems produce periodic patches of order.
At that time and during that state of research, the answer to the question of why this should be so remained largely unresolved. And to be honest, after reading this book and learning about the sync or synchronicity of how fireflies light up the night in unison and how inanimate pendulums can come to swing in unison the question will be still be largely unresolved.
However, you will leave this book with some additional interesting food for thought.
Why do periodic patches of order emerge in choatic systems?
Well, one answer suggested seems to be that if that chaotic system produces periodic amounts of a like particle -- like an electron -- that those like particles can generally be relied upon to behave similarly. Then maybe it's the delicate calculus of these mutually constitued similar behaviors that helps give rise to the rise of order.
But maybe not...and such is the state of research into this important issue.
Just Fun Useful Knowledge.......2007-01-17
If you have any interest in science or how things work, then this book promises to be an interesting read.
Strogatz discusses such cool topics like Fireflies, clapping your hands, sleep cycles, and related history.
Once you read this book, you will instantly appreciate how many random things have order, and I guarantee that at some point in conversation you will bring up a point from this book - I do, often.
Not quite synched.......2007-01-12
An interesting book, but rather unfocused and not particularly convincing-- I think he tries too hard to see synch everywhere.

Book Description
This book presents an exhaustive overview of the biogeochemical cycling of mercury in hydroelectric reservoirs as well as in natural aquatic systems of the boreal forest region of northern Québec (Canada). Presented in the form of 14 papers with an overall synthesis, it marks the conclusion of over 10 years of studies carried out by universities, governmental institutions and industries, using the latest and most appropriate sampling and analytical procedures. The results clearly show a threefold increase in atmospheric fluxes of Hg in remote areas of northern Québec over the last century and, in the case of hydroelectric reservoirs, the critical role played by the extensive flooding of land in the temporary post-impoundment increase in mercury levels in aquatic organisms and fish-eating wildlife.

Fans of Yale-Harvard--or, for that matter, of Tennessee State-Grambling--may disagree with sports author John Feinstein's subtitle, but this look inside the Cadet-Midshipmen wars backs up the idea of the annual Army-Navy game as a purer expression of the ideal of college athletics than your basic Poulan Weed-Eater Bowl. Feinstein focuses on the defensive captains from each 1995 squad, young men whose football careers end with the final gun of the big game. In a year when the service academies are enjoying their biggest gridiron success in many seasons, Feinstein's ruminations on the game seem particularly timely.

Customer Reviews:
A worthwhile read!!!.......2007-08-11
Whether you're a football fan or not, John Feinstein's story about the 1995 season and the history and tradition of the Army and Navy rivalry is a good one. After reading it, I could not help but feel a sense of pride and respect for all the fine men and women who serve our country. Having been to an Airforce/Army game, I can vouch for the excitement of watching the Black Knights play at West Point. During the game, I had a chance to chat with an Army football fan. I vividly remember him telling me that "If you think this is exciting, you should see this place during an Army/Navy game! Thanks to this book, I now have a better sense of understanding and newfound appreciation for the importance of this particular game. I will definitely be tuned in for this year's broadcasting of the event. As for this book, it is a definite must-read!
A Great Topic.......2006-09-05
Army-Navy is certainly an under-appreciated game. At least it has been by me. I love college football. Not only that, I have an uncle who went to West Point and another uncle who went to Annapolis and I *still* didn't care about this game!
It is because I just didn't know.
I am not a big John Feinstein fan in general. I like his writing best when he is just covering facts. If he tries to think, he gets in trouble. He is sometimes not a particularly sharp guy: "Tom Cruise in Top Gun was the greatest recruiter Air Force had. Come to Air Force, fly superfast jets, and hang out with Kelly McGillis when you're on the ground"
Then he further alienates those hands that fed him as he did the book with the moronic and trite "John Graves got the most oxymoronic assignment the army can offer: miltary intelligence"
Turn-offs, to be sure, but not material to the subject at hand. I also respect the chances Feinstein takes when he commits to following a team, knowing that at the end of the day (or the season) it's possible that nothing "magical" actually happens.
In this case, the magic is throughout, and the whole endeavor adds up to one big inspiration. I can't wait to see the Army-Navy game this fall.
A great read about two fascinating schools........2006-08-28
This book takes its place alongside John Feinsten's book about basketball in the Patriot League (The Last Amateurs) and two golfing books (A Good Walk Spoiled and The Majors). In all of them, he takes the reader through a season with the athletes, giving fascinating insights into "their world". Feinsten seems to have empathy for athletes that are not in big-time programs, and it shows in his writing.
I found the descriptions of life and academics in the academies to be fascinating. It is amazing how the regular students and the players live and practice, compared to students and athletes at most other colleges. And when they're done, they serve in the military for 4 or 5 more years. When you see what these players go through for the chance to play I-A football, it makes the argument for paying major college players - besides providing them a free education, meals, housing, and tutoring - seem lame.
What's right with sports .......2006-01-03
I picked up this book at a library sale, and I was prepared to dislike it because John Feinstein is such a pretentious boob. I've tried to fight my way through his tedious basketball books about Duke Univ., Bobby Knight, etc., and I figured this was more of the same. I realize that Feinstein has a special ability to get sports figures to share off-field stories about their histories, hopes and dreams. Most sports figures are self-absorbed fools, and they wouldn't be worth spending the day with. Feinstein somehow brings out the best of what they have to offer. Yet, usually the people are so despicable that you don't care anyway.
This book is different. The anecdotes shine because the people are really challenged in multiple arenas -- on the field, in the classroom, and perhaps someday in battle. The fate that they face gives this book a gravitas that's absent from Feinstein's books about guys with hoop dreams or golf visions.
Be warned, however, that the book is repetitive, as if Feinstein thinks that his readers are too stupid to remember something he wrote earlier in the book.
A fun journey.......2004-07-15
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was a magnificant journey through the 1995 season with 2 of the most prestigious football programs in the country. We get a first hand view of what it is like to go to a military school first of all, but to also play football while at that military school. We also get a glimpse of what it was like when the 2 programs were in their hayday and people actually wanted to play at these schools. There was once a time where they dominated and all of the great players went to the military academies. Today, with high salaries and mandatory service, it is unlikely for an all american to attend one of these schools. The cadets know that the end of their football career comes with the end of their college schooling, and that makes the losses hurt that much more. Follow the players through their push through the season against some of the nation's powerhouses. You won't be sorry.

Book is mostly out-of-date.......2007-02-11
If you have a mobile home built more than 25 years ago - this book can be helpful. The first edition of this book was done more than 30 years ago.
I found it mostly useless for a contemporary mobile home
Excellent value and easy to use........2004-05-24
This book is right on the mark. It covers all the usual repair and remodel projects with clear instructions and excellent, color illustrations. Pays for itself in the first project.
Very descriptive.......2004-05-17
EXCELLENT advice, lots of detailed pictures, and in-depth explanations. If you have a Mobile Home, old, or new. Or know someone who does, this is an excellent referance guide!
Foremost Mobile Home Fix It Guide : Your Manufactured Home R.......2001-09-29
As a retirement project this summer we purchase a mobile home as a camp on the St. Lawrence River. It is a 1987 model and in need of some repair. I have a lifetime of experience remodeling and repairing the houses we have live in. All of them conventional stick built houses. Some of my knowledge and experience does transfer to a mobile home but they are a different. This is a valuable how to book for anyone who owns or plans on owning a mobile home as their full-time home or as seasonal home. As in any building one cannot just cut into a wall or a floor without knowing what is inside or if something may be damaged. This book provides cut away diagrams of the ceilings, walls and floors and instructions on making repairs to each. It also provides instruction for for repair or replacement of all segments of the entire plant: plumbing, wiring, windows, doors, etc. This is definitely a must guide for the experienced handyman or the novice.
A Must for New Owners of Mobiles.......2000-09-13
I bought a mobile home last year, and even though I'm fairly handy with home repair and maintenance, I found that mobile homes have unique features not usually addressed in general do-it-yourself books. Floors, roofs, siding, anchoring, ceiling panels, and windows are just a few of the areas where specialized information is really helpful, and this book covers them all. Plus, everything you need to do is explained in step-by-step fashion with plenty of pictures and helpful hints and tips. Projects are grouped into topic sections covering exterior, interior, systems (plumbing, electrical, heating), and seasonal, safety & security. The book also includes information on closing up your home for the season, pest control, insurance on your home, energy conservation, hiring good help, other resources for mobile home owners, a glossary of terms, a brief history and overview of mobiles, and much more. A great reference to have on hand.

Baby's Box of Fun.......2007-05-13
I purchased this book set for my grandson when he was 12 months old. Listening to books is the only time he actually sits still. His favorite book was Toes, Ears, & Nose although he likes all the books because they are interactive. The only problem with the books is if he is left unsupervised or even when holding him, he rips off the flaps in the books. We have had to glue them back on numerous times. I would highly recommend these books but you must be careful with babies that are aggressively interactive with the books.
