Book Description

Most of the current books on stochastic control theory are written for students in mathematics or finance. This introduction is designed, however, for those interested in the relevance and applications of the theory's mathematical principles to economics. Therefore, mathematical methods are discussed intuitively and illustrated with economic examples. More importantly, mathematical concepts are introduced in language and terminology familiar to graduate students in economics.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good book that brings out the economic intuition.......2007-07-31

This is a nice book for optimization in continuous time. I see why somebody could be frustrated with lack of "Proof", however a book with hard-core proofs can miss the forest for the trees. This book strikes a good balance. The author is helpful in admitting where the proof is a mere outline and provides detailed references on where to look. The style of the book is very clear. I will recommend it very highly to economics and finance PhD students. The author provides nuggets of intuition which are very valuable.
The book is different from Shreve's book, which picks the examples from finance and serves a different purpose.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect tradeoff between intuition and rigor.......2006-04-11

This book covers the theory and application of dynamic programming in continuous time. It is the perfect mix of intuition and rigor, for someone who is working on applications of stochastic control. It explains enough theory and methods to get you going...

5 out of 5 stars Great for macro in continuous time.......2005-10-03

This book is very well written, the most prestine text about this subject I have ever laid eyes on. The best thing about this book is its focus on macroeconomics, books on this subject are normally focused on finance. I recommend this book for those who want to study macro in continuous time under uncertainty.

2 out of 5 stars lack of precision.......2005-05-19

When you would like to learn the basic issues of stochastic optimization in continuous time, and you are rather unfamiliar with probability theory, then this book is a bad choice. The treatment is far less rigorous then promised by the praise at the back cover of the book. The proofs are often not that rigorous to deserve the name of proof. As in so many books the author invokes the so-called principle of optimality, suggesting that it is an eternal truth. As a heuristic principle this is fine, it is only a theorem, when properly phrased, under certain conditions, see for instance the works of Bertsekas. Furtheron the notation is now and then misleading.
It is quite well possible, that in the hands of a good teacher this is a valuable book, but someone, who would like to learn the trade on her own, by using this book, is strongly advised not to do so, and instead start with a mathematically sound introduction to stochastic processes. Someone, who would like to have a good intro in the context of finance is strongly advised to consult the two latest books by Shreve. These books are in my view exemplary for a thorough introduction to stochastic processes in an applied context.

    Book Description

Innovation in the private and public sectors has been the subject of a great deal of study, since it is central to the economic growth and effective governance of most organizations. Determining the changes needed in an organization is less difficult than determining how to make the changes work. This volume is the result of a three-year study that investigated the factors associated with the implementation of program changes in a nonprofit community welfare agency.

The results of the research showed that a greater understanding of the implementation process was needed, both by the workers and administrators. In addition, factors other than "need" were determined to influence what action is taken to implement the recommendations. This book takes the results of the study and demonstrates how implementation can be successful in an organization.

This work includes factors such as administration behavior and perception, its effect on board members, mobility orientation, job satisfaction, and the prediction of program change and will be of interest to management in both the private and non-profit sector as well as students of organizational sociology and psychology.

        Book Description

The laboratory exercises in this manual are coordinated with Inquiry into Life, a general biology text that covers the entire field of biology. The text emphasizes how we can apply biological knowledge to our own lives and to our relationships with other organisms.Although each laboratory is referenced to the appropriate chapter in Inquiry into Life, this manual may be used in coordination with other general biology texts. This laboratory manual allows adaptation to a variety of course orientations and designs. There are a sufficient number of laboratories to permit a choice of activities over the length of the course. Many activities may be performed as demonstrations rather than as student activities, thereby shortening the time required to cover a particular concept.

5 out of 5 stars Inquiry into the Life is an excellent lab manual.......2003-01-09

I have been teaching freshman biology for 15 years. Mader's lab manual is the finest book that I have used. It has informative laboratories with outstanding discussions of the subject being studied. The manual is illustrated attractively, effectively, and amply. I would recommend the lab manual to any freshman biology professor who is interested in traditional labs.

I'm a drummer and have always had some glitches in my performances when I thought the pressure was on. I've read this book once thru and am already thinking differently on the stage. I've read tons of music books on the subject of letting go of the chatter in your head, but this blows them all away with concrete exercises and evaluations to gauge your mental toughness.

                  5 out of 5 stars a must read.......2004-12-06

if you've decided to open up that can of worms that is sports psych, then you really should read this gem. it is vastly superior to all his other books.

5 out of 5 stars Mastering the Mental side of sports.......2004-01-04

This book was given to me a few years ago by one of my coaches. This book is possibly the most helpful book that I have ever read. I am a goalie in ice hockey (15 years old) and have always been regarded as the hardest worker that people have ever seen. But when it came to big games, I clearly wasn't always my sharpest. Many coaches say that sports is 90% mental, but how can you improve your mental skills? Improving mental skills is not very physically demanding, but it does take commitment. Read this book and take this seriously! It could turn around your sports journey, or journey through life. It has for me and it is less than 200 pages! I highly recommend this book for any serious athletes of any age.

                  5 out of 5 stars the bible.......2001-09-28

suggested to me by a world cup winning athlete who owns and old out of print copy covered in tape to hold it together, this book is brilliant. my career as an elite athlete jumped a number of levels whilst reading it. his more recent book is nothing compared to this. go to your library and photocopy it, no one will sell it to you. it is the best.

James Loehr's book deserves 10 stars!

After reading many books on sports psychology and not getting anywhere, Mental Toughness Training for Sports guided me down the road to sporting success.

James Loehr explains what happens mentally to athletes during both great and terrible performances. You are then guided along analysing your own performances and gradually you gain more and more control over your mental and ultimately your physical performances.

This book is for the serious athelete, who has the patience to take the necessary steps required for success.

If you feel you are not producing your best in play due to mental obstacles, then this is the book for. It will change your life and give you control you thought only your opponents possessed.

As a teacher of many grade levels and English fluency levels, I found this book very useful. It has perhaps the best explanation I've read on "perfect" tenses. My ESL student couldn't understand why he should use a simple past tense versus a present perfect tense, and this book helped him.

The book features many useful charts on major and minor grammar topics. I find the charts very effective and easy to learn and teach. There are also plenty of exercises in this book, too.

I've used the book with 5th graders, 12th graders, and ESL adults. I highly recommend it. It's very well organized and quick, quick, quick to use in the classroom.

In Racism and Cultural Studies E. San Juan Jr. offers a historical-materialist critique of practices in multiculturalism and cultural studies. Rejecting contemporary theories of inclusion as affirmations of the capitalist status quo, San Juan envisions a future of politically equal and economically empowered citizens through the democratization of power and the socialization of property. Calling U.S. nationalism the new “opium of the masses,” he argues that U.S. nationalism is where racist ideas and practices are formed, refined, and reproduced as common sense and consensus.
Individual chapters engage the themes of ethnicity versus racism, gender inequality, sexuality, and the politics of identity configured with the discourse of postcoloniality and postmodernism. Questions of institutional racism, social justice, democratization, and international power relations between the center and the periphery are explored and analyzed. San Juan fashions a critique of dominant disciplinary approaches in the humanities and social sciences and contends that “the racism question” functions as a catalyst and point of departure for cultural critiques based on a radical democratic vision. He also asks urgent questions regarding globalization and the future of socialist transformation of “third world” peoples and others who face oppression.
As one of the most notable cultural theorists in the United States today, San Juan presents a provocative challenge to the academy and other disciplinary institutions. His intervention will surely compel the attention of all engaged in intellectual exchanges where race/ethnicity serves as an urgent focus of concern.

5 out of 5 stars Toward a Politics of Hope.......2002-10-10

The Philippines, a U.S. neocolony, has now captured the world's attention as the second front in the "war against terrorism" after Afghanistan. In this milieu of intensified global crisis and emergency, Cultural Studies must shift its attention to the hinterlands of Empire and enter/sustain dialogue with the many worldwide who, because they are deeply concerned with peace, genuine democracy, and social justice, are taking a firm stand to challenge the brutality of U.S. imperial hegemony. In 1898 the Philippines (from which E. San Juan, Jr. hails) was violently colonized by the United States; it shares this history with Puerto Rico, Cuba, Guam, and Hawai'i. Currently, the Abu Sayaaf-- a counterinsurgency tool created by the CIA and the Armed Forces of the Philippines-- is used to justify the presence of thousands of U.S. troops dominating the Philippines. Recently, Sec. Colin Powell declared the major progressive insurgency groups, the peasant-based New People's Army and the Communist Party of the Philippines, part of the coalition called the National Democratic Front of the Philippines, as terrorist groups.

                    E. San Juan, Jr., one of our most important and prolific Filipino cultural theorists and a major critic of Establishment postcolonial discipline, offers a crucial intervention for our times. In BEYOND POSTCOLONIAL THEORY (1998), San Juan argues that the progressive insurgent forces of the Philippine National Democratic mass movement play a vital part of the "postcolonial" subaltern resistance, but have been muted and silenced by post-al studies. San Juan's latest RACISM AND CULTURAL STUDIES (Duke UP, 2002) expands this critique in fresh, innovative ways that speak directly to our current collective desire for liberation and freedom for all.

Boldly pushing against the historical limitations of fashionable theoretical trends of the academy, San Juan urgently asks us to reclaim the various rich and dynamic Marxist traditions (both Western and Third World Marxisms) of theorizing the connection between culture/knowledge production and the struggle for radical social transformation (the twin task of ideological and material struggle). In RACISM AND CULTURAL STUDIES (RCS), San Juan offers a rigorous historical materialist method of regrounding the dominant "new times=new politics" model of contemporary Cultural Studies. Thus, with San Juan's alternative methodology we shift from reified notions of difference to a dialectical regrounding in which difference is conceived as, in the words of Red Feminist Teresa Ebert, "difference within a material system of exploitation" (see her LUDIC FEMINISM for an excellent critique of post-al difference). This shifting of grounds enables San Juan to bring to the fore the importance of analyzing the complex ways in which difference-- race, gender, sexuality-- is historically produced and reproduced. A leitmotif of this book, to be sure, is the advancement of Marx's challenge to idealism. It is not enough to interpret the world. We must collectively and creatively struggle for a radically transformed society in which difference will no longer be produced by a racialized and gendered division of labor (exploitative social relations of production). Instead, genuine differences will emerge: so that each can live "according to his/her needs and abilities."

In this process of regrounding, San Juan acknowledges that we do, indeed, live in "new" times, but this "new-ness" must be contextualized properly (recall Jameson's mantra: "historicize, historicize, historicize"). San Juan asserts: "New post-Cold War realignments compel us to return to a historical-materialist analysis of political economy and its overdeterminations in order to grasp the new racial politics of transnationality and multiculturalism" (42). One of the central goals of this book is to confront the insidious ways in which racism, which established the foundation of the U.S. nation-state as a "racial-socioeconomic formation," functions as an international political force that is gendered, sexualized, and "naturalized" through U.S. nationalism. The focus on race and its dialectical connection to class resonates with other recent publications, such as Mark Solomon's THE CRY WAS UNITY: COMMUNISTS AND AFRICAN AMERICANS, 1917-1936 (1998). There Solomon asserts that "Capitalism's cornerstone was' laid by slavery and fortified by racism."

Far from advocating a return to economically deterministic, vulgar Marxism, San Juan provides a breathtaking inventory and synthesis of various figures from both Western and Third World Marxist traditions-- running the gamut from Antonio Gramsci to Frantz Fanon-- that provide examples of how to dialectically challenge current post-al temptations of abstracting civil society from the state, culturalizing hegemony, divorcing nation from class, and conflating the nationalism of oppressed neocolonial nation-states with the nationalisms of oppressor nation-states. The extended afterword focuses on the Philippine movement for genuine national sovereignty in relation to the Filipino Diaspora in a way that concretizes the dialectical method of global cognitive mapping proposed throughout the book.

An interdisciplinary tour de force, RACISM AND CULTURAL STUDIES offers timely critiques and suggestions for advancing a unique "methodology of the oppressed" that may, for the moment, seem submerged or repressed in the industrialized global North, but is, as I write, being tested and refined in the overexploited global South where the wretched of the earth have been proclaiming through protracted organized mass struggle (based on a worker-peasant alliance) that "another world is possible." In the so-called "Third World," subalterns have uttered this expression long before it became the clarion call of the young and courageous anti-globalization movement in the North.

I urge all of us to engage San Juan's latest book-- to learn from his lessons in dialectical analysis and his suggestions for creating strategies for cognitive mapping, to listen to his impassioned appeal to activists, insurgent intellectuals (both organic and academic), and all democratic minded people to critique the central roles that racism and U.S. nationalism play in the ways in which global capitalism wrecks havoc on the daily lives of millions all over the world. After a careful reading of this book, one will appreciate its ability to sustain in new and imaginative ways a politics of hope in these perilous times-- an intervention that can, to quote Raymond Williams, "make hope practical, rather than despair convincing" (quoted in RCS, 313).

                      Book Description

What is black culture? Does it have an essence? What do we lose and gain by assuming that it does, and by building our laws accordingly? This bold and provocative book questions the common presumption of political multiculturalism that social categories such as race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality are defined by distinctive cultural practices.

Richard Ford argues against law reform proposals that would attempt to apply civil rights protections to "cultural difference." Unlike many criticisms of multiculturalism, which worry about "reverse discrimination" or the erosion of core Western cultural values, the book's argument is primarily focused on the adverse effects of multicultural rhetoric and multicultural rights on their supposed beneficiaries.

In clear and compelling prose, Ford argues that multicultural accounts of cultural difference do not accurately describe the practices of social groups. Instead these accounts are prescriptive: they attempt to canonize a narrow, parochial, and contestable set of ideas about appropriate group culture and to discredit more cosmopolitan lifestyles, commitments, and values.

The book argues that far from remedying discrimination and status hierarchy, "cultural rights" share the ideological presuppositions, and participate in the discursive and institutional practices, of racism, sexism, and homophobia. Ford offers specific examples in support of this thesis, in diverse contexts such as employment discrimination, affirmative action, and transracial adoption.

This is a major contribution to our understanding of today's politics of race, by one of the most distinctive and important young voices in America's legal academy.

This book looks at how the construction of blacks as unreasonable and illiberal in North American society creates obstacles in efforts to create equity in education. Examining the infamous conflict between a predominantly black community and a predominantly Jewish teacher's union, this story shows the limitations of some class narratives and the problematic misrepresentations of anti-Semitism that impede struggles for racial and social justice in Northeast urban areas.
