Book Description
In Ecuador, every year since 1990 Indian protestors have brought the country to a standstill; in Mexico, Zapatista indigenous guerillas rose up in arms to protest North American free trade. In Brazil, shamans faced down bulldozers to block World Bank dams, while in Bolivia, peasants attacked U.S. troops for the right to grow coca. These are a few examples of the rise of a transnational human rights movement among the hemisphere’s most isolated and powerless people, Latin American Indians.
This book tells the story of the unexpected impact of the Indian rights movement on world politics, from reforming the United Nations to evicting oil companies. Using a constructivist theoretical approach that synthesizes international relations, social movement theory, ethnic politics, and work on democratic transitions, the author argues that marginalized people have responded to globalization with new, internationalized forms of identity politics that reconstruct power relations.
Based on case studies from Ecuador, Mexico, Brazil, Nicaragua, and Bolivia, this book analyzes the implications of these human rights experiences for all of Latin America’s 40 million indigenous citizens, and the 300 million native people throughout the world. The thematic organization of the book allows the author to trace distinctive dynamics of interstate relations, global markets, and transnational civil society. The book concludes with an analysis of the movement’s impact and policy recommendations.

Represent the Voices from Below.......2004-05-20
Alison Brysk¡¯s detailed account of Indian struggles in Latin America is focused, captivating and highly influential. From a voice of experience and authority on the subject, she provides a concise picture of the social movement-it¡¯s impact and drawbacks-and puts points out some clear pathways to remedy the drawbacks. Perhaps the modern world also has something to learn from the Indians. ¡°What justifies borders? Can we completely control nature? Indian movements bring back to the politics of modernity an expanded sense of time, space, and the sacred, when they speak for all living creatures..¡±

Book Description
It has been claimed that organization theory is in a state of 'crisis'. This book traces the history of the orthodox systems theory paradigm in organization studies from its foundations in positivist sociology, through its theoretical and empirical development under structural-functionalism, to its recent deconstruction by postmodernists. The analysis offers general support for the 'sociology-in-crisis' thesis, but takes issue with one of its main propositions, that paradigms are incommensurable. It is argued that paradigms are porous rather than hermetic phenomena, a fact which has profound implications for the theory building process. Based on language-game philosophy, a dialectical theory is developed to illustrate how seemingly exclusive idioms can be mediated. The enquiry provides a pluri-paradigm method for organizational research, and an epistemological framework for postmodern organizational analysis.

Where is the rest of my book?.......2006-06-02
I wish I did not go through the trouble of ordering from this seller...half of the book is missing!! This seller is misleading with their information in the description of what you are purchasing.
Less than half the book!.......2005-10-08
Be careful! There is nothing in the product description that would alert you to the fact that if you order this "custom core edition" you only get the first 17 chapters.

Life on Earth.......2007-02-18
I thought I was getting the actual book NOT the studyguide. I was completely disapointed in the lack of explanation as to what I was ordering before i ordered it. I want to return the study guide since it is of NO use to me, not even in conjunction with the book, but I lost the reciept so I guess I am stuck with it.
Great intro book!.......2004-08-19
This book is for those wanting an easy reading introduction. Its very informative, well put together and easy to follow with adequate graphics. (I hated the questions at the end of each chapter though, ok lets face it they were easy you just had to really think about them).
I wouldn't recommend for a biology buff but definitely all others!
HARD TO FOLLOW.......2004-07-27
I just finished my biology class with this text book. Over all I was very disappointed in this book. I read each chapter that was assigned to us by the professor and worked my study guides but still came out of the each chapter more confused. With the jargon they put in this text book it doesn't do the student any favors in the layouts you will need to spend time to investigate some of the information on your own to obtain a better understanding of BIOLOGY.
An easy-to-read book that still avoids over-simplification.......1999-03-26
Although Life on Earth is meant to be a textbook, I find it to be an excellent reference book. The design does not force the reader to begin at the first chapter and read sequentially. Terms are explained in clear english, and the glossary is very thorough. Illustrations are well-drawn and fitting, and the layout is easy on the eyes. Also, the chapter summary after each section is invaulable to students. I cannot recommend this book more to anyone who is interested in Biology or needs a reference book about the workings of life on Earth.
easy to understand.......1998-07-10
This book was easy to follow. Unlike a a lot of other books, it does not throw a bunch of terms you dont understand at you.

Out Of Control.......2007-07-22
ISBN 0671663267 - As a penny book, destined for the landfill, I read Out Of Control only because it was there. I didn't have high expectations - I'm not a football fan and never heard of Henderson. It turned out to be better than I expected, but not great, leaving me oddly disappointed.
Henderson, poor kid from a family that is poor in more than one way, finds football. Football will save and destroy him, but he doesn't know that in the beginning. As the first pick of the Cowboys, Henderson expects recognition and applause and when that goes to number 2 - a white guy - Henderson states over and over that it's clearly racism. Then (on page 259) he writes "I knew about black pride but I felt that anyone who claimed that he'd been blocked by racism was just a poor soul himself." This is one of the two worst examples of contradictory storytelling; the other is the downward spiral that drugs takes him on. The covers, front and back, mention how many bad things happened to him because of his drug addiction, but Henderson spends a majority of the book somehow bragging about the drugs - hardly a warning to others. Henderson goes into some detail (not graphic) about orgies, and the number of women he has in bed at one time, all thanks to the drugs. At the same time, the reader is supposed to believe that drugs are bad. The message is somewhat muddied.
In the end Henderson is difficult to like. He seems to take far less responsibility than he should and blames others, the Cowboys in particular, for things that make him sound paranoid. When he is nearly put on waivers, he retires. They try to work it out, but he refuses. Then he discovers that by retiring, he has given control to the Cowboys and says "I am convinced that that's why they set it all up." clearly not "owning" the fact that HE quit, and HE refused to work it out. Like his rants that his signing wasn't celebrated because he's black, his paranoia makes him a remarkably unappealing, unsympathetic character.
I know that the main story is supposed to be the drugs and his recovery from them, but the truth is that little of the book is given to that. The book begins, as it should, in his childhood and covers his pre-NFL years before the Cowboys and drugs come along. The largest portion is about the years of addiction, partying, etc. Henderson makes sure to be clear about his sexual relationship with anyone famous, again giving it a bragging tone. By the time he starts his slide into poverty and unemployment, it seems certain that the only reason he's written the book is to make some money - his career is over, he's lost everything - not to make sure the rest of the world learns from his mistakes. In fact, 7 women in bed with one guy might just be enough incentive to make some guys think drugs sound like a great idea.
By now, Henderson's written another book, In Control. He's spent years talking to others and has given back far more than he was ever given. For that reason alone, I have hope that the second book is better. This one, though, kinda average tabloid-y junk, but right from the horse's mouth.
A GREAT READ.......2006-10-14
THIS IS THE STORY OF THOMAS HENDERSON FORMER NFL PLAYER FOR THE DALLAS COWBOYS. THOMAS TAKES US THROUGH HIS LIFE AS AN NFL STAR TO HIS ADDICTION AND RECOVERY FROM DRUGS AND ALCOHOL. HIS STORY IS TRULY SCARY, BIZARRE, AND TOTALLY RIVOTING. THOMAS LIVED THE HIGH LIFE IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE. HE SPEND MONEY LIKE WATER, HAD TONS OF WOMEN, TONS OF DRUGS AND ALCOHOL. HIS COCAINE BECAME A WAY OF LIFE, FROM THE MOMENT HE AWAKENED EACH DAY, HE WOULD START STUFFING HIS NOSE WITH IT. AT ONE TIME HE WAS USING PAIN KILLERS, COCAINE, MARIJUANA, QUALUDES AND ALCOHOL AND STILL WAS A VERY PRODUCTIVE PLAYER. HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH TOM LANDRY AND HIS FORMER WIFE IMAN, ARE ALSO HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS HARD TO PUT DOWN BOOK. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FOR ALL PEOPLE IN RECOVERY AND ALL FOOTBALL FANS WHO REMEMBER HOLLYWOOD IN HIS FINEST HOURS AS A DALLAS COWBOY. A POWERFUL STORY.
Great Book.......2004-06-08
This book is a must read for any football fan. I shared it with friends and family before losing it and re bought to read again. Just as good 2nd time around.Helped some friends and self deal w/ drugs. Highly recommend.
Ball Four on steroids.......2002-07-22
Henderson's Out of Control is one of the most revealing and honest books I've yet to read that documents the world of big-time NFL football, or any sport for that matter. It packs a heck of a punch by basically chronicling in great detail, the partying and good times that were had by the 1970s Dallas Cowboys. The drugs, booze, women and carousing are all here in abundance. Of course Henderson's athletic life is the focal point, however I found the behind the scenes stuff enthralling and worth the price of the book alone. Much in the tradition of Bouton's Ball Four, Out of Control takes it to another level.
The usefulness of Out of Control is its brutal honesty and fly on the wall glimpse into big time sports. Anyone who's played any level of competitive football will find Out of Control to be a magnificent read you won't be able to put down. I devoured the whole thing in two days. Henderson's assertion of covert racism regarding just who would start at linebacker was also interesting and made for great reading.
The NFL's Public Relations department won't be sponsoring Henderson's book signing tour anytime soon.
The Dark Side of Sports Fame.......2001-11-10
As sports biographies go, this is a very good one. I have some memories of Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson's football days but obviously never knew what was going on behind the scenes. The pattern for his abuses were set young in his life and not necessarily as a result of his fame in the NFL. Hats off to Henderson for not pulling any punches or blaming anyone for his drug problems but himself. He admitted his faults and didn't come off too preachy about his downfalls either. A most enjoyable read if you find a copy of it.

No mention of library databases.......2006-06-27
I saw no mention of databases such as InfoTrac/Gale and EBSCOHost that are extremely important in research these days. These popular online tools are called "aggregated databases" in the APA handbook and "library subscription databases" in the MLA handbook. The omission of this format is unacceptable, in my opinion. I am selecting books on citation styles for my library, and this one will certainly NOT be among the ones I choose!
This is a really good book!.......2005-12-06
This book is an excellent resource for anyone that is unfamiliar with the current APA format. It's loaded with practical applications and is very easy to follow. Highly recommended!

Great Potential, Poor Execution .......2006-09-02
As other reviewers have noted, this book clearly would have benefited from better editing and play testing. Further, though a few of the missions are pretty good, most are uninteresting, uninspiring, or just don't work very well. So this book is NOT worth anywhere near the MSRP. But, if you can get a good deal on this book, it's definitely worth it. Here's why.
The best thing about this book are the special rules and random scenario generator at the end (it's very flexible, so you can use all of them, or just the parts you like). For example, you can roll a D20 to determine what type of terrain there is (snow, desert, jungle, swamp, etc.), type of mission (skirmish, ambush, rescue, escape, etc.), and more. All options in this section of the book come with their own interesting and easy to understand special rules. I also like many of the special equipment tiles. For example, there are med packs that heal, power packs that generate a random positive effect (for example, character gains accurate shot, +10 hit points, +2 defense, +1 attack, +5 damage, etc.), and weapons lockers that add to or enhance a characters special ability (for example, character gains grenades ability, deal critical hits on a 19 or 20, deals triple damage on critical hits, etc.), just to name a few. These equipment tiles provide a few new wrinkles that will make a nice addition to virtually any skirmish. Finally, though not perfect, it is also nice to get a new double-sided map (Mos Eisley on one side and Cloud City on the other), as well as the other/new terrain tiles of various sizes (many with their own special rules or statistics at the end of the book).
In sum, I would not buy this book for the scenarios (which make up the first 79 pages). But, if you can get a good deal on this book, I'd say it's definitely worth it just for special rules, scenario generator, tiles, and maps (though these few good parts make up only the last 17 pages). Though the book is not great overall, these good parts are VERY good, and definitely worth having if the price is right.
Ultimate Missions: Rebel Storm (Star Wars Miniatures: Accessory).......2005-07-28
Excellent product for who they play with StarWars miniature
Ultimate Missions not so ultimate.......2005-07-19
When I order the Ultimate Missions: Rebel Storm book I couldn't wait to try it out. Alot of the senarios in the book looked really neat but in practice they weren't all that great. The missions are very one sided so that the senario will play out just like it happens in the movie. Very good for realists but not very fun for playing a game. The only good thing about the book is the last chapter. It has alternate game play rules, stats for additional equipment that comes with the book, and a random senario generator. The only way I would pick this book up is if you don't pay very much for it.
Good Concept for Initial Supplement Nice Graphic Design.......2004-12-31
This booklet is a good place to start before embarking on your own generated scenarios, tournaments or campaigns.
I appreciated the heads-up on the editorial and packaging shortcomings in the previous reviews. I was able to leaf through at the bookstore and picked-up a copy at amazon and don't regret it.
For my money's worth, I like the idea of mimicing basic scenarios from the films as an initial supplement to the Rebel Storm Starter set, map and rules. The basic idea of a Star Wars miniatures game played on well-designed grid map is something I would have liked the opportunity to play as a kid in the 70's. It might be a simple pleasure, but it fits the bill.
You can find corrections to errata on wizards.com forums, or google search "Star Wars Minis Clarifications" as compiled by Guy Fullerton, the Official Star Wars Minis Net Rep.
The foldout map did in fact start to rip the illustrations at stuck-together folds, as previous reviews noted. I had to CAREFULLY hold it over a boiling pot of water in order to steam the folds loose so they could be gingerly peeled apart without ripping the illustrations at the seams. This worked well and saved the rest of the map from being torn, but it shouldn't be necessary.
The scenarios make good use of this map as well as the map & tiles from the Rebel Storm Starter set. It does help to have the specific characters in your collection to achieve the full effect of the movie-based scenarios, but it can be played with any SW miniatures totalling points listed. Some Substitute characters are listed in the Setup.
The book layout is easy to follow with the Scenario Mission backgrounds, a map inset showing the starting areas and any victory goal areas where applicable on the left-hand pages, and the Character Squad Setups, Victory Conditions, Special Scenario Rules and Campaign Play notes on the right-hand pages.
The extra smaller tiles are useful (which have to be cut apart with an Xacto knife or scissors) and supplemental rules making use of an interrogation droid, power packs, medpacs, e-web blaster (similar to the Snowtrooper's giant blaster on Hoth), destroyed tiles, speeder bike, landspeeder and Han Solo frozen in carbonite (for use in a Bounty Hunter's Showdown scenario).
There's brief but effective rules for Hidden Movement, Reinforcements, Reserves, Traps, Speeder Bike Chases, Trenches, Weapons Lockers and Windows that are used in various scenarios.
Campaign Play sidebars describe an option to play 2,500 point forces from which units compete within each mission and which dwindle down by the time the final missions are played out.
Each mission includes background text to set-up the scenario. Some missions are linked to one another in a logical progression of events. Not all scenarios are combat based. Some require escaping, evading, pursuing etc. The Random Mission Types include Skirmish, Ambush, Rescue, Confrontation, Escape, Purge, Capture, Sabotage and Bunker Raids outlined by Scenario Lengths, Attacker and Defender Setups, Victory Conditions and Special Scenario Rules for each. The descriptions are brief and concise, but that's all they need to be. There's enough variety to satisfy or inspire most scenarios.
The graphic design and layout is very professional and well-organized which helps one overlook the editorial errata and difficulty unfolding a stuck-together but beautifuly illustrated map (which accounts for a 4-star review).
I recommend this and look forward to the Ultimate Missions: Clone Strike supplement.
Expands the original game........2004-12-07
This series of thirty-three game senarios fits the conditions in the original three Star Wars movies, now called IV, V, and VI. It requires the Star Wars Miniatures Rebel Storm Starter Set and the Rebel Storm Booster Pack to play. This book is intended to extend the games by providing other situations beyond those in the original package.
Reading this as a book by itself, without knowing about the game and original rules will not make a lot of sense. To be sure the senarios are not too far ranging from the original movies, but this is a good start from which to expand.
