Customer Reviews:
A must read even if you're not an educator!.......2007-10-05
Nelly Stromquist gets across excellent information and concerns about education in a globalized world, and it's really not what you think it is - there's so much more to it than our perceptions from the media, our workplace, etc. She brings to light many points that we need to be aware of, particularly if in education. If you are going to read books like, "The World is Flat" by Tom Friedman, you must read this one too. Read this even if you aren't going to read "The World is Flat" - which may be a bestseller but does not shed light on the things this book reveals! You may think that the two might not be related, but they are in a "globalized" sort of way. This book deals with a lot of information but is written so that it is not all in academic jargon, but rather understandable for the general population instead of just those studying in advanced-degree programs.

Book Description
Forest management is a complex process that now incorporates information obtained from many sources. It is increasingly obvious that the physiological status of the trees in a forest has a dramatic impact on the likely success of any particular management strategy. Indeed, models described in this book that deal with forest productivity and sustainability require physiological information. This information can only be obtained from an understanding of the basic biological mechanisms and processes that contribute to individual tree growth.
This valuable book illustrates that physiological ecology is a fundamental element of proficient forest management.
* Provides essential information relevant to the continuing debate over sustainable forest management
* Outlines how modern tools for physiological ecology can be used in planning and managing forest ecosystems
* Reviews the most commonly used forest models and assesses their value and future
Book Description
Genome sequences are now available that enable us to determine the biological components that make up a cell or an organism. The new discipline of systems biology examines how these components interact and form networks, and how the networks generate whole cell functions corresponding to observable phenotypes. This textbook describes how to model networks, determine their properties, and relate these to phenotypic functions. Some knowledge of linear algebra and biochemistry is required, since the book reflects the irreversible trend of increasing mathematical content in biology education.
Customer Reviews:
A great review of network reconstructions.......2006-06-03
While this may not be an all encompassing review of what systems biology is, it provides an insightful view on network reconstruction. I've found this book very helpful and well written (being a first edition, it does have a few typos, but this is normal). It has a very logical flow, but it is written on the level of a professional or graduate student interested in entering the field of systems biology.

A search for the Pacific Northwest's fabled Bigfoot provides a jumping-off point for nature writer Robert Michael Pyle's lyrical ruminations on wilderness, isolation, and the occasional triumphs of mystery over so-called progress. Pyle's well-researched stomping ground is Washington State's Dark Divide in the Cascade Mountains--this rugged country of loggers and recreationists has been the scene for many sightings of the elusive man-beast. Pyle's route alternates between desolate clear-cuts and majestic ancient forests, between the inroads of civilization and the dark recesses of the wild. But never does the author get too caught up in proving anything to himself or the reader; this search for Bigfoot has as much to do with locating the wild nature within each of us as it does with finding a legend.
Book Description
Robert Michael Pyle trekked into the Dark Divide, where he discovered a giant fossil footprint; searched out Indians who told him of an outcast tribe that had not fully evolved into humans; and attended the convocation in British Columbia called Sasquatch Daze, where he realized that "these guys don't want to find Bigfoot-they want to be Bigfoot." Ultimately Pyle discovers a few things about Bigfoot - and a lot about the human need for something to believe in and the need for wilderness in our lives.
Customer Reviews:
Dissapointing.......2005-09-10
I thought this book was about bigfoot. It is not. What little that is written about bigfoot is just a rehashing of much told events.
Occasionally there was some interesting areas such as the author relating his meetings throughout his travels with a diverse group of people. The dialouge between himself and them was often interesting. But there is little of that. Most of it is his own feelings and musings about nature. Often these musings will go on for pages about such mundane subjects as moths. And at times the author does get a bit kooky, like when he talks about walking naked through the forests.
At times his writing is good though. (Hence the 2 stars) The nature of the subject matter was just too boring and hippyish to hold my interest throughout.
Rich, rewarding work from talented writer.......2004-10-30
Face it, if you are looking for a book "about" Bigfoot, it is necessarily going to be slim. With no definitive proof that Bigfoot exists - no data to analyze, no pictures, no fossils, no bodies - the basic gist of purportedly "scientific" Bigfoot books boils down to a lot of speculating about second hand information. Interesting perhaps, but never convincing. You either believe or you don't. (And to be clear, I am a believer.)
On the other hand, a book about what it is in man - and his relationship to wilderness - that gives rise to the Bigfoot legend is far more compelling. Where Bigfoot Walks is just such a book. Beautifully written and engaging, the book uses the search for Bigfoot as a metaphor to characterize the endless search for meaning that occurs inside our own souls. Rooted in the holiest of wilderness areas, the Gifford Pinchot (luckily for me a stone's throw from Portland), Mr. Pyle takes an amazing journey into the heart of nature and emerges with a lesson for us all: man simultaneously is sustained by and seeks to tame, the solitude and endless potentials inherent in wilderness.
That the author fails to offer definitive proof of Bigfoot is of little consequence. His book stands as a testament to the power of the journey, no matter what destination is sought. It is also a glorious ode to the natural world. Bigfoot believers and nonbelievers alike should read this book. It won't convince skeptics, but it will frame the quest, quite elegantly, in a language accessible to all.
Where Bigfoot Walks.......2004-08-02
Intersting book, the book keeps you thinking, Rober Michael Pyle makes you feel that you are on the Journey with him. A big plus for this book.++++++++++++ Eric J. MAzzi Pa
Beware the title.......2004-02-11
I'll make this brief, for the people interested in bigfoot/sasquatch, forget all about this book. Now the good point... for the people that enjoy a well written book on a long nature walk, you'll eat this up. Pile is very detailed in his descriptions of nature and you should really enjoy this book. Bigfoot followers... not so much.
Excellent writing, but doesn't live up to the hype........2001-08-07
As somewhat of a skeptic, but still keeping an open mind, I enjoy topics such a `bigfoot' when they're written intelligently and with a base of reason. As for "Where Bigfoot Walks", I should've looked at other reviews of this book a bit more, but when Midwest book review stated things like "...fascinating study of Bigfoot legends and realities..." I gambled- and lost. For outdoor enthusiasts, this is a rich story of a man's travels through the wilderness. And I must hand it to Mr. Pyle, he really does write well. It almost seems as if he anticipated readers interested in bigfoot to get bored with it quickly, like when he goes on about hitching rides from Indians because he runs out of water- or something like that, but his timing is right and just as you're about to toss the book aside he throws in something interesting enough to get you to keep reading. In the end though, it's all rather anticlimactic, and not what I was looking for.

Customer Reviews:
this book is worthless.......2005-09-20
The first 86 pages do nothing but tell you why you should swim. If you didn't want to swim why would you have the book to begin with? I am starting triathlons and the only reason I want to swim is to get to T1. After a few moderately useful pages explaining the basic strokes (which you can find better descriptions and pictures on the web) the rest is MORE WORTHLESS FILLER. "How swimming improves your sex life"? Common, WORTHLESS, WORTHLESS, WORTHLESS.
Little about swimming, a lot about everything else.......2004-03-23
Why are swim book authors so lousy? This one is worse than the Total Immersion book. More pages are devoted to topics around swimming than swimming itself. There are chapters on health, diet, etc. etc. That's not necessarily bad, but I'd rather have a smaller, more focused book just about swim technique. In addition, the author gets carried away with love of his sport, asserting that swimming will lead to a better sex life, longevity, wealth, world peace. Well, many fitness regimes will improve your health. Buy it used and keep your expectations low.
The complete book of the excitement of swimming.......2001-04-15
This book is great for getting started. If your first thought is,"do I really wanna go all the way up to the pool, get in my swimming trunks and jump into the cold wet?", just open this book and you'll already be in the water. Dr. Whitten has so much enthusiasm for the sport, that he could probably even convince a cat to take up swimming. I bet there are better books for competitive swimmers, which have more complete work-outs or are more technical, but this book gives you a bit of everything and it also explains WHY you should take up swimming.
An excellent motivator.......2000-11-11
I really love this book. It's full of great motivational stories and excellently illustrated techniques. I have only two complaints. Whitten, like authors of most books on swimming that I've come across, doesn't address what to do when you've been out of the pool a long time and are struggling to get back. As someone who was very much afraid of the water until I took some excellent classes in my county, it's hard for me to get back into the pool after a long layoff. I really need to revisit basic breathing techniques and overcome some deep-seated fears. I also question some of the studies on body fat and swimming. Not that I question swimming's benefits, but all the studies Whitten quotes have been done on Master's swimmers, a sport that like cycling and running is somewhat self-selective. Most successful Master's swimmers are long, lean body types that move along quickly in the water. I wish someone would do body fat studies on the effects of swimming on the normal, non-athletic physique. Other than that, Whitten has written, in my opinion, an excellent book for most beginner and intermediate swimmers.
Great instructional book for those who taking up swimming.......1999-11-18
As a regular runner, I have often thought of using swimming as a great cross-training exercise but always hesitated because I am a weak, inexperienced swimmer. This book was a wonderful find to give tips on improving each stroke and has a wonderful set of workouts in the back for beginners to improve their skill level. I am now swimming a couple of times every week and consult this book regularly for ideas to improve and inspire.

I think it is a very useful book for Turkish learners........1999-03-04
As teachers of Baskent University Prep school we would like to use this book for our freshmen groups. The only thing is that the book does not have a key or teachers' manual. As nonnative speakers of English we would feel more secure if had a key or teachers' guide.

Simply Felt.......2007-08-18
Great book! I learned alot...it was a great resource for what I was trying to learn about.
Highly reccommend it!
Inspirational - but vague in parts..........2007-07-12
This is a gorgeous book with amazing projects and I found it really inspiring, however, just a warning that i didn't think this was the best book for a beginner. I am not completely new to felting and bought this book in conjunction with one that had really clear instructions, which I cross-referenced with Simply Felt to get a better understanding of what I needed to do. The pics are amazing and definitely inspiring - just make sure you have a good basic knowledge if you are going to rely solely on this book to guide you. Happy felting!
Good, but needs more info on technique.......2007-03-24
I bought this book as part of a kit from a felting supplier. The photos are beautiful, and the projects great. The problem I do have with this book is that there is not enough info on the techniques of actually making the felt. I would like to have gotten more info on troubleshooting, such as what to do when it's thin in spots, laying out the wool, etc. Also, there are NO photos of how to actually lay out the roving or what it should look like before you start wetting it down. There are only hand drawn illustrations. I was hoping for a little more than that from a book that labels itself for beginners.
Overall, though, it's a good book, and well done. I can't wait to try some of the vessels and the slippers.
scrumptious.......2007-03-09
I can't help but purchase books on felting. This is now my favorite. It's instructions are concise and to the point. The projects are colorful, and inviting. The photographs; beautiful eye candy. Anyone interested in creating with wool will find this book a joy.
A great book for fleece to felt use with NO knitting!.......2007-01-07
I looked and looked for a book that would let you felt right from the fleece. This book is pretty simple and lets you just work from fleece with minimal supplies to create felt. Some nice patterns in here too. The containers on the cover are a great pattern and the explanation to create them is one that i did not find on the internet. I specifically purchased this book after seeing some of the silk guaze/ wool felted scarves at a recent craft fair, and I was not disappointed at all! The explanation for how this is done is easy! With some simple household items ( ie. a bar of soap!) you can create some amazing gifts. For those of us who love felt but don't knit that great, and want the quickest and simplest way, this book will make you adept at felting!
