Book Description
"[A]n important addition to the literature on ethnic arts in Latin America, tourism, cultural identity, social change, and globalization."
The Americas
"This book is not only very readable, but also highly informative in the subject area of performance, as well as place, and how indigenous peoples have become engaged in, and deal with, that slippery phenomenon called globalization."
Journal of Latin American Geography
"Walter E. Little paints a complex and nuanced portrait of Maya identity formation in Mays in the Marketplace."
American Ethnologist
Selling handicrafts to tourists has brought the Maya peoples of Guatemala into the world market. Vendors from rural communities now offer their wares to more than 500,000 international tourists annually in the marketplaces of larger cities such as Antigua, Guatemala City, Panajachel, and Chichicastenango. Like businesspeople anywhere, Maya artisans analyze the desires and needs of their customers and shape their products to meet the demands of the market. But how has adapting to the global marketplace reciprocally shaped the identity and cultural practices of the Maya peoples?
Drawing on over a decade of fieldwork, Walter Little presents the first ethnographic study of Maya handicraft vendors in the international marketplace. Focusing on Kaqchikel Mayas who commute to Antigua to sell their goods, he explores three significant issues:
- how the tourist marketplace conflates global and local distinctions.
- how the marketplace becomes a border zone where national and international, developed and underdeveloped, and indigenous and non-indigenous come together.
- how marketing to tourists changes social roles, gender relationships, and ethnic identity in the vendors' home communities.
Little's wide-ranging research challenges our current understanding of tourism's negative impact on indigenous communities. He demonstrates that the Maya are maintaining a specific, community-based sense of Maya identity, even as they commodify their culture for tourist consumption in the world market.

Whimsical and entertaining.......2007-08-12
Lewis Thomas' essays offer the creative and whimsical perspectives of a scientist. I doubt the non-biologist would appreciate these 'notes of a biology watcher' much, but as a biologist myself, I have to say that this is one of my favorite books for light reading.
No, I don't get a great deal of new knowledge from reading Lives of a Cell, but he clearly looked at science and the world in ways that I wouldn't have thought of. I've caught myself chuckling at his wit with each and every essay - and there are quite a few in there - and I re-read them when the occasion arises (usually while passing the time during traveling).
And so, in a phrase, I'd describe this book as 'light reading and wit for biologists.' If that's what you're looking for, it's a very good book indeed.
The John D. Connection.......2007-04-24
Chapter 9 of "The Lonely Silver Rain" by John D. MacDonald, Fawcett 1985, opens with McGee "...reading Lewis Thomas and for the first time he depressed me, even when he said that the glue that seems to hold mankind in some kind of lasting stasis is everyone's desire to be useful."
Did MacDonald and Thomas meet at Harvard? He was in the MBA program in 1938-39. Was Thomas in the medical school at that time? MacDonald died in 1986 while undergoing heart surgery. I guess if Thomas depressed him, he had it pretty bad.
Awe Inspiring.......2007-03-10
In recommending this book to an acquaintance, I remembered how much I loved it. I read it a long time ago, perhaps 20 years ago, and still feel that it was one of the best reads of my lifetime. Contrary to reinforcing a rift between religion and science, this book seems to marry miracle to biology; it also marries macrocosm to microcosm. My reaction when I finished it, was to want to dance and sing! The content of this book is simply amazing! If you want to have your awe and curiosity piqued, I recommend it--with enthusiasm and joy!
Amazing.......2007-01-09
This is truly an amazing work. Thomas's writing is beautiful and the stories fantastic with just enough humor. I have learned so much and enjoyed it all at the same time. I highly recommend this book. If you are not sure of something, look it up! Just think how smart you will become.
Science for interested non-scientists.......2006-11-14
I selected this book from the Modern Library list of Top 100 Non-Fiction books with the trepidation of a non technical person with only moderate interest in science. Mr. Thomas, however, immediately disarms the non technical mind and proceeds to fascinate as he presents the very familiar in totally new perspectives. His description of our bodies as a system of mitochondria pursuing their own interests with total disinterest of our consciousness as an entity is startling while, at the same time, it becomes immediately obvious. A discussion of disease as a "biologic misinterpretation of borders" by microscopic entities also causes the reader to see the well known in new ways.
There is enough author left over
to leave us with some straight-forward observations: "The great secret known to internists...is that most things get better by themselves." Or: "If an idea cannot move on its own , pushing it doesn't help; best to let it lie there."
Thomas' last 2 sections leave both the secular and non-secular with a strong affirmation of the unliklihood of the miracle of life. Overall, this is a brief (150 page) book that deserves a wide readership.

Book Description
Science education is experiencing a revitalization, as it is recognized that science should be accessible to everyone, not just society’s future scientists. One way to make the study of science more substantive to the non-major is to require a laboratory component for all science courses. The subject of applied botany with its emphasis on the practical aspects of plant science, the authors believe, will be appealing to the non-major as it exemplifies how a basic science can be applied to problem solving. Laboratory Manual for Applied Botany will make students realize that the study of plants is relevant to their lives and that they can participate in the discovery process of science. Although the manual includes much of the basic plant anatomy found in standard botany manuals, it differs in taking a practical approach, examining those plants and plant products that have sustained or affected human society.

Book Description
Recent advances in imaging technology reveal, in real time and great detail, critical changes in living cells and organisms. This manual is a compendium of emerging techniques, organized into two parts: specific methods such as fluorescent labeling, and delivery and detection of labeled molecules in cells; and experimental approaches ranging from the detection of single molecules to the study of dynamic processes in organelles, organs, and whole animals. Although presented primarily as a laboratory manual, the book includes introductory and background material and could be used as a textbook in advanced courses. It also includes a DVD containing movies of living cells in action, created by investigators using the imaging techniques discussed in the book.
The editors, David Spector and Robert Goldman, whose previous book was Cells: A Laboratory Manual, are highly respected investigators who have taught microscopy courses at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, the Marine Biology Laboratory at Woods Hole, and Northwestern University.

Reaction to Lonely Planet Watching Wildlife Galapagos.......2007-05-15
In anticipation of an upcoming trip to the Galapagos, I looked at a bunch of books before deciding to purchase this one from Lonely Planet. I love the way the book is organized, taking each island and explaining the unique features of that island. After that, the animals and birds are listed so that you can cross reference everything. In addition, there are lots of helpful travel tips in the beginning chapters. Most importantly, the pictures are fantastic!!
Perfect Format.......2007-04-19
This was hands-down the best wildlife guide we used when visiting the Galapagos Islands.
It's divided by islands but also has sections about the types of mammals, fish, birds, and reptiles for further, in-depth review.
Because visitors reach the islands one-at-a-time, in designated areas and trails, the book is organized exactly to the physical approaches. Really reads quickly, and to the point. Locations totally accurate about nesting areas and sea lion hangouts, but also describes the best geological landmarks. Will help you with itinerary design, with logging your sightings, remembering your trip, and help with virtually all species identification.
Possibly the most user-friendly book LP ever published.

Book Description
Most sailors dream of journeying to foreign ports, but many are held back by fears both real and imagined. However, as Reese Palley explains, sailing close to the shore is considerably more dangerous than voyaging across the sea. There Be No Dragons is intended to encourage those timid of the deep oceans and to inspire the confidence necessary to set sail across the wine dark seas of the world.By his own account a sailor of no great skill, Palley has nevertheless safely completed a fifteen-year circumnavigation. If he can do it, then even the lowliest amateur, equipped only with the simplest of information and a small but sturdy boat, can follow in his wake.Palley's essential and entertaining guide, now available for the first time in paperback, discusses easily learned skills and inexpensively acquired equipment, all of which are requisite for safe sailing."...funny, raucous, insightful, anarchistic, entertaining, instructional; seamanship with a difference." WoodenBoat
Customer Reviews:
Dragon slayin'.......2007-03-08
Great book, great advise, nice writing style and very easy to read. Really does address key issues that sailors will be considering before venturing further in their small boats. Read it and it will motivate you to "just do it!".
Good Read.......2006-08-10
Since our long-range goal is to sail the Caribbean I thought this book would help us ready our boat for the adventure. I was not disappointed. Alternately funny & informative this is truly a must-read before you set sail for any long adventure. I have a strong feeling it will be well-worn before we head out.
OK, but..........2006-07-28
Contains some useful advice on blue-water sailing. However, after seeing the author's photo on the back cover, I *really* could have done without his lengthy discourse on sexual relations at sea.
For aspiring sailors seeking to launch.......2004-07-14
There Be No Dragons: How To Cross A Big Ocean In A Small Sailboat is the story of how Reese Palley (a self-admitted marginally skilled sailor) managed to safely complete a fifteen-year circumnavigation of the globe in a very small sailboat. Among other insightful bits of nautical wisdom, readers (and aspiring sailors seeking to launch out into their own nautical adventuring around the world) will learn that its actually safer to sail out into the ocean than to hug the coast lines; that even a rank amateur having only the sketches information can succeed if his small boat is sturdy, his confidence is strong, and he gives a careful reading to Reese Palley's There Be No Dragons with its combination of easily learned skills, identified necessary equipment, and advice for safe sailing.
wrongly titled.......2004-03-30
you might find this book enjoyable if you like rambling sailing anecdotes.
but it is definitely not a sailing guide.

Book Description
Congratulations! Your little girl is getting married! Once the initial excitement of the announcement wears off, it becomes clear that Mother of the Bride is not just a title. It's a role, with responsibilities and do's and don'ts.
The Mother-of-the-Bride Book explains that role and how it has changed over time. It details the exact responsibilities of the Mother of the Bride (MOB) from the earliest planning stages right up to waving good-bye as the newlyweds depart for their honeymoon--and even after that. The MOB may be involved in or completely responsible for: Putting together the guest list and designing a seating chart; Helping the bride and groom choose a date and location; Throwing an engagement party; Arranging lodging for out-of-town guests; Booking a band, hiring a caterer, buying favors; Countless other details that can't be overlooked.
Chock full of ideas and advice, The Mother-of-the-Bride Book is an invaluable tool for the second busiest and (admit it) second most important woman in any wedding.
Customer Reviews:
This book makes the planning FUN for the Mother of the Bride.......2007-03-13
As the mother of the bride, I really enjoyed the details in this book, especially the warnings about some common mistakes made by mothers of the bride. It also gave me great planning details for the things I'll be helping with (since I don't have time to look at 10,000 bridal websites to get info, this book saved me time!), like the cake, the invitations, the flowers. Using this book makes the process fun, which my daughter loves, and it keeps me organized. I absolutely love it, and I love that Sharon Naylor focuses on the fact that this planning time is not just about the wedding, but about the relationships between mother and daughter (and son-in-law) in the future. That really gave me a lot to think about, and it helped me come up with great ways to welcome my son-in-law into the family. Another great book by Ms. Naylor!

I highly recommend this book to any hostess or mother of the bride. I am going up to West Point Military Academy this weekend to finalize preparations for my daughter's party. Details I never would have thought to ask, but certainly appear to be most important, were brought to my attention. There are also areas to document deposits and conversations with various vendors who will be hired for the party. I suggest that you write in pencil, because changes can always be erased. This is a remarkable guide to effectly carry out plans in a timely, correct fashion. I have browsed through books over the last few months. This has given me everything I need.
Great job, Sharon Naylor.

Product Description
This is an encyclopaedic study of English dress from the fifth to the eleventh centuries, drawing evidence from archaeology, text and art, and taking account of re-enactors' experience. It examines archaeological textiles, cloth production and the significance of imported cloth and foreign fashions. Dress is discussed as a marker of gender, ethnicity, status and social role, and its contemporary significance in terms of symbolism and stylistic messaging is examined - whether Anglo-Saxons were dressing a corpse for its (pagan) grave, condemning frivolous dress among persons in holy orders, bequeathing their own clothes or commissioning them for a king. The book discusses what modern observers can and cannot deduce from medieval representations of clothing, questioning stereotypes. Generously illustrated with 25 plates (12 colour) and 140 drawings, it demonstrates clothing in contemporary art (manuscripts, ivories, metalwork, stone sculpture, mosaics), and focuses! on surviving dress fasteners and accessories, explaining types and geographical/chronological distribution. There are colour reconstructions of early Anglo-Saxon dress and a cutting pattern for a gown from the Bayeux tapestry (by Robin Netherton). Old English garment names are discussed throughout and a glossary is appended. It updates and develops the author's groundbreaking Dress in Anglo-Saxon England in 1986, adding many new illustrations.

An Amazing Concentration of Information.......2005-03-16
This revised edition of Dr. Owen-Crocker's 1986 book does not disappoint. It incorporates vast amounts of new research, archaeological material, and reenactor feedback and includes many more illustrations as well as reconstruction sketches and intelligent discussion of the available evidence for Anglo-Saxon costume between the fifth and eleventh centuries. A must-have reference for any Anglo-Saxon scholar, as well as for anyone with a serious interest in northern European costume during the so-called "Dark Ages."
