What's the truth about globalization . . . and what's just globaloney? Michael Veseth believes that much of what students understand about globalization is really globaloney-bombast built on a few vivid images and exceptional cases that distort more tha
Customer Reviews:
Good, but tries too hard to be fair to pro-globalization interests.......2005-10-30
The main thrust of this book is that both pro-globalization and anti-globalization interests tend to use overheated arguments not supported by much in the way of evidence. The book succeeds quite well at this and I recommend it on that basis.
The book doesn't address what in my opinion are the main reasons why globalization is a problem. The truth is that globalization is simply a fantasy based on cheap oil. Globalization is popular because the problems associated with the global production and transport of cheap goods, such as pollution and depletion of resources, are easier to ignore when the problems themselves can be moved across international boundaries. (Who cares if those weird foreigners poison themselves or cut down their own forests?) Sadly, an economy in which ordinary food items and other basic necessities are shipped for thousands of miles between producer and consumer is not an economy with a long-term future. In this context, I think that quibbling over which side of the debate uses the most misleading metaphors and anecdotes is a little silly.
Veseth also seems to accept without question the idea that expansion of an economy is a good thing. Veseth spends much time discussing some of globalization's success stories, such as the New Zealand wine export business. Veseth sounds a note of caution here, as he mentions the overexpansion of New Zealand vineyards--the usual result of a big success in the global market. Veseth doesn't follow this up by questioning whether expansion of global markets is desirable at all. If you read this book, I would recommend pairing it with some others to provide more perspective, such as Daly's "Beyond Growth" and Kunstler's "The Long Emergency".
Very Helpful Explanation of Why Globalization Doesn't Work.......2005-09-09
Globalization simply doesn't work.
It can't work.
Since adopting globalization, the USA has lost much of its manufacturing sector along with the decent paying jobs to off-shore suppliers.
But the third world countries have also lost as they are forced to play a game of beggar-thy-neighbor by constantly undercutting one another with lowrer wages and looser environmental protections.
This book explains why so many oppose globalization in steadily increasing numbers.

Book Description
There are three factors that determine the profits of an organization, but only one over which management has any direct influence: the behavior of the people in the organization.
From this book, managers will learn to:
- Assess the assets and liabilities of people quickly and accurately.
- Understand the motivations of subordinates, peers, and superiors.
- Appreciate the pervasive role of fear in driving the behavior of others.
- Effectively respond to disruptive, ineffective behavior by others.
- Evaluate the obstacles preventing a person from achieving their full potential.
- Give constructive feedback that results in overcoming these obstacles.
- Build a competent, cooperative, results-oriented team.
Throughout the text are practical exercises for the reader to engage in, which will effect specific behavioral changes in others, thus giving the reader the experience of using the principles in meaningful, real-life situations and, in effect, serving as a "virtual coach" for the reader. This is a practical guide to successful techniques that lead to readily observable, dramatic changes in the behavior of others.

Book Description
The conquest of aging is now within our grasp. It hasn't arrived yet, writes Michael R. Rose, but a scientific juggernaut has started rolling and is picking up speed. A long tomorrow is coming. In The Long Tomorrow, Rose offers us a delightfully written account of the modern science of aging, spiced with intriguing stories of his own career and leavened with the author's engaging sense of humor and rare ability to make contemporary research understandable to nonscientists. The book ranges from Rose's first experiments while a graduate student--counting a million fruit fly eggs, which took 3,000 hours over the course of a year--to some of his key scientific discoveries. We see how some of his earliest experiments helped demonstrate that "the force of natural selection" was key to understanding the aging process--a major breakthrough. Rose describes how he created the well-known Methuselah Flies, fruit flies that live far longer than average. Equally important, Rose surveys the entire field, offering colorful portraits of many leading scientists and shedding light on research findings from around the world. We learn that rodents given fifteen to forty percent fewer calories live about that much longer, and that volunteers in Biosphere II, who lived on reduced caloric intake for two years, all had improved vital signs. Perhaps most interesting, we discover that aging hits a plateau and stops. Popular accounts of Rose's work have appeared in The New Yorker, Time magazine, and Scientific American, but The Long Tomorrow is the first full account of this exciting new science written for the general reader. "Among his peers, Rose is considered a brilliantly innovative scientist, who has almost single-handedly brought the evolutionary theory of aging from an abstract notion to one of the most exciting topics in science."--Malcolm Gladwell, The New Yorker
Customer Reviews:
Good book to read, great with evolution .......2006-03-06
This book was amazing and awesome. You will learn a lot about aging from fruit flies. When I finished this book, I was surprised that a new author's first book was really good. I think biologist and scientist will enjoy this book.
Summary of What Causes us to Grow Old.......2006-01-22
Evolutionary biology attempts to explain how we age by looking at genes within our DNA that either allow or force our bodies to age. Unfortunately in nature's desire to populate the planet, it doesn't select for these genes as dominate. Nature makes us want to have offspring young. Just look at the teenage pregnancy rate.
Artificially we have learned that selective breeding in race horses, show dogs, prize winning cattle, and other animals have produced new animals with desirable traits. Dr. Rose's research used fruit flies to produce new generations that lived longer.
Could similar selective breeding in humans produced a longer lived race. Probably, but it would take centuries. Can we extend longevity through diet, drugs and medicine - yes, we already have, and are continuing to do so. Combining all of this, Dr. Rose has written a book that summarized the current state of knowlege in the field.
The science fiction readers of Robert Heinlein's Lazarus Long books reflect a similar story, the hero is the result of centuries of such breeding.
What we can learn about aging from fruit flies.......2005-11-11
This is mostly a memoir about Professor Rose's career as an evolutionary biologist who studies aging in fruit flies and extrapolates that knowledge to humans. The "Long Tomorrow" in the title refers to his belief that "it is still reasonable to hope that eventually the great mass of people will be able to control their aging through pharmaceuticals and medicine." (p. 134)
Rose sees senescence as being the inadvertent product of the evolutionary process. There is no single gene that controls aging. Instead hundreds of genes are involved so that the prospect of a single elixir or technique being developed that would magically postpone aging and death is highly unlikely. Almost as an aside and incidentally, Rose explains why we age and eventually die. His is the standard view that the evolutionary process becomes less and less in force as we get further and further from the onset of our reproductive age until "the force" (as he calls it) is not in effect at all.
This is a very tricky and subtle argument that takes a bit of reflection to fully understand. I know when I first encountered it some years ago I found it hard to follow. It is still very difficult to express. But let me give it a try.
Rose uses the analogy of Ford's Model T automobile. As the story goes Henry Ford wanted to know which parts of his cars almost never wore out. He found out what they were and directed his production staff to make them cheaper so that they would wear out at about the same time as the rest of the car, thereby making his cars cheaper to produce while increasing his profits without decreasing the longevity of his cars. Rose says that nature follows a similar parsimonious production with its organisms. For example, genes coded to allow a body part to last a thousand years would not be selected (or unselected for that matter). Indeed any gene or genes that code for processes lasting past reproductive age would exist in the genome only in a random fashion (if at all). Such genes would randomly appear and randomly die out.
What this means is that after the onset of reproduction everything begins to break down in a more or less random fashion. The environment acts upon us in a multitude of ways. Little insults pile up. Some cells go wildly reproductive and cancers develop. Other cells die due to something we ingested or because of accidents. Microorganisms use our tissues for their reproduction or subsistence (e.g., viral and bacterial infections). Toxicity kills off cells or changes their metabolism so that the cells no longer function properly. Arteries become clogged and blood fails to flow to some tissues which die of starvation...etc. Like Ford's Model T, first one thing goes wrong and then another until finally something stops us from running altogether.
Now, if we can fix one thing and then another and then another, our death can be postponed. If we become very, very good at fixing, death can be postponed for a long time. Such is the argument. The problem is that we are not really good at fixing things that go wrong with our bodies. Most of the fixing that takes place is through the body's own devices. Tissues are repaired, assaults to the skin patched up, bone tissues fused (after being set properly--that we can do). But we can't stop the growth of a cancer that has metastasized throughout the body without killing parts of the body itself. We can't repair a brain that has been deprived of oxygen for more than a few minutes. We can't regrow cartilage that has worn away. And so on.
So the "long tomorrow" will be gradual in coming and the length of that day will grow by small increments.
What I don't understand is this: why isn't the reproductive age of organisms itself indefinite? Or, to put the question another way, why should the young and inexperienced have a reproductive advantage over the old and experienced?
The answer appears to be almost circular in that because older organisms have bodies that are already beginning to break down, they are at a disadvantage to younger organisms whose bodies are in peak form. This is why members of the opposite sex (especially males) choose the young for mates. Or to be more precise, this is why the young are attracted to the young; indeed why all are attracted sexually to those at the peak of their reproductive lives. The young have a longer future and so will be better able to provide for their offspring. The fact that the opposite sex is biased in its choice further accentuates the reproductive advantage of the young.
For a more detailed explanation of why we age, expressed in a different way, see my review of The Biology of Death: Origins of Mortality (2004) by Andre Klarsfeld and Frederic Revah. The point is there is no one-sentence explanation of why we age. It's like trying to explain a complex process in a single phrase. It can't be done.
Those interested in Rose's career (and its ups and downs) and the nature of his work with fruit flies will find this interesting. But for the general reader this book is not the best for understanding why we age and die. There are a number of better books (none of them completely satisfying, by the way). In addition to the opus cited above, here are three others: Austad, Steven N. Why We Age: What Science Is Discovering about the Body's Journey Through Life (1997); Clark, William R. A Means to an End: The Biological Basis of Aging and Death (1999); and Hayflick, Leonard How and Why We Age (1994).

Better books Available.......2007-10-10
I was disappointed in this book. It uses very few ingredients, and just offers a number of variations on those ingredients. Also there is no explanation of why each ingredient has been chosen, which makes it difficult to substitute when necessary. I have a number of other pet-food books, and most of them are more useful.
Pet's health already improved!.......2007-09-10
After following the easy recipes in Dr. Strombeck's book for a month our 4 year old Cocker Spaniel's health has improved significantly! She has the energy of a puppy, her eyes are bright, she sleeps less, and she has fewer bathroom needs. Dr. Strombeck has written an easy to read book and includes his research and rationale for the ideas he proposes. He also includes recipes for pet health problems. The recipes take only a few minutes to prepare and the ingredients are easy to find. NOW Foods, Bone Meal Powder - 16 oz. Using beef or chicken broth to cook the rice or carbs in adds a lot of flavor. Our dog loves the food (even the tofu!) and cleans her bowl every meal. And I feel confident that she's getting all of the nutrition she needs. I highly recommend this book.
A HUGE difference within 1 week!.......2007-08-14
I was preparing a stew for my dogs in lieu of wet food, but still serving them commercial, organic kibble, which they would barely eat. I asked my vet about feeding them 100% home cooked meals and he recommended this book. It is an expensive book and I sort of felt like I need a refresher course in biology, chemistry and math, BUT after reading it a couple times in a quiet, distraction free room, and making notes as I read, I got it. The only complaint I had is the dog weights go in 10lb. increments and a 20lb dog does not get twice what a 10lb dog does, so figuring out a portion for my 12lb dog was kind of an educated guess, BUT I am amazed to report an HUGE difference in their coats in just one week. My 12lb. Boston Terrier has soft hair like when she was a puppy again and our 60lb. lab mix has shown a great improvement with her allergies. It is a little bit of work, but it is easy to cook for a week at a time and just add the oils & supplements daily. If you love your pet, can afford a slight increase in your weekly trip to the market and have the time to prepare the food, DON'T HESITATE.
Healthy Dose of Preventative Care.......2007-07-30
Lots of great recipes for cats and dogs, including special recipes for disease or allergies. Some ingredients are difficult to find, so search around. The book is written for a vet or someone in the industry, so it's not a simple petfood cookbook for your everyday animal lover. But it is pretty simple, really, just a collection of recipes.
If I were to remake this book, I'd:
- Organize the pages so there is only one recipe per page and no recipes were cut in half by a page change.
- Suggest where to find certain ingredients
- Give storage and serving information in the recipe, not the front of the book.
Probably the best guide available.......2007-05-31
Probably the best guide available for those who prefer to avoid commercial processed pet foods. Extremely detailed.

Must Have for any level bonefisher.......1999-09-16
Super book, many flies and recipes, how to tie them and how and where to fish them. Put this one on you bench.
All Fly Tying Books Should Be This Good.......1998-05-14
This book doesn't waste your time or money. Ever wonder what flies work where and how to tie those flies? This book tells you if you're going after Bonefish. It's to the point with great pictures, instructions and information that you can really use. Even if you don't fish for Bonefish, get this book. It will get you started.
Useful, concise, loaded with information........1998-03-06
I consider myself a novice fly-tyer, having resumed the hobby after a break of over forty years. I am getting ready to go to the Bahamas for a week and wanted to tie some bonefish flies. I have about four books on saltwater flies, many of which gave me some direction, but none hold a candle to this book which a good friend just gave me for my birthday. Excellent photography, over 150 fly recipes and pictures as well as chapters on basic tying techniques, innovations and trends, a useful glossary of materials and a chapter on locations, prey, depths, light and wind conditions as they relate to flies and presentations. Superb indexing and anecdotes. You can also easily cross-ref fishing locations with specific patterns. I'm looking for other books by this author. Can't wait to get to the weekend to put some of Mr. Brown's ideas to work. dd
Book Description
Puzzled about stuttering? If so, here is a book, written in clear, every-day language, that fits together the pieces of the stuttering puzzle as never before. The key to its approach is the Valsalva Hypothesis. This exciting new theory proposes that stuttering blocks may result from a neurological confusion between the voice and the Valsalva mechanism (which normally assists us in exerting effort and forcing things out of the body). The book demonstrates how physical and psychological factors may interact to stimulate and perpetuate stuttering through a "Valsalva-Stuttering Cycle."
The book sheds new light on virtually every aspect of stuttering behavior - its causes, its paradoxes (e.g., why it's worse in some instances but not others), and its many forms of treatment. Finally, it suggests an experimental self-therapy program, called Valsalva Control, aimed at controlling the Valsalva mechanism, breaking the stuttering cycle, and freeing the stutterer's inherent fluency.
Customer Reviews:
Have not read it all but look good.......2007-02-18
It is one of the good book I read eventhough the writer used more technical words that may not be easy for lay man.
thanks for the book.......2007-01-09
Good book. Gives a different perpective. Definately interesting for those who tries to see things deeply.
THE BEST BOOK OF ALL BOOKS!!.......2006-12-22
This book is amazing, i've read many other stuttering books, but this particular book is the best of them all. Mr.Parry explains everything about stuttering and of course the exercises on how to control stuttering, thats the best. Do you know why, because it works, and its something that you can control and master, not like other stuttering exercises which was a disaster.
All I can say that if you read this book you WILL know why it is the best, and why other books are just there to be read with no real good help.
Thanx (A excellent book by an excellent author.)
Twice Number ONE -- Excellent Book.......2006-10-01
I never knew exactly why I have been stuttering sometimes and not the other times until I read this book. After reading this excellent book,
I became aware of what my problem is and how I can try to control my stuttering.
This book is a wonderful gift and I highly recommend it to people who are having a speech problem.
Thank you very much William Parry for your great help.
What it takes to understand the Stuttering.......2006-07-26
If a stutterer goes by through life without ever hearing, purchasing or reading this book, chances are, he would have found
a comfortable "psychological" theory to back his impediment.
In the end of the day, though, this would do little to provide him with the necesary understanding as to why he blocks, why he can sometimes speak fluently, why he generally can't when it's most important and how to go about carrying the immense emotional bagagge which results from suffering from this affliction.
With this book, Bill Parry has explained all of this to us all in a way and style unimaginable until very recently due to all the obscurity and mistery surrounding the nature and occurance of speech blocks. Finally, the myth is broken and persons who stutter have a chance to develop their life from a foundation of self-esteem and self-respect.
This book also presents an author whose experience is shared with us without holding back his numerous frustrations and expressing his most sincere feelings about what was it like to live life as a stutterer. This is something few do, especially in this days of hypocrysy and reigning cynicism where everybody offers quick cures and/or worthless reads without any practical application. As soon as the "placebo" effect of most other therapies wanders off, reality strikes and our lives appear to be on the verge of breaking down again. The bottom line and what I want to share with all is the following points:
1) Stuttering is pervasive. It won't leave you alone one second of the day and consume your thinking.
2)Stuttering Kills. Stuttering will wreck havoc with your life,
your innocence, your dreams, hopes and ambitions. Stop pretending it doesn't or blaming yourself for being too "weak" to cope
3)Without a proper understanding of speech blocks, stuttering states and patience to allow changes to take place, we will never find conscious peace and libery, unless, of course, you live under dope as so many do.
Having said all this, I conclude expressing that I feel indebted
to life with Mr. Parry for his research, his work and his dedication for bringing about this book, the most important any
stutterer can read throughout his life.

Eastern Arctic Kayaks is the product of years of kayak study by two of the world’s experts. Combining analyses of form and function with historical background and illustrations of kayaking techniques, this volume is a storehouse of information for recreational kayakers and scholarly readers alike.
Drawing from his vast practical experience and extensive study of museum specimens, John D. Heath offers a comprehensive overview of the evolution and construction of Greenland kayaks supplemented with an illustrated series of rolling and sculling techniques. E. Arima examines kayaks of the eastern Canadian Arctic, covering woodworking tools, construction techniques, and the treatment of skins for the kayak cover.
Core chapters on Greenland and eastern Canada are accompanied by essential articles by Greg Stamer on the use of the Greenland paddle and two studies of kayaks in European museums by Harvey Golden and Hugh Collings. A valuable excerpt from John Brand's Little Kayak Book series makes this British publication available to American readers for the first time.
Lavishly illustrated with drawings and historic photographs, Eastern Arctic Kayaks is a landmark study in the history of watercraft--an essential resource for recreational kayakers and maritime historians and for anyone interested in northern Native material culture.
Customer Reviews:
A comprehensive overview of the evolution and construction.......2005-05-09
The collaborative work of the late John Heath (1923-2003) who was an acknowledged expert in kayaks, and the Canadian ethnologist E. Arima, Eastern Arctic Kayaks: History, Design, Technique combines informed and informative analyses of form and function with historical background and illustrations of kayaking techniques that will be of immense interest to recreational users of kayaks, as well as academics with an interest in Inuit and Canadian Arctic aboriginal culture. The reader is provided with a comprehensive overview of the evolution and construction of Greenland kayaks, supplemented with an illustrated series of rolling and sculling techniques. The definitive text includes woodworking tools, construction techniques, and the treatment of skins for the kayak cover. Superbly illustrated with historic photographs and expert drawings, Eastern Arctic Kayaks is especially recommended for readers with an interest in the history of watercraft and northern native material culture.
outstanding history and study of a type of kayak.......2005-03-29
The Arctic regions covered are the coastal areas of Greenland, Hudson's Bay, Baffin Island, and Labrador. Swedish kayaks are also examined for similarities in construction and for historical comparisons. The authors also went to museums in western and northern European countries to study kayaks at these. The authors--both with in-depth backgrounds on the subject--do a sound, detailed study on historical, present-day, and recreational kayaks. Heath especially was interested in the value of design elements and kayaking techniques of the oldest kayaks for today's recreational kayakers. For three decades, Arima has been an ethnohistorian with Parks Canada focusing on the Arctic and northwest coast of North America. Text, photographs, and detailed design drawings of kayaks work together in relating unique information on the different aspects of kayaks. While the material covers a broad geographical area and hundreds of years of kayak-making and use in hunting and transportation, one is struck by the remarkable ingenuity of the design of early kayaks; which has stood the test of time to be the basis for modern-day kayaks.
A 'Must Have' for any traditional paddler.......2005-02-10
This book is a wonderful collection of history, technique and lore about the Inuit qajaq found in Greenland and Canad's eastern Arctic. Anyone interested in these boats either as a historian, a builder or a paddler needs a copy on their shelf! The contributors are genuine experts both from the past as well as those involved in the revival of these very special boats.
