Book Description
The realities of global economic integration are far more complex than many of its supporters or detractors acknowledge. One consequence of simplistic thinking about globalization, claims Robert Paehlke, is that we tend to focus on economic prosperity to the neglect of such other important considerations as environmental and social well-being. A first step toward righting this imbalance is the recognition that economic gains do not guarantee better lives or better communities and societies.
Democratic societies face a dilemma. Global economic integration produces a need for global political integration. Without it, national, state, and local governments are under pressure to forego environmental protection and social programs in order to be competitive. At the same time, global governance presents problems because of its scale and its inaccessibility to citizens. This book describes the consequences of this dilemma -- such as political cynicism and lack of democratic participation -- and proposes ways of dealing with it.
Paehlke seeks a middle ground between those who reject globalization and those who claim that it will create the best of all possible worlds. Because there is no returning to a world that is less economically, culturally, and politically integrated, he argues, we should make every effort to advance global cooperation and equity. He suggests specific interventions that could be built into international trade agreements, including global minimum wages and provisos that natural commodities from developing economies such as energy and forest cuttings not be allowed to decline in price relative to the manufactured goods of more advanced economies. He also suggests ways to improve domestic democratic effectiveness.

Book Description
The third edition of this successful textbook looks again at the influence of natural selection on behavior - an animal's struggle to survive by exploiting resources, avoiding predators, and maximizing reproductive success. However, in this edition, new examples are introduced throughout, many illustrated with full colour photographs. In addition, important new topics are added including the latest techniques of comparative analysis; the theory and application of DNA fingerprinting techniques; extensive new discussion on brood parasite / host coevolution; the latest ideas on sexual selection in relation to disease resistance; and a new section on the intentionality of communication. Written in the lucid style for which these two authors are renowned, the text is aided by boxed sections illustrating important concepts and new marginal notes which guide the reader through the text. This book will be essential reading for students taking courses in behavioural ecology.
Customer Reviews:
A stimulating insight in animal (and human) behaviour.......2000-08-18
A well balanced, unique mix of ethology and sociobiology, with strong emphasis on the biologic and evolutionary sides of behaviour. It is concise but is easy reading. A must have, for those seriously interested in the field.
Book Description
A fully revised and updated introduction to the subject of animal behavior is provided in this latest edition of an acclaimed text, distinguished by its broad biological approach, linking physiology, ethology, and comparative psychology.

Poor Editing.......2007-06-15
It is time for Ted Andrews to take his share of responsibility for the poor quality of book produced by Dragonhawk Publishing (which I suspect is his own label). This book is so poorly edited that information at times becomes incomprehensible and/or inaccurate. His Animal Wise Tarot suffered from the same problem. This is an insult to readers. I respect the author's knowledge but will never buy another copy of any book he publishes under Dragonhawk; readers work hard for their money and deserve more respect than what Mr. Andrews is showing. How spiritually correct is that?
Very Informative Book!.......2007-05-09
This book has alot of very useful information. I'm sure I will be using it as a reference book for a long while.
A great work.......2007-04-15
I really really liked this book. It was relatively aimed at Wiccans and Pagans, but it had very nice information, both of a spiritual nature, and scientifically so, about all sorts of herbs, flowers, and trees. Some of the exercises seemed a little weird to me, but to each his own- someone might really benefit from these. I see the outdoors as an even more beautiful place after reading this book. Its definately worth buying!
Finding Spiritual in Everyday Life.......2007-01-03
After reading this book, you will not look at the world the same. Andrews points out simple ways to find the Divine in the everyday. A simple walk outside in your yard can be an act of worship!
Everything you could ask about Nature's symbolism (to you).......2006-02-27
I was on vacation in NW Canada Rockies area and discovered this book in a little shop, and I couldn't leave the country without it (just in case I couldn't find it quick enough in the US). It's beyond "plants" you ID with. There's ceremonies (like making a staff -- or celebrating Solstice etc), a dictionary of landscapes (why are you drawn to oceans), magical rhythms (like seasons, angels, etc) ... even the meaning of numbers in nature (why did you plant two birches?) And of course the expected definition of plants, trees, flowers, etc. (Marigold: "keynote: words have healing power; sacrifice out of love if necessary." "It is a flower of love and sacrifice")
Book Description
This book is a sequel to Wolfe Lowenthal’s first book: There Are No Secrets. Like the previous book, it is about his teacher, the great Cheng Man-ch’ing, the art of Tai Chi Chuan, and his experience as a student and teacher.

Pieces of Gold, interspersed with Psychological Angst.......2004-06-03
Pieces of Gold, interspersed with Lowenthal's Psychological Angst
All of the preceding reviewers points of view are mostly true, this book has some great gems and insights into Professor Cheng Man-ch'ings Mastery of Tai Chi. Unfortunatly much of the book is like wading through a "bad" Woody Allen movie, full of Upper middle class, eastern U.S., psycho-babble and Angst.
Lowenthal would have written a much much better book if he had stayed with Tai Chi Chuan and left his tortured/guilt ridden pysche & memories out of the book. What Lowental's memories of Professor add to the text, his personal commentaries about his own past, psychological "insights" etc. take away.
If I had a very limited amount of money to spend, and I wanted to maximize my reading on Tai Chi, I would go for those books written by Prof Cheng, like His Thirteen Treatises, or the Essence of Tai Chi by Lo/Inn and save Lowenthal's books for when I am interested in much lighter fare.
More Great Tai Chi Information From Lowenthal.......2002-01-26
The style is very similar to "There Are No Secrets" - it is equally entertaining and informative. There is some repetition from the first book, but in my opinion his first book contains so much information that it is nearly impossible to digest it all. I think it is helpful to hear a few of the same ideas rephrased or put in a different context.
The chapters on Tai Chi fencing were very interesting and original. You also learn more about Lowenthal's life during his Tai Chi training days and meet some of the other characters he trains with. His attempt to honestly portray both himself and the professor really makes Tai Chi feel like an art that should practiced by ordinary people and not just monks on some mountain.
The pictures are nice too!
Glimpses of an epic tai chi journey.......1999-05-05
Wolfe Lowenthals training under the famous Cheng Man-ching is to be envied for its depth and duration . He spent hours everyday for seven years seeking to plumb the depths of Cheng's Taichi, to inquire deeply within himself and of his teacher to try and exemplify its essence, in boxing as well as life. Lowenthal continues to grapple with the paradoxes of push hands obeying Master Cheng's instructions to the letter: "never use more than 4 ounces" Through tireless effort he achieves skill.
Excellent discussion of author's development in tai chi.......1998-12-12
This book is related to, but should not be considered a sequel to the author's book, "There Are No Secrets," about his studies with Chen Man Ching. It is, however, an excellent discussion of how the author incorporated his tai chi studies into his life and thoughts, and his growth as a martial artist. I recommend it highly as a companion to his earlier book.

Clear and Concise.......2007-05-07
This Signed English Dictionary is great for people who are just learning sign. Pictures are clear and the book is alphabetized like a regular dictionary so words are easily found.
For Signed Engligh, Great! For ASL, No Go!.......2003-09-01
Obviously, by the title of this book, you are aware that this is Signed English and not American Sign Language (ASL). What you may not be aware of though is that deaf adults do not use Signed English. If you are learning for a child, this is an awesome book! It is filled to the hilt with clear illustrations and well worth the asking price.
But if you've decided to learn the real *language* of Sign, DON'T get this book. Again, deaf adults don't use it. Many signs are similar, but MANY are not used at all in ASL. This is strictly an English-based book -- not something a serious student who wants to speak with adults in Sign would use.
It all depends on why you're learning and who you're planning on conversing with. Children in elementary school? Get this book. You won't be disappointed. Anyone else? Click on the back arrow key and continue your search. That's just this deafie's opinion. :v)
I am hearing and I love this book !.......2000-12-22
I own several different books on sign language. This is worth the money. I am learning sign because I like it, my friend has 2 deaf children, I am a sub- teacher for a Para for a boy who is non-verbal, I am teaching my children for homeschool, and I want to be able to witness to deaf people. This is in ABC order and seems easier to use than the other books I have that are not. But I am hearing and this is probably why I like it better. I am looking for my friend the signs for the names of all the states.
This is the Book!.......2000-08-01
My son is currently nine and is nonverbal. Further, the chances that he will become verbal are very slim indeed. When I purchased this book, it was recommended by his speech teacher. I first thought it was a book teaching me "A, B, C" etc. In fact, signed English allows you to speak in words instead of letters. My son will never get letters but he certainly relates to words. This book has a basic vocabluary but still is quite thick. The number of words is amazing and very useful. We use the book daily and my son's vocabulary has increased dramatically since we began using it. I have read the other reviews stating the alphabetizing is a problem but I can't think of a more practical way to organize such a book. Regardless, this is the book for those wanting to speak to a nonverbal person. Additionally, our son is developmentally delayed but he still is able to communicate with us thanks to this book. Those of you with nonverbal children will think you've discovered gold if you haven't been able to communicate in the past.
