    Book Description

Globalization is characterised by persistent poverty and growing inequality. Conventional wisdom has it that this global poverty is residual - as globalization deepens, the poor will be lifted out of destitution. The policies of the World Bank, the IMF and the WTO echo this belief and push developing countries ever deeper into the global economy.Globalization, Poverty and Inequality provides an alternative viewpoint. It argues that for many - particularly for those living in Latin America, Asia and Central Europe - poverty and globalization are relational. It is the very workings of the global system which condemn many to poverty. In particular the mobility of investment, and the large pool of increasingly skilled workers in China and other parts of Asia, are driving down global wages. This poses challenges for policy makers in firms and countries throughout the world. It also challenges the very sustainability of globalisation itself. Are we about to witness the implosion of globalisation, as occurred between 1913 and 1950?Using a variety of theoretical frameworks and drawing on a vast amount of original research, this book will be an invaluable resource for all students of globalization and its effects.

          Book Description

"Deftly written . . . Patterson's book must now be considered the definitive Tsavo lion study... one of the world's leading experts on lions as well as an important conservationist."--Publishers Weekly

Through field research and forensic evidence, a scientist reveals his theory on why two Kenyan lions killed humans and then ate their prey

In March 1898, the British began building a bridge over the Tsavo River in East Africa. In nine months, two male lions killed and ate nearly 135 workers, halting construction.

After a long hunt Colonel J. H. Patterson killed the lions, which are now on display at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.

As codirector of the Tsavo Research Project, Bruce Patterson has conducted extensive fieldwork throughout the region on these lions. In The Lions of Tsavo, Patterson retells the harrowing story of those bloody nights in Kenya. He presents new forensic evidence on these maneless lions and argues that the man-eating behavior exhibited in 1898 came from the encroachment of human populations on wild habitats.

Patterson continues this theory by exploring man's interaction with the changing Kenyan environment, creating a complete, up-to-date, and scientific look behind this intriguing murder mystery.

          4 out of 5 stars Well Done.......2006-08-19

The author does an excellent job of making the subject matter readable for the layman. This is based on a series of scientific studies which are often laborius reading for most but it is presented in an easily understood form.

No definite conclusions are drawn but anyone with an interest in the big cats will find this a valuable source of information.

          4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2005-09-21

It is not the complete history of the how Col. Patterson killed the Tsavo Lions, but a very good and more recent report of a sciencific investigation trying to explain those animal's behavior and the causes that lead them to kill so many people.
          I found it very interesting.

2 out of 5 stars Informative and a shade biased.......2004-12-24

The book is filled with informative scientific hypothesis' about the man eaters. I found it to be very good reading until the the chapter when the author started bashing the hunters he had quoted through out the book. Throughout the world hunters are usually amoung the first to call for conservation of a species, not the enemy of conservation. Over all I would say the book is educational and worth reading just skip chapter 9 if you are a hunter.

5 out of 5 stars A passion for the big African cats..........2004-04-14

For all of us with a passion for the big African cats, this book is a must read. The author, B.D.Patterson, combines his years of field research with an obvious love of the African continent to produce a scientific yet readable and ultimately fascinating review of lion behavior, biology, and evolution.

Starting with an historical review of `man-eater lion' stories Dr. Patterson clarifies facts and debunks myths. He provides a comprehensive review of related factors - from dentition to drought - from game scarcity to human burial practices. No stone is left unturned as he investigates aggressive behavior where the territories of human and lion overlap (and there is aggressive behavior on both sides of this equation!!). He continues his analysis with a succinct review of the latest biological and evolutionary information of the Panthera genus, covering the latest findings in DNA studies, historical range analysis, behavioral studies, and much more. Finally, he concludes the book with a review of conservation efforts in the Tsavo region and plea for continued assistance for this increasingly endangered species.

Readers who are tired of the dumbed-down approach many authors follow in order to cater to the broadest audience possible will be presently surprised by this book. It is thoughtful and intelligent throughout - readable and enjoyable - give it a try.

          5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Study.......2004-02-11

Bruce Patterson's brilliant new book shines a much-needed scientific light on the lions of Tsavo. First made infamous by Colonel John Patterson (no relation to the author of this book), after he wrote "The Man-eaters of Tsavo" almost a century ago, and then re-introduced to modern audiences when the movie "The Ghost and the Darkness" came out in 1996, the lions of the barren East African region have been much speculated on. Their unusual physical characteristics and habits, including a reputed inclination to prey on men with greater frequency than other lions, have added to the interest about them.

Unfortunately, and somewhat surprisingly, little is known about the Tsavo lions. Are they a separate species from the lions found elsewhere in Africa or a subspecies? How does their social behavior differ from that of other lions? Why are the male lions of Tsavo typically maneless? Was the trait selected by evolution for some reason or determined by the tough physical environment of Tsavo?

Bruce Patterson, a naturalist with extensive experience studying these beasts, informs the debate on them to such a degree that even where he does not provide definitive answers to these questions about the lions - and he sometimes does -- he provides the definitive framework for understanding them. He approaches the creature from every angle. He has studied them in the field. He has worked on them in the laboratory. And he has extensively read both the scientific and popular literature on the lions.

Despite his impressive scholarship, Patterson is not afraid to tell the reader when he doesn't know something. He often writes that some area on the lions needs further study. I also appreciated how he took seriously what any source (white hunters, local tribesmen, etc.) had to say about the lions. Patterson does not snobbishly discount what a source says just because it was not written by a fellow scientist. He makes note of it in his ledger and considers it in the context of other information on the subject.

This is a delightful book. If you have any interest in lions in particular or big cats in general, you will find it fascinating and informative.

A barren and inhospitable region for most of the year, the Arctic is permanent home to just a handful of hardy creatures. But come the summer, the wind stirs the waters to bring minerals to the surface, nourishing the plankton that in turn attracts numerous birds and sea mammals to these shores. For just a few short months of almost endless daylight, the winter inhabitants of the Arctic fringes are joined by numerous shorebirds and waterfowl, seals and whales, all taking advantage of the abundance of food before heading south to avoid the harsh winter. Tony Soper's lively text provides the perfect companion to an exploration of the coastal regions of the Arctic and its inhabitants. Enhanced by specially commissioned watercolor paintings, this book will bring added insight to those visiting the Arctic in high summer, and lasting pleasure throughout the winter months. 5 out of 5 stars The Best .......2007-07-26

Absolutely THE BEST book (AND DVD) on the market on the subject of Emei style Baguazhang. I study under Mr. Wen-Ching Wu at The Way of The Dragon in Rhode Island and believe me he knows exactly what he is doing when it comes to Chinese Martial Arts. I rate this book a BEST BUY if you are interested in Baguazhang!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive book on Baguazhang.......2006-02-25

I have found this book to be the most comprehensive book on Baguazhang. It includes:

            * Baguazhang lineage.
            * Hundreds of pictures showing different forms and steps.
            * Demonstrates applications.

As good as it is I had trouble following the forms. It would have been better if there had been a circle marked on the floor to show orientation. Frequently the pictures are taken from different angles and this causes confusion as to which direction the practitioner is turning.

I would also strongly recommend getting the first two video tapes that go along with this book. Get the third after you have mastered the first two. Without the video tapes it is impossible to comprehend the fluidity and motion of Baguazhang.

I don't believe that it is possible to learn Baguazhang from a book alone, but this book makes a good compliment to lessons.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book Excellent Teamwork.......2004-01-22

For the general mass of Martial Artists who enjoy being pulled by the tail through their martial arts program, I have some advice to offer: don't get this book. If you are looking for a 'ba gua how to' book for dummies, then you're barking at the wrong door.
Dr. Yang and Liang combine to put together what may be considered a compilation of research on Baguzhang that will leave the reader both baffled as well as inspired. The 'theoretical' aspect is not to be trifled with here and NOT for the mere historian. It is for the martial artist through and through. Give it to the historian and you give it to the door. The theoretical aspects of the art as laid down by Dr. Yang in this book are absolutely essential to gaining a deeper understanding of why BaGua is what it is, and anyone who would preach differently simply has not understood what the martial art is or simply has not understood the theory. BaGua is, in some respects, a 'mental' art. Furthermore, the forms and sequences, the training aspects of the art, as given in the book are offered as a 'taste' of what the art is. One cannot possibly offer all aspects of the art in a single book and perhaps not in 10 volumes on the subject - it is just too enormous, and this should lead one to consider the fact that without theory, that is, without principles for the proper application of and study of an art, which is precisely what this book offers, together with the basic training materials and movements, it is impossible to develop and attain any degree of perfection. Perfection does not come through the leash, it comes through understanding and creative application of one's principles. This book will help those who are truly interested in learning, to learn. It is a guide to the art, offering thousands of years of research upon a single platter. That, in itself, should be enough reason for the dedicated martial artist to buy this book and to seek to understand its contents through and through.

5 out of 5 stars The beginning of a new art........2003-10-23

I have an intuitive feel from most the martial arts and sports I have practiced, so I will give from that in order to help.

I have a lot of instruction in the area of sports and martial arts. The one thing I have learned that has stayed with me is to give 110% in everything you do. This gives light to the fact that martial arts are work - and they require a lot of time and effort. Not only must one bust their butts during the class, but they must also bust their butts outside of class. Homework. All sports or martial arts require homework. Without this practice in the classroom will never improve. So basically your time, energy, and money are wasted. Remember this while searching for a teacher or coach.

This is a good book. There is no other book that is available in the U.S. that has the level of experience necessary to fully explain what some of the masters from China have written.

There are other good books, but none have translated ancient texts like Dr. Yang has done.

            -Calvin.

            4 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Overview.......2003-07-03

I have this book. I also own two of the tapes that go along with it. I'd agree with other reviews-- as comprehensive a history and lineage tree as you're likely to find (still incomplete, however, and some errors in lineage, too, but it's an impossible task). The forms as demonstrated in the video have a WuShu flavor to them, and the Eight Palms depicted seems to bear considerable resemblance to WuDang Ba Gua technique-wise and energy-wise, although the sequence appears out of order. Sequence and technique-wise, they strongly resemble Original Palms from Fu Family, but the energy of them in the video is WuShu.

I'd also agree with the opinons about applications-- too simple, pictures scattered about. Nice fundamental descriptions of movements in the form, but not a lot about internal work or energy mechanics-- the more advanced concepts inherent in the forms.

The translations of classic Chinese texts are invaluable-- but I'd like to point out to San Angelo, TX that a translation of "Sun Lu Tang's Study of Bu Gua Zhang" is available from Joseph Crandell's Smiling Tiger Publications, sold online at many internal martial arts websites.

Nice overview of Ba Gua, with a beginning, intermediate, and weapons form to demonstrate flavor. Short on applications
            or advanced body structure/energy work.

3 out of 5 stars Today's World Has Some Shortcomings........2005-11-23

Etiquette are the rules to apply toward others in public. When you work in the public sector, there are such a thing as manners and treating others as you want to be treated. In Sunday's local paper, there was an article "Do clothes still make the man -- or woman?" in which a former chief deputy clerk in the District Court gives accounts of how the judges treated jury members and defendants who were not properly dressed according to his wishes. Ties were required as was dress wear instead of just being clean and properly groomed. He bases his account on the 'Andy Griffith show' which still plays on local television, and used Amy Vanderbilt's GUIDE TO GRACIOUS LIVING about how to greet people on the street. Well, he is an older man, granted, but he does not follow his own advice. I saw him coming out of the History Center on the main street of town; when he acknowledged he knew me, he turned and walked around the block so as not to have to converse with me. He criticized the way people dress today in public and asks, "Whatever happened to class?"

According to this volume, which is a bit outdated but not as much as the Vanderbilt guide he used, a woman should dress according to her profession. Seeing a woman move up the ranks at the local transit system, going from old-fashioned denim dress with boots to cover the rest of her, to dressing like a common street walker, I had to make a comment, "You need to dress professional." Her boss, attired in orange pants and ball cap at a special "Meet the Manager" day, dressed down to what he perceived is the level of the riders; he asked me, "Do you think I should be wearing a suit?" and I merely said, "I will tell you what I did Ms. Pickle, "You should dress professional" if they want to receive the admiration of the public they are purportedly representing. The rudeness of some transit employees show their disrespect for the older person of different races and for their job. When we get on that bus, our lives are in the hands of these rude, surly, prejudiced persons who say derogatory remarks to and about passengers in front of others. They can refuse to stop to pick you up at their discretion, and they take advantage of that. It's not just bad manners. It shows how regressed a certain percentage of the population has become. They are ignorant and uneducated, and show it.

A man should never wear frayed shirt collars and cuffs no matter what the occasion is. I saw a local celebrity on the sidewalk outside his office with a torn place on his pants leg. Some people have no pride in their work or position in the community. Her advice: "Know who you are" and dress accordingly. In the Northeast, you must never wear white shoes and accessories after Labor Day, but that doesn't apply to the South.

A good rule for both sexes is to never dress in clothes that are too tight; they make a thin person look gaunt and a large person twice as heavy. There are people who are not interested in how they are perceived dress according to the weather and, even in public, wear ill-fitting casual wear. If they could just see themselves from the rear!

By all means, we need to smell good. I like her hand lotion but the perfume is too strong. Sometimes, riding the local buses, I have to put some of the lotion on a handkerchief and hold it to my nose, as the homeless and some others don't practice good hygiene. With the increase in rates, perhaps that smelly group of people won't be so prevelant.

5 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT Book.......2005-08-30

I am a friend of Mrs. Tuckerman and she worked really hard on this book. I read this book all the time. I use it for every occasion. Give these great ladies some credit, they want to be a little old fashined then it's thier choice. If you don't like this book then don't read it or buy it. I am a devoted fan of this book. Mrs. Tuckerman is the sweetest and coolest lady her age. I myself am a asipring writer ( I write fun news type stories).

3 out of 5 stars A disappointment, but still an authority.......2003-10-13

My mother has a copy of the original edition, so I grew up treating Vanderbilt's work as a constant reference for social graces. Naturally, I was overjoyed to learn that a new edition had made an appearance. Unfortunately, I was disappointed.

With no disrespect intended to Tuckerman et al for their fine work, this once-great guide is a shadow of its former self. It is no less accurate than it once was, but is unfortunately much more base. Do people really need to be told not to leave dirty dishes lying about, for example?

As a guide to minimal civilized behaviour--how not to behave like a spoiled child--it carries the tradition of excellence. However, for the finer points of etiquette, I strongly recommend tracking down a copy of the 1978 (Baldrige ed.) edition of this great reference.

            4 out of 5 stars Fight preventor.......2002-12-10

When in doubt, this is the book that comes out first. My husband and I pulled it out several times during our engagement to find out "how" we should do things. From setting the table to working with kitchen staff help this book has it all. (Now if I could just afford the staff!)

1 out of 5 stars Etiquette or Ignorance.......2002-03-29

I heard Ms. Dunnan's book advertised on the radio and considered purchasing it until I heard her interview, including etiquette excerpts from the book. Ms. Dunnan criticized the use of cell phones, stating that only people such as medical personnel, who may have "emergencies" should have cell phones. Many jobs today require people to be accessible 24 hours a day. While "emergencies" in other occupations may not be a matter of life and death, the stakes can still be very high.

Ms. Dunnan also feels it is rude for people with long legs to rest them on seats in front of them. Should people with long legs not go to a movie theater if they can't fit comfortably in one seat? Is it also rude for tall people to sit in front of anyone at theaters, concerts or parades?

Ms. Dunnan should limit her etiquette suggestions to topics of which she has a complete understanding. Her blanket statements and judgements are the foundation on which prejudice, racism and general intolerance of others are founded.

5 out of 5 stars Essential read for Americans that care about our freedom!.......2004-11-14

I highly recommend this book for any American that cares about our civil liberties. Mark Sidel does an excellent job examining the potential effects of anti-terror policies, including initiatives hidden in state legislations. He also investigates how anti-terror policies in the U.S. compare with anti-terror polices in other countries like the U.K., Australia and India. Americans that care about the freedoms that we hold dear should definitely buy and read this book. It will really inform you and make you think.

              Product Description

Written by UI Associate Professor of Law and UICHR Executive Board member Mark Sidel, this book is the first comprehensive analysis of U.S. antiterror initiatives implemented after the 2001 terrorist attacks. It goes beyond coverage of the Patriot Act, analyzing Total Information Awareness, the Terrorist Information and Prevention System (TIPS), the Computer Assisted Passenger Prescreening System II (CAPPS II), and a number of other "second wave" antiterror initiatives. Sidel takes readers behind the headlines to reveal how key provisions of controversial antiterror policies have been buried in state legislation, and how the military has taken over key police functions. More Secure, Less Free? also investigates aspects of American antiterrorism policy largely ignored in other books, including its effects on the American academic world and the nonprofit sector. Additionally, it provides the first international comparisons of antiterrorism policy yet published in an American volume, contrasting security initiatives in Great Britain, Australia, and India with the American experience.
