Book Description
Explore the spiritual side of business
The best-selling author of Healing the Wounds writes another prescription for our transition-induced ailments. Here he addresses the self-defeating ways people and organizations react to rapid, seemingly relentless change, and advocates a steady diet of learning as the surest way to break free. Associating various responses to change with four character types -- The Overwhelmed, The Entrenched, The BSers, and The Learners -- the author holds up The Learners as the attainable ideal...and shows how to help those in the other categories pursue the learning path. The ultimate goal: to facilitate transition to a more flexible, self-directed workplace.

Puhhhhh-leeeeze..........2000-11-14
Okay, I was forced to buy this book for class. Boy, is it bad. And I mean HORRIBLE. Let me save you 250+ pages of mindless torture:You work with four types of people (the R factor). The overwhelmed, in need of therapy and a trip to Monster.com. They avoid, confuse, abuse others due to their innate unhappiness. The Entrenched-miserable to be around, won't lift a finger to change, help, or pick their nose for that matter. The BSer-no need for explanation there. And the golden child, the learner. Okay, now lets pretend you are a "Learner" in a BS organization-what should you do? So there you have it-you do the exponential square roots and see how many combos of that balderdash you can come up with. How did this get published? I'll keep this anonymous, because my professor, who skims Amazon for "who moved my cheese" type reviews to plagarize for his book, may come accross this, and I don't have my grade yet.

Book Description
Starting from the mechanisms of signal perception and transduction through to environmental effects, this book looks at a whole range of growth regulators, including those natural to the plants themselves, such as auxin and ethylene; and natural products from other sources, such as the fungal product fusicoccin. Regulation at all levels is considered, from initial perception of the growth signal, through transduction responses and DNA replication, to the "ultimate" level of cell expansion. The message which emerges is that no one approach is going to solve the remaining or future problems in this field; only by the efforts and collaboration of physiologists, biochemists, molecular biologists and others will progress be made.

would not recommend.......2007-03-26
We use this book in the class and most of us don't like it. The book just doesn't do a good job explaining many things. Unless you are an expert in the field or at least have prior experience I would not recommend you this book.
Good overview of molecular evolution studies but a bit outdated.......2006-03-16
If you're not familiar with DNA sequences analysis and inferring phylogenies, this book is a must read (as far as I know the only introduction book to the field). But it's a bit outdated (Bayesian analysis not covered).
Nice figures.......2004-01-08
I'm new to molecular evolution and have been confused with various terms and concepts (e.g., cladogram vs. phylogram vs. dendrogram, plesiomorphy vs. apomorphy vs. autapomorphy vs. synapomorphy vs. homoplasy, etc.). Reading other books that try to explain these concepts mostly in words only added more confusion.
Every page in this book contains highly illustrative figures that accompanies well written text. Of course, not all sections are not immediately clear to understand, and I would need to read other books as well.
If you are new to molecular evolution, start with this book along with any other books that may suit your particular need.
Trees and more trees.......2000-11-27
Although molecular phylogenetic analysis can be extremely complex, this reference provides an introduction to the subject that is straightforward to read. The reference begins with consideration of trees, which are structures used to model actual evolutionary relationships between genes or entire lifeforms. It then provides an introduction to molecular and population genetics. Coding as well as noncoding DNA (tandem repeats, transposable elements, retroviruses, spacer DNA) is considered. The reference then considers how genetic change can be measured, followed by how we can deduce molecular phylogenies. The validity of the molecular clock is then considered, along with a discussion of the neutralist-selectionist debate. The reference finally considers how different phylogenies can be combined to determine actual phylogeny, reconciled trees, and rates of diversification.
Handy read.......2000-03-25
This book is very well written and a handy tool for anyone who is new to molecular evolution. Nice diagrams and concise chapters. The authors know how to break up the sometimes demanding ideas into appropriate bites. Perfect for grad students and senior undergrads.
Book Description
This national bestseller exploring the complex emotional lives of animals was hailed as "a masterpiece" by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas and as "marvelous" by Jane Goodall.
The popularity of
When Elephants Weep has swept the nation, as author Jeffrey Masson appeared on Dateline NBC, Good Morning America, and was profiled in People for his ground-breaking and fascinating study. Not since Darwin's
The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals has a book so thoroughly and effectively explored the full range of emotions that exist throughout the animal kingdom.
From dancing squirrels to bashful gorillas to spiteful killer whales, Masson and coauthor Susan McCarthy bring forth fascinating anecdotes and illuminating insights that offer powerful proof of the existence of animal emotion. Chapters on love, joy, anger, fear, shame, compassion, and loneliness are framed by a provocative re-evaluation of how we treat animals, from hunting and eating them to scientific experimentation. Forming a complete and compelling picture of the inner lives of animals,
When Elephants Weep assures that we will never look at animals in the same way again.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful and fresh.......2007-09-27
Most people cling to the belief that we are the only species on the planet with the capacity for thought or emotion. In our daily experiences with animals we know that this is absurd but keep it ourselves for fear of ridicule. This book challenges those musty, Old World thoughts and fears. Even if you have already developed an enlightened compassion and ethic regarding other species, "When Elephants Weep" offers a refreshing, stimulating look at the life.
Not so great in the first place, it is now wildly outdated........2007-02-03
As someone who is studies emotions and decision making, I was looking forward to reading this book. While the author offers (and repeats, and repeats) considerable anecdotal evidence for animal emotion, there is little concrete science to support the claims.
Furthermore, the field of emotion-cognition study in humans is still coming into its own and has grown exponentially since 1996. Indeed, we now understand many human emotions better than in 1996. Naturally, when comparing humans and animal emotions, these advances dramatically change our understanding and therefore draw into question many of the inferences made in the book.
Not a great book to begin with. However, a decade after its release, it is borderline useless.
Had potential, but fell short.......2007-01-03
Having been intrigued by the title alone, I was greatly looking forward to reading this book. The book, however, did not measure up to my expectations. Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson has written several books, so I would expect much better writing coming from a veteran author, but the book was poorly written and poorly put together.
The book's title and subtitle appears as though it will be simply explaining the emotional lives of animals. Seems like a fairly simple concept. The author takes a different-than-expected approach by spending much of the book putting humans down and elevating animals to an almost god-like stature in comparison. Case in point, one chapter is called "Unfeeling Brutes" in reference to humans. The book seems to be aimed at convincing the skeptic rather than simply explaining the emotions of animals. One who already recognizes the feelings in animals would read this and say "I already knew that!" several times.
The author is incredibly redundant, saying the same things over and over again, proposing the same ideas, and using several of the same examples multiple times, perhaps with different wording, to prove his point.
There are plenty of stories to provide examples of animals' emotions, some endearing, some disheartening. That said, the storiesgo into very little detail, which seems unusual for a book of this sort. For one trying to prove the importance of emotions in animals, you'd think the author would find it in his best interest to provide as many details as possible. Instead, examples are shortened anywhere from a sentence to a mere paragraph. They also hop around a lot with no real sense of connection except for the emotion they shared.
Each chapter focuses on particular emotions, and they are broken down into sections within those chapters. It gives the *appearance* of organization in the book, but doesn't follow suit. For example, one chapter focuses on shame, blushing, and hidden secrets. Each part is broken into a different section within the chapter, starting with blushing. While reading about shame (which came next), the author took a sharp turn by ending the section by discussing blushing again, having not made any prior mention of it in this "shame" section. It was very jarring, and didn't flow at all. Such is the consistency of the entire book. Some sections are entirely useless in the sense that hardly any information or evidence is given, except to ultimately say "we don't know" and telling a story or two that proves absolutely nothing. The section on religious impulse is a perfect example of this.
The end notes are also confusing. Rather than puting citations within the book, you simply have to assume that any story the author is telling will have addition bibliographic information in the end notes. You find them by referencing the page number in the end notes, and lotcating the first line of the story next to the page number. This, however, seems to be more the fault of the publisher than the author, though the author can't seem to make up his mind if he will reference a work within the chapters or leave it for the end notes as he does both.
I don't necessarily agree with everything he says, particularly his intent on proving the "equality" of man and beast (though he fights for this equality throughout the book, he tries to almost cover it up by saying that we're simply "distinct" from one another). It IS wonderful to see a piece of work out there where the title alone may get people to open their eyes and see that animals can and do feel. The book might have been more widely received, however, had the author taken some time to clean it up a bit and spend more time focusing on the animals and less time on the humans he argues about so much. The author is clearly passionate about this subject, judging by the other titles he has and by this book. I am hoping that he will work on his skills as an author so that his next book on the subject will be much more refined. He has a lot to offer.
Looking for animal anecdotes?.......2006-10-31
First off, I am an animal lover. I've had pets most of my life so this book is very much like preaching to the choir. It would be hard for me to believe that my pets, and animals in general, do not have emotions. I thought this book would be black & white concerning that issue but it is very fair to the opinion that animals do not have emotions. The title suggestions that the opinion of this author is animals are emotional however she offers several stories and possibilities to keep the book balanced. I learned quite a lot from this book. It leans towards "animals are emotional" but it's not as black & white as I thought which made the book very interesting
I got this book because I wanted to read lots of stories of animals and their emotions but I didn't exactly get that. The first couple of chapters are void of emotional animal stories and once the book finally does start with the stories, they are lacking details. I felt as though the author wanted to get as much in as possible. Quantity over quality.
I'm still giving this book a good rating because I did have a great time reading it.
Activism Masquarading as Science..........2006-10-20
Knowing the author by name and by reputation, I borrowed this book from a friend rather than contributing to him financially by paying for it. It's just the kind of pseudo-scientific garbage I'd expect when someone schooled in Philosophy is allowed to write a book on a scientific topic. The serious question of whether - and to what degree - nonhuman animals experience emotion should be entered into not only with skepticism, but with knowledge of how Science should be carried out, and how to go about evaluating the data that results. Masson is qualified to do NONE of these, and seems utterly unaware of that handicap.
It's precisely what I'd expect from someone who romanticizes the barbaric acts of the Animal Liberation Front, however, a terrorist group that firebombs research facilities and university labs, then enters high schools and teaches those same tactics to our children. To my mine, Masson should share a prison cell for supporting them in his idiotic writings.

Book Description
Similar in concept to Tuttle's successful Kanji-a-Day and Kana-a-Day practice pads, this learning tool provides an enjoyable and motivating way for the learner to practice writing Chinese characters. The practice pad comes in the form of a memo block containing basic instructions, plus 365 numbered sheets: one per day for a year of learning, or more than one per day for faster progress! In writing Chinese characters, it is essential to follow the correct stroke-order and create uniform, well-proportioned, squarish shapes, rather than rectangular or rounded ones. Constant practice in the early stages of learning is vital in order for these habits to become second nature as you learn more and more characters.Essential help in learning to write the character is provided in diagrams showing its components and configuration, and above all, the stroke-order. Around the edge of each page, a set of 28 squares allow the user to first trace the character on top of the model, and then practice writing it independently.
Customer Reviews:
Love this product!.......2007-08-25
I just received this product and I think it's fabulous! I wish I had bought Volume 1, too, but it seems to be out of stock. I know some characters already, but this is a great way to brush up on my Chinese. I highly recommend it!
Great study help!.......2007-07-05
Nowadays many are trying to learn some Chinese. They would all love this! I just wish it were in a more permanent form [as I am using it, not tearing off those precious pages] for ready reference. Thank you.
O.K........2007-05-09
I ordered this practice pad along with the Chinese in a Flash Vol. 1 & 2. I thought this practice pad would offer more ideas, but it takes the characters in the exact order of Chinese in a Flash Vol. 1 only not all of them, just some. Had I known this I would not have bought the practice pad. If I was you I would get either this practice pad OR Chinese in a Flash Vol. 1 (personally I would get the Chinese in a Flash card, much more options, reusable & easy to carry size.)
Better than you think.......2005-01-15
This is not a calendar going by month and day, but lists the day of the year as a number (1-365). Notice on the package it IS listed as a "Practice Pad" and not as a calendar at all. I'd like to give it 4.5 stars, if I could; I only wish it came with a stand. I found the characters helpful. The stroke order is given, along with three chances to trace the character and 25 more chances to write it yourself without the tracing. It gives the simplified form of the character, but also the traditional form, if available. The box contains a "handout" with pronounciation helps. I have this calendar at work, and I work on the "charcater of the day" before checking my email! 8-)
Nice introduction to Chinese Charcters but NOT a Calendar.......2005-01-14
First of all this item is not a Calendar. While the pages are listed as "Day 1, Day 2, ..." and etc. there are no dates. However, it does have a good selection of words appropriate for the beginning Chinese student. However there is no indication of stroke orders, which is limits this product's use. In the end you're probably better off buying a real character book and doing the "one a day" on your own.
Book Description
A revolutionary new low-carb diet for diabetics by the doctor who pioneered a successful new approach to the disease--with 100 original mouth watering recipes. For diabetics, diet is more than a lifestyle choice--it*s the key to controlling the course of their disease. Many diabetics struggle their entire lives to maintain a healthy weight, but the guidelines given to them by the American Diabetes Association have proven unhelpful in regulating blood sugar--the critical component in keeping diabetes in check. In THE DIABETES DIET, Dr. Bernstein serves up the groundbreaking low-carbohydrate approach to diabetes care that has enabled his patients to take control of their disease by regulating their blood sugar without the usual swings.Dr. Bernstein himself is living proof of the success of this method, and he has the science to back it up. Plunging into the current debate on low-fat vs. low-carb diets, he shows that, especially for diabetics, low-carb is what will change lives--and he offers 100 delicious all-new recipes to help keep diabetics on track for life. The recipes and advice in THE DIABETES DIET will provide readers with an easy-to-follow guide for controlling their disease and regaining their health and well-being. * There are an estimated 18 million diabetics in America, and their number is increasing every year--yet there are no low-carb diet books appropriate for diabetics. * Since publication in 1997, Dr. Bernstein*s Diabetes Solution and its revised 2003 edition have sold more than 120,000 copies. * An engineer by training, Bernstein pioneered blood glucose self-monitoring and the tight control of blood sugar that is now accepted as the standard treatment of diabetes. He entered medical school at the age of 45 in order to publish his findings.
Customer Reviews:
The Diabetes Diet: Dr. Bernstein's Low-Carbohydrate Solution.......2007-09-22
My sister in law is a diabetic and she follows "the Diabetic Diet" given to her by her physician. She could not get her sugar down and kept on buying the recommended products with Splenda. After she read this book and implemented it in her life, her blood sugar is normal and she has lost weight. There are a lot of stealth sugars in "the Diabetic Diet" most often recommended by physicians that shoot up your sugar instead of controlling it. Absolutely great book, it has saved her life and my husbands as well. Even if you are not a diabetic you should follow this program to lose weight. Wonderful.
Great Dr. Bernstein book.......2007-09-13
Even though Dr. Bernstein is a type 1 diabetic, his writing also will help type 2 diabetics keep blood sugar low and from developing complications.
Diabetes Diet - The only way to deal with this Disease.......2007-01-15
Dr. Bernstein educates us in the real reasons diabetics struggle to maintain low blood sugar levels - carbohydrates. His book(s) outline in simple language how to control what you eat and more importantly how to manage your sugars by limiting carbs. His insight into the disease as a Type 1 diabetic himself, has made it easier for me to set myself up for a healthier lifestyle by eliminating unnecessary carbs, understanding how the body of a diabetic handles carbs and then planning meals based on these principles.
I have lost weight easily, maintained low steady blood sugars, and finally understand how this disease that has devastated members of my family, can be managed by what I put in my mouth. Thank you Dr. Bernstein for your years of diligent research. You will make a difference in the world of diabetes. This should be required reading for all doctors of diabetics.
diet for the rich.......2007-01-12
Dr.Bernstein does a good job of explaining his theory, but most working people would find it very difficult to follow his strict guidelines. The recipes contained items I have never even heard of - at least they aren't found in the kitchen of any of my mid-Ohio friends. The book did make me more aware of why I should eat a low-carb diet - but absolutely no bread, no sugar, no pasta, no rice - ever???? Tell the cafeteria at work!
A Must Read Book for ANY Diabetic.......2007-01-12
This book in addition to Dr. Bernstein's book on "The Diabetes Solution" are must reads for any diabetic, parent of diabetic, or concerned family member. The two books prompted me to launch the diabetes solution website.
Let me put it succinctly--THIS BOOK IS A SOLUTION TO DIABETES.
What does that mean? It means that after 28 years of following the ultra-high carb diet of the ADA (which now that I have my blinders off makes zero sense) I have NORMAL blood sugars. My A1C went from 8.0 while on the ADA (which they see as only slightly high) to 5.0 (almost normal). I still have a bit of fine tuniing to go.
