Book Description
Innovation processes and related spillovers are of eminent importance in a modern economy. How do they relate to spatial structures and environmental factors? The papers analyse innovation processes and spillovers in the economy from various angles, focussing mainly on regional and environmental aspects. Among others they touch issues on university spillovers, urban tourism, highway investments, industry clusters, and econometrics. An introductory chapter sets the stage for the following discussion, and a concluding chapter evaluates the achievements. Contributors from Austria, other European countries and from the U.S.A. discuss this question from various angles: among others universities, urban tourism, highway investments, and industry clusters. The volume demonstrates the relevance of the concept of spillovers, particularly in the context of innovations, and stimulates future work in this area.

Now I know something about Biology.......2007-05-19
I used this text for my Biology class in college and I really liked it.
They make everything simple (sometimes too simple, I would expect more details in some chapters)
As a foreign student, this book was great for building my vocabulary.
I do recommend it, it's worth it

The Book For People Who Do Too Much
ASIN: 0740755862 |
Book Description
Designer and illustrator Jane Seabrook had a runaway winner with her first book, Furry Logic. Now here's her long-awaited follow-up title, Laugh at Life, offering another menagerie of cleverly rendered animals and the simple, yet-oh-so-deep ruminations that match these natural comedians.
Seabrook possesses a wonderful gift for illustrating nature in incredible detail. Her artwork reflects a zoologist's understanding of animals matched with an illustrator's eye for color and human nature, and she deftly matches these appealing images with exactly the right quotations-and clever, funny ones at that-to convey the meaning she's after. Topics range from the challenges of relationships to the enjoyment of life's many and diverse pleasures.
The result is a delightfully satisfying keepsake book that can be enjoyed on many levels and again and again. Just as Furry Logic did, Laugh at Life will captivate those who buy this book for themselves or as an adorable and cherished gift. It has a broad appeal, appropriate for multiple audiences and occasions.
Customer Reviews:
More smiles.......2007-02-15
I really loved the first Furry Logic book so much but when I saw Laugh at Life I enjoyed that one too, so I got several of those. The people I have given these books to have called me or written to say that reading the little books made them laugh their troubles away. The artwork is awesome.
Still smiling..........2006-08-27
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I bought it and Furry Logic to give to a friend who needed cheering up. They did the trick and then some. She couldn't stop smiling as she read through. (I ended up buying some for me as well.) I certainly can recommend them to anyone. The illustrations are phenominal and I personally didn't find that Laugh at Life repeated anything from the first book. I think it was designed to reinforce the first however. If you take these two books as they are meant to be taken, you can't go wrong in buying either of them (or both).
Happy moments with Furry Logic books.......2006-03-25
As I mentioned in my review of Furry Logic, these books brought a smile to my face many times. I gave this a 4 only because there were a few items repeated from the first book. Both books are a joy to read, however. They make you start the day with a smile on your face.

This is okay for a fisherman wanting to learn more about bass fishing specifically. Great for a walleye guy wanting to learn about bass.
An informative easy read!.......2005-01-24
In my opinion, this is a very under-rated book. Weiss does a nice job of integrating biology, tactics, weather and technology in a concise informative format that is easy to read and digest. The three main black bass species are covered; Largemouth, Smallmouth and Spotted.

Guide to Old English
ASIN: 0804722218 |
Book Description
At first glance, there may seem little reason to think of English and German as variant forms of a single language. There are enormous differences between the two in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar, and a monolingual speaker of one cannot understand the other at all. Yet modern English and German have many points in common, and if we go back to the earliest texts available in the two languages, the similarities are even more notable.
How do we account for these similarities? The generally accepted explanation is that English and German are divergent continuations of a common ancestor, a Germanic language now lost. This book surveys the linguistic and cultural backgrounds of the earliest kown Germanic languages, members of what has traditionally been known as the English family tree: Gothic, Old Norse, Old Saxon, Old English, Old Frisian, Old Low Franconian, and Old High German.
For each language, the author provides a brief history of the people who spoke it, an overview of the important texts in the language, sample passages with full glossary and word-by-word translations, a section on orthography and grammar, and discussion of linguistic or philological topics relevant to all the early Germanic languaes but best exemplified by the particular language under consideration. These topics inclued the pronunciation of older languages; the runic inscriptions; Germanic alliterative pietry; historical syntax, borrowing, analogy, and drift; textual transmission; and dialect variation.
Customer Reviews:
Great introduction to historical linguistics of the Germanic family.......2007-07-02
I had the privilege to study the history of the Germanic languages from a photocopied version of the manuscript for this book back in the day. Though the title makes it seem targeted at students of Old English, it actually gives equal weight to all of the Germanic languages, notably Old High German, Gothic, and Old Norse (Icelandic).
Each chapter begins with the parable, "The Sower and the Seed," in the language of the chapter. This text was chosen because it's actually found in the existing manuscripts - - the Bible tended to be translated into the vernacular early on, and disseminated widely - - and because this story has a goodly amount of grammatical action. "A sower went out to sow seeds" gives you three variations on the basic stem of
, and you can see how that idea is reflected in each language.
Using the same text also makes for great pedagogy. After a few chapters, the student *sees* the differences immediately, and automatically starts thinking about the language at hand.
It would be easy to make a book like this a collection of reference grammars with a boring list of similarities and differences from one language to the next. Robinson avoids this, and writes in a lively and interesting style. I highly recommend this book if you're interested in the history of the Germanic languages.
Perhaps Best General Survey of Germanic Languages Ever Written.......2007-06-01
This is a wonderful book, and I doubt if any serious reviewer will give it less than five stars. It is exceptionally well-written by an author who wears his immense learning lightly. Devoting a chapter to each of the known early Germanic languages -- e.g., Old Germanic, Gothic, Old Saxon, Old English, Old Frisian, etc. -- Robinson shows how the languages developed, how they shared common characteristics and developed new ones, and how they to some extent must have cross-fertilized one another. In the process, he shares some fascinating information, such as the development of "Futhark," the runic alphabet in which Old Norse was originally written, and makes a cautionary remark which explains that we may know a good deal less about early Germanic writings skills than we think we do: "It is easier to write a letter on a stick than on a stone." He also tackles some deep linguistic issues, such as the reasons why the idea of a language-tree may be misleading, and why the analogy of biological taxonomy to language typology can be problematical. When biological species diverge, they never re-converge. But tribes, armies, villagers, etc., my split up, rejoing, form new groups, etc., so their languages may diverge, reconverge, borrow, meld, and otherwise demonstrate a more complicated history than a "divergence from a common ancestor" model might suggest. For example, Robinson concludes there never was a "common language" which could be called "West Germanic."
Robinson also points out the limits of our knowledge -- so much of our reconstruction of these ancient languages depends upon translations of the Bible and other religious texts that we know very little about the idiomatic usage which surely characterized the "everyday" use of these tongues. We have to be grateful to Robinson for a book which is unlikely to be equaled, much less surpassed, anytime soon.
Excellent Introduction and Quick Reference.......2006-12-06
Orrin Robinson has done what many suggested could never be done -- or done well at any rate: he has constructed a useful, solid introduction to the whole of early Germanic linguistics, hitting all the high points, with concision, without merely paying lip service to each language. It's a terrific starting point for comparative Germanic linguistics -- from which you can move on to more exhaustive works on the individual languages.
Robinson covers seven key Germanic languages here, each in its own chapter: Gothic, Old Norse, Old Saxon, Old English, Old Frisian, Old Low Franconian, and Old High German. In each chapter, he situates the language in its proper historical context, discusses its development from Primitive Germanic, explains its phonology (useful crib notes to refer back to when you need to remember how to pronounce Old Saxon or Gothic! :), talks about the key literary texts in the language, offers two or three reading samples in each language -- with glosses and cognates in the margin and a short glossary following, provides an overview of the grammar, and more. Each chapter also concludes with a Further Reading section, telling those interested in learning more where to turn next.
This is quite a lot to have accomplished in such a relatively short book (c.300 pp.). Robinson's writing is a model of clarity, and the book never plods or becomes too overwhelming or too dry. I've read this book more than once and I refer to it often, which is a compliment of another sort. Very highly recommended indeed!
Exceptional Read!!.......2005-10-12
This book is an exceptional piece of literary work. This book compares old English to it closest continental relatives. I particularly enjoyed the preamble at the beginning of each chapter that discusses the history surrounding the people that spoke such languages as old Saxon, old Norse, old Friesian and other Germanic dialects. This would be a valuable tool to the student or to the armchair Etymologist/early medieval historian.
Great Overview of Germanic Tongues.......2003-08-26
An overview of the surviving tongues of the Germanic peoples. There are chapters on Frankish, Old English, West Goth, Norse, Old German, etc.
Easy to read. Layman friendly. Short and to the point.

Book Description
“This book is the story of my life as it relates to the subject of food. It is my autobiography in food and meals and restaurants and countries far and near. Let me take you to a restaurant on the Left Bank of Paris that I found when writing The Lords of Discipline. There are meals I ate in Rome while writing The Prince of Tides that ache in my memory when I resurrect them. There is a shrimp dish I ate in an elegant English restaurant, where Cuban cigars were passed out to all the gentlemen in the room after dinner, that I can taste on my palate as I write this. There is barbecue and its variations in the South, and the subject is a holy one to me. I write of truffles in the Dordogne Valley in France, cilantro in Bangkok, catfish in Alabama, scuppernong in South Carolina, Chinese food from my years in San Francisco, and white asparagus from the first meal my agent took me to in New York City. Let me tell you about the fabulous things I have eaten in my life, the story of the food I have encountered along the way. . . ”
America’s favorite storyteller, Pat Conroy, is back with a unique cookbook that only he could conceive. Delighting us with tales of his passion for cooking and good food and the people, places, and great meals he has experienced, Conroy mixes them together with mouthwatering recipes from the Deep South and the world beyond.
It all started thirty years ago with a chance purchase of The Escoffier Cookbook, an unlikely and daunting introduction for the beginner. But Conroy was more than up to the task. He set out with unwavering determination to learn the basics of French cooking—stocks and dough—and moved swiftly on to veal demi-glace and pâte brisée. With the help of his culinary accomplice, Suzanne Williamson Pollak, Conroy mastered the dishes of his beloved South as well as the cuisine he has savored in places as far away from home as Paris, Rome, and San Francisco.
Each chapter opens with a story told with the inimitable brio of the author. We see Conroy in New Orleans celebrating his triumphant novel The Prince of Tides at a new restaurant where there is a contretemps with its hardworking young owner/chef—years later he discovered the earnest young chef was none other than Emeril Lagasse; we accompany Pat and his wife on their honeymoon in Italy and wander with him, wonderstruck, through the markets of Umbria and Rome; we learn how a dinner with his fighter-pilot father was preceded by the Great Santini himself acting out a perilous night flight that would become the last chapters of one of his son’s most beloved novels. These tales and more are followed by corresponding recipes—from Breakfast Shrimp and Grits and Sweet Potato Rolls to Pappardelle with Prosciutto and Chestnuts and Beefsteak Florentine to Peppered Peaches and Creme Brulee. A master storyteller and passionate cook, Conroy believes that “A recipe is a story that ends with a good meal.”
Customer Reviews:
Ahhh...Pat Conroy...!.......2007-10-10
This author can do no wrong. I have everything he has produced and while this is called a "cookbook" it is so very much more...It resides proudly
in the midst of my complete and comprehensive collection!...Bravo, Mr. Conroy!
Conroy's Latest Delight.......2006-07-16
All of Pat Conroy's books reside proudly on my bookshelf. I started collecting with "The Water is Wide" and "The Boo". I have followed his career with joy for his well deserved success in literature. In "The Pat Conroy Cookbook: Recipes of My Life" he treats us to a witty and emotional memoir interspersed with his culinary expertise garnered in France, Italy, The South, including Atlanta, New Orleans, Mobile and the low country of South Carolina. It's another "can't put it down" Conroy book, only there are many wonderful recipes to please the discerning palate -don't miss this one!
Bring on the Hush Puppies, baby!.......2006-06-06
This has now moved into my all time favorite Pat Conroy book, and I'm a big Conroy fan. It's not so much a book of recipes, though that is definitely a part of it, as short vignettes of life in Mr Conroy's world. And since our world overlaps, and we know some of the same individuals, it was even more delightful. Mr czuk took one look at the picture on the front and said "You'd read a book about food by a man who looks like that?" Well, yes. And better him than some anorexic yuppy chic in a glam kitchen. Bring on the hush puppies, baby!
Recipes 5 Stars, Rhetoric and Dialogue 1 Star.......2006-03-29
This is a mouth-watering cookbook with lots of fantastic recipes, and I can't thank Mr. Conroy enough for sharing them with us. I'm sure that, when all is said and done, a lot of these recipes will become permanent staples of my repertoire.
With that said, I have to add that this book is terribly flawed by two things--its inflated rhetoric and its clunky dialogue. Granted, all of the events in this book supposedly happened and all of the people spoke the words Conroy claims they spoke. But these "real people" just don't SOUND real. I'm not accusing Mr. Conroy of fabricating dialogue--I'm just saying that his dialogue just doesn't ring true. It sounds inflated, artificial. And while some of his descriptions of food are, well, "delicious," those descriptions come wrapped in yards of inflated rhetoric that, like the dialogue, grates on the reader's ear.
I should add that these same flaws have prevented me from ever being able to read Mr. Conroy's fiction. But those flaws can't "kill" a superb cookbook. I just wish that Mr. Conroy hadn't "overcooked" it, so to speak. :-)
Filled with life, love, food and wonder.......2005-12-03
This little gem is wonderful in a literal sense - it inspires wonder. First, how terrific to see a great photo of Pat standing tall on the cover with a bucket of low country oysters. It's hard not to look at him and see all the leading characters from his books - the young teacher from Water is Wide, the scared and brave cadet from Lords of Discipline, the brave lost survivor from Prince of Tides, etc.
This book is for anyone who loves Pat's books. It's truly a story of his life, but amazingly, threaded together by the food and meals he's experienced, and friends who've shared those meals with him. Many of the real-life characters from Pat's fiction weave in and out of these meals - his beloved fish-hating mother, his feared but irreplaceable fighter-pilot father, his 'paisan' roommates from The Citadel, his Roman neighbors from Beach Music, etc.
The most pleasant surprise for me from this book, is Pat's stories breathe rich life into his recipes, making them more full and sensual than recipes on the flat page of most other cookbooks. For example, his recipe for pickled shrimp is fairly straightforward in ingredient and preparation, but for Pat, this is a signature dish he brings to memorials when a friend dies. His story lets us see and feel the food hungrily devoured by the friends and loved ones of the deceased, as Pat feels the pride of feeding them in their time of grief. I began the book thinking the recipes would be throwaways, and ended with a dozen or so recipes I plan to try.
Bravo Pat! Someday I hope to read The Boo - your one story I have yet to track down. As long as you write and I read, I will be reading the terrific stories you tell.
