Book Description
Peter Kall and János Mayer are distinguished scholars and professors of Operations Research and their research interest is particularly devoted to the area of stochastic optimization.
Stochastic Linear Programming: Models, Theory, and Computation is a definitive presentation and discussion of the theoretical properties of the models, the conceptual algorithmic approaches, and the computational issues relating to the implementation of these methods to solve problems that are stochastic in nature. The application area of stochastic programming includes portfolio analysis, financial optimization, energy problems, random yields in manufacturing, risk analysis, etc. In this book, models in financial optimization and risk analysis are discussed as examples, including solution methods and their implementation.
Stochastic programming is a fast developing area of optimization and mathematical programming. Numerous papers and conference volumes, and several monographs have been published in the area; however, the Kall and Mayer book will be particularly useful in presenting solution methods including their solid theoretical basis and their computational issues, based in many cases on implementations by the authors. The book is also suitable for advanced courses in stochastic optimization.

Book Description
A computationally oriented comparison of solution algorithms for two stage and jointly chance constrained stochastic linear programming problems, this is the first book to present comparative computational results with several major stochastic programming solution approaches. The following methods are considered: regularized decomposition, stochastic decomposition and successive discrete approximation methods for two stage problems; cutting plane methods, and a reduced gradient method for jointly chance constrained problems. The first part of the book introduces the algorithms, including a unified approach to decomposition methods and their regularized counterparts. The second part addresses computer implementation of the methods, describes a testing environment based on a model management system, and presents comparative computational results with the various algorithms. Emphasis is on the computational behavior of the algorithms.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting for researchers; not so much for students........2000-04-14
This not a bad book, and I didn't regret buying it. However, if you are interested in an introduction to stochastic linear programming, look for other books (e.g. Kall/Wallace or Birge/Louveaux). Indeed, the title does not convey the true nature of the book. Its subtitle (A comparison based on a model management system) better clarifies its purpose: it is a short research monograph where different solution algorithms are compared. If you want, it is a sort of high-level thesis work, from which a book has been derived.
Computational tests are a quite significant part of the book, whereas the introduction to the field is quite brief (and limited in scope; for instance only two-stage problems with recourse are described).
The theoretical part aims at being rigorous and self-contained (since it starts from the basics of convex optimization), but it is too brief and hard to read for a student. It can be used as a reference for the experienced reader, provided she tracks all the required references in the literature. Furthermore, it may be interesting for people searching for some work on chance constrained problems, since the author is an active researcher in this area.
As to the computational testing, it is worth noting that the author describes how to generate problem instances to test different algorithms; this is good for people looking for benchmarks. On the other hand, many readers will not find the description of the codes developed by the author much useful.
On the whole, while it may be a useful reading for a researcher, this is more a long survey article than a true book. In view of this, a cheaper edition would have been better.

Book Description
More than half of all mergers and acquisitions fail to meet established objectives of value creation. This book is a practical guide to further ensure the successful outcome of business M&A activities. Gendron highlights the critical issues that have historically been the foundation of poorly executed business integration processes. How these key elements are handled can make or break the integration of an acquired company. They include understanding the purpose of the transaction, capturing the learning of preliminary due diligence review efforts, and managing the personal factors that affect all employees in the merger process, including those who work for the acquiring and acquired companies. Once these basic issues have been considered, the integration team should focus on culture, critical processes, and communications. This book provides executives involved with the integration process with the tools they need, including checklists and assessment tools to develop, plan, and execute a successful merger. Whether new to the M&A process or a seasoned pro, the executive charged with key M&A responsibilities will benefit from this book's straightforward examples and non-technical presentation of information.

Reasonably useful and very boring.......2004-10-13
No idea at all in this book... Just check lists. Long, very long check lists (I hardly exagerate). You may find it useful, and it certainly is, at least a little. Or you may find that succeeding in a merger is not only a matter of ticking all the items of a long list...

Book Description
Provides syntheses of studies in three continents on the problem of achieving and understanding tropical rural development without compromising longer-term sustainability of the soil and water systems that underpin it.
The studies were carried out in Central/South America, Africa and Asia during the 1990s, mostly through the support of the EU Science and Technology for Development Programme. The studies encompass examples of erosion measurement:; of erosion control and conservation techniques at soil and ecosystem levels; of the limits to uses of fragile tropical soils; of the effects of runoff combined with regulation on rivers and reservoirs; of the importance of indigenous people in the development processes and of the value and limitations of modelling at scales from soils to catchment. There is no single message from the book because there is no single solution to the problems of achieving sustainable tropical development.
This book presents ideas, techniques and case studies, knowledge of which will help researchers in many scientific and social disciplines to understand the complexities better, and politicians and bureaucrats to understand the consequences of development decisions and learn from the failure of many earlier ones.

Chockful of information.......2006-05-09
I decided to skim through Kaplan AP Biology a few days before the AP Biology exam. This book is BIG, a lot thicker than the Princeton Review's version. Although there is a TON of helpful information in this book, it did go too much in detail for the AP exam itself. I was worrying so much about specifics because this book goes into detail in a lot of topics (which it did a good job of), but when I took the AP exam, the multiple choice section was a breeze, and the free-response was very doable. Better to be overprepared than underprepared, though, so I am glad that I skimmed this book.
I believe this book is more useful for the AP Biology class over the course of a year. There were topics like evolution and genetics that I was shaky on because our biology book provided so much information that it was confusing to digest, but Kaplan summarized topics - less than the college text but more than, say, Princeton Review, which tends to provide students with JUST enough for the AP exam. The summaries of the 12 recommended labs, genetics, and ecology were so helpful that even though I did not need about 80% of what I had read for the actual AP exam, I am glad that I have this information downpat for future use!
My analysis therefore is: This is an informative book with an excellent summaries. However, do not read this big book cover to cover the night before the exam because it is long and oftentimes more specific than you need to be for the AP exam. You'll probably end up despairing over the fact that there's so much information and panic, which is not a good idea!
Not So Bad After All.......2006-05-09
I reviewed for the AP using this book. I only read the first three chapters or so, and read the lab portion (which, by the way, is extremely helpful).
I also used one of the two practice tests. The answer explanations were excellent, and explain not only why a certain answer is right, but why the others are wrong. I felt well prepared after taking the 1994 and 1999 AP Bio tests for practice in addition, and an SAT II.
This book covers everything that was on the AP that was not presented in my particular course book. I took the AP this morning and found that quite a few concepts I reviewed last minute in this book came in handy. However, it is a little boring to read at times, so if you plan to use it begin well in advance.
*******
Edit: I got my score, and it was a four. Much better than my grade in the class was-- I think this book helped a great deal.
great book.......2006-02-21
This book is very good. I didn't take any AP biology class. I just went through a text book and skimmed this prep book and landed myself a 5. Beware of lab questions though. This book under represented lab questions in its practice exams.
Clear and Concise Review.......2005-08-13
I purchased this book 2 months prior to the AP biology in 2005. I hadn't started reviewing the AP topics before that, although I was competent in our AP biology class at school. The book was a great resource for me. It doesn't require much previous knowledge and is able to summarize huge concepts in a couple of paragraphs and make the reader get the whole picture. The practice questions at the end of the chapters were very helpful because they accurately measured how well one had understood the topic. I am pleased with all aspects of the book. I got a 5 and I think I partly owe it to the clear and comprehensive review of this book
Helpful book. Well worth the money........2005-02-17
This book was very helpful for studying for my AP Biology Exam. It showed me what to know for the test. Ecology, Five kingdoms, the cell, etc. were all written very clear to study from--very thorough. I also highly recommend: The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations by Patrick Leonardi Volume 1, 2 and 3. These three study guides were especially helpful for the multiple choice section of the AP Exam. This is because the complexity of the questions were similar to AP type.

Customer Reviews:
Not That Great.......2005-03-08
Information on the subjects I have needed has been hard to find and incomplete. I do NOT recommend this book. I'm still looking for a really good general reference.
Poorly organized.......2003-11-24
Poorly organized. Try looking up something like the common "kennel cough" and you will find snippets of information under "respiratory system", then refered to infections (viral, then bacterial), but never get a concise, useful idea of the condition. Web site search via Google gives much better discussions.
A canine owner's "dictionary".......2003-03-06
Great reference book, without getting too technical. I consider it my "canine bible" and "dictionary" rolled into one. Arlene Millman, author of BOOMERANG - A MIRACLE TRILOGY (The tale of a remarkable Boston Terrier).
The Laymans'Merck.......2002-12-17
No, this does not have all of the info of the Merck Veterinary Manual, but most dog lovers and owners can be easily frustrated by the medical terminlogy etc. THIS however, is simplified and essential info for the average person to really learn so much about their dogs health. My Merck, this book and "Symptoms and Solutions" are my dog bible trio!! I can not tell you how many people I've been able to help w/ dog health problems, solutions and understanding the disease or condition.Worth your money!!
Comprehensive? Yes. User-friendly? NO!!!.......2001-12-19
Just like a parent should have a comprehensive pediatric medical guide for their children, dog owners should have a comprehensive medical guide for their dogs. And, technically, this one certainly fits the bill.
This book is thick for a reason. It covers nearly every medical condition, disease and ailment that you can think of. It also provides solid information on normal dog growth and development, feeding, and home health remedies.
HOWEVER, if you are looking for a user-friendly, easy-to-read, "For Dummies"-type canine medical reference, THIS IS NOT IT. I strongly disagree with some other reviewers who say otherwise. "The Book of Dogs" rivals your average human medical reference guide -- full of medical jargon and technical terms. I cannot find my way through this book without constant use of the glossary and index in the back. And I find myself sifting through page after page trying to locate the exact information I'm looking for. Not user-friendly at all -- especially in an emergency.
(By the way, I AM an educated -- albeit non-medical -- professional, and I STILL have problems understanding this book!)
Unless your dog has some kind of serious medical condition(s) -- my dog, for instance, has Sebaceous Adenitis, a rare auto-immune disease -- for which you need more detailed information, you don't really need this book. You (and your dog) are better off with a book like "What Your Dog Is Trying To Tell You: A Head-to-Tail Guide to Dogs' Symptoms And Their Solutions" by Stephanie Pedersen and John Simon.

Lot of locations.......2007-02-28
I just finished reading this book and was happy with the amount of information provided for all the locations around the Island. Some of the info I already new but some I didn't. I am looking forward to trying out some of the spots Tom highlighted. This book didn't go into a lot of How-to but I didn't think it was going to anyway. Well worth the read. Can't wait for spring.
OK Guide, But Lite on Info.......2006-01-28
I was looking forward to this book, but after reading it I must say I was disppointed. This book is a good attempt, and may be valuable to some who may be brand new to fishing, but it is really lacking in dept. It does a disservice to one of the most productive fishing areas on the coast. Compare this to "Fishing the New Jersey Coast" and you will know what I mean. That is the way it should be done. With all due respect to the 5 star review given, do you work for the author?
Very Light on Information.......2005-09-29
I read a lot of non-fiction books. Recently I have read a lot of books on Navigation, Boating and Fishing (over 20 books in 6 months). I could say that of these books every book had something that I felt, "I have never heard that before. That is a great technique or idea. I have to remember that.".
Fishing the Long Island Coast was totally absent of that kind of information. It felt contrived and drawn-out. It certainly felt that the Freshwater section was thrown-in as an afterthought when they realized that the format chosen for the book yielded a very short manuscript.
The fact that there is a section dedicated to the various fish species that could be found off Long Island just shows the audience this books may be valuable to (someone who has no fishing background).
My parting comment is; why include driving directions to each of the "hotspots"? There are certainly other, better sources of driving directions. Describe fishing to me, not driving.
Great fisherman's guide!.......2005-09-20
Having just finished reading Fishing the Long Island Coast by Tom Melton, I can honestly say I have never seen a more informative guide to salt water fishing on Long Island. I have been a fisherman for 40 years and found this book to be a definitive guide for the layman as well as expierenced fisherman.

If a native Spanish speaker were to tell you that the pez gordo (fat fish) met a merengue (meringue) with lots of pasta (noodles) who is going to become his media naranja (half an orange), you may not know whether to offer your condolences or your congratulations that is, unless you've read this first book in David Burke's Street Spanish series. Street Spanish 1 lets you quickly become an insider by presenting some of the most popular slang terms used throughout the many Spanish-speaking countries. With the help of entertaining dialogues, word games and drills, crossword puzzles, and word searches, you'll finally be able to understand the everyday language used on the street, in homes, offices, stores, and among family and friends.
Customer Reviews:
Useless and non-professional.......2006-08-04
Heavily infested with comments and explanations in English that constantly distract and do not allow to think in Spanish. I doubt that the author has any formal education in teaching foreign language. This overpriced CD set is worthless. Sorry for this harsh judgment, but from my 20+ year experience of professional translator inability of the author to teach is obvious.
Excellent book.......2006-06-27
A very helpful book for those wanting to learn how to speak the street Spanish and learn the buzz words. It puts you in the groove to be the hippest of your group. This book is absolutely essential!
Use it, but with caution.......2006-01-26
I've learned a lot of vocabulary from this book and it's amusing and well arranged. The fact that many of the expressions are not really 'slang' from the streets but just everyday 'colloquial' doesn't matter to me because they're useful anyway.
On the other hand, as soon as I started using it where I live in Spain people laughed and warned me that many of the expressions in the dialogues are either never employed here or they are out of date. So I still use it, but with caution, and I try the expressions out on Spanish friends before I learn them.
Not your best bet.......2004-09-24
This is a very mediocre slang book, typical of so many that are written from dictionaries instead of real living experience. Half the words are not slang at all...just examining the pages available for free look you see stuff like tropece, nena, platicar that are ordinary speech. No depth, nothing you don't learn in your SPanish class in Iowa.
Additionally, the Spanish itself is faulty---for instance, donanadie instead of dona nadie with tilda over the n in dona.
Not so hot. Better than that "Forbidden" and "Taboo" crap, but really....not for the serious speaker.
It's A Slang Thang!.......2004-09-09
What I like most about this book is that it tells you from which countries the Spanish slang words come from. That way I don't use Mexican Spanish slang when I am speaking to someone from Colombia and vice versa. What I don't like about the Spanish lessons in this book is that it does not come with an optional CD or Cassette in order to make sure that I am learning to pronounce the Spanish slang and Spanish words correctly. I also recommend the mp3 and pdf of the los insultos vulgares that come with the Learning Like Crazy course in Spanish. By using the two of them you should obtain "una boca muy sucia en espanol."

A WONDERFUL LITTLE BOOK!.......2006-01-06
For whatever reason, White Christmas never seems to get its due credit as one of the great Christmas movies of all-time. OK, so it may not be strictly a Christmas film, this story about two army buddies who help out their old General by putting on a show at his country inn is sparkling entertainment with great songs and all the glitz and glamour of classic Hollywood musicals. This little hardcover book commemorates the 50th anniversary of the film with lots of fun trivia and information about the film and it's stars.
Irving Berlin wrote White Christmas in 1941 for the film Holiday Inn. He was asked to write songs for different holidays and while the film had many great songs, White Christmas is the one that has become immortal. It has gone on to become not only the biggest selling Christmas song of all-time, but one of the biggest selling songs period. The book begins with a synopsis of the film and then presents brief bios of the cast: Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Vera-Ellen, Dean Jagger and Mary Wickes, as well as bios of Berlin, and director Michael Curtiz. You'll learn that Crosby was one of the original financers of the development of Audio Tape and that Kaye was a tireless volunteer for UNICEF.
Sprinkled like shiny tinsel throughout the book are little "Snow it all" fun facts and trivia about winter and snow, such as how to make snow cream, and how to make the perfect snowman or snow angels. This is accompanied by beautiful photography from this Technicolor extravaganza. Finally a CD is included with the book that features three rendition of White Christmas by Crosby, Louis Armstrong, and Vince Gill. It's a marvelous little Christmas collectible, one that anyone who loves the movie will treasure.
