Book Description
In this new, revised, and updated edition, Lemert continues the narrative that made Social Things a best seller among sociologists and a favorite among students. In an entirely new chapter, he opens the sociological imagination to new global realities--a topic much debated by sociologists today. What they and politicians call globalization is lived by people all over the world who seek and often fail to find a better life. The new chapter, called Global Methods, shows just how both practical and professional sociologies--apart from sharing so much in common--share also the necessity of rethinking the methods by which people figure out what globalization means in their lives.

Customer Reviews:
Do Not Trust This Book.......2005-07-14
I edited the latest edition of Exploring Agriscience, and if you are a teacher do not buy it. It is so rife with errors as to be useless. This author would have you believe that all hormones, steroids, and chemicals used by the dairy and meat industry are safe. He would have you not to worry about any of the pesticides and that people are just worry over nothing. He also concludes that the organic industry is a waste of money, time, and effort, and that no proof exists that organic food is better than mass produced food.
If an adult read this book, I would assume he/she would be able to read between the lines. However, an 8th grader (this book's audience) will not know that he/she is being fed industry propaganda.
Please think twice about buying this book for your students unless you are prepared to undo much of the damage it incurs.

Book Description
According to conventional wisdom, our genes and lifestyles are the most important causes of the most deadly ailments of our time. Conventional wisdom may be wrong. In this controversial book, the eminent biologist Paul W. Ewald offers some startling arguments:
-Germs appear to be at the root of heart disease, Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, many forms of cancer, and other chronic diseases.
-The greatest threats to our health come not from sensational killers such as Ebola, West Nile virus, and super-virulent strains of influenza, but from agents that are already here causing long-term infections, which eventually lead to debilitation and death.
-The medical establishment has largely ignored the evidence that implicates these germs, to the detriment of our public health.
-New evolutionary theories are available, which explain how germs function and offer opportunities for controlling these modern plagues — if we are willing to listen to them.
Plague Time is an eye-opening exploration of the revolutionary new understanding of disease that may set the course of medical research for the twenty-first century.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome Book - Must read for all med students and biologists.......2006-01-31
This book is a real mind opener. It intelligently braves to confront orthodoxy. Good for Paul! Medicine needs to constantly challenge the orthodox theories when they clearly don't work.
By faith and science, I am a creationist, but do not feel threatend by Ewald's genuine search for the truth. Microevolution is a testable fact and a great deal can be learned from this text and his theories on observation.
I also feel that this book should give us all more compassion on the victims of the disorders that plague humanity. Once their real causes are understood, then real substantitive actions can be taken to help them.
Good bedtime reading.......2005-10-29
This book surveys the past, present, and future of infectious disease management, in many cases re-defining or re-classifying diseases accepted as genetic or risk-factor associated. This book would be very helpful to those trying to sort out the information and dis-information presented to them on the nightly news so that they can make informed decisions on the next trip to the doctor for the runny nose, as well as gaining some insight into the effects of current medical research on diseases that are much more serious (and how they get that way).
Really interesting, rather easy reading........2004-10-16
I can see some readers think this book is not easy for the layman, but the truth is if this is your first approximation to evolutionary medicine or evolutionary epidemiology, I think this is a good book for you to start. There are other excellent books out there like "Why do we get sick?" by Randolph M. Nesse and George C. Williams (which I personally recommend too) that may be simpler and broader, but they lack some of the originality Paul Ewald has in this book. The only thing I criticize about this book is that it could have made its point in fewer pages, that aside it was truly great.
Ewald's perspective is original and really logic, I only keep thinking it might be a little exaggerated to think it is going to revolutionize medicine. He surely states really important new axioms, and in this way he is revolutionizing medicine, but I believe the benefits derived by his hypothesis are not going to be that outstanding. The book is great and original, not hard reading but challenge common knowledge (not common sense, be careful).
Interesting subject, boring book........2004-02-25
The book is interesting but weaves the theory of evolution into nearly every page. Too preachy on the subject of evolution, genes, etc. Highly sophisticated language, complex scientific jargon used a little too often. Not recommended for the average "unscientifically-trained" reader.
why settle for a century?.......2003-08-17
The dramatic message of this book is that chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and arthritis, are not necessarily caused by an inherent and inevitable breakdown of the human body, but by the action of infectious agents and by the immune response to those agents. Sooner or later, some bug finds its way through your defenses and settles in. Sometimes you know right away (small pox) BUT sometimes it takes years (AIDS, Lyme) sometimes it takes decades (shingles). This is not a new-agey wishful thinking assessment of risks, but a scientific analysis of disease and its causes, based on experimental data. The companion volume "The Evolution of Infectious Disease" covers much of the same ground but gives much detail to satisfy the sceptics.
I'm a scientist (but not a biologist) and I would bet this is one of the 20 century books that will still be a recommended book a century from now. Ewald's theory is still fighting for recognition, but there are so many factors that are "right" about it that it has to prevail (like evolution.) The big questions are about how effectively we can fight quietly acting micro-organisms whose effects don't show up for years or decades.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful story, easy read, will tug on your heart strings.......2007-07-23
I loved this book! I fell in love with Zamba the lion right from the start and would have loved to have met him in real life. He was an amazing lion who was truly one the the greatest lions who ever lived. I could not put the book down, I was facinated by it and the story of how Ralph Helfer trained his animals. This book touched me in so many ways as I am a animal lover as well, especially cats, both big and small and I found myself laughing and crying....
My dream would be to do what Ralph got to do, raise a lion cub and form a strong bond with it - have a wonderfully close relationship with it and have it be part of the family. What a blessing and treasure!
If you are a animal or cat lover, you will love this book!
Zamba-Review.......2007-05-07
Loved the story! Like to read true stories about animals lives. Author covered everything necessary without being too wordy.
Also loved his book, Medoc, about an elephant.
entertaining, absorbing, optimistic.......2006-09-14
It was engaging to read about the care and coaching of Zamba. The episode with the dentist was quite intriguing: I really thought Ralph would end up being eaten when he tried to do a root canal on Zamba with essentially zero anesthesia.
A simple tale of a man and a remarkable lion.......2006-07-06
Close to the start of the book Mr. Helfer recounts his first encounter with a lion which had been fear trained and nearly loses his arm and his life. However, he realized the lion was just frightened and defending itself. It set him on the first steps to founding a new system of relating to non-domesticated animals that really caught on in the 1960s. The very first beneficiary of this system is Zamba, an abandoned lion cub, who grows into a remarkably gentle, patient and sweet animal. Mr. Helfer details several major experiences with Zamba that includes their first meeting, Zamba's first major movie and trip to Africa, a harrowing episode due to a snow storm, an even more suspenseful escape during a flood, Zamba's departure from the world and a few other experiences they had together. I would have actually liked to hear about many more of these experiences as well as how he refined and developed affection training. Mr. Helfer also raised Gentle Ben and Modoc the Elephant both of whom make cameo appearances. Several times Mr. Helfer critiques his own species quite harshly. There were certainly a few individuals detailed in the book who deserved that condemnation but there were many others who demonstrated bravery, humanity and dedication to animals as well as to people. There were a few relatively minor downsides to the book. Mr. Helfer's writing style is a bit rough around the edges. He makes a few philosophical riffs here and there that aren't anything revolutionary. The author is a bit of a mystic and describes several events which I assumed had some type of magical significance but was not convincing to me. There was actual magic and that was the strong bond between Zamba and Helfer. If you have a fascination with cats especially large ones you'll want to read this book.
Fantastic insight to the bond between human and animal.......2006-03-08
This is a lovely book. Ralph shows us what is possible between humans and animals using kindness and love, not cruelty and mishandling. I really fell in love with Zamba and was moved by Ralph's stories and awe inspired by his amazing techniques and love for all creatures. This is a must read for all animal lovers, especially those with a passion for lions.

Customer Reviews:
AMAZING!!!!.......2007-03-17
I stumbled upon this book as something to read on vacation when I had read everything there was already by my favorite authors. What I found was a book I could not put down. It was beautiful, intriquing, true to the challenges in the lives of so many, and wrought with history! I hope that everyone meets someone in their life that cativates their hearts like Nessie. This book was of the best I have ever read and I hope there will be others like it from Marianne in the future.
If you have any interest whatsoever in the Civil War or just like stories about life, friendships, and love....this novel is a MUST READ!
This story doesn't disappoint..........2007-02-26
A fine read and repeated read. Highly recommended...it's good enough to be enjoyed by straight readers as well :)
Under The Whitness Tree.......2007-01-05
This is Marianne K. Martin most enjoyable book so far. It is mysterious and conflictual. The character are unique and this is a tale told well.
You won't be able to put the book down!.......2006-02-07
Dhari Weston inherits an old house by a distant relative, an aunt she didn't even know. So why in the world would she leave the house to Dhari? Dhari is convinced no one would want to live there when she sees what condition the old house is in. But someone does.
There she meets an old woman by the name of Nessie Tinker. Nessie has lived near the old house all her life and knows its secrets. One of which could be that the house seems to be waiting for someone. Does Nessie know who it is? Does she know what event a majestic old tree, known as a "Witness Tree", growing near the house might have bore silent witness to? If she does, will she tell?
University professor, Dr. Erin Hughes has a love of the Civil War era frequently lecturing on the era and the role of women during the war. And she loves old houses. Dhari is pointed in Erin's direction when she seeks information on the old house and the possibility that the house could be pre-Civil War. Upon seeing the old house, Erin is immediately captivated by both the house and the witness tree. Dhari, whose life back home has its own set of problems, is only interested in selling the house. But something - or is it someone - keeps drawing her back to the old house. Could it be the house calling to her?
The house it seems may also be calling to Erin. Together both women begin to explore the mystery contained within. As they spend more and more time together, a friendship is formed. A friendship that could lead to more if only both women would let feelings they are holding close to their own hearts surface. Will they or will the secrets of the old house be too much to overcome?
Under the Witness Tree is a fantastic book. The author blends a truly terrific mix of romance, with just the right amount of intrigue and suspense in a tale that keeps you guessing until the very end. Sit down and rest beneath the witness tree and let the secrets unfold to your heart's desire.
Warm hearted story filled with wonderfully drawn characters.......2005-08-10
I had very high expectations for this novel as it was a Lambda Literary finalist and deservedly so. Much more than a romance it's the story of many different people with a variety of issues that by the end of the novel you end up knowing as you do your own friends. Believe the other reviews, this should be on your must read list. I've read it twice now and enjoyed it even more the second time. Perfect for a lazy afternoon or evening.
