Book Description
In recent decades, growing numbers of researchers have been drawn to the rich and highly threatened biotic diversity of the Neotropics, where mammals are among the most difficult animals to observe and study in detail. Mammals of the Neotropics fills the need for a comprehensive, up-to-date survey of existing knowledge of the area's wild mammals, both terrestrial and marine. This first of three planned volumes covers the northern Neotropics, including southern Central America.
John Eisenberg, a leading researcher of Neotropical fauna, begins the volume with a discussion of historical biogeography and contemporary habitats of the northern Neotropics. Each of the chapters that follow presents a mammalian order, with data for all indigenous species. Eisenberg has provided physical descriptions and summaries of range and habitat for nearly 450 species. For those species that have been studied in the field or in captivity, additional notes on natural history are included. For the larger taxa, field keys to help to identify the specimens. Range maps, line drawings, and color plates supplement the text, further aiding identification.
Throughout the book, Eisenberg provides a larger context for the species descriptions. He comments on the diversity of forms within each order, places the Neotropical species in a worldwide geographical perspective, and reviews taxonomic questions and controversies. At the end of each chapter, an extensive bibliography directs readers to related articles on systematics, behavior, ecology, and evolution. Eisenberg concludes with chapters on speciation events and mammalian community ecology.
No comparable account of South and Central American mammals has ever been published in any language. This volume of Mammals of the Neotropics and the forthcoming companion volumes will be an invaluable reference for students and professionals and will help further the research that is so vital to conservation efforts.

Customer Reviews:
Another gem from Dr. Yang, Jwing Ming and David Silver.......2006-11-17
For those of you who have struggled to obtain correct and lucid information on Qigong Meditation, then this is one of a series of books that will lead you in the right direction. As those who are familiar with Dr. Yang's publications, the book is written in a style that is accessible and accurate. Much of the previous material available in English was short on explanation and long on symbolism and obscure terms that seemed to have no clear interpretation.
Dr. Yang possesses an incredible history, with a background in martial arts combined with an unceasingly inquisitive, curious and intelligent mind. His goal, as I understand it, to make available accurate and true information on various martial arts styles, is commendable, to say the least.
The book presents a wide range of information, with the following sections:
Chapter 1 General Concepts
Chapter 2 Theoretical foundations
Chapter 3 Four Refinements
Chapter 4 Five Regulatings
Chapter 5 Theoretical root of Small Circulation
Chapter 6 Embryonic Breathing
Chapter 7 Important Points in Meditation
Chapter 8 Small Circulation Meditation Practice
Chapter 9 Questions and Possible Human Future
Chapter 10 Conclusion
Chapter 6, Embryonic Breathing, is not a complete study of the subject. As Dr. Yang mentions in the book, the reader would be advised to purchase the book Embryonic Breathing and study it, preferably before beginning this book, or at least the chapter on Embryonic Breathing. It is an excellent book and provides the student with a solid understanding of the role of breathing in Meditation and qigong.
As the capable and talented editor David Silver mentions in the Editor's Note, some of the readers might already be familiar with some of the chapter topics. However, although it might be tempting to skip these chapters, especially if one had already read some of Dr. Yang's previous coverage of the topics, the reader would be well advised to read the book in its entirety. A true scholar, teacher, or any member of any profession, should constantly be trying to improve and correct their understanding of their relative field. Dr. Yang is one of these true scholars and his explanations continue to grow and improve with time. As David mentions, fundamental training is the heart of any system and should never be skipped, regardless of one's skill level.
It's amazing to me that what seems the most complicated at times can actually be simple once it is understood, and what seems on its face value to be simple in nature is at its heart complex. I think of the saying, "find stillness in movement and movement in stillness". Just as in the Yin Yang symbol, each of the two opposites have the seed of each other. Such is the nature of meditation. I used to believe that there couldn't be very much to know in order to practice meditation. Yet, when one looks at the size of this book, coming in at 402 pages, it is obviously a subject of great depth.
Thank the Taiji gods for Dr. Yang and his numerous contributions to the martial arts world. Along with this book, I would recommend to the serious student to purchase Dr. Yang's DVD titled "Understanding Qigong". As I began to watch the DVD, I found that I couldn't turn it off until it was complete. Although I have read numerous books on Qigong, including all of Dr. Yang's publications, as well as practiced Qigong for many years, I found that watching Dr. Yang talk brought a level of understanding that I had never before achieved. I was amazed at how effective he is as a classroom teacher. It is truly an excellent companion to the study of Meditation.
I have not yet met Dr. Yang in person, although I have talked to him on the phone on a couple of occasions. When I do finally meet him, I will probably find myself bowing to him and stating "I am not worthy". And I mean that with the most respect. If you mediate already or are interested in learning about qigong meditation, then this is most likely one of the best books available on the subject.
An excellent guide for western readers to the practice of Qigong style mediation practiced throughout Asia.......2006-06-04
Qigong is a form of meditation and stylized exercise that has its roots in Buddhism. Qigong Meditation: Small Circulation by Chinese martial arts and Qigong expert Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming is an excellent guide for western readers to the practice of Qigong style mediation practiced throughout Asia. Expertly providing readers with the basic concepts underlying this form of meditation for the improvement and control of personal energy circulation, Qigong Meditation offers an in-depth and practical understanding of the fundamentals for its revitalizing and energizing practices. A core addition to Qigong, meditation, martial arts, Buddhist Studies, and Eastern spirituality reference collections, Qigong Meditation is very strongly recommended for readers seeking to practice Qigong meditation.
Dissapointed.......2006-05-30
I was dissapointed with this book. I expected much more from a whole book devoted to small circulation. It gives you the impression that Yang never learned small circulation meditation from an actual teacher, but seems to have picked up techniques from ancient writings. Only a very small portion of this book is devoted to the actual practice of small circulation, the rest is translations of others writings and qigong theory which is included in his other books. Overall, I think there's some good info, but I found Qigong Empowerment by Shou Yu Liang to be much better.
The highest five hearts score........2006-05-16
The author, a physicist and engineer, is undoubtedly the most knowledgeable expert on Chinese martial arts and internal energy systems in the Western world. In this incredibly well-illustrated and documented tome on qigong (chi kung) meditation, Dr. Yang provides in-depth information as to what internal energy is, how it works, how to safely develop it, and its importance to health. In this reviewer's experience with the fighting arts for over fifty years, this is absolutely the best, most complete book on the subject I have seen. Dr. Yang should be considered a national treasure by both China and the US. No one else has the breadth or depth of his knowledge, the scientific understanding of it, and the ability to explain its innermost secrets while transcending an allegorical Oriental knowledge base to a scientific Western one. We rated this book the highest five hearts score.

Customer Reviews:
Great Introductory Course.......2007-04-11
I have had this set for quite a while, it provides a great introduction to french, starting with common phrases and growing up as one progress. I would recommend this set, but it's always useful to have at least two complementary audio courses, plus reading french and watching movies in french.
Good for travelers.......2006-11-04
The Oxford Take Off in French book and CD's are a great way to introduce yourself to the French language, but not a good was to learn the details that are important for eventually living in a francophone country. The series is definitely a conversational language course which is great if you are going to travel in France. Some of the topics covered include eating at a restaurant, talking about a house, telling someone if you aren't feeling well and talking about your hobbies and work. What I really wanted, and maybe I shouldn't have expected from this series, was step by step grammar instruction and pronunciation techniques. There is a grammar review in the back of the workbook that I used more than the actual book. Overall I give this language course 4 stars because it does what it claims to do....give you a start in French and it does that very well.
Quite Doable and Enjoyable as Well.......2004-10-20
I have got through the first 2 of the 4 CDs (there's also an extra, 5th CD for more practice) and have really enjoyed the learning process. I find the dialogues really help me to learn how to pronounce French words and speak conversationally as real people do. They throw a lot of new words and grammar at you in the form of 2 or 3 person dialogues, rather than leading you through in a more traditional, words by word, sentence by sentence manner. I have enjoyed this, because it really does get one started speaking quickly. I have been practicing with a friend that studied French in college, and they are quite amazed at my progress.
The proof was going to Paris last month for work. Even though I was still very much a beginner, I found that my learned pronunciation was quite good - almost too good because people started speaking to me in French! I would love a follow-on course so that I could learn more advanced and longer material.

Book Description
New Mexico State Police Officer Lee Nez is a nightwalker, a Navajo vampire. Thanks to the quick work of a Navajo shaman, Lee can walk about in the day and prefers his blood refrigerated-but his vampire nature makes him a magnet for other supernatural entities. Take his current cases. Lee suspects that the vampire who created him during World War II is back in the US, searching for a cache of stolen plutonium. And Lee's being stalked by the remnants of a pack of skinwalkers-Navajo shapeshifters-who are literally out for his blood. When the FBI shows up, in the person of the very attractive Diane Lopez, Lee's problems only increase. He can't tell Diane that the case she's looking into involves skinwalkers or that its his supernatural abilities that make him such a great cop. And teaming up with Lee could be very hazardous to her health.
Customer Reviews:
Second Sunrise: A Lee Nez Novel.......2006-09-01
This is the first book in a series of three--so far. Lots of Navajo culture and
beliefs are incorporated into an exciting mystery based in New Mexico. Authors
write in a pleasing manner. You forget about your problems when you become
involved in this great read.
Good entry into the genre.......2006-02-17
This book introduces us to a Navajo police officer who is turned into a vampire by an evil Nazi. His condition is mitigated by a "medicine man" who dilutes the "virus" that causes vampirism. This vampire detective follows the footsteps of such vampires as Nick Knight, but isn't burdoned with guilt. That is a nice change.
His partner is a strong, competent woman, who is so without being "over the top" and unbelievable.
Personally, this was one of the few books I have recently read that I had trouble putting down. I would recommend it. It had action, adventure, romance.
A Good Introduction.......2005-06-23
I enjoyed reading Second Sunrise. It introduced the characters, who are interesting, and set up the reader for the second book. I look forward to the rest of the books in this series.
Fresh Twist on Vampires But Doesn't Cut It.......2005-01-08
Second Sunrise is a new serial by the Thurlo team. They have over 30 books to their credit. I am not sure what happened here.
Second Sunrise begins on a dark night in the secluded hills of Fort Wingate, New Mexico, when state patrolman Lee Nez's life is forever altered. Lee and his rookie partner Benny interrupt a military ambush massacre. Benny is murdered and Lee is mortally injured. Lee wakes a new man, a nightwalker, which apparently is the Navajo word for vampire.
The story jumps to sixty years later. Lee continues to search for the nightwalker who transformed him and to fend off the skinwalkers who want the immortal properties of his blood. Skinwalker is a term for Navajo witches able to shapeshift into wolves.
Just when you thought that every vampire story had been told, the Thurlos come out with a fresh twist. Second Sunrise is no Dracula and the Thurlos are no Bram Stoker. I love vampire stories. I didn't like this book, at least not as a whole.
There was much about the story that I enjoyed. The supporting character FBI Agent Diane Lopez is strong, confident and can hold her own despite the gravity of the situations in which she finds herself. The premise of Navajo magic and the ancient history behind it and its people is intriguing and well presented, describing cultural cues like finger pointing and waiting outside to be invited in.
Unfortunately, I found the first chapters slow and tedious. From the jacket cover I already knew someone was going to die and that Lee would become a nightwalker. This section took too long to get to the point. Throughout the novel there was a lot of telling going on. Too much time was spent talking about personality traits instead of showing them through actions. This made it difficult to connect with the lead character positively or negatively, therefore there was no emotional involvement with him, his life or his actions.
Second Sunrise was overly repetitive. Benny's death and the young bride and infant son he leaves behind are mentioned four times in the first 83 pages. Totally unnecessary and irritating. The story isn't so involved that the reader wouldn't remember a driving force such as this. There are many other instances of this kind of repetition.
The language reflected this redundancy, with overused phrases, unnecessarily mundane details, and facts pointed out to the reader evident within the scene. All these details make it seem as though readers have short attention spans.
I believe this could have been an exciting addition to the vampire genre. I just think it was released too soon. So much more could have been done with it. It needs to be tidied up. Perhaps it would have helped to have the point of view in first person. If you want to read a different twist on the vampire story then pick this up but if you want a gripping tale with believable characters you can sympathize with and be moved by, this isn't it.

This book tumbled out of my hands and hit the floor about the point that the female FBI Agent and the female Vampire began to insult one another about their respective weights. That has to be a new low in vampire fiction. The other times the book fell out of my hands was because I could no longer keep my eyes open as Nez and Lopez have long pointless conversations with the occasional coy romantic comment. I think that the FBI agent who was killed early in the book got off easily compared to those of us who stayed to the end.
The authors cannot resist hopping on every new bandwagon that goes by, unfortunately they forget to get off the old bandwagons. Therefore, in this book we have a female FBI agent out to avenge her dead partner, skinwalkers (sort of Navaho Werewolves), German vampires, and a Navaho vampire state cop also out to avenge his dead partner (who was killed in 1945). All of the characters are one dimensional at best.
The skinwalkers are inherently evil and hunt vampires for no discernable purpose except the authors needed some action to propel the story to its next stage. The German vampires are equally purposeless except they want to get their hands on a case that might (no one really knows for sure) contain uranium or plutonium or something radioactive-- so much of this book is just two characters who have no facts engaging in fruitless speculation.
Let's not forget the writing. There is a lot of telling and not showing with strange moments of exposition that make me think that the authors had suddenly thought of something they should have mentioned earlier, so they jam it into the conversation whether it feels natural-- if any of the conversation in this book seems natural-- or not.
I think I should say something positive about the book, though. The dust jacket on the hard cover is rather clever and unusual. Shame it couldn't be on a better book.
