Book Description
This major book provides an up-to-date and state-of-the-art overview of the contemporary theory and practice of the most central concept in political science: power. The concept of political power is introduced within a three-part framework: contemporary theories of power; applications of power processes and practices; and the implications of modern power flows across the globe today. The book explores the many structures of power in the contemporary world from theories of its construction and use, to its operation in policy networks, and its wider exercise at different levels in the political process, from the local to the global. Amongst the many themes explored are the reproduction and the legitimization of power, the dynamics of resistance and coercion, the concepts of private and public power, and the impact of globalization processes and subsequent shifting power arrangements. Combining diverse perspectives and different tools of analysis, this book represents the most comprehensive treatment of political power published in the last fifteen years. It will be essential reading for academics and students alike across political science, international studies and political sociology.

Book Description
This book brings together the themes of gender, sexuality, violence and organizations. The authors synthesize the literature and research which has been done in these fields and provide a coherent framework for understanding the inter-relationship between these concepts. The importance of violence and abuse, and particularly men's violence to women, children and other men has been well established, especially through feminist and some pro-feminist research. The insights of this scholarship have rarely been applied to organizational analysis. The authors draw on this literature and their own research, as well as relevant literatures on safety and risk at work; anxiety and stress at work; organizational policies on violence; sexual harassment and bullying in organizations; and male sexuality, to provide valuable information on violence in and around organizations. Violations in Organizations breaks new ground in organization studies and will be essential reading for academics and students in both organization studies and all those studying issues of gender and sexuality in organizations.

Book Description
During the 1970s and 1980s, mutation breeding made a tremendous contribution to crop improvement. Now, as the techniques of molecular biology become more widely adopted by plant breeders, this comprehensive summary sets mutation breeding in a contemporary context and relates it to other breeding techniques, including the most recently developed. The book opens with a general introduction to plant breeding and a review of the development of mutation breeding, including consideration of the strengths and weaknesses of the technique. Chapters covering the underlying theory are followed by sections that consider more practical aspects such as in vitro techniques, techniques used for seed propagated crops and techniques used for vegetatively propagated crops. Case studies and examples are included throughout and a list of over 1200 references provides a valuable resource for those new to the field.

Customer Reviews:
informative, well-written, wonderful look into AIDS.......2006-05-10
i used this book as my textbook for my Understanding AIDS class, a pre-requisite for the degree i'm pursuing in college.
this book is well-written, in plain terms. it gives you more then the cold, hard facts. personal stories, emotions, and the author's take on issues concerning being HIV+ and living with AIDS.
this book isn't dry at all, rather a book that really helps you think about how you can make a difference, and how to give respect and dignity to those who are living with AIDS or HIV.

Book Description
Respiration represents the major area of ignorance in our understanding of the global carbon cycle. In spite of its obvious ecological and biogeochemical importance, most oceanographic and limnological textbooks invariably deal with respiration only superficially and as an extension of production and other processes. The objective of this book is to fill this gap and to provide the first comprehensive review of respiration in the major aquatic systems of the biosphere. The introductory chapters review the general importance of respiration in aquatic systems, and deal with respiration within four key biological components of aquatic systems: bacteria, algae, heterotrophic protists, and zooplankton. The aim of this first part is to provide the backbone for the analysis and interpretation of ecosystem-level respiration in a variety of aquatic environments. The central chapters of the book review respiration in major aquatic ecosystems including freshwater wetlands, lakes and rivers, estuaries, coastal and open ocean and pelagic ecosystems, as well as respiration in suboxic environments. For each major ecosystem, the corresponding chapter provides a synthesis of methods used to assess respiration, outlines the existing information and data on respiration, discusses its regulation and link to biotic and abiotic factors, and finally provides regional and global estimates of the magnitude of respiration. The final chapter provides a general synthesis of the information and data provided in the different sections, and further attempts to place aquatic respiration within the context of the global carbon budget.

Description:
Food chain and food web have been, thus far, depicted by number of individuals, matter (biomass) and energy, but not by the concept concerning to the second law of thermodynamics. The present paper takes up three U.S. mid-Atlantic estuaries and delineates marine trophic structure in the term of the concept of this missing link: the second law of thermodynamics. Homeostatic structure and function of living systems is maintained by chemical, physical and organic activities in biotic systems. These activities are supported by chemical energy released by decomposition of macromolecules in organisms by oxygen incorporated from the outside (respiration). This chemical energy finally becomes heat energy and is discarded to the outside. This heat energy is dissipation function in thermodynamics, and dissipation function divided by absolute temperature of organism-water is entropy production. As example, mid-Atlantic estuaries on the eastern U.S. coast are analyzed, based on the study of (Monaco, M.E., Ulanowicz, R.E., 1997. Comparative ecosystem trophic structure of three U.S. mid-Atlantic estuaries. Mar. Ecol. Prog. Ser. 161, 239-254). They give 13-14 trophic compartments in each estuaries, and respiration and other characteristic quantities for each trophic compartments. Trophic position of compartment in each estuary is adopted and arranged in accord to the food web diagrams of (Monaco, M.E., Ulanowicz, R.E., 1997. Comparative ecosystem trophic structure of three U.S. mid-Atlantic estuaries. Mar. Ecol. Prog. Ser. 161, 239-254). Plots of trophic number versus respiration become of half-pyramid shape, which is also applied to dissipation function because respiration is equal to dissipation function in thermodynamics. Annual average temperature at average depth in Narragansett estuary is, for example, 10.0^oC (=283.2K). The difference between maximum and minimum temperature at averaged depth is 14.2^oC (=287.4K). This difference is small compared with the absolute temperature scale. Hence let us make an approximation that the temperature of the water body of this estuary is about constant and uniform over a year and 10.0^oC=283.2K. Entropy production is obtained by dividing dissipation function by this value. Pattern of trophic position versus entropy production multiplied by the temperature is of similar shape to dissipation function: half-pyramid. Other two estuaries show similar results.

The kind a book that you can read several times.......2005-12-10
No matter how much time you spend on your swing, you are not going to go far if you don't work in your mind.
I would recommend this book to traders who like Golf, due to the fact that there are many similarities between the mental attitude required for Golf and Trading.
alanb.......2001-09-05
Golf requires you to think and Be the Ball makes you think about thinking. I loved reading the comments from playing pros such as such as Lee Trevino, Arnold Palmer, Greg Norman, Gary McCord and Nancy Lopez and teaching pros such as Butch Harmon, Wally Goodwin, Pat Gross and Stan Thirsk. It is a book that I keep going back to time and time again.
part reference/part fun.......2001-02-10
Almost everyone I love plays golf. My parents, my brothers and my husband. My children are learning. We have many golf books around our house, and this is the first one I have ever read cover to cover. It is filled with great tips and stories. I may even dust off the set of clubs I got 10 years ago and take another swing at it. My husband says this book has changed his life!

A must have for any ASL Student.......2007-05-16
This book is very easy to use. All the photographs are large and easy to understand. I am actually taking ASL from Irene Duke at Massasoit Community College in Brockton, MA and she and her deaf son have told us about the problems she had to go through to communicate and how glad she is to have written this book. This book has taught me so much a must have!!!!
A Good Introduction.......2007-03-01
As a beginner student of ASL, this is one of the text books used in my course. I can understand the previous comment that certain signs can be mistaken for totally unrelated signs (i.e. the sign for work) - but understand, many, many signs are very close to those with unrelated meanings. It's hand position and "inflection" (body language and facial expression) that is paramount. Regional differences also come into play, and this is where your instructor will be an invaluable part of your learning experience.
Enrolling in a course, or finding private instruction is an important and necessary resource when learning this awesome language.
The information about, history of, and introduction to Deaf culture is basic, but gives one an introduction nonetheless.
Understanding the bare basics of sign etiquette, including hand position, eye contact, body language and facial expression is very important in order to move on to meaningful conversation. ASL is not just hand signals!
That being said - I find this book to be a very easy and logical step by step way to build a solid foundation in ASL.
By the fourth and fifth chapters, you are signing basic yet meaningful and commonly used signs.
Overall, I find this book a very good choice for my intro to ASL.
The information is presented in an easy to understand and easy to execute manner.
There is no substitute for actual visual instruction, however, even without being enrolled in classroom study I feel this book is well worth buying for anyone interested in the basics of Deaf culture, the history of the language and building a solid foundation on which to expand on should you decide that ASL is something you want to pursue.
It is my opinion that knowledge of the above is of monumental importance when learning this beautiful visual language.
Although this book only covers the basics, it does so in a manner in which sets you up for further understanding as you move through your learning experience.
A good introduction to ASL with the much needed background foundation.
I've moved quickly and successfully through the chapters building my vocabulary, understanding ASL grammar and retaining many commonly used conversational signs.
Has major errors and lacks attention to details.......2005-03-12
I happened to see this book while looking at a bookstore, and was attracted to it by the cover and its claims. I have taken some classes in ASL and was looking for a good book both for a review of ASL, to learn about the culture, and for my girlfriend to use to learn ASL.
I noted that this book was written by a hearing parent of a deaf child. The best books about the Deaf are written by the Deaf, there is no substitution for first-hand experience.
Looking throught the book, I encountered the sign for "work". It is incorrectly shown in the book. And worse than that, the picture for "work" is instead an obscenity, or very close to one. Turning a few pages, I see that the picture for the sign "excuse me" is instead the one for the sign "nice, clean".
In general the attention to important details seemed lacking in this book and I cannot recommend it. Look elsewhere for better books on ASL.
If you're looking for a similar book that has signs, correctly represented, and discusses Deaf history, culture, grammar, and more, consider the book "Alpha Teach Yourself American Sign Language" by Trudy Suggs, ISBN 1592571301. Costs slightly more but is a fascinating read for anyone interested in ASL and Deaf culture. Read the reviews on it...
(I have no connection to Ms Suggs or the publisher.)
