This book is great. It tells you exactly what the various economic series are, and how they are constructed - down to the fine gory details. I suspect this is the best such reference book available. If the author could produce an updated 3rd edition I would buy it immediately.

The Handbook of Key Economic Indicators clearly stands head and shoulders above competing texts in its depth. The first thing I like about this book is that it provides detailed information on important data series and is an invaluable resource to those tracking the nearly daily release of non-financial data. In addition to providing the necessary methodological background for each indicator, the work explains how to interpret each indicator and specifically suggests what to look for when analyzing data reports. I also found that the explanations of the numerous potential sources of monthly volatility are extremely useful- the explanations are clear indications of the author's extensive experience with the data. I was glad to see the Handbook isn't just a rehash of the first edition--it is very current and includes important new sections on the 1996 Boskin Report, the 1998 revisions to CPI (including the impact on inflation growth rates), and the switch in real GDP to a chained dollar basis and how one works with the new data. What I like about this book is that it not only covers the basics in news release interpretation that market analysts want but also that it is an excellent reference for researchers who need a thorough understanding of the major non-financial economic indicators. What sets this work apart is that it has the depth and coverage of methodologies and special topics that similar texts do not have. For the analyst or researcher working with these complicated and often misunderstood data series, I would highly recommend this book!

R. Mark Rogers has written a comprehensive, thorough overview of the key U.S. economic indicators. His book would be particularly useful for analysts new to the business, or to seasoned analysts who need to know more about the nitty gritty behind the numbers. Rogers' handbook is filled with more technical information that some people will ever need, and some will find the level of detail intimidating and somewhat cumbersome. However, the compilation of all this information in one source is extremely valuable, and is particularly useful for those who want a deeper understanding of what the economic data say. The level of technical sophistication is what sets this book apart from others. For those who want to understand more about U.S. economic data than the sound bytes on the news or the quotes in the paper provide, this is the book to read.
Comprehensive, very technical, but NOT user friendly........1998-08-23
This work is highly technical. It provides the genesis and sources for all the leading U.S. economic indicators. A dweeb's delight - however it lacks meaningful illustrations. A few charts were provided, but - like the dismal science, the actual text, tables, and raw data are dull, drab, and unimaginative. For my money, a far more "user-friendly" overview is necessary. This book needs some meaningful graphs, colorful illustrations, and an anectode or two. It could have been made far simpler, and easier to understand. As is, the book has only limited value - especially to the investing public. It's a shame the author went to all that work compiling a bunch of data, but, like most dweeb economists, he doesn't effectively communicate.

Rethinking how modern science is done.......2002-11-12
In THE DIALECTICAL BIOLOGIST, Levins and Lewontin take a Marxist dialectical approach to examine the way and shape of contemporary biology. Not that I fully understand this approach, it does raise some intriguing critiques about the influence of the biotech-industrial complex and how groupthink and intertia of academia enforces dogma. I particularly liked the "Isadore Nabi" piece and the essay on agri-business.
As a working scientist, I think it is important to think and rethink the Big Picture of why and how we do what we do. THE DIALECTICAL BIOLOGIST addresses a few particular questions of ways of modern biology.

This is an excellent book that will entertain people from all walks of life. Butz does an excellent job of playing the role of "true reporter", and definitely doesn't play favorites in this book. He tells the saga of cougars in Michigan as he sees it. The truth can be painful, and Butz's pen dishes it out to all of the major players involved. The MWC, DNR, and CN all take their fair share of lashings. On the other side he gives them credit where credit is due.
Butz draws you in as only a real life detective can, and holds your full attention to the very end of the book. Those that are new to the controversy of mountain lions living in Michigan will have the entire saga laid out before them. Seasoned veterans who have been following the battle for years will learn many new facts about the evidence of growing puma populations that exist in Michigan and other places in the east.
Many readers, that are looking for "the answer", may come away from the book as frustrated as they were before they read it. This frustration seems to stem from the fact that the fuel feeding the controversy is pure political fodder, and has little to do with the simple question of whether or not pumas exist in Michigan and the rest of the eastern states. There are still many questions left unanswered, but the book clears up the major points. The reader is left to form their own opinion about the status of cougars in Michigan which is still definitely up in the air. If you are interested in cougars in the eastern USA this is an absolute must read!

For more than one hundred years, ever since cougars were pronounced extinct in the eastern US, people have continued to report sightings. Since the 1970s, many have become intrigued with these reports and have attempted to document them with evidence such as tracks, photographs and more recently, with remote camera pictures, hair samples, and scats, which can be identified by DNA analysis. A few confirmations have been logged in the northeastern US and eastern Canada.
One state which seems to have more than its share of evidence is Michigan, although no dead bodies have showed up yet. Late in 2001, Dr. Patrick Rusz, biologist for the private Michigan Wildlife Conservancy (MWC), released a report summarizing this evidence and began to search for more. In November, he announced that he had discovered tracks, deer kills, and scats characteristic of cougars on the north shore of Lake Michigan. Later, he found more scats on Michigan's Lower Peninsula.
The announcements set off a whirlwind of controversy. Does Rusz have evidence or doesn't he? The author is an outdoor writer who lives on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. For three years he accompanied Rusz on field trips. Butz also considers the possibility of cougar survival elsewhere in the East. It does seem that there is valid evidence in Michigan, but Rusz and the MWC have made major mistakes that have undermined their credibility.
Butz concludes that amateurs searching for evidence will never be successful in persuading recalcitrant state wildlife agencies to protect cougars. Nor will a purely scientific approach. It's a political matter as much as anything else.
Meanwhile, there is undoubted proof that cougars are extending their range from the Rocky Mountains and Black Hills eastward. Recently two crossed the Mississippi River into Illinois. Their appearance has been greeted a mixture of delight and unwarranted fear.
Butz' book is a good read. I recommend it to anyone who is excited about the return of wildness to the eastern United States.

Good Book.......2001-04-13
This book is really good. It taught me more than I've ever known about the game. The short game section isn't very detailed, but he takes you step-by-step into developing a good swing that you can repeat. He covers all the areas in which a golfer should work( long game, short game, mental game, and course management game). I would reccomend this book to anyone who wants to tone up there skills and improve.

wow, this is definately the best teaching book that i have ever read. If you are a beginner or a skilled golfer just needing a tune up on your game, definately get your hands on this one. McLean works on all swing mechanics as well as your mental golf game, in my opinion, he covers every part of the game that might be troubling you. also helpful in this book are the many step-by-step pictures visually showing the correct and incorrect ways of certain steps.

BAD! Wow; this man gets plenty of press and great reviews, but I cannot see why! The book is written at a grade eight reading level, and it does not state anything new. In fact, this author understates everything. Books and videos by Dede Owens, Sam Snead, and Jack Nicklaus will give you more and cost less.

Poorly Organized and Researched.......2007-07-22
I had high hopes for this as a branch off of the Writer's Market, since most of what I submit to are magazines (big and small). While there is an outpouring of information, are listings for publishers that only print one author and accept 0% of manuscripts submitted helpful (and there are quite a few of these)? Some of these listings haven't been updated for the past 7 years or so ("Not accepting unsolicited manuscripts until 2000"), and one wonders what information the editor was getting (one small press, according to the book, published travel guidebooks and travelogues, however on their website they are a transgender studies publisher).
For the cost, I'd say stick with the Writer's Market. It may have fewer listings, but they are better presented, are well researched, and lead to more positive (and profitable) outcomes.

What better choice than this text? They're few and far between. A good source is always good to have, but a GREAT source like this is even better--!!!! I highly recommend this book~~!!!!!!

What's all the fuss about?.......2007-05-31
I bought Straits of Power at the airport for a cross-country flight; man, I wish I could get my money back.
This is one of the most poorly written techno-thrillers I've ever picked up. The writing is completely ham-handed; you find out right away that a character can't be trusted, because Buff can't wait to tell you. Nothing develops, it just happens. As one other reviewer pointed out (while wiping drool off their techno-thrilled lips), Buff's German/Boer Axis is completely improbable and unbelievable, as is the idea that Americans (and Europeans!) would give up cell phones in the name of national security. Yeah, yeah, it advances the plot: give me a break. It's really so Buff doesn't have to get up to speed on telecommunications and can mine old spy novels for tradecraft ideas.
Every page I read had the air of Buff leaning over my shoulder, breathing heavily and nudging me: "Didja get it, didja get it? See, the guy from the CIA is from Harvard, and he can't be trusted, because he's not a real fighting man, he's condescending, but you know what, you know what? He's going to get his, when -- well, you'll see." This book is so obvious and clumsy it's painful.

Futuristic Submarine Warfare at its FINEST!.......2007-01-14
I have read all of Joe Buff's books todate and he has a great imagination and a superb grasp of Submarine Tactics.This book is a bit of a departure from his other storylines as the center of the story is story of espianage and spycraft as Commander Jeffery Fuller takes the CHALLENGER into the Mediterranian a bastion of Axis power to extract a defector from Turkey with information that may save Israel from sudden attack and stop the Axis powers from siezeing control of the Middle East and the worlds oil supply chokeing the Allies into submission.
Also the love story between Fuller and Ilse Reebeck is still in limbo as they serve seperatly(He aboard his Sub and her at the Pentagon) and are only in company at the begining of the book at a staff meeting.But there is a secondary story running in this book about Reebeck.She is under investigation by the FBI as a double agent for the Axis Powers and in a shocking ending is arrested and charged with espianage and may face execution! A definate leadin to another novel for the characters!!

I just finished the book and thought it was just OK. Nothing special, and not good enough to recommend to friends.
Cons:
I thought the last 1/4 of the book covered a lot of ground without the detail that was provided in the rest of the story.
I liked that the story covered a lot more than just underwater fight sequences, but I think the scope was a little too big to be covered convincingly.
Pros:
The techno portion of techno-thriller was very good. I enjoyed all of the technical details.
The story was interesting, even though it was a bit fragmented.
Options:
Instead of this book, I'd recommend Larry Bond's Dangerous Ground (the best sub book I've read since Clancy's The Hunt for Red October, still my all-time favorite sub book.)
This Man Can Write.......2005-12-16
It took me a few pages to warm up to Joe Buff. The date of this story being told is 2011. Now, I don't know about you, but I have a hard time believeing in the premise of this story, i.e. that the world is going to be confronting Germany and S. Africa as the new Axis powers and that there is a real shooting war brewing over it.
OK, a hundred or so pages past that premise I was turning the pages because Mr. Buff can flat out write. I have not read any of the foregoing novels he has written, but I understand this is a story that is based on sequels. This book is stand alone, but may be more interesting if read seriatum.
In any event, it is worth your time to read it. Good stuff!

SIR JULIAN STAFFORD CORBETT (1854-1922) was a prominent British naval historian and geostrategist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, whose works helped shape the Royal Navy's reforms of that era. He also wrote The Campaign of Trafalgar, The Seven Years War and Some Principles of Maritime Strategy, which remains a classic among students of naval warfare.
