Global Environmental Politics: Power, Perspectives, and Practice

Traditional views of global environmental politics take the structures and relations of international politics as a given. Solutions to environmental problems, then, must be products of concession, negotiation, and inevitable compromise--a world of top-down planetary management. Lipschutz challenges students to question these conventional approaches. He argues that much light can be shed on global environmental degradation if we look beyond the politics of conflict and cooperation and explore environmental problems from their very "roots."

Using a framework that accounts for the ontologies, material conditions, and power relations that structure global environmental problems, Lipschutz is able to more effectively question attempts to clean up the globe and sustain the world's natural resources. Throughout the text, the author uses compelling cases to illustrate the effects of globalization and capitalism, yet is careful to make the link between the local and the global to show how we, as individuals, are both consumers of goods and producers of pollution.

How is the financing of a water system in Bolivia linked to long-standing forestation practices in India?
Taking nothing for granted, the root causes of major global environmental problems are exposed and subjected to rigorous analysis. Lipschutz shows, for instance, how privatization operates in different global contexts with strikingly similar consequences.

I took AP Biology in my sophmore year. Over the year in the Biology class, I hardly understood anything and had many difficulties. I did not learn much biology in the class because my teacher apparently did not know how to teach and I'm not sure if she knew what she was talking about. Time passed by and I knew that the AP exam was coming up and that in order to do well on it, I had to study myself. Three weeks before the exam, I started studying . I bought this book and finished it off in a week. I then read the Princeton Review AP Biology book, which was not nearly as helpful as this one was. I finished off by reading the Cliff Notes AP Biology which was slightly better than this book. Anyway, thanks to all that reading, I got a 5!

This book has excellent practice questions and practice exams. The section after each chapter was also helpful. My suggestion--get this book and the cliff notes ap biology book and that's all you need to ace the exam. You may also want to get one other book to get some extra practice. Good luck!

Epiphanies of Beauty.......2007-07-08

John Drysdale's photographic art makes us see the world anew. The interactions captured between animals and animals, such as the llama and the dog in Ear Nibble, and between animals and humans, such as There, There, are authentically artistic and creative. Modern artists too often want to shock or politically manipulate the viewer. Drysdale is an artist with a camera and an intelligent aim. I enjoyed the photographs for their beauty, and I used them to inspire my writing students. The photographs became the starting points for interesting stories that my reluctant writers were eager to work on.

Whimsical Images Worth a Double-Take.......2003-03-20

This collection of photographer John Drysdale's extensive catalog emphasizes unexpected juxtapositions of animals and people or both. His almost understated images draw you in for more than a passing look, and you wonder how did he come upon some of these depictions. Are they posed, staged, or natural?

Ultimately, that does not matter, for the overall effect indeed suggests a peaceable kingdom, which, if not truly attainable, can still inspire and intrigue.

Mr. Drysdale takes his subjects seriously, even if the result seems almost comic, and there is a refreshing lack of pretension mixed with a dry wit throughout this collection.

This is book you will want to carry to the back porch on a lazy, rainy day or share with your children while dinner is in the oven. It's fun to hear how children react to some of the images that run counter to how we have conditioned to expect animals and people to behave.

Some of my favorite photos, however, are those of just people, timeless and frozen in yesteryear's pursuits.

John Drysdale's delightful photographs will charm any age. Looking at "Excert 1" will give you an idea of his subject matter. In addition to the unusual photos of animals and children, there are fascinating stories, such as the cat who befriended a mouse with 2 photos of them together--one of them napping together and another of them sharing a saucer of milk. The photos and stories are precious and leaves one with a feeling that we do indeed have a "peaceable kingdom." A great gift for anyone who can see--animal lover or not.

Interesting Baseball Read.......2007-05-13

Author Bob Vanderberg recounts the exciting Chicago White Sox - New York Yankees rivalry from 1951-1964. Readers learn about each of these exciting years, including detailed descriptions of each season's most nail-biting games. We sense the rivalry's tension from these pages, even if the ending was usually the same un-thrilling story. As many know, the Yankees won every pennant but two from 1949-1964, with only Cleveland and Chicago as consistent challengers. Strong pitching often had the White Sox in first place until August, but they usually faded down the stretch. Why? Chicago's batting order typically had two good hitters (Minnie Minoso, Nellie Fox) and was thus no match for powerful Yankee lineups of Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Moose Skowron, Hank Bauer, Elston Howard, etc. When Chicago finally won the pennant in 1959 (their first in 40 years) they edged out Cleveland; the Yankees had an uncharacteristic off year.

This book provides an interesting and readable look at this tense but uneven rivalry. Older fans will recall many of the games and details, while younger readers get a nice sense of baseball from decades past.

Don't be fooled by the title.......2006-05-10

As a clinician-scientist, I believe in evidence
based medicine
There is no evidence base to support the work-out
shown here to my knowledge have been proven
to build bones as opposed to other types
of exercise. As scientist from respected institution
like NASA can tell you, the only most important
way the body needs to stimulate bone building
is periodic weight-bearing exercises & stepping.
The same view is shared by neurophysiologists
of NIH of USA

Who Knew?.......2006-03-26

I learned a lot about how to keep my ospeopedia from progressing into osteoperosis. Who knew that walking did not help? This book claims that the key to preventing osteoporsis is weight training. The author provides six basic, progressive work-out progams which can be done at home. I was definitely inspired to try her approach to preventing bone loss.

WHAT YOUR DOCTOR FORGOT TO TELL YOU!!.......2005-07-21

Like many people who are diagnosed with osteopenia or osteoporosis, I recived just about NO information from my doctor on how to improve bone health. It was just -- "take this pill and I'll see you at your annual physical." I was deeply upset that she had no information for me, provided almost no insight, and seemed vastly disinterested in providing any. I went out and looked for books to provide the information I needed. I found this book and couldn't be happier. In conjunction with Gillian Sanson's enlightening book "The Myth of Osteoporisis," this book should be in the hands of everyone who is interested in bone health.

This is an absolutely fabulous book! Well laid out, exercises are easy to do, 2 each routines for those with osteoporosis, osteopenia, or no diagnosis of either. A GREAT segment on spinal alignment.

This is a MUST HAVE book for every person who is interested in bone health. I liked the fact that although the majority of the exercises show a female demonstrator, her partner in some segments was male, and the demonstrator for spinal alignment is male. Men get osteoporisis, too.

Wnderful book!! Highly recommended.
