Book Description
Students of organisation have used complexity theory in many different ways and for many different reasons. What characterises the writings of most `management thinkers', however, is that the authors are primarily concerned with the question of "how to make this complexity thing work for us?" This study takes a rather different approach. Ideas and concepts of the science of complexity are borrowed to develop the idea that organisations live lives of their own - an idea that is very much at odds with the dominant view that understands organisations as tools that we use to realise certain goals. To illustrate matters, the book discusses the developments of the organisation of Vitesse, a mediocre Dutch professional football club that according to its president needed to be transformed into a major player in the family entertainment industry.

Book Description
Braving the Currents systematically identifies, applies, and evaluates criteria to define success in complex multi-party natural resource disputes. The authors elucidate the full range of criteria for defining success that researchers, stakeholders, and practitioners have relied on as they have participated in, and reflected upon, environmental conflict resolution (CR) efforts. They examine 28 "success" criteria from many angles, present a method for systematically considering all the elements necessary for successful environmental CR, and then apply this analytic framework to eight specific western U.S. water conflicts. The criteria are assessed in terms of their accessibility, reliability, validity, and overall usefulness in evaluating specific conflict cases and different resolution methods.
The book concludes with observations about successfully resolved disputes, a summary of what the authors have learned through their extensive evaluations, and a discussion of how public policies can contribute to dispute prevention and management. While the cases focus on water conflicts, their processes and assessments are applicable to a wide body of cases.
At the suggestion of academic reviewers, the authors have included "Appendix A: A Guidebook", which enhances the book's text applicability by providing detailed instructions for case documentation and analysis.
This book will be of particular interest to students and instructors of conflict resolution, environmental studies, public policy, negotiation, and resource management; public and private sector managers, researchers, practitioners, and attorneys; and conflict resolution professionals.

Marine Conservation Biology: The Science of Maintaining the Sea's Biodiversity
ASIN: 0878935185
Release Date: 2005-08-01 |
Book Description
Principles of Conservation Biology, Third Edition features a wholly revised organization, emphasizing analyses of different categories of threat and approaches to conservation. Coverage has been expanded to incorporate both terrestrial and marine conservation issues, and efforts in the U.S. and across the globe.
Principles' eighteen chapters introduce the major themes and concepts of this diverse and dynamic field. The biological and social underpinnings of conservation problems and potential solutions are interwoven throughout the text, which is divided into three sections: foundations of the field, threats to biodiversity, and approaches to solving conservation problems. Guest essays and case studies provide a diversity of perspectives and real-world examples that add insight and provoke discussion. The text is richly illustrated, and concludes with an extensive glossary and bibliography.
This book is intended for use in conservation biology courses at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as by researchers and practitioners, and assumes a basic background in biology and ecology.

Conservation Biology review.......2007-03-09
Excellent book, either for the serious student or for someone just interested in the subject. However most of the graphics are in black and white, so it takes some getting used to, but there are some nice color plates in the middle of the book. It is generally written well and seldom assumes you know what they are talking about without an explanation of some of the concepts.
Impressed.......2006-03-05
The book was sent fairly quickly and packaged very well. The book is new as it was advertized. Would buy from seller again.
Great book.......2005-10-14
I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in this subject. It has a lot of great case studies and examples. Some conservation biologists call this one "the Concervation biology bible".

Book Description
This comprehensive key for identifying specimens of amphibians and reptiles in the U.S. and Canada--the first since 1983--incorporates the wealth of scientific findings generated by molecular systematics (the study of DNA to determine genetic relationships) and simplifies identification by making geographic origin a leading factor. A dichotomous key (that is, one that gives the user only two choices at each level of morphological scrutiny), it is designed for use in college-level herpetology or vertebrate biology courses. It will be especially useful as an effective tool for teaching the principles of taxonomy and for introducing students to the systematics of amphibians and reptiles. While it can serve to identify specimens in the field, it is intended primarily as a teaching tool for classifying preserved specimens whose geographic origins are known.
The dichotomous keys are supplemented by 257 line illustrations depicting the distinguishing morphological characteristics of salamanders, frogs and toads, turtles, alligators and crocodilians, amphisbaenians (wormlike lizards), lizards, and snakes. The drawings, along with frequent references to the species descriptions, maps, and photographs in the Peterson Field Guide Series, make the key user friendly and increase its appeal to undergraduate and amateur herpetologists.
Customer Reviews:
This is a great overview of herps!!.......2007-03-13
This book provides an extensive key to amphibians and reptiles in North America. If you are studying herpetology, this book has many diagrams in it that really help with keying out dinstinguishing characteristics. Plus, the book is set up simply in plain English. Other keys that I have used were not as extensive as this one, and they were usually confusing. This key takes away all the ambiguity.
Excellent for serious biologists.......2006-03-01
This breaks down characters for families very easily. The only draw back to this book is that it doesn't contain common names, but that can always be looked up. I recommend this book to any biologist or herpetologist. It also shows what the basic characters are with pictures.
An excellent dichotomous key for herpetofauna........1999-01-20
This key is a must for anyone that is seriously interested in reptiles or amphibians. For instructors of Herpetology lab this book will prove to be invaluable, the illustrations and current phylogenetic classifications will aid in teaching.

"Title" for my Review? Whazz wiff dat?.......2005-09-11
You can gleen some useful info from the book, but you'll have to scan through the fluff.
Padded & Stretched: Better Books Exist.......2004-04-11
I must give credit to the staff of In-Fisherman magazine, the authors of this book. They really know how to pad and stretch 100 pages into over 200!
First off, they spend 50 pages discussing various types of lakes and reservoirs. Unfortunately, knowing this won't help me catch a fish. Sure, a little bit of background material doesn't hurt, but 20% of the book?
Then they divide each season in multiple periods. Using this padding technique "Summer" is turned into "Pre-Summer, " "Summer Peak," The "Summer Period," and "Post-Summer." To the beginner this may imply a higher level of detail, but once you hit the water you won't remember these subtle variations. How many ways can you say, "As the water warms the fish move offshore into deeper water?"
Another stretching technique is the way they toss in many diagrams that are not easy to read and don't add any value. Maybe I'm dense, but seeing a topographic sketch of a lake point with eight different "X's" on it has yet to help me catch a fish.
To summarize, if you're an angler who wants to catch fish there are better books, such as Smallmouth Bass by Sternberg, part of the Hunting & Fishing Library series. At 160 pages, it is chock full of solid information, helpful tips, and informative color pictures, and even has an index!
Its Simple...........2001-06-29
If it says IN Fisherman on it, Buy it! They produce some of the best books and videos on freshwater fishing. Period! Full of current, scientific, and practical advice on the species you are after. If you don't learn from this book, then you probably helped write it.
Excellent book, very detailed and useful !.......1999-05-20
This book discusses fish movements and strategies for the different times of the year. You find out why you may have caught fish in the Summer then caught nothing in the Fall. Lots of diagrams. Teaches you what the fish are doing throughout the year and where they are doing it.

Excellent book.......2005-12-15
This is a great book on how to fish for largemouth. It covers everything, tackle, presentation, location, fish habits. It covers rivers, lakes, reservoirs, even farm ponds.
I was getting skunked one summer, and spent a couple of hours reading the chapter related to seasonal fishing patterns. Went out and hit the deep edge of the weedline, and there they were.
This is THE book I count on for fishing knowledge.

Book Description
From the author of A Gentle Madnessa book with more than seventy thousand copies in print that delighted bibliophiles everywherecomes a twenty-first-century guide to book collecting that deals with both the traditional methods of acquisition and the electronic tools now available on the Internet.Sharing the superb insight he has gathered from booksellers over the years, Nicholas Basbanes offers a refresher course on the fundamentals that endure, while questioning certain practices of doubtful validity. Topics include how to determine if a book is a first edition, how to spot book club editions, the importance of dust jackets, scouting the flea markets, how to work the book fairs, and the importance of handling the goods, as well as discussing less tangible issues like spotting trends and having a focus. Then he takes a long look at the pros and cons of Internet buying, illuminating how you can use these electronic tools to your advantage and making this the book no modern collector will want to be without.
Customer Reviews:
"A shelf of books bespeaks the soul whose hands have put it there.".......2005-10-23
A wonderful read about the world of books by one of the preeminent writers on the subject of book collecting.Using the word 'subject' to describe the passion of books is akin to using 'subject' to describe love or any other passion.Blame that on me,if you will, not Nicholas.
It seems I never get enough of these books about books and this is one of the best. Here we are given a look in on the wonderful life the author has in the world of the High End Collectors. Those like me,and that means all but a very miniscule number, who can only dream of attending and partaking in those auctions, where single rare books sell for tens of thousands, and lots or even complete personal libraries sell for sums equalling the national treasury of small countries. That doesn't mean reading about that sort of thing isn't very interesting;and the author has the ability to make one feel they are part of that activity. What one gets from this book is that anyone can have the same desires, same enjoyment, and all the rest of what comes along with having a passsion for reading, collecting, owning, sharing, arranging, their personal collection whether it is a small number of favorite volumes or some huge ammassment--it's their collecion and is what they have the ability, desire and resources to call their own.I suppose many who work with books like booksellers or library staff can even imagine the books around them are their own.I remember once reading somewhere, something to the effect that nobody ever really owns a book, but only has the privilege of being its caretaker for a while until it eventually passes on as its "owner" is sure to do--it's only a matter of time. This idea comes through very clearly as the author shows how collectors spend lifetimes searching for books that eventually end up in university, library and other collections.
The author describes the personalities he encounters and we can identify with all of them as we pursue our passion with books.
In a nutshell you'll get from this book that the only real difference between your collection and the world he writes about is a matter of scale
A great read and highly recommended to anyone who loves books and reading.
A most enjoyable book about books .......2004-11-27
This is a great book for anyone interested in collecting books, or who likes books, or even anyone just interested in what makes a book collectable. Different people adopt very different approaches and strategies to book collecting and Basbanes documents a number of them. The eccentric madness of it all is what makes it entertaining and I found that this quickly became a hard book to put down. After reading this I suspect that I will never look at books the same way again. The fundamentals of book collection are not unlike other forms of collection, so people who are self confessed "collectors" (You know who you are!) are likely to find this an exciting read. In among all the entertaining yarns is a pretty good starters guide to book collection, and this book contains a number of practical pointers to web sites and book sellers to get the novice started. Overall it was really enjoyable to read and very much a page turner.
An Indispensable Resource for Any Serious Book Collector.......2003-09-09
In "Among the Gently Mad," Basbanes declares, "the more you read or read about reading, the more you will uncover about other books." And, the more, it seems, you will get to know an ever-expanding circle of people who collect and/or sell books. All their stories are here...what they collect, how they collect them, how much they spend and on and on until the value of this book is almost hidden under their weight.
However, if you are serious about book collecting, "Among the Gently Mad" is a tremendous resource. Reading between the lines of other book collectors' stories, you will find out which web sites, bookstores, dealers, book fairs, organizations and other sources can help you fill out your collection. By the way, this is not just a book for those who collect rare books. An antiquarian book is simply described as any book that is worth more now than when first published. Basbanes's first rule of collecting books is to focus on subjects that hold your interest and, in fact, your collection should contain books you actually want to read. If you are gently mad, that is "taking delight in the pleasant touching of books long coveted," this book is an indispensable tool to fulfilling your own madness.
Couldn't put it down.......2003-09-08
In rapturous, elegant prose, the author envelops the reader in his consuming passion for books and the people who love to collect them; as the hours flew by while I curled up with Basbanes, I assuaged my guilt at forsaking mundane tasks with the right-on lines that end the book's first chapter: "... a sentiment that I confess I savor on a daily basis: Books are not Life, But then what is?"
Wonderful reading, as always.......2003-07-07
Reading Basbanes is like engaging in a long, relaxed conversation over coffee in your living room with a very knowledgeable friend. In this third volume of his slightly rambling but always fascinating and well-informed discussions of books, book collectors, booksellers and dealers, and all the periperal subjects they engender, he combines advice on bibliophily in the age of the Internet with reminiscence on how collecting used to be done, and what the old and the new still have in common. As a small-time collector of limited resources myself, I enjoy reading abut the fabulous collections built up by those who not only have money to spend but also the intelligence and passion to add value to what they hunt down and acquire by adding to the accretion of knowledge. In fact, as Basbanes makes clear, becoming personally involved with books and other "stuff" is what separates collectors from mere accumulators. In fact, I find I have also become a collector of Nick Basbanes. . . .

Cure for cancer? End to world hunger? What's left to do after the publication of Felice Newman's definitive guide to lesbian sex? Drawing on a wide range of published sources as well as her own notoriously graphic questionnaire circulated by e-mail--stunning mild-mannered office workers as it reeled across their computer screens--Newman has compiled an exhaustively thorough how-to guide for practices as exotic as play piercings and as pedestrian as oral sex. Along the way, she offers a primer in sexual politics and lesbian manners at the turn of the century. The S/M hanky code is laid out once and for all. There is even a (brief, happily brief) section on celibacy.
Highlights include descriptions of sex writer Tristan Taormino's private consultation with Betty Dodson, the author of Sex for One described as "the mother of masturbation": "I was so excited about this adventure that I nearly peed in my pants," recalled Taormino, "I was going to touch myself for Dr. Betty Dodson!" (In the end, Newman reports, "Tristan earned an A+ in pelvic thrusting, but got a big 'needs improvement' in the breathing department.") Although it sometimes skimps on the details, especially with regard to women's health, The Whole Lesbian Sex Book is so rich, inclusive, and authoritative that it invites challenge. Now inventive lovers can ask each other: "Is it in Whole Lesbian?" --Regina Marler
Book Description
The Whole Lesbian Sex Book was the first-ever sex guide to offer information and encouragement for all women who desire women — lesbian, bisexual, butch, femme, androgynous, and transgender. First published in 1999, it has been lauded for its thoroughness, enthusiastic tone, and creative, nonjudgmental approach to lesbian sex in all its rich variety. Now, five years later, sex educator Felice Newman has completely updated this classic guide. There is new information throughout, up-to-date research, fresh quotes from women who share their personal experiences, a greatly expanded resource guide, new illustrations, and an entire new chapter on sex and partnership.

This was an excellent book. It was well researched, factual, more so than my anatomy class for nursing school. The book discusses all aspects of sexual pleasure with an open accepting point of view. This would be an excellent read for anyone wanting to achieve more pleasure and openness discussing sex with their partner.
Book for both.......2007-02-21
I enjoyed this book, it was both interesting and enlightening. I shared this with my partner and it helped us both with giving us more of an understanding into certain aspects in our life. Good book, not only for women but for men as well to get a bit more of an understanding of women and where there coming from..

There's a reason why Cybil Shepard's character, newly out as a lesbian, is so excited about this book. It's comprehensive, clearly written, and literally contains everything you need or want to know, but may not even have known enough to ask about lesbian sex. Wish this had been available when I came out years ago. Disclaimer: The author, Felice Newman, is known to me -- as a somatic coach and sex educator, who saved our 20 plus yr relationship from LBD (lesbian bed death). As her clients and her readers, we can't say enough about how much she's done for lesbians everywhere and the two of us in particular.
