Book Description

A new movement of 'anti-globalists', in Time Magazine's words (24 April 2000), now 'oppose corporate dominion over the planet's poor and disfranchised'. Naming the Enemy is the first systematic documentation of this international resistance to transnational corporations and globalization which has so recently burst into the public gaze with the street protests in Seattle, Washington, London and Prague.

A wide and heterogeneous range of social movements now oppose the very fundamentals of market capitalism. Their challenge is beginning, Amory Starr shows, to amount to a sweeping critique of its purposes and practice. She explains how these movements understand their enemies and what sort of future they envision. There are, she suggests, three basic types:

· Movements trying to constrain corporate power through democratic institutions and direct action;

· Movements attempting a completely different kind of 'globalization from below' in which corporations will be reshaped in the service of new international democratic structures that will be populist, participatory and just;

· Movements seeking to delink their localities and communities from the global economy and rebuild instead small-scale socieites in which large corporations have no role at all.

This new phenomenon has received scant media or scholarly attention. But it is likely to become much more important politically as the globalized economy dominated by giant corporations and institutions like the World Bank and IMF fails to deliver on jobs, social justice, Third World development and the environment. The course of this new kind of political struggle will have huge implications for human welfare and civil liberties.

This unique and important book is relevant to activists as well as students and scholars of globalization, new social movements and political economy.

5 out of 5 stars A primer on the the WORLD WIDE anti-corporate movement.......2001-01-31

Amory Starr's highly readable "Naming the Enemy" explains the global movement against corporations. Using impeccably researched case studies, she shows how local movements against local problems turned into a global movement for social justice. However, this is no hagiography: Starr gives the movement an analysis every bit as critical as that of the system it struggles against. A well balanced, crucial book.

5 out of 5 stars Global perspective, global understanding.......2001-01-31

If you read Amory Starr's book, you know that the protests in Seattle weren't the first against corporate globalization. "Naming the Enemy" explains how this movement has grown from local campaigns against local problems to a planet-wide movement against a companies that turn people and the environment into commodities. Impeccably researched but written without using academic jargon, readable without being condescending, "Naming the Enemy" is one of the most important political science books in recent memory.

    Book Description

In this introduction to theory and method, students of organization will find a comprehensive view of the key theories in their field, combined with a toolkit of guidelines linking these to the different methods available for analyzing and interpreting organizational life. Distinguishing `the external society' and the `internal society', Antonio Strati sheds light on the different contexts that shape organizational life and the different levels of analysis that may be used. By showing the many levels at which organizations function and can be understood this book provides an invaluable introduction to analysis and research for advanced students. Recent concepts such as `the organization as hypertext'; `communities of practice'; 'tacit knowledge'; and organizational learning; are explored as ways of approaching organizations: this book shows how to link such approaches to appropriate methodologies in order to achieve insightful analysis.

3 out of 5 stars Flashes of brilliance.......2007-02-09

What are organizations? Why do they exist? Are they created to serve some purpose or do the organizations create the purposes for which they shall exist? What are some of the quintessential theories of organizational studies and how can the researchers conduct research in the field? These are some of the questions that the author seeks to answer. As the name itself suggests, the book is divided in two sections. First part deals with issues in organization studies and second with methodology in empirical research. His principal concern, however, is that the book will stimulate the reader to look at organizational studies afresh prompting interest in understanding of organizations.

The first thing that struck me was literally the first line in the book, a theme that is continuously repeated in the book. In the preface, the author begins by stating that the study of organizations as social contexts concerns itself with fragments of organizational life, not with its totality or essential reality, nor with its totality or essential reality, nor with a representative sample of it. The author cites continuing change or flux to be the reason for it: Just like Heraclitus river, which cannot be stepped in twice because the water constantly flows and is never the same, so the same organization cannot be known twice. While I agree that the most studies in the field, like in any other discipline, focus on specific issues, I believe the purpose ultimately is to promote our understanding of organizations in general. The water in the river may change, but the river doesnt. Not in the short run anyway. It still would carry the similar kind of particles, minerals, pollutants and nutrients from day to day. Over a long run, these may drastically change, but studying the river would still help us understand changes, positive and negative.

The author further claims that it is neither correct nor opportune to compare heterogeneous fragments, except for elements so well-circumstantiated that they yield some sort of generic information about organizational life. Again, while it is true that the organizational studies have to be understood in their context and that the most writers on the subject err on the side of being too certain and definitive in their policy prescriptions, the author errs on the side of too little. I believe that the different studies have different levels of generalizability, which the author fails to account for. His use of a dramatic metaphor overstates the phenomenon of flux and fragmentation in studying organizations. If it were true to such an extent, we would need to substantially reinvent the wheel every time a study on organizations is conducted.

The first part of the book mainly provides a historical survey of organization theories and how they evolved. The author discusses theories, models, paradigms and metaphors commonly used in the literature. I am of the opinion that he does the best justice to the classical theories- scientific management, bureaucracy and human relations schools- the discussions are in-depth and the insights meaningful, which is particularly true in case of his treatment of Weber. I also liked his coverage of non-American writers and their research, which most textbooks on management tend to ignore or underplay.

However, the most original idea in the first few chapters is the authors own concept of organizations without walls. To quote him, The organization without walls is an organization brought to light by empirical research. It consists of organizational phenomena which resist precise definition because it is impossible to determine whether they are some sort of association, a collective movement, an outright community, or society tout court. The existence and growth of such organizations is indeed a challenge for organization researchers.

As discussed afore, the book ignites some flames while discussing classical theories, but fails to live up to its promise when it comes to other theories which are furnished in short paragraphs without much in-depth discussion. I would have also loved to see some information about big debates in the organization theory, the contribution of the theory to development of the field, the status of present research and the opportunities for future research, especially since the author begins with a stated objective of regenerating interest in organizational studies.

I was also intrigued by two other notable omissions. It was surprising to find no mention of the agency theory anywhere in the book, which arguably is one of the most important paradigms for research in the field today. The book makes no mention of the works of Fama & Jenson, Jenson & Meckling, Amihud & Lev, Eissenhardt, Shapiro or any of other hundreds of agency theorists. I am not sure whether it is because the author doesnt consider it important enough or whether he is not comfortable enough in handling the subject. I shall return to this a little later.

The author mentions that the study of concept of external environment is fragmentary, and it is difficult to carry out empirically. According to him, it is treated from three standpoints: the environment is residual category or consists of multiple and multiform networks or it doesnt exist (P21). There is no mention of the work of researchers like Dess & Beard, Dess & Rasheed and Sharfman & Dean, who have provided empirical measures like munificence, uncertainty and complexity to measure the task environment. Similarly, while the author mentions the institutional theory, he fails to mention the stream of research that provides us with the empirical measures on institutional environments.

These are notable omissions. While reading the book, I also gained an impression, time and again, that the author was biased against or uncomfortable in empirical research in general and empirical research based on archival, secondary sources in particular. Let me illustrate this with few examples. He states measurement------- is an endeavor to give operationality to concepts by translating them into measures and using these as variables----------- a notoriously flawed method with which to represent organizational phenomena-------(P 164). Again, archival research is not properly a method of empirical organizational research because data and information are collected, rather than being directly generated in the course of organizational research (P134). And yet again, secondary sources method----- draws on analyses and data collection by others, and is appropriate for studying the work of mangers who are unavailable for the researchers fieldwork. But it has the disadvantage of the incompleteness and inappropriateness of the data collected (P 137). I believe the author fails to account for a large body of research which is possible with archival information, especially in this day and age of information revolution.

If we look at the two omissions, agency theory and environmental measures, cited above in the light of this fact, it is clear to see a common thread. As we know, much of the research in these fields is based on archival research, which makes me believe that the author is perhaps biased against or a shade uncomfortable in handling empirical research. However, there is something to be said about his chapter on empirical research. He provides detailed examples from classical research for various research methods like Minzbergs structured interview method, Cohen, et als simulation, etc, which is very useful for those planning their own research. The best chapter in the book, however, is the last one on qualitative research, which furnishes at quite some length the information on how to go about doing such research, what methods to use, which softwares would be useful and so on.

Who is this book most useful for? PhD students in sociology looking for an introductory book on organizational sociology would find the book quite useful. PhD students in management, interested in streams such as social or organizational networks or qualitative research, may also find it very useful. General readers may skim and skip the book. For other readers with more advanced interests or those looking to supplement their knowledge from this book from other sources, in my opinion, Central perspectives and debates in organization theory by Graham Astley and Andrew Van De Ven (Administrative Science Quarterly, 1983) might be a good place to start at.

Overall, Theory and Method in Organization Studies by Strati is a decent and easy read with flashes of brilliance.

    3 out of 5 stars A org-theory book for Non-beginners.......2004-11-23

Antonio Strati book is an introductory text to the field of organization theory, and thus it is comparable to similar books, for example, Hatch (1997) Pfeffer (1997) and Scott (2003). Strati's book has a different flavour, for example, it takes a firm stand on the temporality of organizations, emphasizing that "organizational phenomena are in constant flux" (p. xi), and that the same organization can never be known twice. This position gives us an awareness of both the limited and subjective nature of our knowledge of organizations, and that it is not opportune to compare heterogeneous fragments of organizational life.
When evaluating the book one must acknowledge that it deals with several organizational issues in non-traditional ways. For example, it makes an enormous effort to convince us that there is not one, but many organizational realities, as well as in demonstrating that organizations are not rational entities, but worlds with conflicts, disagreement, many goals, loose couplings between groups and actors. Also, it fleshes out the distinction between old and new ways of thinking about organizations, and shows that empirical investigation of organizations is problematic. Yet, one also have to think about the students that could benefit from the book as an introductory text. Based on the complexity of the text, I believe that they should be of the more mature kind, for example it could be students in sociology who need an introduction to organizational sociology. Or students with experience of organizational life, as the book often presumes such experience of the readers. For example, chapter one makes direct references to the way organizations work, but these direct references are not easy to understand without real experience of organizations. In conclusion, the book seems to not be suited for students without any prior experience in either organizational life or in the field of sociology.

      Book Description

Fish farming has increased in status equal to cattle farming as a source of food for mankind. In developing countries fish and shellfish provide inexpensive animal protein, while in developed countries aquaculture is expected to produce more fish and shellfish as a source of low-calorie protein for health conscious individuals. In such an era, knowledge of fish farming technologies of different countries, strongly influenced by cultural factors, is of valuable importance. The primary production techniques of fish farming in Japan described here have an emphasis on practical technology. This second edition reflects the changes in both quantity of production and technology in Japanese aquaculture. The statistics have been revised and the text rewritten to suit the current status of aquaculture in Japan; new aquaculture species have been included and discussions on marine ranching and biotechnology for aquaculture added.

        Book Description

A remarkable tale of how a lone researcher in the Spanish countryside discovered how brain cells communicate.

Two doctors, the Spaniard Cajal and the Italian Golgi, were racing against each other to find out what brain cells looked like and how they managed to communicate with one another. Both did their most important research in labs set up on their kitchen tables, for lack of better facilities; and both made landmark findings that led to their jointly receiving the 1906 Nobel Prize. Yet one man would find that neurons communicated over a gap, later named the "synapse," while the other would die convinced that every brain cell connected to the next. From Parkinson's to neurosurgery, from the mechanics of memory to clinical depression, modern medicine is ever indebted to the one who interpreted the elusive—and rather extraordinary—anatomy of the nerve cell. This is the story not only of one of the nineteenth century's greatest discoveries but also of the frailty, perseverance, and creativity of human beings. 13 illustrations.

        5 out of 5 stars Neuroscience history.......2007-05-13

One of the best ways to learn a science is to learn the history of that science. Like "In Search of Memory", "Nerve Endings" is a biographical work about the life and scientific contributions of a Nobel prizing winning neuroscientist. The author documents the 19th century debate about the existence and purpose of the synapse and the personal rivalry between Dr. Santiago Ramon y Cajal and Dr. Camillo Golgi. I would recommend this book to any neuroscience student.

5 out of 5 stars On the shoulders of giants.......2007-01-07

In this engaging and well written book, part history of science, part biography, Rapport focuses on the intellectual war that eventually led to the discovery of the neuron theory. The neuron theory - the idea that the nervous system consists of discrete cellular units (neurons) - was one of the key, early discoveries of neuroscience. It has radically accelerated our understanding of how the brain works and it has since had wide-ranging implications, for neurosurgery, psychiatry and other fields.

At heart of the story lie two characters: a charismatic Spanish artist and scientist, Santiago Ramon y Cajal and an equally brilliant, but dogmatic, Italian scientist, Camillo Golgi. These two men (both of whom were awarded the Nobel prize in 1906) were the representatives of two opposing scientific camps who were engaged in an acrimonious intellectual battle during the second half of the 19th century. The point of contention was the structural anatomy of the nervous system. Cajal represented the `neuronist' camp, who claimed that the nervous system consisted of individual cellular units that communicated with one another across tiny gaps (these gaps are called synapses). In contrast, Golgi headed the `reticularists' who held that the entire nervous system was linked in one giant network, that there were no individual cells that were separated from each other.

Besides making many important discoveries in the field of biology (discovery of the Golgi apparatus, the Golgi tendon organ) Camillo Golgi also invented a method for preparing slides of nervous tissue - called silver (Golgi) staining. Silver staining allowed scientists to begin making detailed analyses of nervous tissue for the first time, using light microscopes. Golgi contributed much to the early study of neurohistology, but he confused certain branching neuronal processes (the axon collaterals) for widely ramifying protrusions that he thought connected the entire nervous system in one large network. He used this observation to support his erroneous reticularist theory; at the same time, Cajal was using and improving Golgi's silver staining method to develop the opposing (and as it turns out, correct) theory of neuronal structure. Cajal was a visionary genius, "fascinated by the bewitchment of the infinitely small." His contribution to neuroanatomy is immeasurable. He used his considerable artistic skills to complete extremely detailed drawings of the nervous system that were used in textbooks for years to come. Unlike Golgi, Cajal did not think that the nerve cells were all connected in one diffuse net. He deduced the existence of the synaptic gap from the way that the terminal axons of presynaptic neurons and the dendrites of postsynaptic neurons appeared to fit each other so well (the synapse was not actually seen until the arrival of electron microscopy in the first half of the twentieth century).
But more than helping to clarify the anatomy of the nervous system, Cajal was remarkably prescient in putting forth theories about the physiology of the nervous system as well. He formulated the law of dynamic polarization, which says that the current flow within neurons is unidirectional - electrical signals are received at the dendrites, sent to the cell body and then conducted along the length of the axon. (This law is actually not quite correct but it still remains a basic principle of neural function and is presented in all neuroscience textbooks). Cajal also speculated about the chemical nature of inter-neuronal communication and made predictions about the ways in which neurons grow from their neuroblast precursors.
The significance of Cajal's work was by no means immediate, among other reasons because of national chauvinism. Cajal was a Spaniard and in 19th century science it was mainly Germany, Italy and France who dictated the intellectual landscape. The amazing thing about Cajal is that he made many of his great discoveries working in solitude, his important publications being ignored for years.

This book is a great companion-piece to Elliot Valenstein's "The War of the Soups and Sparks" and should be read prior to that book as it covers chronologically earlier events. Both books will be of great interest to those involved in the neurosciences. Both books also do a great job of showing how science develops in particular sociohistorical and technological contexts and how it is shaped by the personalities and temperaments of its practitioners.

3 out of 5 stars An Interesting and Easy Read.......2006-07-23

This book provides a highly readable review of the emergence of the so-called "Neuron Doctrine." Roughly speaking this doctrine claims that neurons are anatomically distinct and constitute independent functional units. In revised forms the Neuron Doctrine and related principles like "the Law of Dynamic Depolarization" still appear to form part of neuroscience's theoretical back-bone. (As witnessed by their explicit introduction in text books like Kandel et als "Principles of Neural Science."

The book focuses on the life and work of Cajal, to whom early evidence for the Doctrine is often attributed, and on Cajal's controversy with Golgi. The latter was a "reticularist" who thought that neurons form a continuous network or "reticulum."

While "Nerve Endings" is a fun and easy read, readers who are interested in the precise content of the Neuron Doctrine, how it has been interpreted in different ways, and how it is to a certain extent currently being revised may want to look elsewhere, as there is relatively little discussion of this. (See e.g. Bullock et al "The Neuron Doctrine, Redux", Science Vol 310, 4 Nov 2005. Jones "Golgi, Cajal and the Neuron Doctrine", Journal of the History of the Neurosciences Vol 8, no 2, 1999)

I would also have preferred to have references to litterature in the main text rather than have to look up the page numbers in the final "notes" section.

These are minor complaints, however, and the book is certainly a fine introduction to the life of a great scientist and an exciting period in the history of neuroscience!

4 out of 5 stars History in the making, the discovery of the synapse.......2006-02-20

A very well written, and nicely illustrated history of the early years of research on the synapse, illuminating the differences in opinion between Ramon y Cajal and Golgi. Which controversy, in the end, has overshadowed the multitude of work Golgi did.

5 out of 5 stars An intriguing survey of parallel lives and very different perspectives.......2005-10-05

Dr. Richard Rappaport's study of the discovery of the nerve synapse Nerve Endings also presents the story of two doctors who shared the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1906 yet were separated by geographical and psychological differences. The parallel lives and discoveries of Santiago Ramon y Cajal and Camillo Golgi provides an intriguing survey of two men whose similar discoveries and investigative processes led to the science of neurosurgery and better understanding of neurological diseases. An intriguing survey of parallel lives and very different perspectives.

The guide says right on it, for BEGINNING naturalists.
Not to be confused with a comprehensive, highly detailed, professional field guide.
It's SUPPOSED to be for kids!

3 out of 5 stars Only good for kids........2000-08-25

While it does cover a wide range of wildlife, the drawings themselves are not very realistic - they represent the animal, yes, but not accurately enough to really be used as a teaching field guide, even for non-magors. It'd probably be ok for younger kids, though. There were some magor types of wildlife that I thought should be included that were not (red-tail hawk, box turtle), as well as some that I don't know why they're in there (humpback whale, viruses). The descriptions were short, and included very little as to where the animals were actually found (no idea of range). The plants section was really tiny as well. Needless to say, I'm still searching for a field guide to use in my class.

          Book Description

The New York Jets have not basked in an abundance of pride and glory. Sure, they were led to the "promised land" by Joe Namath with the stunning Super Bowl VII upset victory that capped the magical 1969 season. Since then, however, the Jets have careened through life alternating between bumbling and embarrassing, maddening and entertaining, while all along the way teasing their ardent fan base so tantalizingly that, rather sadistically, it has become a way of life. In Tales from the Jets Sideline, author Mark Cannizzaro takes readers on a journey, through his eyes and the eyes of the subjects he has covered, across the maze of musings, controversial happenstances, and occasional brilliance the Jets have displayed during the years he has followed the franchise. Fans will be taken through some of the crazy Bruce Coslet years that featured a series of extreme highs and lows. Fans will also recall Coslet's successor, Pete Carroll, who lasted only a year after the team's late owner, Leon Hess, had a revelation by the name of Rich Kotite while vacationing in the islands. Jets fans will never forget Kotite, but for all of the wrong reasons. The Jets saw some light after the colossal failed experiment that was Kotite, and that light was Bill Parcells and his incredible band of assistant coaches who came within 30 minutes in Denver of bringing the Jets back to where Namath had brought them some 30 years earlier. The Parcells era, however, proved to be as much of a tease as anything in Jets history, because he opted not to finish the job, leaving coaching and soon after leaving the Jets in a messy divorce. Enter Herman Edwards, the energetic fireball of a head coach who is currently trying tomake Jets fans forget about all of the previous angst and tantalizing teases they have endured since Joe Willie's memorable triumph.

2 out of 5 stars The New York Jets in Brief, Since 1993.......2005-03-21

Tales from the Jets Sideline is a very disappointing book. It's almost difficult to know where to start in detailing its many shortcomings. Jets fans and football fans in general will find very little here worth bothering with.

But first a little bit about what the book is about, which unfortunately isn't much given the rich and varied history of this team. Cannizzaro essentially serves up a hodgepodge of short vignettes about the New York Jets players, coaches, and owner from 1993-2003. Most of the tidbits are nothing new, nothing particularly interesting, and seem to be items gleaned from the "Sports In Brief" section of the newspaper. He probably should have called the book, "Jets in Brief, Since 1993."

The book is organized in chapters primarily around the Jets many coaches with the owner and a few prominent players thrown in for good measure. So we go through the laundry list of chapters: Bruce Coslet, Pete Carroll, Boomer Esiason (QB), Rich Kotite, Leon Hess (owner), Bill Parcells, Curtis Martin (RB), Bill Belichick, Al Groh, K and Q (Keyshawn Johnson and Wayne Chrebet), Chad Pennington (QB), and Herman Edwards. Thus we get snippets and snapshots of these particular coaches, players, and their teams.

If there is a theme to the book it is that the Jets, since 1993, have been cursed with very lousy coaching, with the exception of Bill Parcells. Parcells resurrected the Jets, took them to the AFC Championship game after the 1997 season, then abandoned the team to drift in a mire of mediocrity for another few years. But it ends on a hopeful note with praise for current coach Herman Edwards and the bright future of quarterback Chad Pennington.

The most interesting part of the book was the impact the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 had on this team and the fact Jets players were ready to boycott a game if the NFL had not decided to postpone the season by one week after the attacks. I could almost add the chapters on the contentious relationship between Keyshawn Johnson and Wayne Chrebet and the surreal episode of Bill Beleihick resigning almost immediately after being named head coach but there was no inside information and nothing new in either of these stories.

The bottom line is this book just isn't very good and tells us nothing even a somewhat casual fan doesn't already know about the New York Jets. The New York Jets have a rich history and hardly any of it is detailed here. The book doesn't even pick up the Jets story until 1993 but the team has been in existence since 1959. So there is no Joe Namath and his guarantee of the Jets' improbable upset win over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, the highlight of the team's history. There's no Freeman McNeil, Wesley Walker, Joe Klecko and Mark Gastineau and their Gang Green defense. In short, we miss out on hearing about most of the Jets greatest moments and greatest players.

While this book is short and quick a read, I can't imagine even Jets fans find too much of interest here.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT AND COMPREHENSIVE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER WELL KNOWN TO EVERY PRACTICING CATHOLIC.......2007-06-08

Considering the majority of Hispanic Catholics in these United States, this book is truly a God-send from the great Catholic Liturgical Press based in Collegeville, Minnesota, bearing the copyright of the Order of Saint Benedict. The editor who gathered this excellent and comprehensive collection and also illustrated beautifully throughout this prayer book is a priest who for a quarter century has "served as teacher and spitirual director at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary, Boynton Beach, Florida" and who "dedicate(s) this book of prayers to all ( . . .) those people who through the years have shared the vision of St. Vincent's as a bilingual seminary and have supported and contributed to the efforts to make it so. (p. iii)" Certainly for the future of our American and Catholic Church we can do no nobler deed than to support and contribute to and pray for this important and bilingual seminary in its foresight and vocational development, if we are to survive as one Church at all in a time of shrinking congregations, shrinking vocational development and shrinking though eschatalogical vision.

I was thrilled to find within these pages so many familiar prayers, including not only the famous Prayer of Saint Francis we sing so often at Mass (at least still here in Mexico), but also the intense Prayer of the Blessed Charles de Foucauld. This in itself should show the kind of all-inclusive nature of this surprisingly brief yet comprehensive and well chosen work. Here we also find in both languages the basic prayers of the Holy Rosary (also so familiar to me in Mexico) as well as scriptural passages to accompany each mystery (of course this was published before the promulgation of the fourth set of mysteries which so few know and say anyway), along with the opening and ending prayers, including the Salve Regina in both languages (wow, do I miss the Latin version!) which we also say after every Mass in Mexico, which bears special import for me in exile.

We have here everyday prayers, including prayers of Saint Joseph, Guardian Angel, dearly departed, etc. and prayers for meals. This book could also be used to fulfill a Breviary obligation (as if such a joy could be considered an obligation!) as it also contains morning, mid-day and evening prayers complete with all the ritual and common prayers, such as the powerful morning Canticle of Zechariah (Benedictus), Psalm 23 at mid-day, and the evening Magnificat. This book also contains the Angelus in both languages (English and Spanish), to go along with these daily prayers.

Along with the Rosary we find the Way of the Cross (and please permit me to suggest you accompany this profound and personal prayer with the hand of the great Brazilian theologian Father Boff and his Way of the Cross--Way of Justice). The regular prayers at Mass are also included and so this prayer book also serves as Missal although without the three cycles of readings. You can follow the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass by this book, in either language, like in the old days of our Bilingual missals in Latin and English! Both Nicene and Apostles Creeds are included here in both tongues, repeating in full the Apostles Creed although it also appears in the Rosary section, etc. Also included in this section are over seven pages of prayers for before and after receiving Holy Communion, very extensive prayers focusing us inwardly upon the true meaning of our Eucharistic celebration. Again these are all traditional yet often forgotten prayers. The Divine Praises once well known during the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament end this section. We still recite these regularly in Mexico, needless to say, and so I am glad to have this book. Some prayers, such as Alma de Christo, santificame, I have only heard previously in Spanish and am glad to see them here.

A long section for the Sacrament of Reconciliation follows (although sacramentally it ought to proceed the Mass!), with a private examination of conscience, etc., and with the common variations in the ritual between Spanish and English, as I have found to be true: The Spanish precedes the shared sign of the Cross with ejaculations of the BVM. Very extensive prayers are attached in this book to this essential sacrament of reconciliation and this grant us solid spiritual nourishment and strength in this process of conversion and forgiveness.

This very comprehensive book closes with various prayers for the sick of all ages and stages, and a long section of prayers for the dead and dying. Thus this book is a great consolation and help, although I would have liked to see the Seven Penitential Psalms at this point, but we can always look them up if we remember which they are!

As you can see this book is extrememly useful to any Catholic, even if you refer to the English pages alone. I am grateful for those pages which I can use with my congregation in Mexico, which they know from birth by heart, but which I still stumble over. But anyone can find here a good source of prayers and our traditional, orthodox rituals and sacraments, even if you only read the English, and it is a very fine resource to carry with you to Church, on the bus, everywhere you go, including into Mexico, or your local barrio.

            Book Description

At the end of World War II, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, fearing that retreating Germans would consolidate large numbers of troops in an Alpine stronghold and from there conduct a protracted guerilla war, turned U.S. forces toward the heart of Franconia, ordering them to cut off and destroy German units before they could reach the Alps.

Opposing this advance was a conglomeration of German forces headed by SS-Gruppenführer Max Simon, a committed National Socialist who advocated merciless resistance. Under the direction of officers schooled in harsh combat in Russia, the Germans succeeded in bringing the American advance to a grinding halt.

Caught in the middle were the people of Franconia. Historians have accorded little mention to this period of violence and terror, but it provides insight into the chaotic nature of life while the Nazi regime was crumbling. Neither German civilians nor foreign refugees acted simply as passive victims caught between two fronts. Throughout the region people pressured local authorities to end the senseless resistance and sought revenge for their tribulations in the "liberation" that followed.

Stephen G. Fritz examines the predicament and outlook of American GI's, German soldiers and officials, and the civilian population caught in the arduous fighting during the waning days of World War II. Endkampf is a gripping portrait of the collapse of a society and how it affected those involved, whether they were soldiers or civilians, victors or vanquished, perpetrators or victims.

5 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise about an Unpleasant Topic.......2005-05-31

Stephen G. Fritz's "Endkampf" was an unexpected surprise. While I began reading the book with low expectations--the University Press of Kentucky has published a number of 2nd rate works of military history--I soon realized that there was much here that had not been previously explored in any detail.

What Fritz does, and what makes his book worthwhile, is that he concentrates on the triple relationships of U.S. Military versus German Military (and sometimes Nazi leadership), of U.S. Military versus German Civilians, and German Military/Nazi leadership versus German Civilians, all in the context of a rapidly changing military situation and a collapsing Reich. As the U.S. Army drove through Franconia like a tsunami (although sometimes sharply resisted by the remnants of the German Army and SS), German civilians found themselves freed--sometimes unwillingly--from the coccoon of the Reich. The decisions they would make might come back to haunt them, as the local military situation swept back and forth. To place a white flag from a building might save your life in one situation, or mean certain death in another.

By focusing sharply on one small region--Franconia--Fritz is able to go into great detail and to tease out some of the nuances, as well as supporting anecdotes, that makes this civil-military study special. While he occasionally goes on unwelcome detours--such as tracing the Niebelungen--in general, the book is a pleasure to read, full of information most readers--even military historians--are unlikely to have come across before. Also pleasing is the fact that his account does not stop on May 8, 1945, but continues for some time. His account of post-war German resistance reveals a Germany not nearly as pacified as the official U.S. Army volume on the occupation of Germany suggests.

In some cases, however, his sharp local focus leaves the reader awash in a sea of small towns, with no overall context. Although Fritz sets a context at the beginning of the book, discussing the mythical Alpine Redoubt in the minds of Allied military planners, that is the last time he looks at commanders. Even corps level and divisional level contexts are not typically provided--action is usually at the battalion level. This often provides confusion, especially as the situation was unusually fluid. The maps, alas, are almost useless in helping the reader sort this out.

Still, I could not help but be impressed by this study, which definitely is a worthy addition to our understanding of the late war campaigns in the west, as well as to our understanding of the last days of the Reich.

5 out of 5 stars Well Documented Historical Record.......2005-05-10

"Endkampf", by Stephen G. Fritz. S
ub-titled, "Soldiers, civilians And The Death Of the Third Reich", University press of Kentucky, 2004.
This is a well-documented record of the last months of the war in Europe, 1945, with an emphasis on the American drive through the south of Germany, into Austria. I say well-documented because, for example, Professor Fritz has devoted pages 276 through 332 on end notes on the subject matter. The author may have overdone it for some readers, because he has almost as many pages of notes as he does have text. This would, however, make my MA thesis advisor happy. Along the same scholarly theme, the book contains some 22 pages of primary sources (pp. 331-352) and some 23 pages of secondary sources (pp. 353-369).
Despite these scholarly overtones, Stephen G. Fritz has a written an excellent history of the final chapters of the war, the "end struggle".

Contemporary generals (e.g. Eisenhower and Bradley) were quite concerned with the so-called "Werwulf" -Werewolf- groups who were supposed to act as guerrilla units and continue hostilities even though the Wehrmacht had surrendered. Looking back over the past 60 years, we know that this guerilla army was an empty threat. The author, however, spends a lot of time on the this threat, that never materialized. He gives both the high command's ideas of what was happening in the south of Germany, but also presents the "grunt's" view of the end struggle. For example, he clearly shows that the American Army would not tolerate any last ditch defense. If the Hitler Youth or the SS chose to defend a town or village to the last civilian, the Americans would sit back, call in artillery and the USAAF and literally destroy the location. Mr. Fritz documents incidents where the German civilian population wanted to surrender, but the die-hard units (e.g. SS units) wanted to fight to the bitter end. This resulted in some cases of civilians being hanged for treason and in other cases, the SS units evacuating the town. Interestingly, the author has tracked down the men who did hanging and reported on the final judgement on these individuals, many years after the end of the war.

I found this book to be well written and to contain a wealth of references and sources on the final victory in the southern part of the Germany and some parts of Austria, as the Allies worked to prevent any post-war continuation of hostilities.

4 out of 5 stars The war was not over yet........2005-04-25

A valuable corrective to sugar-coated triumphalist delusions. Shows that, even though Nazi Germany faced hopeless odds in early 1945, they continued to fight vigorously on both fronts until Hitler was cut off and killed in late April.
Mr. Fritz focused on a relatively small area of southern Germany (Franconia, home district of Julius Streicher), to examine war-fighting at the local level. While some senior Nazis like Albert Speer were beginning to obstruct some of Hitler's more irrational orders (eg to destroy Germany's infrastructure, so that a German people unworthy of his genius would be punished with starvation), local Nazi activists held on with undiminished ferocity. For example, townspeople attempting to surrender to the advancing Americans would be summarily tried and hanged in proceedings that looked a lot like lynchings.
(The following point is mine, not Mr. Fritz's: In this context, the notorious Allied bombing of Dresden 13-15 Feb, stained with the blood of 35,000 civilians, was not entirely irrational. The war was still on, and Dresden was making important contributions to it, eg as a rail hub.)

1 out of 5 stars Ummm, is this a textbook?.......2005-02-01

Is this a textbook?...because it reads like one, or better yet, a doctorial thesis. This book is boring, dry and dull. I was intrigued by the idea...Germany immediately after the fall of the Third Reich, but the first 200 pages of the book deal with the last days of the fighting, and the stories in these pages are very repetitive. Then the last 67 pages deal with the days following the defeat, these pages are a bit interesting, dealing with all the displaced persons. You may say "hey, that only adds up to 267 pages"....well yes it does, even though the info here says the book contains 382 pages, the last 115 pages are the afterword, notes bibliography and the index!...A third of the book! Now, I'm no scholarly reader, I am a avid reader of WW2 by the likes of Ambrose and Beevor, and this is nothing like those authors books. I really labored getting through this book, not enjoyable at all. If you can grasp a clinical story like this, you may like it, but if you, (like me) like your WW2 books with more warmth and feeling, then look elsewhere. I thought this review a bit more detailed then simply saying " I hated it"
