Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful guide for anyone starting or bettering a public relations firm (or any professional services firm)!.......2007-04-29

I cannot praise this book enough. It does a wonderful job explaining how to find, attract, and bring in clients at a public relations firm. But it doesn't stop at rainmaking. Instead it also fully explains how to run and manage a public relations firm. This book is very well written, and the author interjects humor in his writing from time to time. A true pleasure to read.

If you already have your own PR firm, then I recommend you get a copy of this book to be your basic guide as to how to become more successful in the PR business. And if you are thinking of starting your own PR firm, then I recommend you get a copy of this book to be your basic guide as to how to start a successful PR business. Also, I suggest you might want to visit your public library and examine volume two of Business Plans Handbook (ISBN: 0810393956) which has a sample business plan for a PR firm included.

A public relations firm is a type of consulting practice or professional services business. The basics described in this book apply equally to public accounting firms, law firms, financial planning firms, investment firms, coaching practices, and other consulting services. I highly recommend anyone (not just PR professionals) get a copy of this book to help him or her systematize his or her practice so it will be lucrative and successful.

I am very surprised that I am the first person to review this book. And I am equally surprised that this second edition has been available for purchase for just over a year now and there haven't been any book reviews written. The book is a gold mine and full of wonderful information. Check out the online Table of Contents for yourself and see.

I would have liked the book better if there had been a chapter on how to quit your job at a PR firm and start your own practice. And it would have been really good if there had been a chapter on putting together a business plan and how to do it (Chapter 10 touches on the subject). As a result, this book is more for someone who has a firm already and just needs to make it better. Accordingly, this is a book about strategic planning. But keep in mind that strategic planning books on a certain type of business can be great tools in putting together a business plan. So this book really is for anyone who wants to put together a great successful lucrative consulting practice. 5 stars!

        Book Description

In the mid-1920s Raymond M. Patterson left a comfortable position with the Bank of England for a life in with wilds of Canada. Here, he hunted, trapped, fished and prospected his way along the rivers he would later write about. This spellbinding book, his most famous account, chronicles his two journeys down the treacherous Nahanni River between the Yukon and the Mackenzie River, spurred on by his irrepressible lust for adventure and his quest for gold. The New Yorker called this "a truly enchanting book."

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK!.......2005-10-21

I purchased Dangerous River: Adventure on the Nahanni to use as research for my latest release, The River, an exciting and terrifying techno-thriller that takes place on the Nahanni River.

I found Dangerous River to be invaluable to me, and after reading it, I yearn to travel to the Nahanni River to see this wonderful part of Canada.

I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a true Canadian adventure. The photos take you back to a simpler life, and the author's humor and attention to detail are entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent look at early 20th century wilderness expeditions........1998-09-19

Patterson makes a 200 mile snowshoe trek in 50 below weather to pick up the mail seem like slightly unusual walk to the post office!

5 out of 5 stars This is a Far North adventure you'll never forget!.......1997-11-30

"Dangerous River" is one of the finest Far North adventures ever written. R. M. Patterson and his partner Gordon Matthews were the last of a breed of men who tackled the Far North with nothing but stamina, courage, and consummate skill with rifle, pack and canoe. Trapping and searching for gold in the legendary South Nahanni River country in the 1920's, Patterson describes their adventures in language that makes the reader yearn to see one the premier rivers of the world. Patterson's style is laced with wonderfully dry British humor as well as a poet's skill in describing the breathtaking landscapes. You feel as though you're right beside him throughout his adventures and hungering to go there yourself. You can't ask more a writer and his book than that!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional wilderness story of gold-rush era Canada.......1997-08-29

This tale of wilderness adventure is set in the unexplored region of the South Nahanni river valley in the Nortwest Territories, Canada. It tells of unexplained deaths (the reason it was called Dead-Man's Valley), and the survival tactics and techniques of explorers during the gold-rush days of the area. Patterson spins the tale in a way which makes you feel the icy cold winters and the lavish and wildlife filled summers. His writings are non-fictional, and he includes maps and photographs taken while he was there. It is exciting, and laden with danger about the rapids, ice-flows, and Indian legends. I highly recommend it to anyone with a love of the outdoors, adventure, or wilderness history!

5 out of 5 stars The Classic Canadian wilderness canoe adventure........1997-04-30

Paddling upstream through "Hells Gate" rapids and past 4000 feet canyons on the South Nahanni River in Canada's Northwest Territories in the 1920's before the advent of the bush plane was northern adventure at it's best. After reading the book, I took the canoe trip and the beauty of the scenery actually exceeded the best descriptive prose in the novel. Look up Black Feather outfitters in Toronto and sign up. I had to buy this book for my Writing for Chemists in college. It was very expensive when I bought it. I only used it once. The book is not very well organized, and it is difficult to find what you need. I think it is not a good book!

5 out of 5 stars The ACS Style Guide : A Manual for Authors and Editors.......2001-09-12

The ACS Style Guide (A Manual for Authors and Editors) 2nd is an up-to-date edition for the authors and editors, and a guideline for the American Chemistry Society (ACS) publications. This edition almost answers all the possible question of authors and editors. The detail index from page 431 to page 460 gives us the most effective, comprehensive and user-friendly guide for publication.

        5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2000-09-07

The American Chemical Society has done an excellent job in compiling this invaluable resource for its members. It encompasses everything you could possible want to know about writing a scientific paper, posters, letters to the editor, press releases, naming and numbering of chemical compounds, conventions in chemistry, copyright, ethical issues as well as preparing an effective oral presentation. In addition, it has a clear and concise section on grammar and punctuation, a very functional index, is up-to-date including guidelines on how to cite references from Web sites, and provides a useful bibliography after each chapter. My job often involves proofreading of abstracts or journal articles in various fields of science; apart from a dictionary to check spelling, this is the resource I reach for most.

          Book Description

"One of the most influential wine books of all time" (Lawrence Osborne, The Accidental Connoisseur)

Bordeaux and Its Wines, now in its seventeenth edition, is the ultimate book on the most legendary of all wine regions. Since 1846, "the classic reference work on Bordeaux wines" (Jancis Robinson, The Oxford Companion to Wine) has guided wine connoisseurs, wine professionals, and vineyard investors through this complex region, providing detailed information on every one of its 1,800 vineyards, more than 14,500 wine brands, and 200 wine merchants. No other title comes close to the comprehensive information on Bordeaux wines and wineries presented in this book. While 'Feret', as it is colloquially known, is used by professionals for its comprehensive treatment of all facets of the Bordeaux wine region and industry, there is also information on the art of selecting, drinking and storing Bordeaux.

If you love great photography and are bored by all the predictable efforts that appear in most wine books, this is for you! Some of the shots by Max Alexander are really breathtaking, and, like the text, they really give a sense of the place. A terrific, affordable coffee table book

                  Book Description

This high-level yet readable analysis of one of the world’s most respected wine regions has been expanded; the first edition dealt only with the left bank, and this new edition adds coverage of the south bank of the river Bordeaux. It is an all-embracing, comprehensive volume by an award-winning wine writer. Brook, whose books have received such prestigious awards as the Prix du Champagne Lanson, Glenfiddich, and Veuve Clicquot prizes, provides insider information about how the great Médoc, Graves, and other world-famous Bordeaux wines are produced, from the red Pauillac Cabernet Sauvignons to the sweet Sauterne whites. Detailed maps and photos cover the most famous châteaux and communes, as well as smaller specialists and newcomers worth watching.

This is the only book I've seen that is so comprehensive in describing every Chateau in every conceivable detail. Size of the estate, what grapes are used, how long in cask, what other wines are made by the various Chateaux... This is an INCREDIBLE reference book! Pete Duffy
