Book Description
This book is a lucid, straightforward introduction to the concepts and techniques of statistical physics that students of biology, biochemistry, and biophysics must know. It provides a sound basis for understanding random motions of molecules, subcellular particles, or cells, or of processes that depend on such motion or are markedly affected by it. Readers do not need to understand thermodynamics in order to acquire a knowledge of the physics involved in diffusion, sedimentation, electrophoresis, chromatography, and cell motility--subjects that become lively and immediate when the author discusses them in terms of random walks of individual particles.

Awesome........2007-06-15
Awesome. You will learn a lot about diffusion, stat mech, and even transport phenomena a tthe cellular level. Not worth 27 bucks tho.
An easy, enjoyable read!.......2005-10-02
Random walks in Biology explains concepts of diffusion driven processes in a lucid, intuitive and didactic fashion. The approach lacks mathematical rigor, but abounds in examples to incite interest in one and all. For physicists, this book offers a delightful peek into biophysical processes where their mathematical skills and knowledge of random processes can be utilized and tested. For biologists and chemists, the book presents an erudite route to understanding how these random processes, diffusion and fluctuations influence function and design of biological contrusts.
Good Source Book on Random Walk Maths - Easy Read.......2005-05-29
I bought this book in 1995 to get an understanding of random walk phenomena.
The random walk equations are mostly biologically based.
That is equations that describe the motion of biological things.
Type of things covered ( including but not limited to)
Ficks equations
Diffusion
Drift
drag
Diffusion at Equilibrium
Derivation of Boltzman equation
Importance of KT
Mean Square Velocity
Einstien-Scmoluchowski relation
Flagellar propulsion
Motility of Escherichia Coli
Probability Distributions (Gaussian , Binomial , Poisson)
etc
The book is a fairly easy read.
You'll need at least high school to uni maths background.
The maths is fairly practical stuff ( translatable to s/w code )
There are plenty of graphs and diagrams.
This book rocks........1999-07-02
If you're interested in learning the physics underlying cellular biology, then you should read this book.
The physics is pithy and the language is clear.

Description:
We describe the fine-scale movement of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis based on analyses of video recordings of undisturbed individuals in the two habitats which mainly differed in food availability, urchin barrens and grazing front. Urchin activity decreased as urchin density increased. Individuals alternated between moving and being stationary and their behaviour did not appear to be affected by either current velocity (within the range from 0 to 15 cm s^-^1) and temperature (2.3 to 6.0 ^oC). Movement of individuals at each location was compared to that predicted by a random walk model. Mean move length (linear distance between two stationary periods), turning angle and net squared displacement were calculated for each individual. The distribution of turning angles was uniform at each location and there was no evidence of a relationship between urchin density and either move length or urchin velocity. The random model predicted a higher dispersal rate at locations with low urchin densities, such as barrens habitats. However, the movement was sometimes greater or less than predicted by the model, suggesting the influence of local environmental factors. The deviation of individual paths from the model revealed that urchins can be stationary or adopt a local (displacement less than random), random or directional movement. The net daily distance displaced on the barrens, predicted by a random walk model, was similar to the observed movement recorded in our previous study of tagged urchins at one site, but less than that observed at a second site. We postulate that the random dispersal of urchins allows individuals on barrens to reach the kelp zone where food is more abundant although the time required to reach the kelp zone may be considerable (months to years). Urchins decrease their rate of dispersal once they reach the kelp zone so that they likely remain close to this abundant food sources for long periods.

Since the dawn of history, no other living thing (save, possibly, the snake) has been as reviled by humankind as the wolf. Still, wolves and people have been drawn to each other since the beginning. Canis lupus bounds through our folklore, howls in our dreams, and--occasionally--competes with us on the hunt. As one zoologist imagines it: "Through the cold of winter the wolf made music in the mysterious darkness and sometimes, in curiosity, sat just beyond the dwindling circle of firelight and watched." The curiosity was mutual; this is the feared animal, ironically, that gave rise to man's best friend. Yet only recently has science begun to understand these complex social mammals. Enter biologist L. David Mech. Years of research during the 1960s in Michigan's Isle Royale National Park provided Mech with a level of firsthand knowledge shared by few in the field. In 1970 he compiled his findings (updated in 1980) into the preeminent document of its kind. Thomas McNamee, author of The Return of the Wolf to Yellowstone, calls the book the "best single source of information on wolf biology," and refers to its author as "the undisputed king of wolf research." When government officials in the early 1990s decided to embark on an ambitious project to reintroduce wolves into their former range of Yellowstone National Park, they called on Mech's expertise. All this is to say that, if you want to learn about wolves, you cannot ignore this seminal work or its author. Chapters cover wolf evolution, range, and physiology; society and pack behavior; reproduction; hunting and predator-prey relationships; and the species' uncertain future. Like any self-respecting scientist, Mech includes all the hard data, but he presents his work in an engaging manner that is accessible to a broader audience, drawing heavily on anecdotes and personal experience.
"Many people strongly dislike the wolf," Mech writes, "others rush to its defense. But no one denies that the animal is strong, powerful, intelligent, keen, and dynamic." While persecution by man has severely restricted its current status, the tide is turning, thanks to education and conservation efforts. After all, a night without a howl echoing somewhere across the landscape would surely be a colder, less alive night. --Langdon Cook

Dedicated to Mojo........2006-01-24
Listen. If you interested in this subject, this is the book to get.
It's soft cover, black-and-white, dense text. The book is laid-out like a research paper. The writing is scientific, yet clear and readable. There are photographs, charts, tables, maps, and graphs. There is a comprehensive bibliography.
The information presented includes biology, as well as information on individual behavior, pack behavior, and the social life of wolves. So much learning to do.
If you love wolves or canids, this is the book.
A Good Resource for anyone interested in wolves.......2004-04-11
This was the first book I studied before I bought my wolfdog. It's a great general reference book on wolves, factual and not biased. It's especially useful for understanding wolf behavior and body language, which one must aquaint one's self with before considering getting a wolfdog. Some of data is outdated, such as showing the wolf and domestic dog as separate branches on the canine family tree, but by and large it's a good reference book.
Aaawwwwoooooo!.......2004-01-27
I simply wish to echo what was said in the previous two reviews of this book. If one wants a primer on wolves for lab, classroom or at home reading this is the one to get.
It is a highly enjoyable book easy to understand for a wide ranging audience. It is my hope this book will inspire it's readers to probe deeper and consider reading further on the topic, for example: Wolves of Minong: Isle Royale's Wild Community (Ann Arbor Paperbacks) by Durward Leon Allen.
Fantastic, informative and 'A MUST READ'.......2003-01-08
For anyone with a serious interest in Wolf Ecology or Dog Psychology this is a'Must Read!'. In the book Mech draws on his own observations of wolf behaviour, as well as those of other influential wolf researchers. Full of information and observation on the ecology, sociology, behaviour and communication of wolves, I have found this book invaluable in my research into Dog Physcology, and have even applied some of what I learnt from its pages to the training of my Inuit pup.
fascinating book with many, well researched details.......2000-05-10
This book fascinates every wolf lover even more of this species, and those, who haven't decided yet what to think about wolves, might start to love them and "fight" for the recovery of this species. It gives many details about behaviour, ecology, and conservation of wolves. Despite being written in the 90ths most of its information is still up to date. This book is used by many students, but is equally suitable for the interested public as Mech manages to describe the facts in clear, understandable words. It is highly recommendable for people who want to learn more about wolves.

Book Description
Kevlar is a strong (40% stronger than fiberglass) material, perfect for building light-weight (35 pounds for a 17-foot canoe), fast, maintenance-free canoes. The only problem with Kevlar canoes is their cost--$2,000 or more. With this book, the most inexperienced home builder can turn out a handsome canoe for an investment of about $600 and a few weekends. The principal tools needed are a sharp pair of scissors and a $5 hand plane--and the method is astonishingly easy and forgiving. Featured are designs for a stable family canoe, a solo canoe, and a wilderness tripper, any of which can be built right from this book.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource.......2007-08-28
The guide has some very excellent information on creating a plug and molding a canoe. We found it to be a very good resource when making a copy of one of our designs.
The use of common materials to create a high quality canoe is insightful, inexpensive and the directions are easy to follow. Concepts are explained well, with plenty of pictures and should make the process easy to replicate.
Overall this book is very well done and a valuable guide for anyone wanting to build their own boat.
Interesting book but method is not for me.......2005-11-29
This is an interesting book. I liked reading about how to make a male mold. It definitely is for builders who want a light boat and are not really concerned with looks. I am not sure that the costs are as low as the author writes though so shop around carefully for Kevlar because this is very expensive material. Check to make sure that you are not sacrificing a few pounds for hundred of dollars more in materials. Glued lapstrake plywood building and cedar strip can be very light, beautiful looking boats too at fairly low costs if you build yourself. Make sure you check out all options.
After reading the book, I realized this method of building would be too expensive for me (due to Kevlar costs).
DIY Kevlar Canoe... and it is so easy.......2003-05-08
I was in the market to purchase a kevlar canoe when I stumbled across this book. This book does such a good job of explaining how to build your own Kevlar canoe, that I gave up the search for a new one and decided to build my own. This book lets the reader know that with some very simple techniques, almost anyone can build a Kevlar canoe. I am currently in the middle of my project and I have been very happy with the level of detail provided in this book.
Well put together.......2002-01-13
This book was an excellent guide to building a composite canoe (or anything like it). I read it and got started with no previous experience. It answered every question that came up and I didn't run into anything I didn't expect. I would suggest this book to anyone who wants a guide to doing this sort of composite work.
Too much fun doing it yourself.......2001-11-25
I followed this book and built my canoe. It was more a therapy project for me so it took longer than an average person, but it is doable as a summer project. No special skills required and just basic tool knowledge. Read the book carefully and understand what you are going to do before you do it and you'll do great. As the other reviews have mentioned, there are some gray areas, but with a little thought, you can work this out with no problem. One question I had, I wrote to the publisher and they forwarded my letter to the author who responded back to me--all in a timely manner. Had the canoe out for the maiden voyage a few weeks back and everything went great! Very rewarding to build it yourself.

Do not waste your time or why is Amazon pushing this piece of junk.
Poorly written, combined with poor advice makes this book a waste of money and time. Commercial interests hype the book, yet there is little in it that is compeling.

Speak to influence who?.......2002-02-22
Quite honestly I found myself very bored reading this book. It's an OK book if you want to learn how to speak in general, but look elsewhere if your wanting to get into voice-overs. This book did absolutely nothing for me, in voice-overs or otherwise.
Yawn.

Book Description
Love and friendship, desire and intrigue - combined with a perilous journey into the wilderness of Alaska - spark this exciting sequel to Forever and the Night
Kay Westmore is adjusting to life in Anchorage, Alaska, and a demanding new job as director of Denali National Park and Preserve, one of the country's last wilderness frontiers. She and her partner of two years, Lela Newlin, are also caring for a dear friend who is fighting a life-threatening disease. Just when life seems challenging enough, Kay's former boss, Grace Perry, barges back into her world - bringing with her the intrigue of Washington D.C politics. Now a high paid consultant for the Senate sub-committee on environmental affairs, Perry recruits Kay for a perilous mission into the Alaskan wilderness Kay knows so well. It is a journey that involves danger, subterfuge and the tracking of an enemy prepared to use an unspeakable weapon. As the adventure unfolds before her, Kay meets Tory Mitchell, a government agent assigned to track a deadly weapon and a determined enemy. Sparks fly when the two women's strong-willed personalities clash... and then a romantic attraction grows, threatening not just their mission, but Kay's relationship with Lela... and everything else Kay believes in - including herself.
Customer Reviews:
Great Blend of Romance and Mystery.......2005-04-22
This is the third in a reasonably good series set in the Alaskan wilderness (book 1 - Love on the Line, book 2 - Forever and the Night). Kay Westmore is called on by her former boss, Grace Perry, to go on a covert mission to uncover an illegal plutonium mining operation. Kay goes on the mission with her trusted colleague Russ, but they also have to work with CIA agent Tory Mitchell. The worst part is Kay has to lie about the mission to Lela, her lover of two years, and leave while her best friend is suffering through chemo for breast cancer. There are no phones where they're going.
Young delivers a quality story by intertwining the details of the mission with the reluctant romance between Kay and Tory. She also gets Russ involved in helping Kay deal with her guilt for cheating on Lela. Instead of being angry with Kay for her indiscretion, this reader felt only sorrow for how things finally ended between the three women.
I've read most of Young's books. This is one of her best.
