        Book Description

Organizational Behavior places core concepts of human behavior and industrial psychology in a real-world context. The text's applied approach and succinct coverage of topical issues helps prepare students to meet practical, day-to-day challenges. Strong end-of-chapter exercises, activities, plus an optional case and exercise book make this flexible text suitable for students at the undergraduate level. Likewise, the authors' emphasis on the latest organizational behavior research continues to attract graduate students.

In keeping with the emphasis on current content, the Seventh Edition includes an ongoing case featuring Enron that encourages students to consider how all OB topics tie together and practice applying key concepts by systematically working through the case and answering the accompanying questions. All boxes have been replaced or significantly updated to reflect recent changes in business—including Talking Technology, Mastering Change, The Business of Ethics, Working with Diversity, and World View features. Call-out quotes from managers appear at appropriate points throughout the text to highlight relevant, real-world examples. In addition, each chapter includes one cartoon with a content-based caption that highlights an interesting, and often humorous, aspect of organizational behavior.

4 out of 5 stars Most helpful and insightful.......2002-09-28

The book is fairly comprehensive in terms of its scope. We are currently using the book at our Organizational Behavior class, and it's proved to be an excellent reference. The way it is structured (for the reader) makes in-depth reading or skimming through it (let's face it: this is the reality for most working MBA students!) equally effective. It has clearly distinguishable definitions on the margins, which can serve as a cue for the topic, along with the summaries at the end of every chapter. The intro and closing "cases" provided around the topic of the chapter are VERY insightful and on every other page or so, there are examples about the matter being discussed, which help with the understanding (I know that I, as an Engineer, appreciate examples to illustrate a point). Finally, the illustrations (graphs and charts) are one of the best things the book has! Remember that phrase that used to say "a picture is worth a thousand words"? Well, the authors epithomize it. The charts in the book do a great job at conveying entire pages of information at a time in a very efficient way. All in all, I like the book a lot, and it's been very helpful in complementing our in-class discussions about cases and topics of Organizational Behavior.

1 out of 5 stars But this book ONLY if it is required!.......2000-12-10

I had to buy this book for a college management class. The material is painfully obvious. However, if you've lived you're entire life living in a dark, dank room eating Cheetos and watching MTV, then this book will be a watershed for you. If, on the otherhand, you are looking for some solid management theory, this book is not for you. If you have to buy this book for a course like I did, remember, you can always sell it to someone who hasn't read it yet.

This is a fantastic resource of small case studies (appropriate for introductory undergraduate courses) and in-class exercises. If you enjoy having a more "participative" class-room, but your students are not ready for HBS case studies yet, this is a great way to introduce them to case analyses, and get them applying the theories and concepts that you have talked about in class.

            Book Description

Designed to provide a nonmathematical introduction to biostatistics for medical and health science students, graduate students in the biological sciences, physicians, and researchers, this text explains statistical principles in non-technical language and focuses on explaining the proper scientific interpretation of statistical tests rather than on the mathematical logic of the tests themselves. Intuitive Biostatistics covers all the topics typically found in an introductory statistics text, but with the emphasis on confidence intervals rather than P values, making it easier for students to understand both. Additionally, it introduces a broad range of topics left out of most other introductory texts but used frequently in biomedical publications, including survival curves. multiple comparisons, sensitivity and specificity of lab tests, Bayesian thinking, lod scores, and logistic, proportional hazards and nonlinear regression. By emphasizing interpretation rather than calculation, this text provides a clear and virtually painless introduction to statistical principles for those students who will need to use statistics constantly in their work. In addition, its practical approach enables readers to understand the statistical results published in biological and medical journals.

5 out of 5 stars An original approach. An excellent book on the subject........2007-06-13

The majority of reviewers really liked this book. I can see why, I did too. The author uses a unique approach to teaching statistics that is focused on calculating and explaining Confidence Intervals (the minimum and maximum value you expect an outcome to be given a confidence level typically 95%) rather than P values (probability outcome is due to chance). He also uses common sense and clearly distinguishes between what is statistically significant and what is "significant." Thus, he translates well statistical mumbo jumbo into plain English. He tells you what you should care about and look for.

He shares with you all the statistical flaws that clinical studies may have including testing multiple hypothesis to come up with just a single statistically meaningful one, using large samples to prove something trivial, using small samples that raises uncertainty level, etc...

His section on Bayesian Logic is excellent. His table on what test or methodology to use given the shape of the data and objective you have is worth the price of the book alone. That's one of the clearest taxonomy of statistical methods I have seen anywhere.

Some knowledgeable reviewers have picked up a few errors the author made. I stumbled upon a couple while attempting to replicate the calculation of a few examples. I emailed the author and each time within an hour he either clarified the calculation or corrected the typo that was present in the book. Given his prompt answers, I can't ding him for the couple of typos I caught.

Although the author presents this book as an introductory one, I recommend the reader acquires a good foundation in basic statistics before studying this book. Forgotten Statistics would fit that bill. Indeed, `Intuitive Biostatistics' covers a huge amount of ground. It is far more than an introductory text. It covers material that is pretty advanced including nonparametric hypothesis tests, non linear regression, logistic regression, Bayesian analysis, etc... If it is the first time you come across that stuff you'd be well served having a solid stats foundation. Given that, this book has a lot to offer. I'll keep it as a great reference for years.

5 out of 5 stars Hey, I got an A in Biostats I.......2007-01-04

I am not a high faltuin' math person, the calculus I went through in undergrad was a struggle and I remember very little. I am a chemist by training, currently seeking my PhD in Public Health while working full time. What that came down to was little to no time to doof around with a muddled textbook or an equally muddled professor or a non-English speaking Teacher's Assistant.

I have no intention of becoming a biostatistician or an epidemiologist, I am interested in policy.

So coming from that perspective, as a student, this book was an absolute God-send.

Not only did I get an A in the class, but I feel like I have a sturdy foundation for my future coursework and career. I will not be intimidated by numbers or jargon because Dr. Motulsky made it all as straightforward and clear as possible, and I recall even laughing a few times.

Overall, if you are in school, facing a biostatics class with extreme trepidation, buy this book as a supplement. Look up the topics in the index as you go and you will have more than the $40 worth of "eureka" moments.

5 out of 5 stars YES! I could speak and ask questions at journal club without looking like a fool........2006-09-25

Helped me from looking a fool during residency. Thank you Harvey!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Statistics Book.......2006-03-13

Intuitive Biostatistics takes a confidence interval approach that should be required reading for all persons interested in statistics. His discussion of basic statistical concepts in the context of interpreting lab test results is clear and informative and introduces the reader to Bayesian concepts that are presented very simply.

              Book Description

Through careful, deliberate thought this book provides the nonmathematician with a foundation for understanding the underlying statistical reasoning process in clinical research. This volume recognizes the inevitable tension between the mathematics of hypothesis testing and the ethical requirements in medical research and concentrates on the resolution of these issues in P value interpretation. By presenting the material in a conversational format and consciously de-emphasizing computational devices and focusing instead on the features of experimental design that either clarify or blur P value interpretation statistical reasoning becomes extremely accessible to the uninitiated.

                Book Description

Lowers the Learning Curve for Physicians and Researchers!

The successful Statistical Reasoning in Medicine: The Intuitive P-value Primer, with its novel emphasis on patient and community protection, illustrated the correct use of statistics in health care research for healthcare workers. Through clear explanations and examples, this book provided the non-mathematician with a foundation for understanding the underlying statistical reasoning process in clinical research, the core principles of research design, and the correct use of statistical inference and p-values.

The P-Value Primer 2nd Edition levels the learning curve of statistics for health care researchers by further de-emphasizing mathematical and computational devices, bringing the principles of statistical reasoning closer to the uninitiated. Adding to the updated discussions of research design, hypothesis testing, regression analysis, and Bayes procedures, are new discussions of absolute and relative risk, as well as a lucid description of the number needed to treat (NNT). The multiple analysis issue is clearly defined, and a new description of the correct use and interpretation of combined endpoints in health care research is offered in an easily digestible format.

The P-value Primer 2nd Edition demolishes other obstacles that have impeded a clear understanding of the application of statistics in medicine. The intertwined roles of epidemiology and biostatistics are depicted. In addition to a description of the non-technical history of statistics, a new discussion describes the active cultural forces that have historically argued against the use of probability and statistics, placing the current applications and controversies involving p-values in context. New illustrations of the difficulties physicians and health care providers face in research are offered, and the differences between research skills and statistical skills are distinguished. New discussion describing the process of scientific reasoning, p-values, and the law is included. All of this nonstandard content, so essential for a well rounded perspective on the modern use of statistics in medicine, makes this volume unique among introductory statistics books.

New figures, conversation, and illustrations fortify each chapter. In addition, three new appendices have been added on the normal distribution, sample size computations, and new requirements for the use of statistics in the courtroom.

As Steve Allen proclaims in his introduction, "Canyoneering 2 is not for everyone." Utah's local canyoneering guru has carefully laid out seven multiday backpack trips that are very demanding and only recommended for advanced hikers with technical rock-climbing skills. Muddy Creek, the Dirty Devil, Dark Canyon, White Canyon, and the Escalante east are all remote and seldom-seen routes. In fact, Dark Canyon is considered one of the most remote areas in the country, which sees only six to eight visitors every year. Still interested? Allen's guide gives you a good head start with preparation chapters, plenty of helpful tips, and excellent landmark descriptions for the confusing, often baffling desert terrain. --Ben Tiffany

This book has a lot of good information in it.

The two problems with the book are that with the exception of the hike, Escalante South, the rest of the loops cross well-used roads. What is the point of carrying a pack for a week while crossing well-used roads, especially if the author fails to explain that nearly all points on the loop can easily be reached by dayhikes?

A second dislike is that the author also takes you some less interesting sections of some canyons in expense of some of the really great sections of the same canyon or nearby ones.

If you want to use this book to it's fullest potential, make sure to get off the paint-by-numbers route and explore some on your own. Make sure to go over the maps and realize that the areas in the book don't usually get that far from the roads.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the wilderness of Southern Utah.......1999-03-03

This is an excellent book for the more hardcore backpackers out there. The loops described are a lot of fun, and provide access to spectacular views plus a chance to explore true wilderness. As for bringing too many people... after going on several of the hikes, I must admit we were hard pressed to find footprints less than a year or two old along the tracks, if any at all. Enjoy!

The last review on this book felt that Allens book would cause the public to swarm the remote Utah regions and spoil this PUBLIC land for him. While he contends that the land is fragile and that anyone else besides him will destroy it, Allen emphasis time and again in his books the Low-impact camping tecniques essential to this land. This book describes in detail many fablous and beautiful hikes. Some of the most beautiful and marvelous scenery in the world is located in the bad, no-man lands of Utah. These series of books instruct help and guide readers through these wonders. We should be thankful there is a guide so that we aren't ruining the land by rescuing inexperianced hikers that didn't know what they were getting into. These guides are a must for anyone interested in exploration and enjoying the wonder of nature first hand. They correctly and accuratly depict water sources, milage and countless other invaulable things. Thankyou Steve Allen for all of the hard work and the sacrifice that you made to bring us these books. And to the previous reader, I am so very sorry that you feel the lands are to be used by you and only you. Get over yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Destruction of Pristine Areas.......1997-12-03

The guide is a good one. I have hiked the Long and Gravel Canyon area for over 20 years with friends and family. It can be amazingly fun but also amazingly dangerous country. My main feeling about guide books like the one Steve has written is negative, however. I am used to hiking in areas with only a topo map and a compass, as this provides much more of a wilderness experience. Hikes with a guide book destroy this aspect. Also, the land is very delicate in these riparian areas, and cannot tolerate large influxes of hikers without destruction of the resource. As guide books like this proliferate, the influx of hikers will more certainly destroy the wilderness experience as well as the physical viability of the resource much more surely than mining or cattle ranching could ever do. This in view of the fact that hikers seek out the best part of a limited resource and tend to overuse it. Mr. Allen makes a point of his love for the canyon country and yet ironically may be responsible for more degredation of the resource than almost anyone else because of the publication of books like this. I am not anti-hiker. In fact I am a member of the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance. But please, Mr. Allen, let us hikers "roam free", and leave us some unspoiled territory!!

Buying a home requires skill in a variety of areas. There's negotiating, financing, inspecting a home, and understanding legal contracts. It's really too much for most people to do by themselves, which, as you know by now, is why most of us pay good money to hire real estate agents, mortgage brokers, home inspectors, and other professionals to help with the process. But that doesn't remove the buyer from the role of project manager, whose job is to understand what each specialist is meant to do and recognize when one of those key players is not doing his or her job right. Books such as 100 Questions Every First-Time Home Buyer Should Ask help the novice gain a solid understanding of the basics involved in this often complex process. The questions in this second edition of author Ilyce R. Glink's book also make buyers think about their decisions. If you want to buy an older home, for example, do you understand that older windows may need caulking or new sashes, that bathroom tiles may need regrouting, and that an older home may need rewiring, a new hot water heater, or a new furnace right away? Other questions range from the routine (How much can I afford? How do I make an offer?) to some that are hard to anticipate (What if the seller wants to stay in the house after the closing? Who should attend the closing?). Chapters are devoted to key topics, including figuring out what kind of house you want (this effort starts with a "wish list" and improves with a "reality check"), knowing what you can afford, putting together and negotiating a deal, financing your home, closing on the deal, and then doing what it takes to live happily ever after. Of course, living happily ever after requires understanding when it's time to move on to your next home, a process that may find you dusting off this book in the coming years. --John Russell

                          Book Description

Mr. Maxwell is one contented cat. He has just been promoted. And what better way to celebrate than by going to his favorite restaurant, the Paw and Claw? He decides to live a little and order the house specialty -- a live mouse. When the headwaiter asks if they should kill the mouse, Mr. Maxwell says that isn't necessary. He knows the Paw and Claw's mice are bred for politeness! But this particular live mouse can't keep quiet -- would Mr. Maxwell like to add a little salt? Or order a glass of wine? Would he mind saying a little prayer before eating? My, what a bold and wordy mouse! Mr. Maxwell hopes the mouse doesn't give him indigestion ... Richly illustrated and full of surprises, Mr. Maxwell's Mouse is a David-and-Goliath story with claws, whiskers and tails.

What a great book! How Frank and Devin Asch ever thought it up is beyond me. Although it is a cat and a mouse, the "cat" is a middle aged accountant, fussy and prim, celebrating a promotion at work with a special lunch. As his lunch stalls for time, he gets so nervous he guzzles his wine. Not what I'd consider prime kid fare. But it works.

Kids love to see an adult at the mercy of a child--which is how they see it when the mouse torments the cat into letting him go. Yet this is not a mean-spirited book. Both the cat and the mouse are treated with dignity and sympathy even though the story is funny.

The beautiful, almost black-and-white illustrations add to the gravity of this updated trickster tale.

Frank and Devin Asch give new meaning to the term "Cat and mouse" in the delightful _Mr. Maxwell's Mouse_. The punctilious Mr. Maxwell visits his regular restaurant the Paw and Claw to celebrate a promotion. As a special treat, he asks for a fresh mouse for his lunch.

The exchange between diner and dinner is mildly humorous, as each seeking to gain something from the other (the cat his meal, the mouse his escape) under the veneer of polite restaurant conversation. The story itself is interesting and charming in its revisiting of an old theme, the artwork reminiscent of the 1920's. A fun book for younger children or those just entering school.

A funny cat-and-mouse tale, as business cat Mr. Maxwell strays from his normal baked mouse at his favorite restaurant in favor of raw mouse. The entrée requests a prayer before the meal and soon engages Mr. Maxwell in a distracting conversation. Mouse causes a commotion that lands Cat in the hospital, as this book almost reads like a Monty Python skit with its absurd characters, their polite habits and absolute silliness. Instead of ordering his usual baked mouse, he orders raw mouse for his entrèe. The Paw and Claw prides itself on polite and plump mice, but the one served to Mr. Maxwell just can't keep quiet. Would Mr. Maxwell like to add a little salt? Would he like to say a prayer before eating? Would he like a fine glass of wine?

Devin Asch, son of the author, illustrates this macabre, dark comedy with artwork created in Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter. The glossy illustrations alternate between detailed scenes of the restaurant and close-ups of Mr. Maxwell and the mouse. The facial expressions and body language add to the tongue-and-cheek quality of the text. White text against black panels fit the sophisticated tone of the story.

Children found the illustrations to be "elegant" and "distinguished" and appreciated the details, such as the cats' clothing. While sixth graders said that the story might be scary for young children, they found it to be entertaining and funny. A ten-year-old girl laughed at the idea of an animal talking to its food and "beamed from ear to ear" as the book was read. A nine-year-old burst boy out laughing when the mouse maneuvered Mr. Maxwell's tail on to his plate. He also compared the story to "Tom and Jerry" cartoons.

In early 20th century England, tradition, formality, and imperialism are still prized possessions of the British Empire. And so it is with Mr. Maxwell. Every day, at precisely 12:45 pm, he walks amongst the other cats to the dignified "Paw and Claw" dining establishment for his midday lunch of baked mouse. He is a somewhat stuffy cat, full of secret ambition, and both pride and power burst through his 3-piece herringbone suit. Today, he is particularly proud because of his promotion to Vice Manager of Efficiency Control, and it is partly for this reason that he decides to order a fresh mouse and to kill it himself.

The live mouse, served on a single slice of rye bread with a garnish of parsley, arrives relaxed and talkative. When the mouse sneezes due to the salt and pepper showering him, Mr. Maxwell says "Gesundheit," and the mouse thanks him. "Mr. Maxwell appreciated the compliment, but said nothing more. His mother had always advised him not to fraternize with the food."

Mr. Maxwell is up against a formidable mouse, however, who elicits his pity and admiration, even as the cat's fork holds him down and his knife is perilously close to cutting. The mouse assures him that he doesn't want to escape, but his 5-hankie prayer, his advice on which wine would go best with mouse, and his empathy for Maxwell's difficulty in going for the kill earn the cat's trust. This is the cat's eventual undoing, as the mouse tricks him, frees the other mice, and sends Maxwell to the hospital with a bloody tail.

Asch sets a Gothic tone early, with the cold green décor and the grayish-green pallor of the cats and the dark greys of the formal club. The computer-generated graphics also lend a cold, odd cast to the illustrations. On one gruesome page, Asch depicts the mouse almost facing us, with a fork and knife millimeters away from their fatal work. While the ending is wild and liberating, we see some blood (his own) flowing down Maxwell's tail as he lets out a painful scream. This quirky book, full of gloomy, threatening imagery, expressionist close-ups and long shots, the specter of mousicide, and class (or, at least, inter-species) warfare (complete with sharp knife and let blood) is for older elementary school children and up. While creative, I found the book more interesting than entertaining.
