This text is a compilation of 67 engaging, flexible, and tested exercises for active learning of organizational behavior. Exercises range from the simple to the complex and can be implemented as individual or group activities. Self-inventories, role-plays, and case studies provide a diversity of experiences. Clover's purchase of Org Behavior by Hai.......2005-09-15
I specifically thought I was buying a later edition (i.e., the latest) but got the orginal paperback dated 1986. Am very frustrated that this is one of the great difficulties in buying from Amazon or it's partners (knowing what edition you are going to get). I have recognized this difficulty prior but through the years thought I have learned how to either NOT buy or know what edition I was getting. This time I was completely fooled. This experience has reminded me to once again be completely wary of editions when buying from Amazon or don't buy. Bill Clover
Organizational Behavior: Experiences and Cases.......2000-03-13
I first experienced this book in a touchie feelie Org Behavior class in grad school. The class was fun and a welcome change from the grim lecture style that was (is?) so common in college. The curious thing is that years later it is probably the most memorable class and this book was the center of it. The experiental excersizes brought dry often vague management theory to life. I still refer to the book to think through management problems and review background for insights on why people, groups and organizations act the way they do. If only more books and courses could be this good, people might learn, understand and use the ideas. This is a great book.
Book Description
Effective Behavior in Organizations is a combination of text and cases with experiential exercises in the Instructor's Manual. This book seeks to provide a bridge between theory and practice by emphasizing learning at both cognitive and experiential levels. It is also unique because it covers group behavior before individual behavior. This sequencing was chosen to parallel the experience of the student within the classroom. The authors have found that early in the course students worry about finding their place within a group. Once secure in their group, students are ready to look at themselves and to explore together aspects of their personal systems.
Customer Reviews:
A systemic approach to teaching Organizational Behavior.......1999-12-09
The authors' approach to organizational behavior is exciting and challenging for me and my students. Although they cover the three levels of OB (individual, group, organization), they approach it from a systems perspective that I find integrative and interesting. Early in the book, the team of authors presents a framework for evaluating organizational behavior dilemmas in a systemic way.
The authors provide numerous cases in the back of the book and very good teaching notes in the instructor's manual to practice systemic thinking and to learn OB concepts. Unlike most texts, which begin at the individual level, the authors begin at the group level recognizing that most organizational behavior interactions take place in an organizational system. They then move to the individual level, two-person relationships, and conclude with leadership.
New teachers who are interested in using cases will find the instructor's manual supportive and nearly fail-safe. The well integrated design of the book and instructor's manual makes it easy to design your course. The IM appears to have actually been written by the book authors! There are logical places for lecture, classroom exercises, and case analysis. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
A history of animals throughout the ages. The author explains how animals have played a vital role in humankind's evolutionary course, aiming to enhance the reader's perception of history, the human species, and the sentient creatures with whom we share the planet.
Customer Reviews:
Strong, comprehensive book.......2004-10-28
Summary: A history book that tries to measure the facts related to animal domestication, and also speculates on where people would be without their animal companions. The book's main premise is that the domestication of animals was a necessary stepping-stone to civilization, giving early man the ability to transport themselves and possessions for long distances, and also providing enough meat to take man beyond a hand-to-mouth existence. The book covers animals including horses, cows, pigs, reindeer, sheep, goats, chickens, bees, silkworms, dogs, elephants, cats, turkeys, geese, swans, ducks, rabbits, pigeons, rats, mice, camels, and, as they say, much, much more.
The Good and the Bad:
This book has a premise that I find interesting: a look at the history of mankind through a specific focus. The weaknesses of the book are that the argument that people couldn't have gotten anywhere without animals is kind of at once obvious and unproven. Surely, having animals made things significantly easier, but it's difficult to say that civilization wouldn't have gotten going eventually anyhow. The book is also kind of redundant, because so many of the animals have such a similar history and impact that in some ways, reading about sheep makes reading about goats much less interesting. Also, in many of the cases, there is simply very little known about the domestication process, leaving many gaps to be filled with speculation. On the positive side, there were so many interesting facts that some sections of the book were nothing less than fascinating. Caras does a good job of bringing home again and again how a relationship that we've taken for granted happened only with great effort, and a significant sacrifice on the part of early man and the animals in question.
What I learned:
Reindeer are weird animals, hunting lemmings and eating human urine. Cows are descended from Aurochs, which were three times the size of the cattle we breed today. There are probably no wild horses left in the world, with the possible exception of the outer limits of Siberia. The black rat was responsible for the black plague, but was supplanted by the brown rat that we know today. The definition of domestication that he works with involves the breeding of wild stock to produce favorable traits that make the separate gene pools measurably different.
Highly recommended for all animal rights activists.......2002-12-09
A Perfect Harmony: The Intertwining Lives Of Animals And Humans throughout History by animal expert and author Roger A. Caras is a fascinating, informative, and enlightening look at how domesticating animals forever changed human history and created the fundamental basis (along with agriculture) for the rise of human civilization. From pastoral livestock, to burden bearers, to controlled, fostered, and protected resources for hunters, animals have served human needs for thousands of years, and so helped shape the world as we know it today. Illustrated with black-and-white artwork, A Perfect Harmony offers a wealth of detail in a thoroughly "reader friendly" text which is very highly recommended for all animal rights activists and wildlife/animal companion enthusiasts interested in learning more about man's interdependence upon our domesticated livestock.

Customer Reviews:
It's an additional resource; not "the Bible".......2003-04-20
The book is a decent additional resource to Urioste's "Red Book" (see also her 2003 26 trad routes addendum). Combined w/ the Red Rocks' SuperTopos the three will almost give you one good guidebook's worth of beta.
It IS your Red Rocks' "Bible" if you are a sport climber.
Need Improvement.......2002-02-07
I've been living and climbing at Red Rocks for two years now. Swain's guide book publicizes a number of new routes that are not in the previous guide; however, not all descriptions are adequate, and a few are even dangerous (such as fixed anchors indicated in the book where there are none in reality). You may also tire of the author's rather feeble attempts at humour! Having said this, I do use the guide alot, and when coupled with the older Urioste guide it serves its purpose. I am saddened however, by Swain's decision to not include a relatively large number of very good routes that were in the old guide-- thereby effectively 'erasing' good routes from the public memory. This amounts to a kind of bizarre censorship, as many of the routes he has left out are quite good and worth preserving. I, and many others, hope for a more enlightened guide book in the future; meanwhile, however, Swain's guide will suffice for most occasional visitors.
Total Pile.......2001-11-19
I do not believe this book can even be considered a guide book. No topos for certain areas. Poor descriptions. I went to Red Rocks with this book and it only got me to where I needed to park. I used the kindness of locals to get me to where I needed to go. Don't waste your time on this book. It's a pile.
Better than most.......2000-03-25
I consider Swain's guide book to be a work in progress. I hear that the 3rd edition is out and that it is improved. You have to remember that Swain is tall and likes to sandbag, so if he downgrades your best onsight, don't let it get to you. Sure, he messes up some pitch lengths, pitch grades and approaches but I believe he's trying to do his honest best to write a quality guide. He's no Greg Opland, but maybe he can learn.
The best book BECAUSE it's the only book to choose from.......2000-02-29
The book is very good overall. However the author should have spent a lot more time editing it before printing. The book has numerous contradictions as far as the rating system goes. One climb might be listed as a trad climb only and then in the index that same climb is listed as a sport climb. The index's section on the 5.10a climbs is completely screwed up! About 85% of these climbs are listed as a sport climb but then when you flip to that page they are listed as strictly trad climbs. It's very frustrating sometimes. The book has a lot of very helpful information and as of 1999 it was by far the best available. Hopefully the author will fix all of these problems in the next printing that has been rumored to be release for about 2 years and going.
Customer Reviews:
good for a layman like me.......2006-08-31
Not being a professional, this book helped me understand some basic principles and to know when to call a repairman and to get good service in the event I do need help.
Good Basic Info.......2006-03-11
This paper back is a good basic handbook for the apprentice providing fundamental descriptions of AC and refrigeration parts/components and process definitions.
Air Conditioning Refrigeration Tool Box Manual.......2005-09-10
This is a very usefull publication. It explains in some detail the principals of operation of component parts and of complete systems. The diagrams are well done and very usefull.
for commercial applications.......2003-12-20
I have done household and small commercial applications for 20+ years. I have recently been hired by a commercial refrigeration company. While I have not read the entire book it appears to be quite a comprehensive volume for commercial applications. Useful to make the transition I require. It is very helpful in answering my questions and providing additional information on the systems/components/effects/problems/reasons I am being introduced to on the job. Some of the details on each subject seem to be helpful to the professionals I work with. As one of the reviewers (who gave a one star rating) stated: all professionals should already have this knowledge. However, if I were a business owner I would want all my techs to have a copy of this book to speed the diagnosis and proper solution for the system's failure as opposed to simply replacing the failed part. (It seems to me the above mentioned reviewer should write his own book...I'd buy it).
Good work.......2003-08-09
Excellent training tool. Taught me how to understand all components. Almost worn mine out and must buy another copy. A larger size in hard back an inch or two would be appreciated. Price is excellent.
Book Description
Using a digital camera, an electronic tripod, and digital imaging technology, photographer Nick Wood has developed a new way to photograph landscapes and cityscapes, placing the viewer in the center of dramatic 360º panoramas. In 360º Paris, the follow-up to 360º New York and 360º London, Wood uses this revolutionary process to shed new light on one of the world's most beautiful cities.
Including images of well-known landmarks seen with fresh eyes (Notre-Dame, the Louvre, the Champs-Elysées), as well as the singular and distinctive locales visitors love to discover (the home of Godiva chocolates, a market for exotic birds, the "Paris Plage" along the banks of the Seine), 360º Paris is the perfect souvenir of the City of Light. The accompanying CD-ROM includes all of the photographs as QuickTime movies. AUTHOR BIO: Nick Wood is a London-based photographer whose work spans a broad range of subjects, from portraiture to architecture. His particular fascination with 360º photography led to this series of books.

Well done.......2004-11-18
For 85% this book is breathtaking and fascinating. No doubt, it's a new look on usual things in Paris. Paris is my most favorite city in the world and I collect photo albums about it for a long time, thus I can assure you that it will be a good deal to buy it. Its weaknesses: there are usual things (though from unusual point of view, 15% of the book is devoted to some interiors of shops and bars(do you want to pay for product placement?, the disk is attached to this book, which includes some digital panoramas, included in the book (however, my Quick Time Player did not manage to find some files (most interesting I should admit) though it seems they are there).

In case you've forgotten, the most visited city in Europe is stunning. Paris 360° will help refresh your memory with oversized photos of the gold-dripping L'Opera, the serpentine streets of Montmartre, L'Arc de Triomphe with the city peeking through, the swanky Hotel de Ville with its riot of marble sculptures throwing a party atop, and of course the Eiffel Tower, full moon sulking behind it. In case your memory hasn't been fully jarred, this glossy volume has several panels that open out, giving big 360-degree views, including a night scene of boats gliding down the River Seine. And if you want to play a rousing guessing game of "What's this Parisian site," the hunt won't be ruined by captions--you have to look up explanations of photos in the back. While this book makes a grand addition to any coffee table, for the steep price you may wish it provided some sort of insight, or at least scatch-'n'-sniff strips. --Melissa Rossi
Book Description
Paris 360 is the fourth in a series of large-scale photographic records of the great cities of the world, following New York, Venice, and Rome. Each of these cities has unique appeal, Paris personifying sophisticated glamour in an unspoiled and manageable city space. The wide boulevards, well-tended gardens, and landmark buildings are not crowded by skyscrapers, and a continuing commitment to public works and interesting architectural projects creates an ever-changing civic personality.
The large format and pull-out panoramas of
Paris 360 allowed the photographer Attilio Boccazzi-Varotto a series of broad canvases on which to capture the essence of this wonderful city. Using his rotating camera, Boccazzi-Varotto took panoramic pictures of Paris's neighborhoods, great buildings, squares, and streets. A list of the photographs' subjects reads like a must-see tour of Paris: the Louvre, the palace Vendome, Le Marais, the Opera, the Hotel de Ville, Les Halles, the Pompidou Center, the place des Vosges, and more. Some of the photographs have been taken from an unusual perspective to provide a fresh view of a familiar scene, like a street in Montmartre or the Eiffel Tower. The time of the pictures is varied: The sparkling freshness of I.M. Pei's pyramids at the Louvre and the basilica of Sacre Coeur are shown by night, the Seine by the Ile de la Cite at twilight. Each photograph is accompanied by an explanatory caption that identifies the landmarks pictured and gives some of their historical and artistic context.
Paris remains one of the most popular European destinations for American visitors, and this volume, an extravagant treasure, is a perfect memento to remember it by.
Customer Reviews:
Good but strange.......2001-11-02
Well, very unusual and interesting book. Unusual, because photos of Paris are given under different angles. Interesting, because...simply interesting to look at famous places sometimes at 360 degrees view.
However, this book has one disadvantage or may be I did not understand the idea of authors. At the end the book there are all photos in small size and black-white color (back pictures). But sometimes the pickup angles of back pictures do not agree with the same pictures in the book. For example, back picture is of 180 degree view, and real photo is 90 degree. Therefore, you feel that there is a flaw of the book. As for the rest, I liked it.
This book paints a beautiful portrait of the city........2000-06-05
Even if you've never been to Paris, you'll still appreciate the photography in this book. If you have been there you'll also find that the book paints a beautiful portrait of the city. I bought a copy for my wife's birthday and she keeps it in the livingroom near our photo albums. We'll look at our own photos when we want to see how Paris was during the brief time that we were there, and we'll look at this book when we want to think of Paris at its dreamlike romantic best.
Book Description
Here is a continuation of selections from Flanner's celebrated "Letter from Paris," a series that appeared in the New Yorker from 1925 to 1975 over the signature " Genêt." With clarity and authority, Flanner writes about the arts, the politics, and the economy of postwar Paris. This is the era in which Roosevelt and Matisse die, Françoise Sagan bursts on the literary scene, and Josephine Baker stages a comeback. Index.

C'est superbe.......2003-03-31
Flanner (nom de plume: Genêt), a former New Yorker essayist and who lived in Paris for many years, describes the cultural and social life of Paris in the 40s and 50s. She pens wonderful glimpses into what Parisians were thinking, feeling, and doing -Paris' life, wine, art, and ways of thinking. C'est magnifique.
