Book Description

Binmore's groundbreaking text on game theory explores the manner in which rational people should interact when they have conflicting interests. While Binmore uses a light touch to outline key developments in theory, the text remains a serious exposition of a serious topic. In addition, his unique story-telling approach allows students to immediately apply game-theoretic skills to simple problems. Each chapter ends with a host of challenging exercises to help students practice the skills they have learned. The highly anticipated revision, expected in 2003, will include more coverage of cooperative game theory and a more accessible presentation—with chapters broken up into smaller chunks and an abundance of economic examples integrated throughout the text.

5 out of 5 stars Lies from noahdassati (GOETTINGEN Germany) .......2005-11-10

The review of noahdassati (GOETTINGEN Germany) is a simple disgrace.

Binmore's book is perhaps, typographically, the most beautiful book ever published in theoretical economics. It is also intellectually challenging, and contains an often-quoted wonderful paragraph on teaching (Google).

In LSE in the 1970's and 80's Ken Binmore was widely regarded as overwhelmingly the best lecturer in any possible subject, despite competition from brilliancies by David Hendry.

noahdassati's review is ignorant, ill-informed and a disgrace.

4 out of 5 stars wet your appetite for game theory.......2003-11-01

first, a note on ken binmore: he was involved in the model of a worldwide auction that did very well. subsequently, he has become very rich and probably will not write another edition of this book. his model was based on game theoretic concepts.

this book has a few features that i think everyone interested in it should know about.

1. this is not at all a mathematically rigorous treatment of game theory. the proofs are few and far between and leave something to be desired. e.g. the famous "minimax" theorem.

2. this book was given as a text for my undergraduate game theory class. there are some interesting problems, but many may be considered too easy for students of mathematics.

3. if you are a student of math, you should try the higher numbered problems for more of a challenge.

4. the author does not cover games of imperfect information.

5. the book is very easy to read. the explanations are very clear.

6. the author partions the book into parts relevant to economics-math-philosophy students. i would recommend reading all the sections.

5 out of 5 stars Reference for late entrant game theorists.......2001-11-01

I find this book to be an excellent book to give me a complete idea of game theoretic concepts. I have to use them in my research, but have not had early training in it. This book, intended to be used as an undergraduate text, rounds out my analytic approach to the concepts with a number of examples and common problems in Game Theory.

It goes into quite advanced topics, such as evolutionary stability, and does not shy away from discussing cooperative game theory.

4 out of 5 stars Good stories, can be distracting.......2000-05-18

Ken Binmore is an excellent story-teller. The book is an introduction to the mathematics of game theory with a wealth of examples that can distracting to a beginning student. Its weakest point is the discussion of equilibrium in mixed strategies in one breath with security strategies, which are the same concept only for zero-sum games but otherwise quite different. For streamlined mathematics and clarity, Roger Myerson's "Game Theory" is better. But every important concept of noncooperative games is there if you have the patience to sit back and read and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Game theory with fun.......1999-04-22

This book is wonderful! It is true, learning game theory using this book IS fun. However, this does not mean that the book is easy. Sometimes it took me one our per page. The point is that game theory is taught properly.

        Book Description

One of Abbeville's most spectacular achievements, representing the highest standards in fine art printing, now available at a more economical price.

This marvelous edition of Audubon's Birds of America displays all 435 of Audubon's brilliant handcolored engravings in exquisite reproductions taken from the original plates of the Audubon Society's archival copy of the rare Double Elephant Folio. Although many attempts have been made to re-create the magnificent illustrations in Audubon's masterpiece, nothing equals the level of fidelity or scale achieved in this high-quality edition.

Completely reorganized and annotated by Roger Tory Peterson, who was America's best-known ornithologist, and issued with the full endorsement and cooperation of the Audubon Society, this volume is the first to rearrange the plates in a more scientific order. Peterson's fascinating introduction places Audubon in the context of the history of American ornithological art and also reproduces a wide sampling of the work of Audubon's notable predecessors and disciples, including Peterson's own justly famous paintings.

This new systematic arrangement of the prints, complete with informative commentaries about each bird, made it possible to correct many of the problems or errors in Audubon's original edition that later scholarship revealed.

        Other Details: 428 full-color illustrations, 435 duotones.

        3 out of 5 stars A Good Companion.......2007-07-14

Having recently read the biography of Audubon, I was very interested in seeing the actual drawings. The book I read had a few of them in black and white, but I wanted to see a larger sample in color. I decided to see if Amazon had anything and was very surprised to see that they offered all of the original drawings in color for a very small price. I realized the book would be smaller than the original life size drawings, but was a little surprised to find that the book was so small. That is my main problem with the book. Otherwise - WOW. To see these birds in all their glory in full color is just breathtaking. Furthermore, when you consider the original size, to have shrunk them down and still maintain the detail and the beauty is quite impressive. One can appreciate the drawings without having read about Audobon's struggle to create and then publish them, but I would suggest this book as a companion to a good biography of Audobon. Once you have both, his accomplishment can be fully appreciated.

        5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2005-08-02

This book is spectacular. The images are breathtaking, and the quality of their presentation is nothing short of superb. Wow!!!

        4 out of 5 stars Why reorganize a symphony?.......2004-11-30

Let me qualify my remarks by first saying that I have not even seen this version. I have no doubt that the printing is of the highest quality, but I have a serious reservation about the organization of this book. Audubon deliberately mixed his birds in a non-taxonomic order to maintain a freshness and an element of suprise. I recently acquired a large format copy published by Welcome Rain, which follows Audubon's original order. The effect is a delightful romp through nature, full of suprises, drama and movement. He never intended it to be a catalog with all his ducks in a row, it was to be an experience. I have seen an abridged, small format edition of his paintings arranged in the standard, dull taxonomic order of a typical field guide and the effect is nothing like seeing them in the order Audubon intended. Rearranging the plates for convenience of listers diminishes this work, and to a certain extent, is a disservice to the artist. While I am happy to see that his work remains in print and is being reproduced at very high standards, I would hope that it would be viewed as a symphony, not as a random collection of notes needing to be organized alphabetically.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful volume of audubon.......2004-07-16

If you are a birder and you collect all the great bird books, your collection is not complete until you get this. A beautiful book, contained in a hard case, with excellent printing. A steal at $250 at its original price, now knocked down between $125 to $185. Get this book! A great tribute to Peterson and Audubon.

Want to learn how to speak the language of critters, large and small? Easy-to-read and understand, Ted Andrews's bestselling Animal Speak shows readers how to identify his or her animal totem and learn how to invoke its energy and use it for personal growth and inner discovery. Nature lovers will love this insightful compendium, chock-full of touching stories about animals, natural history, and animal folklore. Readers will also learn magical animal rites and how to read omens. Animal Speak includes a dictionary of bird, animal, reptile, and insect totems, which describe each creature's meaning. For example, if a person's totem is dragonfly, he or she was most likely excessively emotional and passionate in early years, learning with age to balance it with mental clarity and control. If a dragonfly suddenly shows up in your life, it means you may need to gain a new perspective or make a change. --P. Randall Cohan

4 out of 5 stars Animals do indeed communicate information to us.......2007-10-02

This book was recommended to me several years ago, and since reading it I regularly refer to it as an informational resource. On many occasions I have been amazed at how relevant the information about a particular creature was to what I was experiencing at the time it happened to cross my path. I found Animal Speak to be of such value to me that I chose to include an excerpt from it within my own book. As such, I highly recommend it to any person who has interest in the spiritual path.

Animal Speak: The Spiritual & Magical Powers of Creatures Great & Small

Great book, I had seen Ted Andrews in person, what an incredible man. I already had so many books at the time, I did not buy it then and have him sign it. But recently it is the time of skunks and well, I have just seen/smell for several weeks. My friend has the book, and she read me the section about skunks, and it was amazing. how much of what it had to say about skunks, from strength, relationships, boundaries, sensuality, were the things I was looking at in my life. So I decided to buy the book after all, and it is a great thing.

5 out of 5 stars Animal Speak Still Going Strong.......2007-08-11

This purchase was a replacement for an fifteen year old copy that I simply wore out. I bought the first copy when I met Ted Andrews in 1987, I teach neo-shamanism and suggest that all of my students have this book and it's accompaniment "Nature Speak." Ted is a naturalist and knows animals and nature first hand. He combines his knowledge with ancient and modern myth and lore to give us a comprehensive guide to how animals interact in our metaphysical world.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Information about animal symbolism.......2007-07-31

"The most common belief in many societies is that spiritual guides often use animals or animal imagery to communicate their purpose and roles to humans." -From the book.

I was drawn to this book several years ago when I had a recurring dream about an animal and felt sure that there was an important message in it for me. I have used it several times since to look up the meaning associated with certain animals that came across my path. We may think that these encounters are random or coincidental, but they're not. Often we don't see signs that are right in front of us. Does it take a billboard to get you to take notice? For me, sometimes it does, but I have tried to slow down and pay attention to these subtle natural nudges because a lot of times, they contain a powerful message or just good advice! Just as symbols, seeing/encountering certain animals may, on the surface have no meaning to us, but our subconcious knows what it means.

There is a HUGE amount of information in this book. It is very interesting to read. In addition to finding out the meanings/messages of animals, it also tells you how to find out what your nature totems are and how to work with that energy.

In chapter 4 'Reading signs and omens in nature' there are charts for the meanings or symbolism of certain trees and flowers and the positive/negative qualities of colors.

Highly interesting book and great to have for reference.

5 out of 5 stars Excellet Book for Teaching Citizenship.......2005-02-01

As a volunteer who teaches citizenship, I can say that this book, and its accompanying teacher's guide, is a good teaching tool for Citizenship for the group of students at which it is aimed - the low-beginning learner, who does not have great English skills.

Yes, anyone can go to the USCIS (formerly INS) website and get the 100 history and civics questions to study, as another reviewer noted. That person can even download from the USCIS the sample dication sentences, and the PDF documents (of 100 plus pages) that contain the USCIS's study guides on both American History and Civics. And I agree that's all that the average, college educated (perhaps high school educated) immigrant needs.

But that is NOT an option for my students, who are smart but who have little or no educational backgroun in American history, and whose English skills are not the best. Those students don't know what World War II was (and look at those words and say "World War Eleven" because they are not familiar with Roman numerals). Those students don't know what the word "emancipation" means, or what the word "preamble" means. I have had students who don't know what the word "slave" or "king" means.

Even the more motivated students I have had who have obtained the lists and memorized the questions by rote and given the correct answers to the questions have asked me over and over "what does that mean?"

This book does an excellent job of boiling the information behind the 100 questions down to the basics. Its pictures may seem juvenile, but that's not the point - the point is that the book brings out the basic information, and explains it so that the student can make sense of the question, and thus the answer. And understanding the question and answer is far better, in my opinion, than just learning things by rote.

These students are not political science majors, as another reviewer has noted. So just explaining the words "Electoral College", is a challenge. Nor is this the place to engage in an anthropological debate about where the Native Americans came from and quibble about whether they were actually the first "Settlers" or "Inhabitants" (although I understand there is scholarship to support the notion thattheir ancestors likely migrated over the Siberian land bridge and therefore could be called "settlers", it doesn't explain all the Viking lore we have here in Minnesota;-).

The point is to give these students a fair shot at becoming citizens. The point is to help them try to understand as much as possible the knowledge they are being asked to demonstrate during their face to face, potentially nerve wracking interview with "The Government Of The United States." Like all students forced to learn an unknown subject to achieve a goal, some will become interested enough in the subject to pursue its deeper meanings, and contradictions, later. Others will not (how many born Americans know who wrote the Declaration of Independence, much less what it really SAID?

This is an excellent book that gives people who have little or no background in American history and government, and not so great English skills a good chance at learning, and understanding, at least the basics of the topic. That's all it claims to do, so any other objection to it beyond that listing is really unfair.

1 out of 5 stars Do not get this book! It's unnecessary!.......2002-05-14

I just took my citizenship test today; this book was not helpful at all!

Instead, go to the INS site and download the 100 questions which are listed as sample questions.

These are the same questions you'll be asked. Your interviewer will ask you 10 questions from that list. So, just prepare for those 100 questions and you'll do fine.

                                          Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Easy to read and right to the point........1999-09-17

I have been in the field of ESL for almost 20 years now. Although I have never taught a citizenship class, civic education has been an integral part of all my ESL courses in the U.S. It had been always a problem for me to find the "right" texts for my beginning level students until this book came along. The contextual connection this book makes between illustrations and key concepts/terms of the U.S. history and government has broken new ground for civic education in the ESL setting, particularly for beginners.

The reflection I have of my own classes and my observation of others' has convinced me that sometimes our classes, for whatever reason, become occasions exhibiting what we know about a subject rather than an opportunity for students to learn what they need about a subject. This book, simple as it may look to civic scholars, not only reminds me of what my students need, but also helps me show what some abstract concepts are such as religion, freedom, government, etc. Less well-educated new immigrants are no Political Science majors. This book, along with its cassettes and self-study materials, offers what they need to pass the citizenship test. In fact, I sometimes wonder whether the author is a recent immigrant herself. How else could she have known so precisely what new immigrants would need in their civic education?!

To the ESL teachers interested in using civic education materials in their classes, I would say, Give this book a try. To recent immigrants struggling with English language and basic knowlege of the U.S. government, I would also say, Give this book a try. It may not help you chitchat with a sales clerk in the mall, but will certainly help you impress the INS interviewing officials.

                                              Book Description

An insider's guide to the recipes, ingredients, and traditions that define international city cuisine, the Foods of the World series is the definitive cookbook collection for anyone passionate about food and travel. In Florence, culinary artisans, bakers, winemakers and chefs are equally revered as masters of their crafts. From antipasti to dessert, the city's classic recipes include Ribollita, Grilled Florentine Steak, and Almond Biscotti.

                                              Key Features:

                                              * Bring Tuscan cuisine to your kitchen with well-loved recipes such as Bruschetta with White Beans and Olive Oil or Ricotta Ravioli with Fresh Tomatoes

                                              * Read about how culinary practices such as pressing fresh olive oil, baking bread, and making wine have formed the foundation of Tuscan cuisine for centuries

                                              * Discover recipes and tips from chefs at some of Florence's favorite trattorias, osterias, and restaurants

                                              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on the food, cooking and culture of Florence.......2006-05-02

This review is written from the perspective of someone that has been studying cooking for 25 years, and concentrating on Italian cooking for the last 10 years. I have more than 100 cookbooks on Italian cooking and have traveled to Italy many times. I am a tough critic on Italian cookbooks.

This book begins with a little history of Italian cooking, the outdoor markets and specialty shops in Florence. Then the book discusses the following topics from a Florentine perspective:
                                              Salumi and Affettati (cured meat)
                                              Tuscan Olive Oil
                                              Cafes
                                              Tuscan Wine
                                              Artisan Bread
                                              Artisan Cheese
                                              Gelato

The recipe section is subdivided as follows:
                                              Antipasti
Primi (first course: soup, pasta, pizza)
Secondi (second course: meat and fish
                                              Contorni (side dishes: vegetables)
                                              Dolci (sweets)

The photography i nbook is fabulous. They did a wonderful job of capturing what it is like to walk down the streets in Florence. As you turn the pages each new photo is another little peak into Florentine life and food. If you have traveled to Florence you will recognize many of the street scenes that were photographed.

The recipes are authentic. I am especially fond of the recipe for Grilled Florentine Steak with Arugula and Parmesan. Of the recipes that I have prepared (approximately 80% of the book) all have turned out exactly as I expected. A few of the recipes are time consuming. It is not reasonable to expect to make homemade pizza in a hurry, not if you want it to be excellent. The recipe for pizza makes individual pies for each diner, as is the custom in Italy.

If you are looking for a nice authentic cookbook on the cooking of Florence, written for Americans you will love this book. My only complaint is that the book left me wanting more photographs and more recipes. Overall, this is an excellent book for those that love Italian cooking or love Florence. A well executed book on the food, cooking and culture of Firenze.

                                              5 out of 5 stars not only a cookbook..........2006-03-24

This book is just great, besides the perfect recipes it has nice pictures from Florence. I've been there and first time I opened the book: lots of nice memories came to my mind. As a culinary aficionado I will strongly recommend this book for those who like to know more about this lovely city and it's amazing food.
I bought this book as a gift for a very special person and I know she will love it!
