Understanding Peacekeeping provides a comprehensive and up to date introduction to the theory, practice and politics of contemporary peacekeeping. It evaluates the changing characteristics of the contemporary environment in which peacekeepers operate, what role peacekeeping plays in wider processes of global politics, the growing impact of non-state actors, and the major challenges facing peacekeepers in the future.Drawing on a wide range of historical and contemporary case studies, including: Afghanistan; Cambodia, Cyprus; the Democratic Republic of Congo; East Timor; El Salvador; Haiti, Liberia; Rwanda; Sierra Leone; Somalia; and the former Yugoslavia, this book develops an original conceptual framework to chart the evolution of the role of peacekeeping in global politics, and highlights the unique characteristics of different types of peacekeeping operations. Part 1 examines concepts and issues related to peacekeeping in global politics. Part 2 charts the historical development of peacekeeping from 1945 to the present. In Part 3, separate chapters are devoted to different types of peacekeeping operations: traditional peacekeeping; managing transition; wider peacekeeping; peace enforcement; and peace support operations. This work explores the application and structure of negotiation within existing international conflicts, and assesses the effectiveness, or otherwise, of such forms of dispute resolution. Active negotiation exists at all three levels in a conflict: strategic; operational; and tactical, and little analysis of negotiation exists at any level other than strategic. The text examines the role of negotiation and the skills required by any practitioner in the field. The aim of this work is to highlight the local, national, and international implications of negotiated outcomes in any current conflict, the political and interpersonal repercussions of mediatory work in an operational scenario, and the difficulties involved in being a negotiator as well as carrying out one's role as a politician, aid worker or soldier.

If you want to find out about the role of negotiation in today's world, and its place in conflict then this book will tell you more. It highlights the everyday approach to negotiation in the field, as well as larger perspectives from organisations such as the UN. I like the way in which it explains the problems and dilemmas faced by aid workers, soldiers or any other peacekeeper when trying to negotiate on the ground...few books examine this task and relate it to the real world. Easy to follow, thought provoking, it brings a new perspective to an area dominated, too much, by business books.

Face, Harmony, and Social Structure continues author P. Christopher Earley's investigations of the differences among people within organizations in different cultures. The concept of "face," as set forth by Earley, is a reflection of the individual's struggle for self-definition and understanding, of which a key component is a positioning of self relative to others is a social setting. Face is at the heart of social behavior and provides a consistent linking mechanism to understand behavior across cultures. Earley uses this concept of face as a basis for examination of cross-cultural organizational behavior from an individual's personal perspective. In this work, he develops a mid-range theory of individual behavior, self-concept, and interpersonal process in an effort to explain cultural differences in organizational settings. He sets up a cross-level model, and then attempts to provide a single coherent force--"face"--as an engine driving the entire system that can be used to integrate various social and organizational mechanisms in predicting people's behavior. This understanding of how and why people behave certain ways is a critical tool for studying the impact of individual behavior on the functioning of organizations. Earley's work represents a new theory of self-presentation and face within a cross-cultural context, integrating a cross-level approach ranging from the individual to the organization and to the societal levels of discussion. Face, Harmony, and Social Structure is a truly interdisciplinary work that brings elements of psychology, sociology, and anthropology to organizational studies. It will be illuminating reading for professionals and scholars of management and organizational behavior, as well as to academics in cross-cultural psychology and anthropology.

The following six chapters describe the proteins of meat and fish, milk, eggs, cereals, legumes, oilseeds and single cell organisms, and present detailed information on the effects of conditions applied in storage and processing on the reactions in proteins and their impact on quality attributes of food products.

Perhaps her cause was just in writing this book, but her short-sighted ignorance of the repercussions was inexcusable. Because of the ban on DDT which largely resulted from Silent Spring, the WHO has estimated that around 20 MILLION children have died of malaria.
DDT was, & still is, one of the very best insecticides to control mosquitoes, the sole transporter of this deadly disease. Best of all, DDT is very NON-toxic to humans.
The need for DDT is so urgent that even the Sierra Club is justifying it's use inside houses in malaria stricken locations of Africa, South America, & Asia.

A Peak Lover's Guide to California Hiking.......2004-01-29
Ron Adkinson has written numerous hiking guides for Falcon Press. One suspects his massive list of publications is really meant to subsidize his true passion: hiking. Not a bad way to live. This particular guide covers much of Southern California and hidden within its pages are some true gems.
Adkin's book is divided into four parts: Death Valley, the Mojave National Preserve, Southern California Mountains, and Joshua Tree National Park. In each area he includes a number of hikes that are classics: beautiful hikes mentioned in many guides and on which you are certain to encounter many people. But the book also contains numerous out of the way gems that you won't find elsewhere. In the mountains section, for example, he includes Pacific Crest Trail rambles along Sierra Pelona ridge and the Scodie Mountains, scenic areas you won't find described elsewhere. Indeed, people hoping to "get away from it all" will find ample opportunity to do so among the pages of this book.
Adkinson has a strong bias towards climbing peaks. You won't find a lot of nature walks in this guide, although he does include a sprinkling of short family hikes (the Cholla Cactus Gardens in Joshua Tree is my favorite). But if you like good views, this is the guide to get. The only reason this book receives 4 stars instead of 5 is for what it does not cover. It is simply unthinkable that a guide to Southern California hiking should exclude the whole of San Diego and Orange Counties. These areas have some beautiful country that deserves coverage in a volume of this scope. Unfortunately the recent (2003) fires destroyed many fine hiking areas (including most of Rancho Cuyamaca State Park) so it is all the more important that modern guides update what is available in this area.
Despite the lack of comprehensive coverage implied by the title this is an excellent book. Get it and enjoy.

This book is one of my favorites, because it has lots of action, including 2 battles going on at the same time; one between Elyon and Phobos, and the other between W.I.T.C.H. and Cedric, who is now a mutant bug!

When I first saw this book's title i'm thinking, YES! After what Elyon and the Guardians have fought for...
It finally pays off! Elyon defeats Phobos, and the Guardians defeat a newly morphed Cedric. The Oracle of Candracar drops the veil and the Guardians see an old friend, Hay Lin's grandmother. But Will's hair looks longer...
Anyways, I think instead of spelling Cadracar in the books C-a-n-d-r-a-c-a-r, they should spell it the way they spell it in the original comics and they spell it K-a-n-d-r-a-k-a-r. Anyway, I'm glad that Elyon deafeated Phobos. And no, the Guardians didn't fight Phobos, (Which really stinks) they fought Cedric.
