Book Description
Globalization is at the heart of debates about the present phase of development of the world economy. In Globalization and the Postcolonial World, Ankie Hoogvelt joins these debates to examine the ways in which globalization is affecting the countries of the developing world. Taking a new look at historical trends and theories in development studies, Hoogvelt describes the diverse impacts of globalization in sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, East Asia, and Latin America, identifying different postcolonial responses in each of these regions.
New to this edition are sections on the new "digital" economy; the resurgence of the United States after decades of putative relative decline and the question of renewed U.S. dominance in the global system; and the volatility of the global financial markets culminating in the East Asia crisis of 1997. Part II has been thoroughly reconfigured and expanded, as have the chapters on East Asia and on Africa. Finally, the conclusions have been rethought in the light of the mushrooming cloud of antiglobalist protests.

Clearcut and systematic.......2001-09-25
this is the second best argument I've read on globalization. the best one is Giddens's theorizing. the edge point of Giddens's theory on globalization, for example The Consequences of Modernity, is overarching reach of conception. but he ignored the economic dimension of globalization. upto recent work, Runaway World, he has focused on social and political dimension of globalization. yep. it's the legimate territory of sociology. when his theory is coupled with global village(McLuhan) or global consciousness (Roland Robertson) I think it can be powerful tool to capture the global integration of lifestyle or culture. but isn't the economic impetus the dominant feature of globalization?
on this point, I've relied on world system theory to get the overall picture. but the author pinpoints that theory blurs off the uniqueness of recent phenomenon. the distinction the author makes, of globalization and internationalization, transnationalization is insightful and provocative to me. for it can serve to depict somewhat new phenomenon. he points out the new chracteristics of global economic system like this.
A Global Market Discpline & Principle: Unlike previous international econmic situation, it must be argued that there was global market-place where Licardian international division of labor and international product-service exchange dominated the time. but now since mid 70s, there has been a global market discipline i.e., system. the its concrete content is somewhat standard: Intra-firm trade or integrated international production system, Inter-product trade, intra-product trade. but he systemizes those facts under new conception. for exaple, he use the term ?iscpline to indicate the internalization of cut-throat competition in global market into market participant? code of conduct. this could be the intersection between economic, political and social theory.

Book Description
An ambitious new work by a well-respected economic sociologist, Rational Choice Theory and Organizational Theory: A Critique, offers a new perspective on the strategy and actions of organizations. In merging economic, psychological, and sociological literature as they focus on organizations, author Mary Zey contends that a historical political economy contingency theory provides the key to understanding how organizations function and the relationships between individuals and organizations in which they work. She brings to our attention that economic and other types of organizations differ in their behavior from rational individuals and rational markets. Zey integrates macro- and micro-levels of analysis while drawing together internal and external contingencies to explain how decisions are taken. Zey interprets, synthesizes, and critiques the important work of renowned scholars of rational choice, finance, and organizations including James March, Michael Jensen, and Oliver Williamson to analyze corporate decision making, differentiating it from individual decision making. The analysis is distinguished by inclusive thinking and new approaches to issues that have long confronted those who think about, theorize about, work with, and manage organizations. Mary ZeyÆs work expands the understanding of decision making by presenting evidence that points to the wide range and complexity of human decision making. The rational choice theorists, led most notably by Oliver Williamson and James Coleman, adhere to the tenets of transaction cost analysis and agency theory when looking at micro- and macro-level decisions made by people and organizations. Other models of decision making (habit, emotion, moral and ethical values, among others) have been labeled as deviations from formal rationality. Mary Zey calls these "deviations" alternative motives behind decision making, and her books are an attempt to present the leading work from this point of view. Rational Choice Theory and Organizational Theory: A Critique is the first single-authored volume to analyze and present an alternative model to decision making theory and serves as a companion to Decision Making (Sage, 1992). Rational Choice Theory and Organizational Theory will be useful to professors and students of decision making theory, organizational theory, sociology of organizations, and social theory.

Book Description
This book describes the genetics, biochemistry, and epidemiology of host-pathogen interactions in plant disease, especially as they concern the breeding of crops for disease resistance. It analyzes a wealth of information that has not previously been recorded in other books or reviews. Some of it stems from basic surveys of disease in the field. The analysis of these surveys not only explains a great deal about host-pathogen interactions that was heretofore obscure, but also indicates directions for future research. Other data, from original papers, have now been coordinated for the first time and organized in a way that suggests new areas of research. The book contains more than fifty new tables that integrate data and relate them to general principles of host-pathogen interactions.
For plant pathologists and plant breeders concerned with the control of plant disease, the book shows how to manipulate the host and, indirectly, the pathogen in order to control disease. It analyzes records of resistance against disease that time has shown to be stable in an effort to determine what has kept this resistance stable. It also analyzes the structure of virulence in populations of a pathogen, and demonstrates how virulence can be deliberately restricted. The author updates information on the gene-for-gene hypothesis and discusses the numerical and biological implications of the hypothesis. He analyzes the structure of epidemics based on three fundamental variables: the initial inoculum, the progeny/parent ratio of the pathogen, and the latent period. The author concentrates on the progeny/parent ratio - a subject not hitherto probed in detail in the literature - and shows how to determine the type of epidemic that can occur.

Book Description
The GRE subject tests are among the most difficult standardized exams. Rather than testing general problem-solving skills, they require highly specialized knowledge.
The experts at The Princeton Review have thoroughly research each subject test to provide students with the most thorough, up-to-date information available. Students don’t need to relearn the entire histories of their fields—just what they need to know to earn high scores on the exams.
Each guide includes one full-length practice exam, complete with comprehensive explanations for every solution.
Customer Reviews:
Explains clearly but doesn't include all subjects fully.......2006-06-14
The book is easy to read and gives background information and a general review but does not cover all topics, although it did mention some subjects not included in the Kaplan book. I think if used with proper review material to expand on the subjects mentioned it is useful.
Vocab List is Worth a Look and P. Test is Helpful.......2005-12-01
Barring the Hugh Grant look-alike on the front, I first thought this book was nearly worthless. Then I looked at the vocab list and took the practice test -- they were both very helpful. It's too bad the rest of the book is sinfully shoddy, made on cheap newspaper, all black and white type -- if you didn't learn it in Freshman Biology with the color photos and CD-ROMS and 3D glasses and cattle-prod or whatever they use now, then cheap newspaper and crummy drawings won't help now.
If you're trying to save money, you could just go to a book-store and copy the vocab list at the back. See if you like the p. test, you might buy the whole book (esp at the price Amazon has now -- I paid almost 30$ for it from a regular bookstore). But do get that vocab list -- it's about 30 words that were all over the test, words nobody in their right mind would know unless they knew it would be on a test.
The practice test was helpful because UNLIKE ETS, the Princeton Review p. test gives explanations for all the answers and I did learn a couple of terms/ideas that were on the test from which I benefitted by going through answer explanations and correcting my test.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best.......2005-08-02
After trying several books on training, I always come back to this one. Not at all dated but I just wish Al could bring it back into print. This book took me to a 3:18 first marathon and a 29 minute PR a year later. The author is now one of the top prep coaches in Houston.
Tough Workouts That can make you faster.......2001-12-08
This is a book with a series of planned distance runner workouts
to get you in shape for the time you want to run. If you want to run a 40 minute 10K or a 34 minute 10K, the author has got the workouts for 7 days a week that run for months until you are ready to peak. Lots of track workouts, tempo and distance runs. I got in great shape following the workouts for my goal; however, the workouts are tough. I used to do the workouts for a goal a minute slower than my true goal because the workouts were a little too tough. I think the workouts set for specific times were really keyed to make you faster than the time you were training for. If you want to have a planed training program and run your optimum, this is it.
One of the Best I've Ever Read.......1999-06-05
I have used this book to enhance my training for 5k to the Marathon. It is easy to use and makes a lot of sense. I have also had the pleasure of getting additional help from Al in person. He is my idea of what a coach should be.
Most comprehensive, readable and directed manual for runners.......1998-09-14
No matter how much experience you have as a runner, this guide can help you achieve any goal. It is too bad it is out of print; my copy has swelled with rain water from sitting at trackside, been stepped on coming back from workouts, and generally seen more mileage than any of my shoes. Now, if only it would come back into print, I could replace it. The book outlines workout schedules, means to recover from injury, and nearly any other information you might need.
Well-written and concise; a "must-have" for marathoners.......1998-08-22
Although this book has been out of print for fifteen years, I managed to borrow a copy from a fellow runner. She recommended it to me because it was very down-to-earth and realistic. She was absolutely right. I have been toying with the idea of running a marathon for years, but every guide or book or program that I have tried has always resulted in a loss of interest in running or a nagging injury. This book is different. It is written by experienced runners who have won consecutive NCAA track championship races and worked with a variety of runners of all types. All the training techniques have been tested and proven to work with emphasis in all the key areas of a runner's life, not just running. This book is one of the best kept secrets in the running world. If anyone has a copy they want to give up, I would sure love to have it. The book lists specific running schedules leading up to specific target times for specific race lengths. It also shows how to adjust the running/training schedules to accomodate conflicts without compromising the goal. Happy reading and good luck!
Customer Reviews:
The Definitive book on training.......1999-09-21
This book gives you everything you want and more! I followed this closely when I had a crummy track coach in high school and my times ended up being exactly at the race pace I was training for. I have used these workouts in coaching as well and have seen great success with them. A lot of the books that come out nowadays are just commentaries on runners--this one gives you the year-round training schedules you've been looking for.
Excellent running schedules for all levels and distances!.......1999-08-25
The second part of the series concentrates on shorter distances (800m to 5,000m/5miles). Along with general information and discussions the most useful part of the book are the practical day-by-day 10-week schedules. The schedules are very specific - depending on time goals, initial preparation and the distance. Excellent book!

Research Papers for Dummies.......2007-02-06
Great, this is very helpful for my College Course; it is a refresher for me
the book is ok.......2007-01-13
the book gives great information, but no solid examples for you to go by. it's a great read, but I learn better from seeing what what I am reading. I owuld not buy this book again.
A Formula That Works!.......2004-02-03
Research Papers for Dummies could easily be called "Recipes for Research" because the same process is followed in every research production. You really can't find a simpler guide on the market that does justice to the important business of writing effective and intelligible research papers.
Of course finding the answers in short order is sometimes the key problem and I've found The Practical Pundit to be a quick solution to gathering my material prior to sitting down to order and write.

Book Description
The timeless and collectible classic on entertaining-at last back in print!
Dorothy Draper (1889-1969), like her contemporaries Diana Vreeland and Elsie de Wolfe, became an icon of stylish living through her interior decorating and many books.
Originally published in 1941, Entertaining Is Fun! is one of Draper's most delightful creations, hailed in the original flap copy of the book as "neither a cookbook nor a book of etiquette, but a vivacious and inspiring book on home entertaining." With its charming retro package, this book teaches you how to host the most fabulous dinner parties, holiday meals, and weddings, and also makes a great gift!
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining is Fun!: How to Be a Popular Hostess.......2007-06-08
What a wonderful book. I enjoy looking at it again and again. Great ideas from years ago that can still be used today!
Entertaining is Fun!.......2006-11-02
Dorothy Draper was known for her sense of style in both decorating and entertaining. Although this book was written in the mid-1900s the entertaining suggestions are timeless. The book itself is fun with its typical 1950s illustrations and speech. This is a book that is fun to use to while away an afternoon.
Charming!.......2005-11-09
This book is wonderful. I just love Draper's tone and conversational way of writing. She offers ideas for all budgets and lifestyles. Charmingly retro, with plenty of good advice for today's hostesses. I could not put it down.
THE housewarming gift for gay men.......2005-05-01
Not as important or famous as Draper's "Decorating is Fun," but her 1941 "Entertaining" book is still amusing, deserving a spot on your coffee table next to an old 1940s Emily Post Etiquette book (when is somone gonna get wise and issue reprints of THOSE?).
Among the highlights is a full list of what every well-appointed home cannot do without, just in case an unexpected guest drops by ("a charming tea set," "a good hall mirror," and "a big metal bell with a lovely tone, to call people in from the garden for games or meals..."), and how to throw a dinner party--1940s style.
Fascinating book. In no time you'll be providing crisp stationery, fresh flowers, 700-thread-count sheets and a luggage stand for your weekend guests...and really, aren't those the "family values" that matter most?
A fun & inspirational read.......2004-11-08
If you're looking for some new ideas, as well as a peek into entertaining during the 1940's, you'll find a lot to enjoy in this reprint of Dorothy Draper's charming guide to entertaining. With an emphasis on simple, unpretentious planning, I think it was quite ahead of its time. This might make a good hostess gift!
