            Book Description

Critical realism has become increasingly important in the way organization and management is being studied. This book argues for an alternative to the prevailing ontology and shows how positivism and its empirical realist ontology can be abandoned without having to accept strong (anti-realist) social constructionism.

This book applies critical realism in four ways. First, in the removal of meta-theoretical obstacles that hinder the development of fruitful theoretical and empirical work. Second and third, as a meta-theoretical tool with which to develop appropriate methodological and theoretical frameworks which can be used to inform appropriate empirical work. And finally, all of this is applied across a broad range of subject areas including critical management studies, accountancy, marketing, health care management, operations research, the nature of work, human resource management, labor process theory, regional analysis and work and labor markets.

                Book Description

The egg is a chemical storehouse-within an incubating egg a complicated set of chemical reactions take place that convert the chemicals into a living animal. Using hen eggs as a model, this new text explores the use of eggs for food, industrial, and pharmaceutical applications. It covers the chemistry, biology, and function of lipids; carbohydrates; proteins; yolk antibody (IgY); and other materials of eggs. The novel merits of egg materials over others used in the same products are also discussed. These areas of egg technology have never been compiled before in one source.

                2 out of 5 stars Microbiology Mystified.......2007-07-15

What a waste of paper. Nothing useful in here at all. This is more for a third grader than an adult taking a college course. Find a better book or you will be sorrowfully disappointed.

                3 out of 5 stars good idea...but a lot of errors..........2006-03-18

The idea of a quick review is good...but the authors have to look for some errors, like the scientific names...and others.
But the content is not bad...
For a first contact in the field i think it is ok...

5 out of 5 stars Why can't they write textbooks like this.......2005-07-26

This book got me through microbiology with a B+. Any easy read. Tech jargon is defined and explained in every day English. Much better than the textbook they required us to buy and for a fraction of its price. Can't go wrong buying this.

5 out of 5 stars Got me through my microbiology course.......2005-07-13

Let's say that I'll never be a microbiologist, but I needed to get through microbiology to stay in nursing school. Microbiology Demystified is getting me through my microbiology course. I take it to class so I can lookup anything I don't understand. This book is right on target so far. I've been pulling a B+. Now if they only had a demystified book for my other nursing courses I would be home free.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this instead of the micro textbooks.......2005-07-13

This was a great find. I was talking a microbiology course this summer as part of my RN program, but the teacher was confusing and the textbook was too technical. I took a chance and got a hold of a copy of this book. They should have used this as the textbook. Everything is written clearly, perfectly at the level I needed. I have a friend who is taking micro in the fall and she is going to use this book instead of buying the text.

After 10 years of failed attempts at learning to swim, this book did the trick.
Excellent step by step approach builds confidence and avoids the "just do it" leap that is so hard to make.
Each step begins with the why and the what. These are followed by drills that gradually put all the parts together. The drills are very well thought out, you are learning all the time, and you never get pushed out to the ragged edge where it all falls apart.
                Thank you David Thomas!

4 out of 5 stars A solid foundation for the adult non-swimmer........1998-09-13

At almost 40 years of age, I had a fear of the water. There are few books on the subject that are detailed and explicit. With "Swimming steps to success" at the pool-side I was able to learn that I can float, and with confidence, learn the basic effective strokes. I am indebted to Mr. David G. Thomas, he succeeded where my busy swimming instructor could not.

2 out of 5 stars Poorly illustrated. Not very helpful........2000-04-02

I bought this book to improve my crawl stroke and to learn butterfly. This book does not help me.

The book, 8.5x11, 159 pages, has 18 chapters ("steps"). Just to give an example, the butterfly stroke occupies 4 chapters (the dolphin kick, the arm pull, the coordination, and the turn). In all these chapters there isn't a single series of complete illustration. All the figures only show this or that segment of the whole process.

What's more, the drawings in the butterfly section don't even match the cover photo. The same poor quality illustration is all over the book.

If you need a book to tell you how to swim like a professional, I would recommend one with actual photos (instead of drawings) of both frontal and side view. "Competitive Swimming" (from Sports Illustrated) is a better book in this sense. If you are already a pro, the final chaptor "whatermanship" may interest you. It shows how do do a few fun water games, like, forming a multiperson centipede...

A good book if this is you are looking for a simple to understand basic book. Frankly like many other sports, you cannot just swim by looking at the pictures. I wish the book has more step-by-step pictures.

Good pictures, good directions, good systems of instructions. It corrected my bad habits. IT IS WORTH IT.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Guide for Editors.......2007-03-12

I liked this book so much I bought another for my managing editor. It's quick, succinct and easy to follow. Particularly useful is the author's list of substitutes for overused words such as "utilize," -- a word I'd never use(shoot me if you see it!), but which a lot of would-be writers do. I bought my copy used and I'm sure I'll be getting a newer copy soon; I'm constantly looking something up. If you edit yourself or other people, "Edit Yourself" belongs on your desk, right next to Strunk and White.

                  4 out of 5 stars No-frills, straightforward guide........2007-01-04

This handy, concise manual helps those interested in brushing their writing styles to build reference lists of common proofreading adjustments. First the author covers daily writing problems related to fat, inconsistency and failure to keep parallel grammatical constructions. Then, in part II, he presents an A-Z word and phrase list to cut, change and compare. "Edit Yourself" is a must-have desk companion.

                  5 out of 5 stars Write professionally.......2004-12-12

This is a handy, concise, and easy-to-use book. In it, Bruce Ross-Larson teaches you how to become a stronger writer. Drawing upon his experience as a professional editor, the author provides a long list of crutch words and phrases, that is, words and phrases that are often overused and that weaken one's writing. He then suggests replacements used by professional writers and journalists. Every aspiring writer should own a copy.

                  5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2004-03-17

Although I believe there is no easy way to edit yourself, (because your simply to close to your own writing) this book is definitely a start. I really like the format of this book. It shows you a problem-AND a solution. That's what makes this book different than many others on the market. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to use, clear, and concise........2002-05-31

I am a professor in a business school. I have recommended this book (and its previous edition) for more than ten years to students who want to improve their writing.

If you want to make your writing clear and concise, you will find it hard to beat this book as a desk reference. It is well organized, easy to use, and concise. The book is itself a great example of good writing.

Do you forget when to use "although" and "while"? Do you forget to avoid using rhetorical questions in your writing? (Oops!) This book has an alphabetically organized list of common errors. You can look under "although" or "while" to find the rules for choosing between these words.

After reading thousands of student papers, correspondence from businesspersons, and memos from faculty, I am convinced that the single thing a writer can do to improve his or her writing is to avoid passive voice. This book has a clear definition of passive voice with examples and guidance on how to avoid falling into this rut. It also points out the few situations in which a writer would want to use passive voice intentionally.

The book is well organized and useful to a wide range of writers. Truly terrible writers will find that the book can help them move their writing up a notch. Mediocre writers can find one or two things in the book that they can change about their writing and become good writers. Good writers will find the book dog-eared in a short time as they look up rules when they know a rule exists but they cannot quite remember what the rule says.

I have worn out two copies of this book. It's great.

                  Book Description

Twas the night (okay, more like the week) before Christmas, and all through Pine Cove, California, people are busy buying, wrapping, packing, and generally getting into the holiday spirit.

But not everybody is feeling the joy. Little Joshua Barker is in desperate need of a holiday miracle. No, he's not on his deathbed. But Josh is sure that he saw Santa take a shovel to the head, and now the seven-year-old has only one prayer: Please, Santa, come back from the dead.

But hold on! There's an angel waiting in the wings. (Wings, get it?) It's none other than the Archangel Raziel come to Earth seeking a small child with a wish that needs granting. Unfortunately, our angel's not sporting the brightest halo in the bunch, and before you can say "Kris Kringle" he's botched his sacred mission and sent the residents of Pine Cove headlong into Christmas chaos, culminating in the most hilarious and horrifying holiday party the town has ever seen.

Only Christopher Moore, the man who brought you the outrageous lost gospel Lamb and the hysterical fish tale Fluke, could have devised a new holiday classic that tugs at the heartstrings and serves up a healthy slice of fruitcake to boot.

Christmas crept into Pine Cove like a creeping Christmas thing: dragging garland, ribbon, and sleigh bells, oozing eggnog, reeking of pine, and threatening festive doom like a cold sore under the mistletoe.

'Twas the night (okay, more like the week) before Christmas, and all through the tiny community of Pine Cove, California, people are busy buying, wrapping, packing, and generally getting into the holiday spirit. It is the hap-hap-happiest time of the year, after all.

But not everybody is feeling the joy. Little Joshua Barker is in desperate need of a holiday miracle. No, he's not on his deathbed; no, his dog hasn't run away from home.

Unfortunately, our angel's not sporting the brightest halo in the bunch, and before you can say ""Kris Kringle,"" he's botched his sacred mission and sent the residents of Pine Cove headlong into Christmas chaos, culminating in the most hilarious and horrifying holiday party the town has ever seen.

Only Christopher Moore, the man who brought you the outrageous lost gospel Lamb and the hysterical fish tale Fluke could have devised a new holiday classic that tugs at the heartstrings and serves up a healthy slice of fruitcake to boot.

Move over, Charles Dickens -- it's Christopher Moore time.

I had this book on cd and was standing in line at the DMV so I was able to listen to the entire book while waiting. Just kidding. I was laughing out loud and getting funny looks. I told those who were not trying to avoid eye contact with me they have to buy this book is is just too funny.

4 out of 5 stars MY Angle on the Angel.......2007-08-24

I'm a huge Christopher Moore fan, have enjoyed all of his writings to date, and this book met all my expectations of wit, wry humor, and warped storylines featuring many of the eccentric personalities I've grown to know and adore in Pine Cove and from other Moore books. I recommend starting with "Practical Demonkeeping" (the first book in Christopher Moore's series and the reader's intro to Pine Cove) and following his array of books in the order he's written them. All are winners, just some more special than others. Enjoy!

                  5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Phanasy.......2007-08-23

Should you wish to be cheered and if you can take off beat humour, then this CD is for you. The presentation and voices are unusually good and the use of slightly weird Christmas music adds to the glow. The story is a joy, prepostorous, wild and it makes fun of so much that is tripe. You'll laugh, even if your alone.

                  5 out of 5 stars Absolutely hysterical.......2007-07-25

I decided to buy this book after reading half of the first paragraph -- and it just got better from there. I read it twice in the first week. Check out the "Search Inside" function on this one!

The Stupidest Angel is funny, clever, and surprizing. I got to like the characters; in fact I'd like to be their friend. They are real, vunerable, funny and really screwed up.
