As the Age of Reason nears its 500-year anniversary, the authors of The 500-Year Delta argue that our world is on the precipice of massive change. The authors, businessmen Jim Taylor and Watts Wacker, believe this transformation will manifest itself as a shift from reason-based to chaos-based logic; the collapse of producer-controlled consumer markets; and a splintering of social, political, and economic organization. In pithy phrases and thought-provoking chapters, they outline strategies to help companies and individuals succeed in the increasingly unpredictable future they describe. Taylor and Wacker are skilled at incorporating historical facts to support their ideas of how corporate societies and world communities will evolve. The book is designed to help business owners and private citizens understand every element of their complex world so that they can excel in a future the authors term the "Age of Possibility."

    Book Description

In the tradition of Alvin Toffler's Future Shock and John Naisbitt's Megatrends, The 500-Year Delta offers an enthralling glimpse of what businesses and individuals should expect as the five-hundred-year-old "Age of Reason" segues into the "Age of Possibility."

According to visionary futurists Jim Taylor and Watts Wacker, we stand at not one but several crossroads-marked points of discontinuity between past and present. These include:

For a world caught in this swirling intersection of change, Jim Taylor and Watts Wacker provide tested strategies to help companies and individuals reset their course toward an unpredictable future, offering new models to accommodate the increasing chaos of everyday life.

Describing our present point of transformation as a "triple witching hour," the authors chart a future course that is at once bracing, forbidding, joyous, and ultimately redemptive.

    1 out of 5 stars Maddening.......2006-08-10

A stunningly bad exercise in stupidity. The book was both poorly reasoned and poorly written. The authored failed to support their "argument" with even the most rudimentary analysis and quantitative evidence. In addition, they completely failed to place their loose ideas into context and apparently have no understanding of history. To wit: A poll tax on voting? Um, excuse me? Have you no education in the history of voting oppression and the fight for civil rights in history?

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and insightful but overly wordy.......2001-04-13

In short the book could have been about 60% shorter. At times the hypothesis drawn are illuminating but very often the authors are spending entirely too much time to support their insights. My feeling is that anyone reading a book such as this doesn't necessarily need a whole lot of convincing as long as there is some sound rationale and telling examples to support the theories.

Having just completed the book I would recommend that anyone interested in picking up the book just look at the last 15 pages to get a sense of the nature of the book where the authors make predictions regarding the next 500 months and the next 500 years.

There are however some very keen insights on the power and use of technology (connectivity), tribalism, the role of corporations and government, business and social constructs, the importance of constant education, the nature of chaos, the power of the consumer... and almost all of this is addressed from primarily a marketing perspective.

There was very little that was written that I disagreed with but I feel like the same thing could have been said in many fewer words.

    2 out of 5 stars Baloney.......2000-07-15

The only thing I can say after reading this book is--baloney! I've never read a more useless business book such as this. I have no doubt that the author has never worked a day in his life. Get a job! Get a life!

    2 out of 5 stars Baloney warning.......1999-09-04

I couldn't agree more with the reviewer from "Sodom-on-the-Bay." Beware authors whose self-esteem rests so strongly on their image as iconoclasts. Beware them particularly when they resort to "paradox" as an explanation for any line of reasoning that leaves them painted into a corner. On the other hand, these guys are trying to take a fresh look at business and marketing conundrums, and their stories often yield interesting insights which, unfortunately, they're not so great at articulating or generalizing from. Instead, they opt for sounding "deep" by claiming that the stories defy traditional analysis. A useful rule of thumb might be to skim any paragraph that deals in abstracts (high balderdash quotient there) and pay more attention to the anecdotes.

    3 out of 5 stars Well-intentioned, occasionally useful, but..........1999-06-10

You really have to approach this book with your baloney detectors on 'High.' There's a lot of excellent, insightful analysis on what's going on with the change 'jerk' (where 'jerk' is defined as the rate of change of the rate of change -- the acceleration of acceleration) of recent years, where changes in technology drive societal changes at an expanding pace. There's also a whole lot of unfocused hogwash and one-true-wayism; these kids take themselves quite seriously, in that bedrock way that people who think they *don't* take themselves too seriously sometimes do. You can sift through the bullpuckey to find a good haul of useful nuggetry, but if you swallow this book whole, you'll find that the sharp corners don't go down so easy.

    Book Description

Against a backdrop of downsizing, restructuring and other devastating changes within today's organizations, how does the executive actually go about getting things done? Not simply through the exercise of raw power, argues Gottlieb. Indeed, power and influence are not the same. Most articles in academic and professional business periodicals concentrate on power and provide scant insight into influencing--its techniques and various behaviors. In this work, Gottlieb, a specialist in management development and training, takes a big step toward correcting this imbalance and the confusion it creates. He explores a variety of approaches to getting work done that are both non-traditional and non-hierarchical in structure. Matrix or systems approaches have become commonplace, staff levels have thinned, and today's managers are increasingly dependent upon the cooperation of others in the organization, people over whom the manager has no direct authority. Managerial success depends, therefore, on an ability to influence others to comply and prioritize productively and efficiently. The book identifies the strategies available to those who want to develop or hone their influencing skills. It helps executives adapt their current influencing style to the new demands and requirements for leadership in today's unstable organizations, for example by building effective alliances and strong bases inside and outside of the organization for the exercise of one's influence. The book also helps managers construct dynamic organizational action plans for empowering and motivating others, and for providing bosses, peers, and subordinates with incentives to achieve goals. Gottlieb covers techniques to enhance persuasive and related selling techniques, examines several motivation issues for subordinates, and presents managers with approaches to using influence in the dual role of coach and counselor for staff and peers. Well illustrated with case studies, scenarios, and dialogues, the book will be essential for decision makers throughout the public and private sectors, and for all who aspire to decision-making positions in all types of organizations.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Power or influence?.......2000-06-08

The setting for this book is the modern, downsized organisation, in which :

"managers and supervisors are continually called upon to do more with less support and are taking on more responsibility - often with less authority. This erosion of authority ... is the medium in which the need for influence as a palpable skill germinates. This need is then fed ... by ambiguity, change and insecurity, and grows to be the top leadership and survival skill required of today's managers."

Much of the material is a careful and useful codification of principles that are in themselves quite unsurprising and there are times when sections descend into a catalogue of what should be fairly obvious. However, it is very useful to have a book that makes such a clear distinction between the exercise of power and that of influence and that gives comprehensive coverage of the nature and dynamics of different kinds of networks.

However, it is a bit disconcerting that there is no discussion of the ethics of using influence. Just as the boundaries of the legitimate use of power are an important area of concern, so should be the boundaries of the legitimate use of influence and ways of influencing people.

    Book Description

Diagnostically illustrated with light and scanning electron micrographs, Comparative Wood Anatomy lucidly introduces dicotyledon wood in terms of cell types and their variations, pertinent literature, taxonomic distribution of features, terminology, and methods for preparation. Two final chapters present syntheses: taxonomic achievements of wood studies; and the evolutionary relationship between structure, physiological function, and ecology. This detailed survey serves a wide range of interests: identification, systematics, evolution and physiology.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Heavy going even for the specialist.......2000-04-27

The price suggests this is a book for institutional libraries only. This is quite correct. Dr Carlquist has made a career of studying wood of small diameter stems: shrubs, subshrubs, liana's, etc. He has brought together an enormous body of knowledge on the variation in their wood anatomy and came up with many a theory to explain this. This book takes stock of his work up to 1988. Since many of his conclusions are controversial this work should only be read within hand's reach of an extended reference library: food for thought for the specialist!

Note: for those interested in practical wood anatomy (wood identification) the book by R.Bruce Hoadley is a good introduction. For those interested in an academic introduction to systematic wood anatomy the work 'Anatomy of the Dicotyledons' 2nd edition Volume II (1983) by Metcalfe & Chalk is the standard work: a good solid reference.

    Book Description

Biology is a science full of terms and concepts that range from the hard-to-imagine, such as the structure of an atom, to those we see every day, such as the structure of our own face in the mirror. How are these ideas and concepts related? What's the best way to learn and remember them? Designed to be used with the class textbook (or in place of the totally incomprehensible one!), Homework Helpers: Biology is a user friendly review book that will make any student-or those trying to help them-feel like he or she has a private Biology tutor. Concepts from the most obvious to the most complex are presented and explained in everyday English with a wide variety of diagrams, charts and illustrations. The Homework Helpers Series is just what students need to boost their confidence and give them the help they need to ace even the most challenging classes.

I recently needed to brush up on my Biology. (I had Bio in collge.) After a horrible experience with the mistake-riddled Barron's Biology the Easy Way, I decided to give this book a try. Especially since time was of the essence.

The format of this book is GREAT. You get all the info you need in a very clear, direct, concise way. Lots of charts, lots of diagrams, and lots of test questions make learning very simple and quick.

Whether you need a quick review of your Biology concepts like me, or you are struggling in your Biology class, this book can help you out.

      5 out of 5 stars Improving your Mom's game.......2003-09-08

I gave this book to my mom who is a senior golfer playing in the high 90's. In one month, she reduced her handicap by 9 strokes after reading this book. This is true, as I can see it in her smile. That's only about $2 per stroke - good book investment. Now she has her whole gang at the country club reading the book and trying to catch her score.

Excellent book descriptions on various techniques used to cut strokes from your game.

      4 out of 5 stars Solid.......2001-06-26

A very solid book on all aspects of the short game by one of the top rated PGA instructors. Includes practice routines and drills, equipment needed, course management, grip, distance control, shots for every situation(rough, sand, backspin, chipping, and even a little on putting and much more), as well as a list of golf schools if you REALLY need help. Even lists who and what to watch for when watching golf on TV. I love "Idiot's" books for reference, this one included, for their great indexing and detailed contents pages that let you go directly to a section without reading the whole book if you are looking for an instant solution to one particular problem. I would also recommend Dave Pelz's great book.

      Book Description

The first tarot to celebrate an African-American culture, this book and 79-card deck capture both the spirit and the imagery of Voodoo's African, West Indian, and Catholic influences. Ancient and earth-honoring, Voodoo's practices take on different forms specific to time and place, but its essence remains focused on the loa--the potent spiritual forces of Voodoo that are manifested directly through human beings and their actions.

The authors draw strong parallels between the Waite and Thoth Tarots, the Kabalistic Tree of Life, and the Voodoo tradition as it is practiced in New Orleans. Just as the major and minor arcana of the Tarot represent the archetypes of the human psyche and the natural forces of our world, so do the loa of Voodoo embody the primal energies of the universe. With a variety of spreads and readings, the authors show how the Tarot can be an idea channel through which the loa exercise their powers to teach, advise, and initiate the serious student into their mysteries.

I've used various decks throughout the years a couple I grew some what attached to and others not at all. I found after working with this deck just a couple times that every reading I have done has been extremely accurate. The cards seem to speak to me metaphoricaly speaking of course. No other deck have I found this to be so at least to the same extent. I highly recommend to at least give this deck a try.

5 out of 5 stars A Truly Wonderful Tarot Deck and Book Set!.......2006-08-17

I purchased this Tarot Deck - not so much for the use with Tarot readings but after reading: Vodou Visions - as you can use the cards as a focus point in your rituals - both books are highly recommended to those interested in Vodou... I was pleased to see that the cards can easily be used as a Tarot Deck as well - the information inside is so well done and so easy to read that it makes previous knowledge of the tarot easy to use with this deck (if you read the book) There is only 34 pages to read, before you get to "each card meaning" and at the end of that section there is another (Approx. 40 pages), which is a "How To" section and very enlightening... There is also information at the back about each meaning for each card to make things easier for beginners...
This set will work for both beginners and experienced - at the end of the book the author has a Last Judgment and in case she ever reads her reviews I would like to tell her that the book in fact was worth the sacrifice of the trees that went into making the pages, so filled with magick, and it has indeed brought me closer to the mystery's of life and will continue to do so as I continue my journey of life... I will add my own sacrifice to the Loa for leading me to this Treasure!
      Brightest of Blessings!

5 out of 5 stars Mystical Ritual and Powerful Readings..........2000-11-17

The New Orleans Voodoo Tarot set is a wonderful way to introduce oneself to the strength and power of Yoruban practices. The four trumps are arranged by four traditions - Rada, Petro, Santeria and Congo - and the major arcana is a conjoining of them all. The book illustrates stories, ideas for ritual and offerings, and even VeVes for each of the lwas or orishas represented, and gives the reader and practitioner powerful suggestions for the incorporation of spreads in ritual settings (including offerings!). It is not a deck for someone new to Tarot, but is a wonderful way to learn more about these incredibly rich and diverse traditions. Being a student of Tarot for the past 13 years, I found this deck highly stimulating and inspiring!

Graphic Guide to Frame Construction (Paperback)

After preparing 8 pages of detailed engineering-size construction drawings for contractors to bid on a two-story addition to our house, I came across this book. Even though I have many years of (mostly remodeling) experience, this book provided lots of great tips on strengthening foundations and walls, flashing, roofing and other areas. Those drawings have now been modified to incorporate what I've learned. Lucky I read this book BEFORE starting the project. Change orders, once construction begins, are costly, since you have little leverage with the contractor at that point.

Materials and techniques used in frame construction have evolved over the years, and the previous (similar) book I had was substantially obsolete. This one cites the latest materials and approaches, as of the year 2000, and is well worth the cost for anyone contemplating a framing job of almost any size. It's doubtful that any contractor knows the best methods to do everything this book explains, not to mention non-contractors. That makes this book a good resource for any experience level. About half of the book's pages have one or more detailed drawings to show you how to do "it" (see customer images for a sample). The spiral binding is particularly helpful in using it on-the-job, or to photo-copy or scan.

The five chapters, foundations, floors, walls, roofs, and stairs, cover virtually every aspect of frame construction, including decks and porches.

The book doesn't cover everything. For example, there is no mention of the APA (Wood Engineering Association), Narrow Wall Bracing Method, an important subject when building sunrooms, or other structure with narrow corner walls or walls between window or door openings. Nevertheless, it's a great reference well worth the price.

This is a very easy to follow guide to wood frame construction. I recommend it as a basic reference.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Wood Frame Construction.......2007-05-31

This is a wonderful book to have on the reference shelf. It answers so many questions about wood frame construction in a clear manner with great graphic depictions.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable for Anyone Who Wants to Build.......2007-04-09

I am a beginning amateur builder of outbuildings on my property, and this book is wonderful. Easy to understand, the pictures are very descriptive. It is all I need. I gave a beat-up copy (after ordering another for myself) to a friend who just got his contractor's license and the next day he acted as though I'd given him gold. I recommend getting the spiral bound version - so much easier to use on the job site. This book cannot be rated high enough.
