I really did appreciate reading this book. It was an eyeopener to what really may be occuring behind the scenes in Chinatowns across the nation. The book also covers what it is really like ot be a Chinese immigrant. Recommended reading.

Clear, concise, compassionate.......2003-03-10

I assigned this book to my Asian-American Studies class prior to having read it myself, on the strength of colleagues' recommendations. This book is a rare combination -- an eye-popping page turner that is also informative, ethically reponsible non-fiction. I couldn't put the book down until I had finished it. I felt as though I had met a wise insider who decided to spill secrets for the long-term good of the community. Mr. Kwong's analysis is clear and compelling. I can't say enough good things about this book.

Reality Meets the Movies.......1999-06-28

Sometimes Reality is more entertaining than the movies. Peter Kwong introduces us to a Chinatown seldom seen by outsiders. His portrayal of Chinatown's underworld hold over politics and his understandings of the ethnic enclave are both accurate and revealing. This is a MUST READ for anyone interested in learning about the happenings inside the Chinatowns of New York City and and other cities all across America. Along with William Lee's Chinese Playground, this book gives us the big picture in the understanding of the workings in today's urban communities.

The most recent (and, I think, the best) edition of this book is an excellent text for a biomedical ethics class in college, medical school, or law school. It would probably be considered elementary for such a course in a graduate philosophy program. It is also a very good, well-written and complete book for interested citizens to find out about the most pressing issues in the field.

This book is excellent reading material for anyone who isn't nervous about delving into controversial topics of bioethics. It's clearly written, covers a wide range of topics, and is sure to spark lively conversations.

I've been looking for charts to help me with mileage and training for various races and this one has a ton to choose from. I'm training for my first marathon using his Novice marathon guide and it has been great. Finally, some concrete schedules to use for any distance!

An excellent compendium of training ideas.......1999-07-13

I am quite surprised by the negative reviews of this book. I have found it helpful for training for races ranging in length from 10 to 50 kilometers. Skim it, read it, study it, but at the least you'll never have to buy another series of training charts.

I have purchased many of Hal's books and this is the only one I have ever been disappointed in. Not at all worth owning, the contents of this book is mainly training charts.

Looking at the title and the briefing I expected a lot from this book. I expected recommendations about the tempo, distance to cover, periods to rest, what&when to/not to eat or drink, places to/not to train, what to wear, etc. together with the reasons.

Unfortunately none of my expectations were covered. The book can be defined as a collection of lectures or articles of different gurus. Thus it is targeting the academicians rather than the amateur runners like myself.

An excellent collection of training regimens.......1999-02-02

The title on this one may fool you. I followed Higdon's Chicago Marathon training guide (included in this book) for two marathons and bought the book to get his insight on races of other distances. While I was initially quite disappointed that the training schedules in this tome were mostly not Mr. Higdon's, there is no denying this is a fabulous book. With schedules ranging in difficulty from novice to expert runners, and ranging in distance from the 5K to the Ultramarathon, there's almost too much information for one little book. Prepare to be overwhelmed. If you can't find a training schedule in here, you can't be satisfied. It's one stop shopping for all kinds of runners.

Feedback on the Recordings.......2007-10-10

The readings represent a beautiful overview of cultural information and activities that take place over the range of Spanish-speaking countries. The readings are clear. Of equal importance, the recordings are not cluttered with explanations in English, background noises, and music--just straight reading in Spanish from story to story.
I have one complaint: The back blurb of the book says "you will read and listen to more than 100 articles in Spanish about the enchanting diversity of Latino culture." This blurb dishonestly gives the impression that all articles are recorded on the CD. In reality, of the 117 articles, only 29 are read on the enclosed CD.
It is all right that only a portion of the articles are recorded for readers to listen to, but this should be stated honestly so that customers are not mislead before making their purchase.

Brilliant but could be brillianter.......2007-10-03

Maybe Hundred articles or more about the Spanish speaking countries and cultures, regarding all aspects of life. At a rough guess about every third article is read to you on the CD. Why on earth not all? And a slightly higher charge for that, then, mountain of spoken Spanish experience. The idea is brilliant, with the rarer vocabulary on the side, but why limit themselves to a third of it on CD. I love it But it could have been three times better.

Delightful book and CD. It enhances the learning process, is interesting and fun to read and listed to the CD, and it very much increases ones understanding of hispanic culture and its variability among the Spanish-speaking countries of the world. If you are just a bit past beginning but still less than intermediate, or if you are intermediate or even advanced, I think you will enjoy the book and CD.

Good for increasing vocabulary.......2007-01-12

This book introduces a lot of new vocabulary which is clearly defined in the margins next to each page. I recommend this book if you are trying to improve and expand your vocabulary or if intend to read it every once in a while to break up your normal study habits. However, because of the extensive amount of new vocabulary, it is not leisurely reading. You will not be able to casually read this book while subconsciously assimilating grammar and usage because you are always looking up new words.

Great book!.......2007-08-24

This book can't be out of your office! It's an excelent, faster, complete reference that helps you in your every-day Oracle DBA work, It cover from the basic topics to RAC and high-availability configuration in only 708 pages. Obvious, It's a handbook reference and doesn't give you the complete solution for one problem, but if You had been working for 2 or 3 years as DBA, or if You are and OCA or OCP DBA, the book is a great reference for you.

Forget it - RTFM.......2007-03-13

This book unfortunately does nothing to expand the body of knowledge beyond putting on paper what you can just as easily find in the standard documentation. I'm sorry I put my money down for this when I have the docs just a click away as I type.

I have tried a few times to use this as a reference, but each time it takes me about 3 pages to hit a deadend because of some question or situation that the book fails to address. In each case I have had to figuring it out for myself from the standard documentation/google etc.

The authors consistently fail to deliver the two things I look for in technical books:
(1) provide the insights on "why is it so?" - the explanation, mental models, frameworks that help readers move from just learning syntax to a deeper level of understanding. I want to read and learn from authors who are sufficiently skilled in their field with the powers of introspection and communication, who have put the time and effort to deeply consider a subject before turning their learnings into a book.

(2) supplement the existing body of knowledge with new knowledge or at least a new organisation of knowledge that facilitates learning or understanding.

I have had the same reaction to other titles in the Osborne Oracle Press series; I thought I'd give this a go but now sorry I did. In future there is no place for these books in my shopping cart!

Reference Book!.......2007-01-04

If you are looking to learn Oracle, don't try to do it with this book alone. This book is great for reference, but to try and understand all that is Oracle requires a different book.

Merely regurgitates Oracle's documentation........2006-12-07

This book merely regurgitates the freely available documentation from Oracle. However, this book is even worse since its space limitations means that the author is forced to be even more cryptic than the already difficult to understand product documentation. I could not find anything useful in this book - the book doesn't explain anything. Nothing at all. Aren't books like these supposed to simplify concepts for nonexperts or beginners? Forget about this book. Download the free documentation and use the money to print that out at Kinko's instead.

It is an excellent DBA Handbook.......2005-11-20

The book is excellent in the sense that it went straight to the essential and important topics. I am surprised that they did cover a lot of topic in a few pages. The book does help if you have some experience with oracle and especially with 10g. If you are new to oracle I am pretty sure you pick up the wrong book and you will be shaken by the concepts in the book. Overall I recommend this book if you are already familiar with 10g.
