    Book Description

"Hoskins, McFadyen and Finn de-dismalise economics. Their book is clearly written, full of cogent and apposite examples and analyses persuasively what makes media and communications like, and unlike, other economic sectors. From network externality to public good, from experience goods to superstars, from dumping to quotas they lucidly guide the reader through the tangles of the new economy and why it now matters less if maids burn books. Eat your heart out Thomas Carlyle."

-Richard E. Collins, The Open University, U.K.

How does the Internet affect the supply of information-based entertainment and cultural goods? Why do telephone companies have peak and off-peak prices for long-distance calls? Why is broadcasting, but not newspaper publishing, usually regulated and sometimes subsidized? Media Economics: Applying Economics to New and Traditional Media provides a thorough foundation of the microeconomic principles and concepts needed to understand media industries and issues in the converging media environment.

Media Economics differs from ordinary media economic texts by taking a conceptual approach to economic issues. As the book progresses through economic principles, authors Colin Hoskins, Stuart McFadyen, and Adam Finn use cases and examples to demonstrate how these principles can be used to analyze media issues and problems. Media Economics emphasizes economic concepts that have distinct application within media industries, including corporate media strategies and mergers, public policy within media industries, how industry structure and changing technologies affect the conduct and performance of media industries, and why the United States dominates trade in information and entertainment.

    Key Features

Media Economics assumes no prior background in economics and is designed for undergraduate and graduate students studying media economics and media industries. The book is an ideal text for public policy and the media as well as media and society courses with an economic perspective taught in Media Studies, Communication, Business, Journalism, Film Studies, Political Studies, and Economics programs.

    Book Description

The organizational world today has been characterized in various terms - turmoil, chaos, the age of paradox and unreason. Common to all these characterizations is that the conventional wisdom fails in responding to novel challenges triggered by the pervasive and radical change of organizations. Information, knowledge, information worker and information technology are at the epicenter of these changes and surprises. This book explores new organizational designs, such as, the network and virtual organization from the information perspective. In addition, proposed is a model of the nontraditional organization in which information work evolves around teams that directly serve customers. This model was put on a test, and elements of the nontraditional organization were identified in firms that have been around for quite some time - the public accounting industry, and specifically its technologically most advanced segment. The book aims at transferring experience and facilitating interest for methods of organizing suitable for the information age.

    5 out of 5 stars informative reading.......2004-06-10

This book is informative for anyone wishing to get a quick introduction into modern information management, info. tech. and
organisations. I realised, reading the book, that the clock is ticking, and that I'd better start looking harder into inormation aspects in my own company. This bok is written clearly and it can be read fast.

    5 out of 5 stars A very useful text!.......1999-11-25

New Organizational Designs by Bob Travica is a good survey of issues related to new ways of organizing in business. Travica discusses network organiztaon, adhocracy and other designs that deviate from bureaucracy. Moreover, he proposes a new kind of organization he calls non-traditional organization. Basically, this org. is based on team work , intensive use of information technologies for communication and other tasks, and on some other traits that set it apart from bureaucracy. Reading about this nontraditional org. I caught myself thinking about examples of it that can be located in some parts of my own company.

Travica's book is an easy reading. It contains clear definitions, a straightforward language, and interesting discussion.

I recommend this book to all managers, and particularly to those in info. sys. functions, so that these can better understand links between info tech. and organizing.

      Book Description

Plants use large amounts of water in their growth, contributing to important consequences for agriculture and the distribution of plant communities. This book is a laboratory manual, and serves as a companion to the textbook, Water Relations of Plants and Soils, by Kramer and Boyer (1995). Much of our knowledge of plant and soil-water relations comes from thoughtful and careful measurements of the water status of the plant and its surroundings. This book emphasizes thermodynamic methods that can be reproduced at any time or place, indicating the energy used for water transport. The manual begins with a brief review of the relevant thermodynamics, followed by a description of principles and methods used in measuring chemical potential and its components, as well as the precautions necessary to insure success. The book also provides an explanation of the uses of the pressure chamber, thermocouple psychrometer, and pressure probes, as well as selected examples of experiments and references for further study.

      Key Features
      * Explains laboratory procedures for most-used water status research methods
      * Introduces underlying thermodynamic principles
      * Compares methods; points to possible conclusions
      * Provides example experiments for immediate application

        Book Description

First published to great acclaim twenty years ago, The Tangled Wing has become required reading for anyone interested in the biological roots of human behavior. Since then, revolutions have taken place in genetics, molecular biology, and neuroscience. All of these innovations have been brought into account in this greatly expanded edition of a book originally called an 'overwhelming achievement' by The Times Literary Supplement. A masterful synthesis of biology, psychology, anthropology, and philosophy, The Tangled Wing reveals human identity and activity to be an intricately woven fabric of innumerable factors. Melvin Konner's sensitive and straightforward discussion ranges across topics such as the roots of aggression, the basis of attachment and desire, the differences between the sexes, and the foundations of mental illness.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on Human Behavior.......2007-09-03

As a previous student of Dr. Konner and a student of Neuroscience and Psychology, I must say that over the years I have read many, many books on human behavior and this is the absolute best by far. There is no book that is comprable to The Tangled Wing in it's thoroughness and it's readability. I have read this book cover to cover twice and use it for reference often. His research in the field is extensive. Dr. Konner is a marvelous speaker and his writings are equally captivating. New research in the field is developed upon the information contained in this book. Anyone interested in not only neuroscience, but how people are and why they are that way should read this book. It is very enjoyable and opens your eyes to seeing the world through a whole new perspective.

My second favorite book is "Childhood" by Dr. Konner. It's a must read for anyone interested in understanding children.

5 out of 5 stars An essential guide to human existence..with a preachy ending.......2007-08-22

I don't know how I managed to miss this one for so long (there was an earlier edition from the 1980's; this one is completely updated). Konner is a physician and anthropologist. He wrote this as an attempt "to show what an integration (of evolutionary psychology into the whole of social and behavioral sciences) might look like." It consists of an in-depth survey of the literature on the "science of human nature," and research into the biology of human "frailties" such as fear, lust, and love. He provides a very useful perspective as a cultural (?) anthropologist with great knowledge of the hunter-gatherer way of life and an understanding of the varieties of cultural expression. He frequently waxes poetic and uses substantial references to literature and the arts, of which I sometimes missed the point and which was prone to cause me to become distracted from the primary narrative as well. But give him credit for trying. Also, many chapters seemed to have no internal structure and felt like a random list of findings relevant to a subject. But I was extremely impressed with the impeccable referencing (accessed online), especially his personal recommendations for further reading.

What piqued me the most was his conclusion and final...tirade? His penultimate chapter starts with a tour of the dazzling new world created by the sequencing of the human genome but suddenly veers into a thorough and absolutely fact-based litany of why we are headed toward a Malthusian disaster if business continues as usual. He even updates Barrington Moore, Jr.'s targeting of "the attractive upper middle class mother, driving a station wagon full of happy sunburned children" (now it's an SUV and the kids are sunscreened) as the ultimate culprit in causing human misery. Several months ago I would have huzzah-ed him on and said "amen!" Now I'm not so sure of the utility of this exercise. I was actually personally offended by his statement that, "the deepest circle of hell certainly must be reserved for...'techno-optimists'." Such fools (as I) only have such hope because our homes are not yet "overwhelmed by floods, squatter populations, mafias, food shortages, electric grid failures, or epidemics."

For all the clear exposition of the causes of our potential annihilation he leaves a very scant image of our route toward salvation. Has he no imagination? Or is it just non-"academic" or Pollyanna-ish to try to envision how a successful human world might look? He only says, "It's a no-brainer: reduce population, reduce consumption, reduce pollution. That's it. Difficult? Too bad. Be grateful it's still possible. Ayres call it `God's last offer.' Take it or leave it." I think one could write a whole book in response to that....

4 out of 5 stars good complete book (w/ one complaint).......2007-07-17

This is probably the most complete book I've read regarding the biology of behavior. It is well updated on its previous foundation. At times it is very drawn out, but for true students of behavior it is indispensable. My one real complaint with MK's prose is his at times reliance on this concept of "spirit" as if he is trying for the old Gould tactic of appealing to the "non-overlapping magisteria" style of writing about science and "spirituality". It really, for me, takes away from the key points at times in this book. His further acceptance of the "religion is ok by me" stance in later debates is really an example of the backwards thinking of certain scientists when religion is given its pedastool on which to guard it from the taboo criticism of truly progressive thinkers (Dawkins et al) Good book anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Number one on my list.......2007-05-26

If I were asked to recommend only one book for everyone in the world to read, this would be the one.
It is a book about ourselves, written with compassion, humor, and great erudition in the sciences and the arts. Not light reading by any means, but infinitely worth the effort.

        5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2004-11-28

If you read only one book about human behavior, this should be it. If you read many books about human behavior, this should be one of them. Prof. Konner is wise, he is erudite, he is literate, and he is humane. Rather than take one-sided positions or air only politically correct view, Konner synthesizes a huge amount of information and comes to sensible conclusions. I cannot recommend this book highly enough

A master of parable and the Socratic method, Harvey Penick, the Texas pro who molded the games of Tom Kite and Ben Crenshaw, emerged late in his long life as the golf world's pied piper. With the phenomenal success of Harvey Penick's Little Red Book, his first primer, Penick earned a dedicated international following eager to hang on his anecdotes and embrace the practicality of his gentle advice that always seems more personal than generic. The Wisdom of Harvey Penick gathers the best of that first volume and joins it with highlights from Penick's three bestselling successors: And If You Play Golf, You're My Friend; For All Who Love the Game, which is geared particularly toward women; and The Game for a Lifetime. The compilation forms a single, convenient lifelong studies program complete with photos and keepsakes from the Penick family scrapbooks.

              Book Description

When Ben Crenshaw sank his putt at the seventy-second hole for a one-shot victory in the 1995 Masters, he bent over, buried his face in his fingers for a moment, then wept in the arms of his caddie. This was Ben's way of telling the world that what he had just done was his own memorial to his great friend and mentor Harvey Penick, who had passed away almost exactly a week before. With Crenshaw's victory, every golfer, every lover of the game, joined Ben in giving thanks to the greatest golf teacher of all time.

Harvey Penick's life in golf began when he started caddying at the Austin Country Club in Texas at the youthful age of eight. Over the next eighty-plus years, he enlightened the members of that club with insights into golf and life. In 1992, at the age of eighty-seven, he offered the world that same wisdom in a timeless collection of pieces entitled Harvey Penick's Little Red Book. He followed that with three more books, all bestsellers, and all filled with thoughts, stories, and golf advice that had stood the test of time. Now, Bud Shrake, Harvey's friend and collaborator, gathers together the very best pointers, portraits, and parables from all four of Harvey's previous works. Filled with nuggets of wisdom from Harvey Penick's Little Red Book, And If You Play Golf, You're My Friend, For All Who Love the Game, and The Game for a Lifetime and enhanced with dozens of personal photographs and keepsakes from the Penick family scrapbooks, The Wisdom of Harvey Penick is a lasting treasure from the most beloved teacher in all of golf.

Nice tips for golfer at all levels, don't have to read the entile books, each pages have different tips to help/advice the game of golf. Will be nice just flip open a page each day during golf seasons.

For us average golfers the tips are worth 5 strokes a game. I now understand more about the mechanics of the game after reading Harvey's books, than from all the instruction tips in monthly golf magazines. An entertaining and helpful book for weekend golfers. A must read for young and new golfers. Great for both men and women.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Penick Encourages & Guides Without Being Technical.......1998-08-24

This book provides the best of Penick's great anecdotes. He has so many golf related stories from his days of teaching, coaching, and assisting, and each one sheds a new perspective on this timeless game. His best contribution to golf writing is his ability to provide clear visuals in association with sound golfing principles. He doesn't leave the reading wondering how to implement an idea, but puts it in concrete terms by providing examples from his own life as well as the people he coached. Apart from the wonderful golf tips, this is just a plain good read, which borders on an autobiography. If you love the sport and you love life, you will truly enjoy this book.

There are scads of reasons why The Complete Idiot's Guide to Classical Mythology is a great reference text and a worthwhile addition to your home, but its primary appeal lies in its accessible tone. The legends of mythology are fascinating and fun--they wouldn't have lasted this long if they weren't high in entertainment value--but that sometimes gets lost in the drive to be "educated" and the fear of appearing ignorant. When folks allude to Phaedra, does your brain draw a blank? When conversation turns to the works of Pindar, do you wax noncommittal while waiting for a clue? That kind of trepidation puts a real pall on enjoying the humanity, magic, and humor of classic myths; taking you past that is what the Idiot's Guide series does best. They explore the roots of mythology, introduce the Greek and Roman gods and heroes, and tell a lot of great stories. A nonthreatening introduction for students, it renews a love of a tale well told, revitalizes an interest in reading stories aloud, and dusts off some lively yarns. And if reading up on Theseus and Heracles makes you better educated and more conversationally versatile, that's just icing on the cake. --Stephanie Gold

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic guide for those new to myths, or wanting an easy fun version of events.......2006-06-02

When I bought this book I had no idea what classical mythology was. I was writing a novel about Hercules though, and needed some mythological help, so I bought the book. Luckily for me, Classical mythology is the myths of ancient Greece and Rome.

This book has perfect, easy to read break-downs of even the most complicated myths. Often funny and always a pleasure to study, I found myself reading this at bedtime instead of a novel. It's almost a perfect work on the Greek Myths.

I had two problems with this book. One, I had no idea of the time line of the myths. Like, Hercules married Creon's daughter, but Creon's sister was married to Oedipus-so did Hercules grow up in a Thebes ruled by Oedipus or was that later on? I had no idea at all. Also a more complete family tree for the gods, sprites, titans and nymphs would have been good, but probably would have had to come in a form like a fold out map.

In short, fabulous book to get started on Greek and Roman myths, though more detailed study may be needed later on for clarification.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for classical mythology fans........2004-05-24

Like most books in the "Idiot's Guide" series, this guide to classical mythology is an excellent and comprehensive resource book for fans of Greek and Roman mythology.

There are several mythology reference books available in the market today but more serious and 'seasoned' fans and scholars will likely prefer THE COMPLETE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY by Kevin Osborn. We're not idiots, of course, but this book is meaty, entertaining and has more background information on the various gods/goddesses, heroes and stories. At over 350 pages, it has loads of information on various topics and stories in mythology. For instance, an entire chapter is dedicated to the Trojan War and Achilles and Odysseus also have their own chapters. With other mythology books, you would be lucky to have a few pages dedicated to Achilles alone.

Fans who want more than classical mythology will want to explore MYTHOLOGY FOR DUMMIES by Christopher Blackwell. This book also delves into the Arthurian legend, Norse myths, Beowulf, as well as world mythology in general (Chinese, Jewish, Hindu, etc).

These 2 books are all excellent. The choice lies on the readers' level of interests. I would recommend the "Complete Idiot's Guide" to those who enjoy Roman and Greek mythology or those who want to learn more about the Trojan War, Perseus, Jason and the Argonauts, Zeus, Hercules and the many other fascinating gods/goddesses and heroes of classical mythology.

                  5 out of 5 stars A Skeptic No More.......2000-06-19

I was a bit skeptical about purchasing my first "Complete Idiot's Guide," but this work won me over completely. It covers all the major aspects of Greek myth in a well-organized, easily understandable fashion. Authors Osborn and Burgess were not content with merely giving the "greatest hits" of myth, they include a wealth of detail and helpful historical/cultural notes. The "Least You Need to Know" sections at the end of each chapter are particularly nice. As a teacher of Classics I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who need an intro to Greek myth or anyone (like myself) who needs a handy reference.

5 out of 5 stars Never Thought Mythology Was Entertaining? Think Again!.......2000-01-20

For anyone who feels that mythology is just too complicated and boring, this is the perfect book to change your mind. A multitude of mythological topics are covered susinctly and with a great deal of humor. Information is neatly categorized and easy to follow. This would be a great book for students newly exposed to mythology or teachers needing a refresher course! And the real clincher for me? It was co-written by Dana Burgess, who was one of my favorite professors at Whitman College and instilled in me a passion for classics nearly equalling his own.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent content and presentation!.......2006-04-02

This book covers all main areas associated with a SharePoint implementation project, focusing on:
                  - Planning the deployment
                  - Deploying and integration with other platforms
                  - Monitoring and performance measurement
It addresses all topics comprehensively and discusses web part development, customisation and extensibility options. I concur with the prevailing sentiment amongst the other reviewers and would add that this is one of the best technical books of any kind that I have seen lying around!

                  1 out of 5 stars E-Book version.......2005-10-16

I ordered this book but didn't notice that it was an E-Book.
How can they charge the same price for an E-Book? Personally, I think the Acrobat Reader sucks when compared to a real paperback or regular old HTML.
Anyway, I figured I'd try to download it since I'd placed the order. WOW, there is Adobe DRM and MS Passport to deal with. Way too much trouble, I just called Amazon and cancelled the order.
Maybe the content of the book is OK, I don't know. If I were an author I don't think I'd let them offer my books in PDF form just yet.

SharePoint products have come together to produce a more tightly integrated and richer platform, upon which successful collaboration and information sharing can occur. Authors Kevin Laahs, Emer McKenna and Veli-Matti Vanamo have done an outstanding job in this book of covering almost every single aspect of SharePoint.

Laahs, McKenna and Vanamo begin this book by looking at the architecture of Windows SharePoint Services (WSS). In addition, the authors look at how a WSS site is used for the purpose of supporting multi author document collaboration. They also take a look at the architecture of SharePont Portable Server (SPS) and the key features that it brings to the collaboration landscape. Then, they focus on site personalization, delivered by WSS; profiles, delivered; personal sites, delivered by SPS; audience targeting, delivered by SPS; and, IM integration, delivered by Office 2003 and Messenger. The authors then look at the major components of search and how they can affect the features available to end users. Next, they introduce you to software and hardware architecture concepts that you should familiarize yourself with. Then, they take a brief look at the core server products you may want to integrate with your deployment and then focus on planning the features you can enable for SharePoint Products and Technologies. The authors continue by delving further into capacity and hardware planning for SharePoint Products and Technologies. Next, they cover the major aspects of deploying SharePoint Products and Technologies and walk you through a few example installation scenarios for both products. In addition, they cover some of the typical migration scenarios and tools available for you to perform them. The authors then look briefly at the architectures of both SPS 2001 and STS and how they evolved into the current SharePoint platform. Next, they examine the concept of Web Parts and Web Part Pages and where they fit into the overall SharePoint architecture. They then continue to expand upon the topic of deployment and explain the security framework surrounding Web Parts. In addition, the authors focus on the aspects of FrontPage and SharePoint integration that have the most impact. Finally, they take a look at some of the more advanced methods of customizing and extending your SharePoint implementation.

With the preceding in mind, the authors have done an excellent job of providing you with the basic knowledge and tools to begin applying the common customizations applicable to many organizations. Obviously, your requirements may be more specialized and require additional knowledge beyond what they were able to provide.

4 out of 5 stars Very good reference for SharePoint projects.......2005-07-08

I had to search and collate a lot of information off the MSDN library, couple of other SharePoint books and newsgroups -- which I could have easily obtained from this book at first glance.

The book approaches Microsoft's portal (and underlying) technology from an architecture perspective and dives into the various phases of any real SharePoint engagement; as promised by the book's title. I would recommend it for people new to SharePoint who are going to be involved seriously, and also to "experienced" people as a good source for reference.

If there was an advanced version of this book, I'd buy it!

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Companion.......2005-06-26

I found this book a very helpful reference and companion while implementing Sharepoint technologies
The authors have planned it carefully based on actual experience
Some other titles are just a copy of the help files or they tell you what you can easily find out yourself
                  Only drawbacks which (i forgive):
                  1. the index is not comprehensive, so it is sometimes difficult to find certain topics quickly
                  2. some issues are not addressed, viz. bugs, problems etc
                  3. a section on tips and tricks would have been very helpful (like adding friendly URLs in announcements)
All in all a great value for money and thumbs up to the authors.
