    Book Description

This is a survey of recent developments in the field of cointegration, which links long run components of a pair or of a group of series. It can then be used to discuss some types of equilibrium and to introduce them into time-series models in a fairly uncontroversial way. The idea was introduced in the early 1980s and has generated much interest since then amongst econometricians and macroeconomists. The authors discuss the basic ideas in their introduction, and the final chapters review the most recent developments in the field in a non-technical way that will enable economists with some training in modern econometrics to understand and appreciate these developments.

      Book Description

Today, tens of thousands of companies are struggling to become "time-based" competitors, inspired by such corporations as Motorola, General Electric, Citicorp, and a myriad of others who have cut production time in half—or more. But until now, the literature has focused on the theory and philosophy of fast cycle time, rather than the tools and techniques for implementing it. Here, for the first time, Christopher Meyer, an internationally recognized expert in cycle time reduction, presents a step-by-step blueprint for transforming traditional companies into fast cycle competitors.

Meyer argues that fast cycle time is achieved not by working faster, but by aligning the organization's purpose, strategy and structure. He demonstrates how the product development cycle must become a learning laboratory in which the four continuous elements "Design, Fabricate, Assemble, and Test" are analyzed with the intent to improve strategy in the next business cycle. Analyzing strategy and core processes enables management to detect and correct problems earlier, and leverage knowledge for improved innovation and increased value for customers.

Employing an ongoing case study, Core Products, Inc., throughout the text, Meyer shows how to redesign the organization for manufacturability and assembly, how to implement multifunctional teams that work, how to analyze and map critical cycle time interdependencies such as "co-location," and how to measure the impact of cycle time on business performance. Meyer's practical approach provides a simple methodology for organizations to deliver products to customers rapidly, accurately, and reliably.

"Chris Meyer interrelates many pieces that we have all read about in different places into a coherent guide to making it happen. Ironically, as Meyer shows, implementing fast cycle time means almost the opposite of what most American managers are inclined to do...Many years of practical experience have shown Meyer and his colleagues the wisdom of a paradox—that to speed up you often have to slow down."

—From the Foreword by Peter M. Senge

5 out of 5 stars Excellent pre-lean introduction to improving development.......2007-09-29

Fast Cycle time was written in 1993, though his ideas are very much inline with the "modern" lean ideas (concept introduces in 1990). The book explains how to improve cycle time in product development and how this will lead to a general improvement within the company.

The book consists of two parts. The first part describes the fast cycle time concepts. It introduces cross-functional teams (which the author calls multifunctional teams). Most importantly it links the speed of development to the speed of learning since product development is equal to learning (very much inline with Al Ward's "Lean Product Development" ideas). It links his ideas back to the learning organization theories and shows how these concepts are an absolute must when speeding up product development.

The second part is about the implementation of these concepts. First it talks about making a clear strategy so that the organization can focus. After that, one of the main topics of the book, is the multifunctional team chapter. This introduces the concepts and talks about the different organizational models. Also it'll go over the typical development of multifunctional teams. The next chapter covers process redesign. This chapter is very similar to lean's "value steam mapping" ideas (well, exactly the same to be precise). Though Chris Meyer uses process maps instead of value stream maps. The book ends with some guidance on implementation of these ideas.

The book was well written and very clear. There is a balance between examples and theory. The CP (Quantum?) example wasn't worked out that well. Anyways, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. It's one of the only books which has a strong focus on cross-functional teams and it's relation to cycle time and organization learning. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Cross functional alignment is the key . . ........2002-11-26

Many of our clients are struggling with life at internet speeds. If you haven't read this classic on speeding up your organizations product and service life cycle, now may be a good time to do so. Praise for this book, as listed on the back of the dust jacket, come from Ford Motor Company, Quantum Corporation and others with Ed McCraken, CEO of Silicon Graphics Computer Systems stating that this is; "A must read for executive who seek speed and competitiveness."

Mr. Meyer utilizes an "ongoing case study" to make his points concerning FCT processes. This approach lends credence to his positions and gives the book a solid feel of practicality. In addition, frequent use of diagrams helps the reader visualize the organizations, processes, information flow, and cross functional activities of organizations. The layout of the book is logical and provides for continuity as Meyer builds on each preceding chapter.

The book is filled with excellent observations and pithy sayings: "The responsibility for strategic alignment rests with senior management." "Any organization leader who seeks to 'empower' people should first create a clear strategic context that enables others to use the power with which they were born." "Research demonstrates there is a negative correlation between economic growth rate and the number of Nobel prizes won." "A sustainable FCT capability can be achieved only by learning faster, not by working faster."

5 out of 5 stars Time is worth more than it used to be.......1999-08-06

This book provides a compelling blend of theory and practical advice on how to move quickly. I found many things that used combined Balanced Score Card techniques focused on cycle time with the author's real world experience - which is considerable.

The book is aimed at managing the culture and mindset of the organization, not a particular project. A worthwhile read if time-based-competition applies to your business.

          Book Description

The biological ways in which diseases of plants, caused by pathogenic microbes can be controlled without the use of chemical pesticides is the subject of this book. The basis of biocontrol (in microbiology, ecology, and plant pathology) is described and many examples of control measures in commercial use or development are given. There is increasing interest in biocontrol from the general public, environmentalists and the major world agrochemical companies, and this easily read text presents recent developments in the subject. The book provides the necessary references and literature citations to allow a more detailed investigation of particular diseases or control systems to be made. This is an important book that will be especially helpful to graduate and undergraduate students in botany, biology, microbiology, plant pathology, agriculture, horticulture, crop science and related courses.

            Description:
Among soil microorganisms, bacteria and fungi and to a lesser extent actinomycetes, have received considerable attention as biocontrol agents of soil-borne fungal plant pathogens and as plant growth promoters. Within actinomycetes, Streptomyces spp. have been investigated predominantly, mainly because of their dominance on, and the ease of isolation from, dilution plates and because of the commercial interest shown on the antibiotics produced by certain Streptomyces spp. Many of non-streptomycete actinomycetes (NSA) taxa are therefore rarely reported in literature dealing with routine isolations of biocontrol agents and/or plant growth promoters from plant and soil. It is clear that special isolation methods need to be employed in routine isolations to selectively isolate NSA. Some interesting information exists, albeit in relatively few reports compared to that on other microorganisms, on the biological activities of NSA, especially in relation to their mechanisms of action in the biological control of soil-borne fungal plant pathogens and plant growth promotion. This review presents an overview of this information and seeks to encourage further investigations into what may be considered a relatively unexplored area of research. Certain soil environmental factors, especially in horticultural systems, could be manipulated to render the soil conducive for the biological activities of NSA. A variety of NSA isolated by selective methods have not only shown to be rhizosphere competent but also adapted for an endophytic life in root cortices. Some of the NSA, including endophytic strains that have shown potential to suppress soil-borne fungal plant pathogens, are able to employ one or more mechanisms of antagonism including antibiosis, hyperparasitism and the production of cell-wall degrading enzymes. Strains of NSA promote plant growth by producing plant growth regulators. Enhancement of plant growth by the antagonists are considered to help the host by producing compensatory roots that mask the impact of root diseases.

I have used this book several times in Africa - my edition was published in 1995. Even when your luggage weight is severely restricted (as when you use small airplanes), this doesn't get left behind!! I am constantly surprised that tour guides, etc. from Africa don't know this book - so many of the other guides weigh a great deal and only cover birds or mammals or whatever. This gives countries, habitats, and many pictures plus essays about the wildlife in question plus a map including its range. Outstanding! If you buy nothing else, buy this. I am pleased to discover it is still in print and am ordering one for a friend - no way would I even lend my copy!

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great!.......2007-03-18

As other reviewers have noted, this is a wonderful Field Guide with excellent photographs and descriptions. Indeed, following my first trip to Tanzania, I purchased a copy. Prior to my second trip, however, someone suggested that I take a look, instead, at Withers' Wildlife of East Africa and I was immediately sold on it.

There are various reasons why I think Withers is the better choice for those going on their first safari in East Africa. Most importantly, it's a lot smaller/lighter and the descriptions are opposite the bird and animal photographs, rather than at the back of the Audubon Guide. In addition, the coverage of wildlife is excellent: we saw a lot of different animals and birds and, with very few exceptions, they were all covered in Wild Life of East Africa.

A friend is off on safari this summer and asked me about what to take. They had heard of The Audubon Field Guide, but not Withers et al. It's that conversation that prompted me to write this.

Took on safari. Useful size and plastic cover resists creasing and dirt.

Photos are first rate and the detail sections well indexed. I took several books with me, but this was the one I used for identifying animals and birds.

I recently went on Safari in Kenya & Tanzania and this was the book mostly used by our various guides. I purchased on my return and it has been invaluable help naming the animals and birds in all my photos. It has also given me a much better background knowledge of the area and wildlife we saw. I would definitely recommend the book to anyone going to Africa, by the way the book was available in Africa at almost 3 times the Amazon price!!

I would have to disagree with those who have previously "reviewed" this book. This is certainly not a "great" book in my opinion since, it attempts to cover all bases in fishing and, thus, is simply far too general for my tastes. I don't know too many people who a) fly fish for high-mountain trout, and b) bass fish for lake (pond) bass, and c) who troll for marlin. Frankly, I found that I had to skim all of the material that was of no interest to me - alot of material! Further, I found that it was outdated already as it didn't even cover the subject of saltwater "soft" baits. I was honestly looking for a narrower treatise on saltwater fishing - not every kind of fishing imaginable. However, that said, I assume for the price that if you can find a few tidbits of fishing "wisdom," then, you might feel vindicated for having purchased the book. Otherwise, I'd look for publications with a more narrowly defined subject, particularly, on the type of fishing (fly, saltwater, etc.) that the reader is interested in pursuing.

More than I think I ever wanted to know, but really good stuff! In my part of the world we do industrial fishing - no reel is too big, no rod too stiff - but a guy who wants to do it sportingly is a refreshing point of view, and the techical info is nothing short of superb. That is, if you want to go to the trouble.

Trying to explain knots and terminal tackle to other people I fish with can some times be very frustrating, so I handed them this book. I salt and fresh water fish. This book is excellent for all types and levels of angling.

5 out of 5 stars Hook, Line, and Sinker.......2000-01-23

When I first picked this book up I was a little disappointed in the lack of photos and lengthy text descriptions. When I started to read it, however, I couldn't put it down. In an industry (fishing) that seems to thrive on anecdotal "science" with very little respect for facts, this book stands out. The author has put together an astounding amount of factual information on the basic tools of fishing and writes clearly and with a sense of humor. You will learn more about swivels, sinkers, line, artificial baits and the hardware of fishing than you ever guess even existed. A really cool book.

5 out of 5 stars If You Fish, You Should Have This Book.......1999-07-25

This is a great reference book to have around. Of all the fishing books I have, I keep coming back to this one the most. Gary Soucie is very good at explaining in detail everything you ever wanted to know about terminal tackle. What a great book.

2 out of 5 stars Made up facts.......2005-10-20

Contains quite a few made up things that would make good analogies, but are presented as facts. Many of these claims aren't sepcifically attributed to any source, although the book has a "further reading" list of about 50 books. The author goes so far as to try to explain in detail how all these things work. For example, the soul is explained to be residing in a cavity near the heart. It explains that the soul passes messages back and forth from the brain via the central nervous system. This essentially means that anyone paralyzed from the neck down has no soul, according to the author. Overall, I found some useful information in the book, though most of it wasn't and it one needs to wade through "facts" to find what's actually useful.

1 out of 5 stars Disjointed, badly written book. .......2005-08-19

I was interested in a different perspective on the 12-Step program, which has been used for (besides alcoholism), cluttering, drug addiction, and weight control, among other conditions.

This book was so badly written, I couldn't finish it. Glad I borrowed it from the library.

Also, I generally don't make a habit of reading the "Acknowledgments" chapter in books, but in this one I did. Be forwarned: the author was apparently a fan of Seth, Ramtha, Zarathustra, Mafu, and Rajni--all various "beings" who are "channeled" by various and sundry individuals--if they are not your cup of tea, this book has nothing for you.

5 out of 5 stars A Change Your Life Book.......2004-10-01

I have read thousands of books in my forty years on this earth and this one helped me to change my life. I have been in program for many years enjoying a "Normal" life. However, one experience that had evaded me was "Extraordinary". Thanks to this unbelievable information written with love, hope and reality, I learned to take responsiblity for the life I had created. I was able to then learn step by step to give up the life I no longer wanted and live the life of a women with a divine nature. I just wanted to let you know that I have never felt so alive. I have never lived with such abundance, and I will thank you someday when I am on my own book tour. Remember who you are. Remember you changed my life. There is something I say every morning and evening that you gave to me. "I willingly release all thoughts, beliefs, people, places and things that no longer lovingly serve me and I choose LOVE, JOY, ABUNDANCE, ADVENTURE, PROSPERITY, BEAUTY AND BEING A WORLDWIDE BEST SELLING AUTHOR, SO BE IT! 5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.......2004-02-11

If you have done the 12 Steps and find yourself asking yourself "okay, now what?" then this book will help you.

All we are ever looking for in sex, drugs, alcohol, food, etc, is God -- our own inner Beingness which is always whole, complete and perfect. The step after the twelve steps (call it the thirteenth step, perhaps) is to wake up to who and what we are. The twelve steps are a ladder we use to raise our awareness to the point where we can realize that what we have been seeking "out there" and trying to fulfill through our addiction, was really just a running away from the tremendously beautiful and loving being that we are. Use this book as an opportunity to stop running away -- to stop telling yourself the lie that you are something other than perfection in your very being. We are not our minds, nor our bodies, nor our feelings. How can we be sure? Because we can witness them. If we can witness something, how can it be us? It can't be. So, the question becomes, "Who am I?" The answer is what you have been looking for all along.

A note to the person who left the not so nice comments (the reader from Longmeadow, MA USA): Your comment was rude, not loving, and not supportive. If you want to help her (which you seem to proclaim), then simply love her -- which means accept her exactly as she is -- 100% without trying to change or control her. Try not to be so hard on yourself because you are taking it out on others. If you slipped up, would you really want others to treat you in such a judgemental and demeaning way or would you want them to be loving and truthful with you? Character bashing is never necessary nor helpful -- that only helps grow our own ego.

Anyway, a great book, which I highly recommend.

If you've done the twelve steps and have managed to remain sober, then now make the decision to be who you were always destined to be -- your perfect, Divine Self. You are beautiful. If you don't feel like it, then drop the "disapproval stick" that you walk around with whacking yourself with all the time -- and start approving of yourself, completely. That's all you need to do. If you approved of yourself 100%, you'd be There, with a capital "T". What's there not to love?

1 out of 5 stars The Author's Latest Book Negates This One.......2003-08-19

How unfortunate that Grabhorn's latest book, Dear God! What's Happening To Us? negates any positive messages or information from THIS book.

In her latest, she admits to "drinking again after four decades of sobriety" and, worse, she blames it all on a group she calls "The Others". Where's the Self-Responsibility? Where's the Trust in the HIGHER Power?

Too bad. It's a shame she's choosing to self-destruct her writing career. Hopefully, enough bad reviews of her newest book will get her to (once again) seek the help she needs with her alcoholism.

We purchased this book during a visit to the most beautiful of the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington State, Orcas Island. The food reminds me so much about what I love about Orcas Island. Fresh, natural, organic foods prepared simply to create an elegant evening for any home. You will love this book. Every recipe is a supreme delight!

Christina opened her restaurant on beautiful Orcas Island over 25 years ago and it's still a restaurant we recommend to visitors as a must. Before it was fashionable she began her restaurant committed to fresh local ingredients and seasonal recipes. We love her cookbook because it's designed that way with pages dedicated to tomatoes, apples or oysters and we love her stories about growing up in the Northwest and how that shaped her vision of food. The best thing is the percentage of recipes we'd make again - always our judge of a great cookbook. We love her crab fondue, her steamed clams with thyme and lemon vodka, her picnic chicken liver terrine, roasted vegetable salad with tomato caper vinegrette, hot and sour fish soup... and there's lots more. Makes your mouth water doesn't it!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Simply the most wonderful food and people!.......2005-10-21

My wife and I enjoyed a night full of incredible food and music at Christina's on the evening of our wedding. The reception was attended by friends who took planes, trains, and ferries from as far away as Boston, Cincinnati, Chicago, and Ann Arbor... everyone fell in love with Christina's food, Bruce's smile, and Christopher's Hot Monks. A perfect night to a perfect wedding day. Christina's cookbook is a wonderful reminder of the unique flavors and fresh tastes that has always distinguished her restaurant as simply the best!

5 out of 5 stars Stories of an Island Gem.......2004-12-08

As customers who have already enjoyed Christina's restaurant--which, as expats visiting from France, my family and I stumbled into 20 years ago--we may be biased. But this is more than a compendium of the wonderful cuisine we have enjoyed there, more than the sum of welcome and ambiance (and WHAT a view from the deck overlooking the waters of Eastsound!). Christina knows how to write as well as to cook. The little essays about discovering food as she grew up in the Pacific Northwest bring the recipes to life. They also provide a capsule history of a generation: from the wheat fields of eastern Washington to the burgeoning restaurants of Portland, Oregon, to the lovely little island north of Seattle (Orcas) that is home to the gem she created as a single mom a couple of decades ago. Read the book. Go to the restaurant. Live some history!
