The former socialist countries’ transition to market economies is one of the momentous transformations in modern history. The pace and degree of success have varied widely, and there is increasing divergence in performance, structure, and institutions among the transition economies. These differences are largely determined by country-specific conditions and political configurations. This book compares the experiences of the countries involved over the first ten years to determine what has worked and failed, as well as the nature of the challenges that lie ahead.

After two overviews of the transition process to date, the book presents eleven specific country cases: the reunification of East and West Germany; the most successful transition countries, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Croatia, and Slovenia; the less successful experience of countries in the former Soviet Union, namely, Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine; and the dissimilar developments in two major Balkan countries, Bulgaria and Romania. The final section summarizes the policy lessons of the different experiences. The contributors, who include ministers, government officials, academics, and leaders of international monetary institutions, stress the need for greater emphasis on institutional building and on the enforcement of contracts.

Transition is a report card on the first decade of the transformation of central and eastern European countries into free-market, private-property economies. The introductory chapter by coeditors Mario Blejer and Marko Skreb is an excellent summary of fourteen diverse contributions to this volume. Chapters by Linn, Kolodko, Gaidar, and Larosiere deal with transition in general. These authors discuss alternative methods of institutional restructuring, identify some major issues and problems of the transition process, and evaluate observed results. Contributions by Hagen and Strauch, Dabrowski, Halpern and Nemenyi, Dlouchy, Sonje and Vujcic, Bole, Nuti, Aslund, Mihov, and Daianu describe the results of transition in East Germany, Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, and Romania.

The book contains much useful, although occasionally repetitive, information about the first decade of transition in the central Europe and the Baltic (CEB) states and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Explicitly or implicitly, most contributors favor the "holy trinity" of transition: macroeconomic stability, privatization, and liberalization. They generally praise the role of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and other international organizations, and they favor dirigisme as a method of transition. There is no shortage of lists enumerating what CEB and CIS governments should have done or could have done better or still should do.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in dinosaurs, fossils and evolution. This book gives you all the information you would ever want about the Sauropod dinosaurs. The price of this book on Amazon.com may seem high, but you will never find this book anywhere else at a better price.

Indispensible for the specialist.......2006-03-09

For palaeontologists with an interest in sauropods, this volume is simply and unequivocally indispensible. Matt Wedel's chapter on postcranial skeletal pneumaticity is a particular highlight, but most of the papers are very valuable. The contributions are on the whole more substantial than those in the recent Carpenter and Tidwell volume on the same subject, "Thunder Lizards", being mostly written by sauropod specialists.

Be careful, though! This is not a book for the casual dinosaur enthusiast: the chapters are academic papers that are heavy going for those without the necessary background.

Pitch a lot is the message of this book. OK, Leo has made his point, but if you accept that there's not much else this book has to offer. I was hoping for a bit more insight and didn't get it here.

A common sense approach.......2002-10-02

Don't let the refreshing lack of complexity fool you. This book provides sound, common sense advice in easy to understand language. Many books on pitching advocate a "cloning approach" to a pitcher's delivery. Other books on pitching drills are confusing and overly technical. As Leo puts it, "Why turn throwing a baseball into a science project?" I got away from attempting to perfect my son's wind-up and delivery after reading this book. As long as the delivery is sound, I really don't think it matters exactly where you break your hands, how far away from the body the hands are when they break, exactly where the glove hand is when this is happening, etc, etc. If you find that other books are confusing you, how confused do you think your youngster is? Give Leo's approach a try.

A good introduction to pitching skills and throwing programs.......2000-06-22

Reasons to buy this book include: a) its emphasis on THROWING b) the simple presentation of proper technique c) throwing schedules and pitcher checkpoints d) the emphasis on supervision of the pitchers while they throw

This book is not so much about techniques as it is about a developing a philosophy concerning the training and conditioning of pitchers. As Mazzone points out, all the technique in the world is of no use if the pitcher can't go to the post when he is scheduled to. This book is not all inclusive concerning pitching, but how many books are? There is valuable information in this book, and coaches everywhere who are interested in getting the most from the arms on their staff should take the time to read it.

A Pitching Balk! - Not a Book!.......2000-05-29

I bought this book with a leap faith, believing that since it had been authored by one of the most capable, recognizable pitching coaches for the most pre-emininent pitching staffs in all of baseball, it couldn't help but be great. t's full of "Glavine does this, "What Maddux as he..." and "Smoltz is great when he...". The book is of little use for coaches of little league teams who wish to impart valuable information to their players or correct pitching flaws. Maybe coaching the Braves pitchers is the easiest job in baseball because you don't have to tell those players anything at all. Personally, as a coach, I've read quite a few books on the subject and view a number of videos. For step by step, clear instruction, I've found, essentially without exception the best to be ones produced by coaches of little league, high school or college instructors. This book is not for you if you're looking to be helpful to kids with pitching problems and questions. By buying on a leap of faith, I violated one of literature's oldest axioms; you can't tell a book by looking at the cover.

I Agree That The Book's Presentation Is Not Great.......2007-03-14

I never liked books that point out the wrong things. That is because you will remember those things more than the correct things as one reviewer rightly pointed out. I remember going to a cashier's training for spotting conterfeit money. Rather than show us conterfeits they made us spend hours examining genuine bills and later tried to throw in some conterfeits and they were easy to spot because we were so used to the real thing. That being said the book could have been made more effective by having more emphasis on the correct way to say these things and de-emphasis on the incorrect way of saying the same things.

This book will help you correct your Spanish Blunders.......2007-02-21

While I do think the author should change the box that says, "Avoid the Blunder" to "Speak Like a Native Speaker, Say..." and then list the correct phrase(s) to say, the content of the rest of the book is excellent. The author clearly states the rules to follow and gives good examples. The book is well written and comprehensive. To get past the minor shortcoming of the book, the reader can pencil in the correct way to say things into the blunder boxes so they're imprinted in the reader's brain. I also learned a lot from reading "Pitfalls of Spanish" but I find this book to be more comprehensive and with more numerous examples.

My favorite Spanish grammar book........2006-03-01

I like this book because it explains how English speakers incorrectly translate into Spanish. If you have studied languages, you know that one can never assume you may translate a phrase by looking something up in the dicctionary, putting on the proper ending to the words, and translating. It does not work. Translating directly into any langauge means mistakes. This book shows you how an English person would say something such as, " I like music." This is correct in English, but in Spanish if you said, "I like music," (meaning in a general sense) it would be wrong. You must instead say, "I like the music" (even if it is a general observation) There a hundreds of examples like that one above in the book. Buy this book, sound better!

Not the best book..........2006-01-23

Not the best book simply because it gives the examples of the WRONG things to say. I.e. the numerous "Avoid the Blunder..." text boxes which each include several examples of what NOT to say, with crosses next to every one of them. Sorry, but I think every time I peruse this book, the incorrect phrases are being drilled into my brain. I would like to see the correct way written alongside the blunders.

As such, this book is the last one of my small collection of spanish books that I would choose to pick up and read. Yes, in all honesty, I haven't read it... but that's why it deserves only two stars. For that reason & that and it is too advanced for me.

A big help in a small package.......2005-08-09

I must admit I initially hesitated to buy this book. Even when I saw that its price was extremely reasonable, I still balked. After all, I'd built a pretty extensive collection of Spanish reference books, and I hate spending money to get information I already have or know. Incidentally, after having studied Spanish for four years and even taking an advanced Spanish lit class in college, I was slowly preparing to take my state's test to become a certified translator. I figured this book couldn't possibly do me any good. How wrong I was!

While at a bookstore, I gave "Correct Your Spanish Blunders" a thorough once-over. The more I read, the more I became convinced that I needed this book. I am just about to finish reading the last 20 pages or so, and my highlighter has been going almost nonstop. I'll provide some examples of what I mean, but the book's format deserves a brief mention. "Correct Your Spanish Blunders" is divided into three sections: pronunciation and spelling, grammar, and vocabulary. The grammar section is by far the longest and is divided mostly along the lines of the parts of speech. Now, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that nouns and verbs are the flesh and blood of any language, but author Jean Yates gives even the lowly preposition its due in this book -- more than 30 pages.

It's info like this, though, that has more than justified my purchase of this book:
1. "Both the imperfect and the preterit of 'poder' may be translated as 'could,' and both the imperfect and the preterit of 'tener que' may be translated as 'had to.' (But) [t]he imperfect is used to describe a situation before its resolution. The preterit refers to a situation after its resolution."
2. "'Delante de'" and 'enfrente de' both mean 'in front of,' but they do not express the same concept. 'Delante de' expresses the concept 'ahead of,' as in a row or line. 'Enfrente de' expresses the concept 'facing.'"
3. I'd often wondered why the Spanish title of one of Paulo Coelho's books was "A orillas del rio Piedra, me senté y lloré" as opposed to "A *las* orillas ..." This book gave me the answer (and, as a nifty bonus, told me the rules of capitalization that apply to book and article titles in Spanish).

If you are an SSL member of the human race and you already knew the three tidbits above, pat yourself on the back because that's getting way deep into Spanish mastery. You probably don't need Jean Yates' help. Note to all the others: even the best Spanish teacher can correct only so many errors. If the thought of avoiding 99 percent of common mistakes sounds good to you, plunk down the money for this book and immediately dispel any fears of parting with some of that hard-earned dinero. Besides correcting your mistakes, you're almost certain to add nuance and panache to your Spanish. Y para colmo (and to top it all off), "Correct Your Spanish Blunders" is fairly small in size. You can take it with you for study or leave it on your reference shelf. But do keep an eye on it; it's likely to be the object of envy. I annually purchase a Louis L'amour book for my dad as he has become an avid reader of his books. The stories take him back to days of Roy Rogers and Trigger. A great read for those who love the duke and weekend westerns.

This set of cd's are a great listen-I listen to them at work and even though it would seem to be a distraction, these stories actually help me concentrate. Very enjoyable.
