Book Description

The Paradox of Plenty explains why, in the midst of two massive oil booms in the 1970s, oil-exporting governments as different as Venezuela, Iran, Nigeria, Algeria, and Indonesia chose common development paths and suffered similarly disappointing outcomes. Meticulously documented and theoretically innovative, this book illuminates the manifold factors--economic, political, and social--that determine the nature of the oil state, from the coherence of public bureaucracies, to the degree of centralization, to patterns of policy-making.
Karl contends that oil countries, while seemingly disparate, are characterized by similar social classes and patterns of collective action. In these countries, dependence on petroleum leads to disproportionate fiscal reliance on petrodollars and public spending, at the expense of statecraft. Oil booms, which create the illusion of prosperity and development, actually destabilize regimes by reinforcing oil-based interests and further weakening state capacity.
Karl's incisive investigation unites structural and choice-based approaches by illuminating how decisions of policymakers are embedded in institutions interacting with domestic and international markets. This approach--which Karl dubs "structured contingency"--uses a state's leading sector as the starting point for identifying a range of decision-making choices, and ends by examining the dynamics of the state itself.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting contribution to theory.......2003-03-11

This book is a good contribution to the scholarship of one-good exporters, such as oil for many Middle Eastern countries and Venezuela. The author focuses on Venezuela, with occasional reference to other countries.

The main thesis is that aside from the traditional Dutch disease of such intense exporters, there is an organizational component in the downfall of such plenty. For example, she argues that a large self-serving infrastructure and bureaucracy is built around the "pot of gold". She argues this may be one of the main causes that coutnries squander such valuable resources without ever refocusing them on the development of people (health and education) or the country's economy (such as through the extension of value-added activities).

Overall, an interesting proposition, though I am not sure this is a phenomenon unique to countries faced with the plenty of oil or other products. It is a strong case that inefficiencies are added through bureaucracies, but I still believe much of the damage is caused by the traditional Dutch disease.

3 out of 5 stars Great points - but somewhat academic.......2002-07-01

This book provides an iron-clad explanation for the failure of oil exporters - especially developing nations - to use their raw material blessings as a lever for improvement. The author provides outstanding comparisons among oil exporters, along with amazing parallels to the Spanish empire. There's an important point here about how human nature and government limitations often doom these "blessed" countries to failure. Call it the King Midas effect...

On the downside, her point is clearly made in the first 50 pages. In the remainder of the book the author goes into too much detail regarding the political evolution of Venezuela. And she fails to end with a reader-friendly synopsis or a glimpse of the future.

With today's troubles in the Mideast, this book could have been a lay-reader best seller. Unfortunately the author's writing is aimed more toward Political Science professors than the general public. Still worth the purchase, however.

3 out of 5 stars The Paradox of Plenty: Oil Booms and Petro-States........2001-08-01

"[A]fter benefiting from the largest transfer of wealth ever to occur without war, why have most oil-exporting developing countries suffered from economic deterioration and political decay?" In her long-awaited study, Karl offers a sophisticated cross-cultural reply to this question, focusing on the capital-deficit countries of Algeria, Indonesia, Iran, Nigeria, and Venezuela. Finding inadequate the existing explanations that focus almost exclusively on economic disruption (the "Dutch Disease"), she notes the deep social and political roots of the problems and adds these much-needed dimensions to the discussion.

Her complex argument boils down to this: oil booms (like all commodity booms) put enormous power in the hands of the state that suddenly has vast sums at its disposal. "How these states collect and distribute taxes, in turn, creates incentives that pervasively influence the organization of political and economic life and shapes government preferences to respect to public policies." In other words, "the origin of a state's revenues influences the full range of its political institutions." What appears to be a chance to do almost anything, it turns out, is in fact a very circumscribed choice.

Though a Latin American specialist, Karl understands the Algerian and Iranian encounters with oil and has insights to offer all those who study Middle Eastern oil states-as well as those who lead them.

4 out of 5 stars very good book about what oil does to a country.......2000-04-25

Basically, this book is a very strong and appealing summary of the consequences of over-reliance on oil production for developing countries. Not only results, but also underlying causes are considered: most attention is given to institutional and political aspects of what Karl calls "petrolization" of the state. He argues that petroleum is the only product, which creates strong long-lasting ties among politicians and institutions involving them into constant seeking of oil revenues (for their own as well as for state benefit). Future decisions in this environment are determined by actions taken in the past, which makes it very hard to break away from this circle. The case of Venezuela is especially well considered; much of the information is taken from Karl's conversations with Venezuelans top governmental officials and, hence, is of a great value. Carefully chosen data are well presented on a passionate manner which conveys the dramatic nature of changes brought by petroleum in this country.

The future of new oil-producers becomes less shinning as we look at the data provided by the author. Only Norway, who managed to overcome most of the negative aftermaths of its oil windfalls, deemed as a winner within the group of oil producers. Karl ascribes this success to a well-prepared and robust bureaucracy and stable democracy existing in Norway.

The only problem I see in this book is its superficial treatment of economic factors related to "petrolization" of the state. In this context, Oil Windfalls: Blessing or Curse? by Alan Gelb and Associates (1988) or Sustainable Development In Mineral Economies by R. Auty and Mikesell (1998) or would be the best supplement.

    Book Description

    UNPREDICTABILITY, SURPRISE, AND LUCK.

As it turns out, these are the constants in our communities of work.

In ACCIDENTAL CONVERSATIONS, author Jack Ricchiuto proposes that since the best things in life tend to evolve unpredictably, we have the best chance of discovering what's new in equally unpredictable conversations. Accidental conversations are prime media and metaphors for managing life's continuous evolution of new possibilities.

According to Ricchiuto, “We fall in love, begin our best adventures, and discover our most significant resources in informal, quite unplanned conversations. They are expressions of life's infinite capacity for surprise … However much we try to surprise-proof the world with our goals, beliefs, and plans, life sustains change as its prime constant.”

Practicing a bias for agility over fixed agendas, more organizations are engaging people in new conversations energized by questions reflecting this bias:

    > What does planning and leadership look like when our most enduring constant in our work is change?

    > How would we design our organizations if we treated surprise as prime opportunities for getting new things done?

    > Why is that luck is such a constant companion in all new discoveries and connections and is it possible that we actually create the conditions for our own luck?

Weaving an engaging fabric of new science applications, personal anecdotes, and Zen wisdom from a wide cross-section of thought leaders, Accidental Conversations explores the new requirements for thriving in a dynamic information environment.  Joining the emerging genre of manifestos for organizational transformation, Accidental Conversations presents an A-Z format addressing 26 dimensions of freedom that unleash the power of serendipity in communities of work.

With over 25 years consulting with organizations across over 20 industries, Ricchiuto is the author of Collaborative Creativity (Oakhill Press 1997), conference speaker, and writer on best business practices.

        5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2007-09-13

I am currently in Microbiology and this book is very helpful with its layout. I am a visual learner and this book has exceeded my expectations so far. The only complaint/comment I have is that the pictures are very small and compact therefore making it hard to color with anything other than colored pencils. I would have liked crayon as they have better colors but beggers can't be choosers. Great book overall!!!

5 out of 5 stars Paper is too thin, colors bleed through, otherwise it is terrific.......2007-05-05

I took microbiology and anatomy at the same time. I used coloring books in both classes and they were a big help. The only complaint I have about the microbiology book is that the paper is thin, lighter than the paper stock used in the anatomy coloring book. I placed a paper between the pages so the markers didn't bleed onto the next plate, but you could see the colors through the page and sometimes it was distracting trying to read the information on the page. I tried coloring with pencils and it worked out fine, it just takes longer to use pencils as opposed to markers.

I highly recommend the book if you are a visual and tactile learner.

        5 out of 5 stars Thoruough.......2006-03-24

The best thing about coloring books is that they are a form of entertainment while being a tool for learning. That is my experience with this book. Enjoyable, thorough, and money well spent

        4 out of 5 stars good for a warm-up.......2006-03-03

This would be a great book to go thru before you take micro. It keeps the material simple and provides pleasing visuals to help you see what's going on.

5 out of 5 stars great learning aid.......2003-03-20

This is a great learning tool to help memorize key microbes and other needed material. Visual learning is so much easier and more fun because facts stick to your brain more. I also used the following which is also sold on amazon.com:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questons and Answers (ISBN: 0971999635)
The second book helped me to know the kind of questions to prepare for on my exams. I am a undergraduate student and found both books very helpful. In fact, I got a 93 average in my college microbiology class.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of paper.......2005-08-29

The "Register" provides nothing that isn't easily available on NFL dot COM. This is nothing more than a listing of all players and their basic stats. Perhaps worth about $4, certainly not $19.

It's a shame that STATS, Inc doesn't publish the "Pro Football Handbook" or "The 100-Yard War: Pro Football Revealed" books any more. Those books were fantastic. Compared to them the "Register" is nothing more than a waste of paper.

5 out of 5 stars An important publication for football fans.......2005-07-27

This year's Register is similar to those have come before it, making it an excellent publication to keep with you on Sunday afternoons.

Every player likely to play in the NFL this season is included, along with comprehensive career stats, biographical information, transactions in which they were involved, and any career highlights they may have. The same goes for coaches, whose careers stats are also included. For this year's expected crop of rookies, college stats are included.

There is no analysis, only statistics, which is to be expected from the Register. What makes this publication so valuable is that, even with many stats available on the Internet, this is still the fastest and easiest way to find what you're looking for when it comes to football statistics.

Along with the 2005 NFL Record and Fact Book, this is a book that football fans should have readily available during the NFL season.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Actually Does What It Says..........2007-05-12

This book is filled with a good number of memory improvement tricks and techniques that are presented in a conversational style and kept to roughly a single page in length.

In addition to showing you various techniques, the author subtly weaves in ways that improve your observation skills, helps you form creative associations, and that causes you to remember.

There are little exercises through out the book, but they are just that - samples. There's nothing boring or done by rote. As you're reading along, several pages later (which could days later), the author indirectly tests you, validating that if you even try the technique, you get high return with minimal effort. Simply practicing seems to improve your memory even more.

Instead of spending money on all those mega-memory courses, this book will get you there in shorter time and in a much more entertaining manner.

5 out of 5 stars Revisiting past reads.......2006-11-10

I originally read this book many (many) years ago and had lost track of it and wanted to re-read. So, I did the most natural thing to do -- find it on Amazon. And, as they say, the rest is history. Received it and enjoyed it the second time around. Amazon and their partners in products have not disappointed me yet -- (knock on wood).

What can I say in simple words?
Another unique step by step guide which helps you to start use your memory. The great memory you already have. Harry proves that by teaching you how to take advantage of it.
Easy to understand techniques and explanations in this unique... Harry's style.
You work at your own pace. Author (like in other books) gives you a chance to work the way you like.
As a memory developmnent specialist I can say, that what Harry teaches is nuts and bolts of what you really need to improve your memory. Even single technique from this book can help you a lot.
But to be honest- you have to start and pracice!
I love that book and other books of this great author.

5 out of 5 stars Step By Step Plan To Memory Improvement.......2004-01-18

I have read other of Harry Lorayne's books and they have all been valuable.

But this one is unique in that it gives a page by page plan to learn the techniques. You can go through it at your own pace and it's presented in an easy to understand way. You can spend as much time as necessary with each page. You can finish reading it understanding the mechanics of memory a lot better, and even a surface practicing of the techniques will help a lot.

Of course, systematic practice will work even better.

Some of Lorayne's other books present more detailed information, but this one is a good, solid presentation of memory improvement and is maybe one of the easiest ones to begin to put into practice for immediate improvement.

It is especially good for people who have had no prior exposure to memory improvement and would like to have some practical advice that they can implement right away.

Try it! You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars The Master Whizz of Memory Power.......2003-11-20

Harry Lorayne, the master of `Memory Power' says : Memory is an essential food for success. Memory boost the confidence for success. It creates an annoying situation.Memory isn't fading but it's probably you didn't give the memory system the information it required. Elaborate scrapbook pages can often take hours to arrange, but reasonably attractive ones really can be assembled pretty quickly, as Raquel Boehme demonstrates in 10-Minute Scrapbook Pages. With loads of stickers, some markers, assorted die-cuts, and the occasional decorative-edge ruler, Boehme creates dozens of pages devoted to subjects like kids at play and at school, family outings, holiday celebrations, birthdays, and new babies. Most of the designs consist of simple embellishments bordering plain white pages, sometimes shown with the author's own photos for placement suggestions and sometimes without any photos in place. None of the designs are terribly exciting, and a whole albumful of such pages might become monotonous, but their ease of assembly does increase their appeal--particularly for beginners or as quick additions to a collection of more time-consuming and varied pages. -- Amy Handy

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed In This One.......2001-08-28

I was disappointed in this book. Although the author has some cute ideas on combining stickers, there isn't a lot new here. I didn't need to read the introduction to know this had to be someone who worked with the Creative Memories philosophy: use lots of pictures on white pages and get those albums done! A lot of folks love CM, and I see its advantages. However, I prefer more varied backgrounds and didn't expect this to be CM slanted. It's a well made book with lots of color but not at all what I hoped for.

                    1 out of 5 stars Disappointed - Not inspired.......2001-06-28

I was disappointed in the lack of creativity shown in the layouts and photography. The stock photography looked very dated. I have seen better layouts featured on line by amatuers. There are much better books and periodicals out there.

3 out of 5 stars Delivers ideas for quick pages in one page.......2001-02-27

This book is basically 125 pages of pictures with a scant five pages at the beginning of instructions, suggestions, and mostly a quickie lesson on basic scrapbooking. The layouts in this book use a few simple tools (markers, rulers, stickers, die cuts), and use them over and over. While the ideas probably do take about ten minutes to plan (how long does it take YOU to think of a cliche to title your page with?), the timeframe for the pages really shows.

However, what the author does with her scant few tools is wonderful, and she puts together some really nice-looking sticker collages. I was expecting more than just stickers & die-cuts, but I got a few ideas from the book.

If it sounds at all interesting, I would suggest you check it out at the library, flip through it to get some ideas, and then return it to the library. Spend your $25 on stuff for your scrapbook.

3 out of 5 stars For Beginners Only.......2000-10-09

A few cute ideas, but like another reviewer mentioned, some of the ideas are very similar to Creative Memories and look like direct adaptations from the CM idea books. Most of the concepts are repeated thoughout the book with just a few sticker & title changes, and I noticed at least 2 ideas repeated 2-3 times in the book (identical).

The format of the book is nice with the layouts being displayed in a nice format with large pictures so you can see all the details. The materials listings are lacking any detail. Most read, Materials Used: Marker, stickers, decorative ruler. What COLOR marker? Which stickers?

On a personal note, there are many beautiful photos used for the layouts, but I noticed no attempt to match the color scheme of the layout with that of the pictures, nor do some of the designs go with the general theme of the pictures. There are some great beach photos on a layout titled "PARTY". Huh? Or the excellent black & white heritage photo with the title "Over the Hill" and dancing skeleton stickers. I think a little more thought could have gone into coordinating layouts more appropriate to these photos. It would also be better in a spiral bound format rather than a hardcover so that users can leave the book open while copying the page.

If you are a long time scrapper or fan of CM idea books, then don't bother. There is nothing really innovative or "fresh" in this book. This might be good for a beginner or someone who is a fan of sticker art.

As negative as my review sounds, these are just my honest thoughts and impressions. I still give it 3 stars for the few ideas I did get and because of the large photos of the layouts, but there's definitely room to improve.

She has great ideas, however I've seen most of them before through the company Creative Memories (which I really prefer- simple, classic, not cluttered, and your pictures are the main thing on the page- not decoration).

                              Book Description

At Helen's home, there are no telephones or electric lights. Cars have not yet been invented, so she and her sister and brothers must walk a mile to school, even in freezing weather. Without refrigeration, they must harvest ice from the pond. But at night she and her family gather around the woodstove to hear stories of castles and princes in hiding. They take horse-drawn sleigh rides, snug under buffalo robes and wool blankets; skate in the moonlight; and on Christmas morning have real maple syrup for breakfast. With absorbing details of country life and elegant, hand-colored woodcuts, this book captures the strength of family, the magic of Christmas, and the love of place all year long.
