The Paradox of Plenty: Oil Booms and Petro-States (Studies in International Political Economy , No 26)
Terry Lynn Karl Manufacturer: University of California Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0520207726 |
Book Description
The Paradox of Plenty explains why, in the midst of two massive oil booms in the 1970s, oil-exporting governments as different as Venezuela, Iran, Nigeria, Algeria, and Indonesia chose common development paths and suffered similarly disappointing outcomes. Meticulously documented and theoretically innovative, this book illuminates the manifold factors--economic, political, and social--that determine the nature of the oil state, from the coherence of public bureaucracies, to the degree of centralization, to patterns of policy-making.Customer Reviews:
Interesting contribution to theory.......2003-03-11
The main thesis is that aside from the traditional Dutch disease of such intense exporters, there is an organizational component in the downfall of such plenty. For example, she argues that a large self-serving infrastructure and bureaucracy is built around the "pot of gold". She argues this may be one of the main causes that coutnries squander such valuable resources without ever refocusing them on the development of people (health and education) or the country's economy (such as through the extension of value-added activities).
Overall, an interesting proposition, though I am not sure this is a phenomenon unique to countries faced with the plenty of oil or other products. It is a strong case that inefficiencies are added through bureaucracies, but I still believe much of the damage is caused by the traditional Dutch disease.
Great points - but somewhat academic.......2002-07-01
On the downside, her point is clearly made in the first 50 pages. In the remainder of the book the author goes into too much detail regarding the political evolution of Venezuela. And she fails to end with a reader-friendly synopsis or a glimpse of the future.
With today's troubles in the Mideast, this book could have been a lay-reader best seller. Unfortunately the author's writing is aimed more toward Political Science professors than the general public. Still worth the purchase, however.
The Paradox of Plenty: Oil Booms and Petro-States........2001-08-01
Her complex argument boils down to this: oil booms (like all commodity booms) put enormous power in the hands of the state that suddenly has vast sums at its disposal. "How these states collect and distribute taxes, in turn, creates incentives that pervasively influence the organization of political and economic life and shapes government preferences to respect to public policies." In other words, "the origin of a state's revenues influences the full range of its political institutions." What appears to be a chance to do almost anything, it turns out, is in fact a very circumscribed choice.
Though a Latin American specialist, Karl understands the Algerian and Iranian encounters with oil and has insights to offer all those who study Middle Eastern oil states-as well as those who lead them.
Middle East Quarterly, December 1997
very good book about what oil does to a country.......2000-04-25
The future of new oil-producers becomes less shinning as we look at the data provided by the author. Only Norway, who managed to overcome most of the negative aftermaths of its oil windfalls, deemed as a winner within the group of oil producers. Karl ascribes this success to a well-prepared and robust bureaucracy and stable democracy existing in Norway.
The only problem I see in this book is its superficial treatment of economic factors related to "petrolization" of the state. In this context, Oil Windfalls: Blessing or Curse? by Alan Gelb and Associates (1988) or Sustainable Development In Mineral Economies by R. Auty and Mikesell (1998) or would be the best supplement.

Accidental Conversations
Jack Ricchiuto Manufacturer: DesigningLife Books ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0966170326 |
Book Description
UNPREDICTABILITY, SURPRISE, AND LUCK.As it turns out, these are the constants in our communities of work.
In ACCIDENTAL CONVERSATIONS, author Jack Ricchiuto proposes that since the best things in life tend to evolve unpredictably, we have the best chance of discovering what's new in equally unpredictable conversations. Accidental conversations are prime media and metaphors for managing life's continuous evolution of new possibilities.
According to Ricchiuto, We fall in love, begin our best adventures, and discover our most significant resources in informal, quite unplanned conversations. They are expressions of life's infinite capacity for surprise However much we try to surprise-proof the world with our goals, beliefs, and plans, life sustains change as its prime constant.
Practicing a bias for agility over fixed agendas, more organizations are engaging people in new conversations energized by questions reflecting this bias:
> What does planning and leadership look like when our most enduring constant in our work is change?
> How would we design our organizations if we treated surprise as prime opportunities for getting new things done?
> Why is that luck is such a constant companion in all new discoveries and connections and is it possible that we actually create the conditions for our own luck?
Weaving an engaging fabric of new science applications, personal anecdotes, and Zen wisdom from a wide cross-section of thought leaders, Accidental Conversations explores the new requirements for thriving in a dynamic information environment. Joining the emerging genre of manifestos for organizational transformation, Accidental Conversations presents an A-Z format addressing 26 dimensions of freedom that unleash the power of serendipity in communities of work.
With over 25 years consulting with organizations across over 20 industries, Ricchiuto is the author of Collaborative Creativity (Oakhill Press 1997), conference speaker, and writer on best business practices.

Step By Step Plan To Memory Improvement.......2004-01-18
But this one is unique in that it gives a page by page plan to learn the techniques. You can go through it at your own pace and it's presented in an easy to understand way. You can spend as much time as necessary with each page. You can finish reading it understanding the mechanics of memory a lot better, and even a surface practicing of the techniques will help a lot.
Of course, systematic practice will work even better.
Some of Lorayne's other books present more detailed information, but this one is a good, solid presentation of memory improvement and is maybe one of the easiest ones to begin to put into practice for immediate improvement.
It is especially good for people who have had no prior exposure to memory improvement and would like to have some practical advice that they can implement right away.
Try it! You won't be disappointed.

10-Minute Scrapbook Pages: Hundreds Of Easy, Innovative Designs
Raquel Boehme Manufacturer: Sterling ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 080691971X |
Amazon.com
Elaborate scrapbook pages can often take hours to arrange, but reasonably attractive ones really can be assembled pretty quickly, as Raquel Boehme demonstrates in 10-Minute Scrapbook Pages. With loads of stickers, some markers, assorted die-cuts, and the occasional decorative-edge ruler, Boehme creates dozens of pages devoted to subjects like kids at play and at school, family outings, holiday celebrations, birthdays, and new babies. Most of the designs consist of simple embellishments bordering plain white pages, sometimes shown with the author's own photos for placement suggestions and sometimes without any photos in place. None of the designs are terribly exciting, and a whole albumful of such pages might become monotonous, but their ease of assembly does increase their appeal--particularly for beginners or as quick additions to a collection of more time-consuming and varied pages. -- Amy HandyBook Description

Delivers ideas for quick pages in one page.......2001-02-27
However, what the author does with her scant few tools is wonderful, and she puts together some really nice-looking sticker collages. I was expecting more than just stickers & die-cuts, but I got a few ideas from the book.
If it sounds at all interesting, I would suggest you check it out at the library, flip through it to get some ideas, and then return it to the library. Spend your $25 on stuff for your scrapbook.
For Beginners Only.......2000-10-09
The format of the book is nice with the layouts being displayed in a nice format with large pictures so you can see all the details. The materials listings are lacking any detail. Most read, Materials Used: Marker, stickers, decorative ruler. What COLOR marker? Which stickers?
On a personal note, there are many beautiful photos used for the layouts, but I noticed no attempt to match the color scheme of the layout with that of the pictures, nor do some of the designs go with the general theme of the pictures. There are some great beach photos on a layout titled "PARTY". Huh? Or the excellent black & white heritage photo with the title "Over the Hill" and dancing skeleton stickers. I think a little more thought could have gone into coordinating layouts more appropriate to these photos. It would also be better in a spiral bound format rather than a hardcover so that users can leave the book open while copying the page.
If you are a long time scrapper or fan of CM idea books, then don't bother. There is nothing really innovative or "fresh" in this book. This might be good for a beginner or someone who is a fan of sticker art.
As negative as my review sounds, these are just my honest thoughts and impressions. I still give it 3 stars for the few ideas I did get and because of the large photos of the layouts, but there's definitely room to improve.

A Christmas Like Helen's
Natalie Kinsey-Warnock Manufacturer: Houghton Mifflin ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0618231374 |
Book Description
At Helen's home, there are no telephones or electric lights. Cars have not yet been invented, so she and her sister and brothers must walk a mile to school, even in freezing weather. Without refrigeration, they must harvest ice from the pond. But at night she and her family gather around the woodstove to hear stories of castles and princes in hiding. They take horse-drawn sleigh rides, snug under buffalo robes and wool blankets; skate in the moonlight; and on Christmas morning have real maple syrup for breakfast. With absorbing details of country life and elegant, hand-colored woodcuts, this book captures the strength of family, the magic of Christmas, and the love of place all year long.Books:
