A great guide to dealing with change.......2001-03-11
I got more out of this video than I have out of many expensive seminars and conferences I have attended. It's a terrific guide to dealing with change and turning it into opportunity. Drucker and Senge offer insightful observations about the how to prepare for the future. I showed it to a group of colleagues at a company off-site and it helped generate a great discussion. There's a workbook that I used to guide the discussion, and a lot of really good insights throughout the video.

"Modeling for Learning Organizations" builds off of the extensive experience of top professors and consultants using the SD tools to test strategies and build an understanding of firm and industry dynamics.
"Modeling" also includes a section overviewing the various simulation software packages available to modelers. Though developers like High-Performance Systems, Vensim, Pugh-Roberts, and PowerSim have made product enhancements to date, the sections from each company provide a great introduction to what is out there how each package can be applied.
The most valuable aspect of the book is probably in the case studies and methodological explorations of several authors. A number of key insights are offered as authors reflect upon the successes and shortcoming of the methods each chose to use to explore and develop models in a variety of business and public environments.
This is definitely a must have for any SD library.

This volume focuses on how writing is produced both during the moment-to-moment process of inscribing a text and during real time broadly conceived as the context for studying the writing process as writers plan, draft, revise, and confer with others. The chapters break open these generic categories by studying special populations of writers not studied before, by specifying the writing environment, by developing more detailed models of the writing process, and by offering critical analyses of current research methods and paradigms. In a renewed climate of educational need such as we are now experiencing, research on writing processes can contribute an important piece to the puzzle of effective instruction. Theories of instruction ought to be integrated with theories of learning and both must incorporate knowledge about writers' processes. The chapters in this volume move toward such a view of research on writing.

Take the chapter on energy and its explanation of ATP, a.k.a. the conversion of light energy into chemical energy. The metaphor is dance, with an illustration showing electrons as jitterbuggers in the Chloroplast Ballroom. The text explains that
as the lights spin and the band breaks into "Sugar Jump," the dancers go wild. Suddenly a bystander inspired by a couple on the floor gets dancing feet. This in turn excites a second bystander to dance and before long a chain reaction takes place, each new dancer energizing the next bystander.
It's a brilliant start to a lucid explanation of a subject that plunges many a biology student into a panic, here made so readily accessible that readers, ages 10 to 100, can come away with a working mental model of the process. And so it goes for division of cells, DNA double helixes, fermentation, and the adaptation of genes. Hoagland and Dodson have succeeded in producing that most beauteous of reference books, the resource that makes you interested in what you had thought was dull as dishwater, then, once you're hooked, raises your understanding to a high standard of comprehension. Biology concepts explained.......2005-08-16
The illustrations and text are so clear at explaining the concepts of biology that I recommend this book to everyone I know with a high school kid. I used this as my basic text for a class for homeschoolers on cell biology. My little geek daughter has read and reread this book from the age of 8 or 9, and at the age of 12 (with some other study) got a 750 on the SAT II Biology test. Hoaglund really knows how to explain life science. I especially recommend the section explaining how life staves off entropy to allow building of complexity. I learned more from this little book than from high school Biology.

Style is awesome!. The graphics and analogies are so well done that almost anybody without previous biology knowledge can get the full picture of the basics (and even some level of detail) of molecular and cell biology after reading this book. The level of abstraction is so good that sometimes I had to stop to think about what I read to get the real dimension that the writers wanted to expossed. It is a real master piece describing life (as life and not as an specific species) in its full dimension. Congrats to the authors!, I have read so many books, but I can't remember one with such an in depth, simply and universal style. That book is worth far more than the $20 I paid for it.

This is a great book with all kinds of images to examine and color. My grandson learned a lot using this book.

My friend wanted these books so I added them to my order and thought I would take a look at them and decide then if they were something we would use in our homeschool nature study. They are basically coloring books with some general field guide information. I think they are nicely done but I prefer the real field guides and actual nature with my kids and their own sketch books. I think it's better for us to draw from our own experience, literally, and improve as we work at it and mature than just staying in the lines. You would need a regular field guide in order to get the coloring right anyway.

This is a good guide to be used in conjunction with the Kays and Wilson guide (a much more recent and complete book). It has not been updated in quite some time, but the information should not be dismissed. It works, but should not be your only mammal field guide. You will be disappointed if it is.

Most of this book is a listing of some whale watching companies with litte infomation of real value. Which ones are good? No information about that. But there is information if their boat serves food, which they almost all do. Plus this information is old. No good pictures and no quality information about whales. I was completely disappointed in this suppossed "5 star" book. Don't buy this book -- do searching on line instead.

As a Humpback whale and elected leader of our pod I would like to say have a little decency and go stare at your own species for crying out loud. Don't we have enough stress in our lives wondering when the next one of us is going to get a harpoon stuck in his bladder? How would you like it if a bunch of us whales piled into a minivan and followed you and your family around? Gawking at you and your offspring as you stand in line for your happy meals or doing what ever your brutish species does. Doesn't sound like so much fun now does it?
Go fiddle with the banana slugs or mimes, nobody likes them anyway.

These pieces of short humor about the outdoors are truly some of the best I've ever read. I've never laughed as hard or as long at any other stories, and the fact that these are all adventures that actually took place is what puts them over the top.
Strickland's writing style is professional, yet very conversational. It's as though he were in the room with you, telling the tales one after another until, out of breath and wiping tears of laughter by the handful, you beg for mercy.
Anyone who's ever spent any time in the outdoors will love this book. I bought one for my dad as a gift and, after reading the first story, had to order him another one. This is one volume my bookshelf won't be without.

Even if you have never been turkey hunting, I am not sure that this is the place to start. There are a few good hints and tips, but much better information than what is provided in this book can be found all over the internet. The picture quality was poor, some of the advice was questionable, and the writing style wasn't highly entertaining. There has got to be a better How To book out there on the subject of turkey hunting.

I have read How To Turkey Hunt, twice. I have found it to be a wonderful book that made me feel that I could pick up a gun and march right out into those woods and grab me a turkey. That is of course if I was a hunter. If you are interested in learning how to turkey hunt, or even to expand your knowledge I recommend this book to you.

Good information - bad pictures.......2006-02-24
This book offers thorough information about search and rescue work as well as tips for picking, training and handling your SAR dog. Even though it has some nice drawings of SAR work and -dogs from Nina Bondarenko the photographs are bad and quite old. My issue is the fifth printing, published in 2002 and it would have been nice if some recent photographs of better quality could have replaced the original ones from 1994.
All in all a very good and informative book about SAR training, forget most of the photographs.

Great book for gettting the basics for beginning Search and Rescue work with a canine. Book gives a step-by-step approach to training the canine as well as the handler. I recommend this book to anyone that needs information in canine SAR work.

This is a great book if, you're either starting SAR work or just want to know what's it all about! It's clear, well written, with many b/w photos and drawings. It's easy to follow and to understand all the basic's. However, if you want to buy something, very complete, you have experience, etc. This may not be what you're looking for. Still, I'll add it to my collection!!!

Susan Bulanda's READY! is an excellent book for begineer and expert alike. The methodologies of dog training outlined in the text have provided our team with an invaluable resource. The training "problems" outlined for the reader are also an excellent training tool for canine rescue teams.
