Dry.......2004-06-14
I am required to read this book for a Bachelors class and so, this has been the worst book I have been required to read. Talk about your mind wandering. Good thing it is only 280 pages long.

Customer Reviews:
Don't ignore the low ratings!.......2007-10-03
Before enrolling in my immunology class, I checked the reviews for the textbook (Kuby). The majority were favorable, so I ignored the few low ratings. Big mistake!
The reason for 2 stars instead of 1 is that the diagrams and figures are well done. The text, however, is rambling, disorganized, and sometimes even contradictory. The review questions at the end of the chapters sometimes ask things not in the text, and other times the answers provided at the back of the book contradict the information in the chapter. Which is correct? It is up to you to go hunt down that information, which is not an efficient use of your study time.
My other complaint is that the science is often presented as a history lesson, which adds unnecessary length to the text. While it is somewhat interesting to know when discoveries were made and how the theory has evolved over time, this is rarely the best way to learn a subject.
As a caveat, I have no experience with any other immunology textbook, so I do not know how this one would compare.
Difficult to follow due to poor organization, errors.......2007-01-31
This textbook is very unfriendly to anyone wishing to study Immunology, especially for the first time. Information is densely packed, out of order, and many paragraphs trail off into tangents that do not correspond to the title of the current page or section. Many errors and mistypes, which caused my professor to provide a sheet of textbook corrections on the first day of class. Completing chapter questions very difficult due to the shortcomings of the text. If you are studying this book, be prepared to read into every little detail and still not understand basic concepts. I did very well in this class, but this book caused a lot of stress. Good luck!
Written in Baby Language .......2006-10-30
Pros: If you're a lazy student, you could get all the information very quickly by merely reading the figures and then reading the chapter summary. Also, the authors try to put an emphasis on describing experiments that led to the discovery of major concepts in immunology and also put in quite a few correlations to clinical pathophysiologies that result from inappropriate immune response. Since this information is simplified, you don't need to wade through all the details to get to the general point.
Cons: There are numerous and major grammatical and conceptual mistakes that would mix up a person who is not already familiar with the topic (example: on the schematic picture of the antibody, the heavy chain is labelled as the light chain, and the light chain is labelled as the heavy chain). This book is written at the middle school level; it is not appropriate for college level courses. It is very frustrating to read because every key point in a chapter is repeated at least five more times within the chapter itself and then once more whenever a related term comes up in a future chapter. It is a waste time to read this book cover to cover, as 60% of the time you will just be reading reiterations of previous points. Apart from this, concepts are so simplified that they described only in a vague and generalized sense, such that you only get the most superficial knowledge. If you focused, the contents of this book could be learned completely within 2 days. This book is probably worth about $25, but definitely not $85.
This book is handy when you got Lyme.......2006-03-15
Because I got Lyme's disease this book is of interest to me.
I found out through this book why my platelets where up.
see p. 349 : when the membrane phospholipids are perturbed they degenerate to arachnidonic acid and in the end resulting in thromboxanes, which cause platelet aggregation and vasoconstriction, and also the result is prostaglandines.
This page alone to me was worth the price of the book, because when you got Lyme, every bit of information is vital.
Poorly written, poorly organized.......2005-12-03
This book is poorly organized on all three levels of writing.
THE SENTENCE
If you've ever take a course in non-fictional, instructive writing (like the kind used for an immunology textbook) you will find that the authors do a very poor job. Their sentence structures are so poorly organized that the reader is required to spend so much more energy understanding the structure of the sentence before they can even begin to understand the meaning. In most cases a sentence should begin with what the last sentence left off with and it should end with what the next sentence will begin with. This isn't the case and so while the concepts aren't that difficult to understand, the text adds to the difficulty of comprehension.
THE PARAGRAPH / SECTION
For some reason the authors have developed the propensity to explain occurences out of chronological order. This was particularly an issue in the texts on B cells and T cells. Had each chapter been written in the order that B and T cells mature and act, it would have been monumentally easier and shorter without leaving out any information. Instead the authors pick at the topic here and there until all the information is present. It is not enough as a writer to put down all the facts, but they must also be assembled in a coherent order for the greatest ease of understanding by someone new to the topic. I can't, however, say that the authors never pay attention to order; there are in fact several instances where a process is described in the exact opposite order in which it happens!
THE BOOK
The overall organization of the entire textbook is very poor. It must be mentioned at least three to four times per chapter that more information on a given topic is available several chapters ahead or behind where you're currently reading. First off, that's what an index is for - to know where all info on any given topic is located in the book. Second, this lengthens the book in two ways -- you have to read an extra sentence or two about where more information is; it requires extra text to reintroduce an idea already introduced. The reintroduction of topics makes the book begin to feel repetitive and if you're reading it for a class (which means not always cover to cover) you begin to wonder whether you've already read something.
In short the organization is illogical and confusing, requiring more time to study because it's longer than necessary and can't be read quickly.

Useful for Canoeists and Kayakers.......2002-10-11
If you want to know where the water flows in Massachusetts, this is the book. It shows the major river systems throughout the state and the significant tributaries within them. Although it was probably intended for environmental study, it could be very useful to canoeist and kayakers. A rating system describes the smoothness and scenic attractiveness of many navigable rivers, as well as showing the locations of dams.

From Dirt To Turf, There Is Room For An Owner With Big Dreams.......2007-03-25
It may come as a surprise to casual fans of horse racing but the vast majority of owners at most tracks are from area farms. These race horse owners - who are oftentimes trainers of their racers - continue to be the foundation of the sport at the numerous mid-level tracks nationwide.
Authors Janet Del Castillo and Lois Schwartz takes the reader through the paces to get a Thoroughbred to the races; from building a track on a farm, the exercising of the runners and how to haul them to and from the track.
Other key issues covered include how to properly manage a budget to make a successful run in the sport, training techniques to properly prepare a racer and the variety of legal medications that are used on the athletes. There is a good directory of race tracks and organizations throughout the country.
The book is a great resource for those looking to take that step into the sport or for fans looking to understand an important - but oftentimes overlooked - facet of the industry.
The next winner of the Kentucky Derby is not be clocking workouts in someone's "backyard" training track, but such a runner just may be the next summertime star at a nearby track. Backyard Race Horse describes how that can be accomplished through proper financial and strategic planning.
Nice place to start........2007-01-18
This is a very comprehensive book which covers a broad range of topics relative to training race horses. Because of it's broad scope it does not cover the minute details of training as some other books might...but as a survey of the subject it does fine. It is written well and organized extemely well. It is a good book to start with and will provide the reader with enough background information to be able to ask intelligent questions relative to the books subject matter. A good value.

Answers to Student Visa FAQ's.......2004-06-21
As the International Coordinator for my department at a Technical University in Austria, the book was extremely helpful in answering "student visa" related questions for a study abroad semester in the USA. For many Austrian students this book has been a major step forward in trying to figure out the complexities of getting a US student visa. I would like to thank the authors for making my job a whole lot easier.
Perfect Overview.......2004-01-07
Actually, the book is surprising. All of the relevant facts regarding immigration and visa problems are covered! Especially for students who want to spend some months of their study time in the USA, the information is definitively helpful. Currently, I - personally - do not plan to immigrate; but if I will do so in the future, this book will be my first information source!
Easy and comprehensive.......2003-12-31
I found this immigration book easy to use both for reference and sometimes just to read because of the personal way it is written. Most helpful for me was the comprehensive listing of US visas with all the forms requirements laid out clearly. I also read the new Green Card lottery requirements with interest because they have just changed.
Regulations made fascinating.......2003-11-15
Who would have thought that a book the the knotty problem of immigration could actually be fun! This book reads like a novel, and answers questions like a detective story. You can read it from front to back, enjoying the true life inquiries of people "on the edge" of becoming citizens. Or you can go right to the sections affecting you--either by using the detailed table of contents or the index. Since the format is question and answer, the content is never dull. And the multiple appendixes provide addresses, phone numbers, even web sites--along with definitions and the names of government and private organizations--to help keep you up to date on new developments. No jargon. No "legalese." Everything is readable, understandable, and authentic. This book will even tell you how to arrange for your Internet wife to come to the United States--or your brother by your parents who never married! Amazing.

Customer Reviews:
Worked!.......2007-09-19
This is one of two books that we used (along with the skittles candy each time my son went on his potty). Something worked :-). He really liked when I was reading this book to him in the bathroom.
Great Potty Book.......2007-09-11
This is such a cute book, and it touches on some good potty training issues, like the fact that it takes some time & practice, and sometimes accidents happen. It's a little long, though; although my 2-year-olds usually hang in there, it tests their attention span at times. Overall, I think it's one of the better potty training books I've seen.
A potty training book that actually deals with reality........2007-09-02
Unlike many potty training books, this one actually shows both a mother and a father working with a child through the entire experience of potty training: getting the potty chair, the mechanics of poo and pee, and transitioning from diapers to "big boy pants", all with the boy's parents there and helping with the mechanics as well as love and encouragement. If I had to do it over again, this would be a primary book in my potty training library.
Son loves this book!.......2007-08-24
My son is learning about using the potty and he absolutely loves this book about "Michael" and how he learns to use the potty. He'll talk about it too and say "just like Michael." I think the book really helps him relate to the whole idea and that other kids are doing it too... "just like Michael."
Good potty book.......2007-06-27
My 2 yr old likes this book. I appreciate that the little boy "Michael" in the book tries and tries but nothing happens (at first). The only thing I wasn't too keen on was that Michael's father taught him to urinate standing up the very next morning. I wished they could have saved this task until later in the book once Michael has mastered using the toliet.
