        Book Description

This book provides an introduction to the analysis of chaos and chaos theory as it relates to agricultural science. With clear explanations of chaos theory and principles, the first part of the book offers some basic facts, the fundamental terminology, and the concepts of deterministic chaos.

The second part of this volume contains rich applications of the theory as applied to real agricultural systems. Applications include a wide area such as alternate bearing in tree crops, weed control and tillage, nonlinear vibrations in agricultural tractors, and piglet pricing analysis.

Readers will find useful tools for calculating the order, rules and theory behind complex phenomena observed in arable land.

Although methods and techniques that will help solve various analytical problems do exist, they are often difficult to perform. Using polarized light microscopy as the method of choice, Color Atlas and Manual of Microscopy for Criminalists, Chemists, and Conservators offers swift, simple, yet irrefutable analytical tests and testing procedures that can be used to identify organic and inorganic particles. Seasoned forensic microscopists Nicholas Petraco and Thomas Kubic have lent their expertise as consultants to forensic scientists, analytical chemists, art historians, pathologists, customs agents, detectives, gemologists, numismatists, and art conservators. Now they share their extensive photomicrograph collection of minute specimens along with clear, concise, and simple methods to help solve your analytical problems.

the detractions are numerous. For instance, there
is an over abundant usage of acronyms. Secondly, many
chapters are too few pages and followed by splattering
of references. This reader believes the authors are
displaying their bookshelf in the reference sections.
Thirdly, there are many redundant images and charts.
Fourthly, many of the schematics are unprofessional

graphics, as if drawn in MSPaint. Fifthly, the figures
on common minerals and their crystal systems confuses
the reader/viewer with their morphology. There are some
technical errors, such as stating that "fiber glass" is
made from "silicone dioxide" and it is a "natural" polymer.
"Silicone".....really! Finally, I shall be sure to purchase
                        "melt mount".

I teach sixth and seventh grade students. While I've known that these kinds of concrete, multi-level activities would be helpful to them, the logistics always left me defeated--and I'd never have all of my letter tiles returned at the end of a lesson. This book solved my word-making problems, however! Each list corresponds with a strip of reproducible letter tiles in the back. Hand out a new strip for each lesson, and let the kids keep them when they're done. The activities truly are multi-level and interesting even to above grade-level learners. If you're a middle level teacher who wants to increase the word knowledge of your students, this book is a wonderful resource. Now, if I can just keep my colleagues from stealing it...

I have been using this in my classroom this year and have seen results. This is a must for all elementary teachers!

This book gives an excellent insight into using some of the patters described in the classic book Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software (Addison-Wesley Professional Computing Series). It explains the reasons why particular patterns are useful and how they can be implemented to solve real-world problems.

5 out of 5 stars Truly a new perspective on an old topic .......2007-10-09

IMHO, if you ever wanted to understand Design Patterns and most of the basic OO concepts way much better than you do now, then this is the book. It is well written, easy to read, and the authors convey the information very well. They even stick to the same real-world examples throughout the book while explaining the various concepts and patterns. This book treats the GoF Design Patterns book like the catalog that it should be with lots of references into it.

I randomly decided to bring it along on my recent business trip. I found the book engaging and have studied (not just scanned) almost half of it now. I found it to answer so many questions I had about OO all these years. It provides a strong foundation into thinking about design, OO, and patterns. I highly recommend it. The book's subtitle states, "A new perspective on OO design" and I totally agree with the authors. So far I have covered the Adaptor, Façade, Bridge, and Strategy patterns. They are highly useful and very powerful patterns that allow for easy communication among the designers, the implementers, and the unit testers.

For experienced software engineers, you may find this just a concise repackaging of what you already know and have learned. But you too may still find some new golden nuggets here and there within these pages. Plus, I believe you may find this new perspective enlightening as to why you use design patterns not just how or the pattern as a cookie cutter.

To address all the other prior reviews (especially those with low ratings), this book is in fact a new perspective. If you miss that point then this book will look like just another rehash of the topic of design patterns. But if you really study it and look for and understand this new perspective, you will find it very useful. The authors are trying to have you see design patterns as much more than just a common diagram. It is a better way to conceive of designs and communicate them, with much more understanding behind them. Design patterns are like any other tool; you may understand what a hammer and nail is for, but you may not know all the proper techniques in using a hammer and nail, and therefore your final product will be reasonable but not the best. This book goes a long way to achieving the best.

5 out of 5 stars should be called "Design Explained".......2007-07-14

This book is great. It goes way beyond patterns. It starts with what design patterns are and the main principles behind them (coupling, cohesion, testability, ...). It does this in an interesting manner. We first solve a problem in the way we most likely would. The book then takes us through patterns and shows us a couple of better solutions using patterns and other techniques discussed in the book that are consistent with patterns.

The book also discusses the motivations of the GoF patterns - they manage variation in our problem domain. Variations in our problem domain (i.e., changes) is what makes our life as programmers difficult.

Then the killer- the authors talk about two techniques they use (one in analysis - the analysis matrix; and one in design - commonality - variability analysis) which are awesome. These techniques go way beyond patterns but relate to patterns which is why I guess they are in this book and not in a general design book (which is where they could very well be).

What's also interesting is throughout the book they talk about how patterns relate to eXtreme Programming which gives insights into both.

                                    A must buy!

5 out of 5 stars Recommended for anyone new to patterns.......2007-01-18

Although usable as a reference, this book has immense value to anyone new to patterns willing to give a cover to cover read. This book is a great complement to the original Gang Of Four book (which is in need of some touching up). The authors try to offer some insight into places where GOF was lacking. The sections on modular decomposition and principles of applying patterns provide a gateway into the world of effectively applying patterns in your projects.

Finally, I appreciate the authors' use of a uniform case study throughout the book to solidify the intent of a pattern through useful application.

5 out of 5 stars Best introduction to patterns by far!!.......2006-11-27

Whilst the 'GoF Book'(Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software) is the bible of patterns, this is undoubtably the Magna Carta of patterns. It should rather be called 'Design Patterns for mere mortals'.

I found this book a true pleasure to read, and recommend it above the original GOF book. It really makes patterns incredibly easy to understand and apply in the right context, instead of just blindly using them because they are the next cool thing in Software Engineering.

Whilst the 'GoF book' is still a vital book, it is more of reference than something that should be read cover-to-cover. Buy this book first, and then get the 'GoF Book', once you have read this book.

This book has had a lasting positive influence on the way that I approach software design. What I liked most about the book is the way that it uses a single software design example that evolves as the requirements change. Each design pattern is introduced in context as a better solution to a problem than the original design. What may be even more valuable in the long run is that the authors distill commonalities among the patterns into several heuristics for software design: find what varies and encapsulate it, favor composition over inheritance, design your objects to be entities with well-designed responsibilities instead of just "smart data", etc. The heuristics that I mentioned may seem like empty phrases, or if you're experienced enough, common sense, but by the end of the book you will be able to visualize exactly what those phrases mean in practice and visualize the architecture of a design that conforms to the principles.

The book's strength can also be its weakness, depending on your point of view. Since it endeavors to SHOW the reader how design patterns are encountered in practice instead of to simply TELL the reader about them, at least one developer that I know feels that the book is somewhat repetitive and not enough "to the point". The book may not be for you if you prefer terse technical documentation. Also, you should know that not all of the GoF patterns are discussed. With those criticisms in mind, I'd like to point out in response to previous reviewer JavaIreland that if you DO find yourself coming back to this book, I believe that it has failed in its mission. I do not refer regularly to the book, but that is because the book did such a good job of teaching me the principles underlying design patterns that I rarely need to refer to the specific patterns.

After having purchased and read over a half dozen design patterns books, I'd have to say that (besides the original gof), this is the best of the bunch. It always helps to get more than one perspective on a topic, so if you're into patterns, get the original gof, and this one.

I like the way this book teaches the bridge pattern. I liked the first edition as a stop-gap. I had anticipated that the second edition would beef the book up in several areas - it didn't. My main problem with this book is that it doesn't stand the test of time. I do not find myself coming back to it.

I've been coding for 10 years. I only use object oriented languages (C++, Java or C#). I have read the classic Design Patterns by Erich Gamma etc.. It is a wonderful reference and primer for design patters. However, Design Patterns Explained takes the foundation laid by Gamma and show you how to practically apply it to code. The keyword I would give this book is practical. The ideas presented revolutionized the way I code. Everytime I find myself copy and pasting logic I think back to what this book taught me and I find a way to abstract/generalize the logic so that I only have one copy of it. This pays tremendous dividends in development time and maintanance. Now that Java and C# are adding templates I will be able to do even more.

My only caveat is that this book is not for beginners. If you don't know how to program or you haven't programmed for long this book will fly right over your head.
