Rick Kash believes supply-side economics has reached the end of its effectiveness, and in The New Law of Demand and Supply he argues for an inverse approach--one he contends is already employed to some degree by many of the world's most successful companies. Kash, CEO of The Cambridge Group consulting firm, uses some of these organizations--such as Gatorade and Sears Credit--to illustrate the concept of demand strategy he proposes to meet these new-world needs. Based on "thoroughly understanding existing and future demand and only then creating the supply to satisfy it," the approach is fully described in chapters devoted to each of its six phases. "Analyze the demand forces and industry factors impacting your business," for example, is a logically presented first step that calls for a wide focus on external elements like demographics, competitors, societal trends, the economy, legislation, and technology. Next comes "Select your most profitable demand segments," advocating a careful search for areas that match your capabilities but can be differentiated from the offerings of others. Subsequent steps (develop a "demand value proposition" that elevates you above the crowd, identify ways to realize this agenda, allocate necessary resources, and execute) are likewise explained thoroughly. The result is an intriguing platform with planks that are potentially applicable in a multitude of situations. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
A groundbreaking business book for the twenty-first century, The New Law of Demand and Supply overturns the traditional supply-side approach to how business is done, showing why a demand-based approach is essential to success in today’s economy.
For more than two hundred years, companies have based their approach to business on supply-side economics, concentrating on creating products and services and then attempting, through marketing, publicity, distribution and promotion to stimulate a demand for them. While most companies have factored in customer feedback, focus groups, and broad-based market research, their basic approach has remained the same. And it is a mistake. In The New Law of Demand and Supply, Cambridge Group CEO Rick Kash argues that in order to succeed in today’s market, companies must reverse their approach by first determining what current and emerging demand exists and then by creating products and services to meet that demand.
For a host of reasons–from the reduced life cycles of products and services, to deregulation, to increased competition as a result of globalization, to the ability of customers to compare prices and values at a keystroke–the market, Kash argues, has fundamentally and permanently changed from one that is driven by supply to one that is driven by demand. Traditional businesses that remain locked in a supply-side mentality are doomed to failure. Today’s most successful companies, from McDonald’s to IBM, from EMC to Pepsi-Cola, use the principles of demand strategy to first understand all the factors that go into creating demand in their targeted markets, as well as what their emerging needs will be in the future. In the heart of the book, Kash outlines a specific six-step demand strategy on how to implement a demand-first approach–from homing in on who your most profitable customers are to determining what needs they have (whether articulated or not) that are not currently being addressed. Using that information, companies can create unique products that are differentiated from their competitors’ to meet those demands. Rather than being forced to compete on price, they can trump the competition by competing on value, offering the options, features, products, and services that better meet an existing demand. As a result, companies often can actually charge more for what they produce and improve their margins. Diving under the hoods of a score of successful Fortune 500 companies that have made demand strategy central to the way they do business, including Gatorade, Capital One, Sara Lee, and Sears, Kash details how these companies have used this strategy to re-create their businesses.
Ten years ago, Reengineering the Corporation brought about a sea change in the way companies were run. Now, The New Law of Demand and Supply redefines the ground rules of today’s economy and gives managers the tools they need to outperform the competition and achieve dramatic growth and profits.

From the makers of Duh Magazine........2003-06-25
Okay, this should not be revolutionary to anyone. Companies should concentrate on demand and customers? Uh, thanks. Try to differentiate your product to get higher returns. Uh, thanks again. Proper resource allocation is essential. No, really?
Kash makes some good suggestions on how companies should develop, market, research and produce in order to meet demand, instead of concentrating all efforts into the supply side. These suggestions, which are very sound, are just plain common sense. It's not revolutionary in any terms. He develops six principles on which to do this and devotes chapters to it, ranging from researching to resource allocation. I would provide the list here, but then that would mean Kash's book would be entirely useless.
What's more insulting than the "revolutionary" in the title are the complements on the back of the book. Such people as the head of McDonalds, EMC, and Gillete have gave great reviews for this book. Of course, if you read the book, you'll see that Kash has actually praised those executives countless times. If someone wrote a book about me, and praised me - heck, I'd consider it a literary masterpiece.
This book just basically is a list of principles wrapped around tons of success stories and a complete lack of humility. Avoid it.

Revolutionary concept? Forget it........2003-04-30
What a cheat! Get a catchy title for your book so that people are attracted and your book sales increase and then fill it with all the basic knowledge of economics, marketing and what not and call it a revolution. I just wonder what kind of companies get advice from writers like those? If you are slightly familiar with basic (very basic) marketing, economics and strategy, then I can assure you that you will find nothing that you did not know already.
What is this? Create paper castles and tear them down and claim you have developed a revolutionary methodology. Pathethic! The guy attacks all economists by taking Samuelson's introduction to his economics textbook whereby he says that economics is about WHAT to produce, HOW to produce and FOR WHOM to produce. Then, Eureka. Mr Kash suddenly discovers that the sequence is wrong! and that you should not start with the question of WHAT but instead you should start with the question of FOR WHOM. And he calls this a "revolutionary new demand theory since Adam Smith". What a discovery! Nobody ever thought of this before! The disciplines of economics and strategy are grateful to you Mr. Kash!
Dear Mr. Kash, economics is not about Prof. Samelson's introductory chapter to his textbook. There are many more good economists like Samuelson who have already and in a much more refined way elaborated on the concept of demand. Also, there are many very good strategists who not only tackled the issues of demand creation and micro-segmentation but detailed out workable methodologies which are, unlike yours, very usable. See, for example, Adrian Slywotzky's various books, also Don Peppers' 1t01 concept, or for that matter any Strategy 101 or good Marketing 101 book.
This book is just bla bla. No serious scholar can take this piece of scrabbling seriously. So, avoid it an go read something worth spending your time on.
Demand Strategy From Beginning to End.......2003-03-03
Rick Kash's well written book not only walks you through the basics of demand strategy, but gives terrific case studies that show how demand strategy prinicples have been used by many successful companies. Overall this is an excellent book that is easy to read. I highly recommend it.
The New Law of Demand and Supply.......2003-02-02
An interesting as well as informative way of looking at business today. Traditional ways of looking at the supply-side of things will not cut it in the future. If business is to be successful it's leaders will have to devolp and implement the demand strategies described in Rick Kash's book.

Extraordinary.......2003-02-19
Paul Deslauriers has written an extraordinary book that speaks clearly to the energetic exchanges that occur in relationships of all types. Through his sharing he provides clues for readers regarding the exchanges that are being experienced in daily interactions, thus pointing the way toward a cleaner, healthier, less stressful approach. If you are a trainer in an organization or just an individual who wishes to further your understanding of your interactions with others - this is an excellent read.
Extraordinary.......2003-02-14
A mutual friend told me about this book when she was previewing it and it was her enthusiasm and recommendation that led me to purchase the book. I read the first half of the book in the first day (I couldn't put it down!) and then ordered additional copies to share with friends. For anyone who sees the world energetically - who takes in information about their surroundings in this manner - who translates experience by reading and feeling the energy of others and their surroundings - this book is an incredible confirmation. Paul Deslauriers shares - openly - his from his personal experience and talks in plain terms about the energetics of those experiences and how that information plays out in his life. Additionally, there is wonderful organizational information - and I, as a person who has done Organizational Training and Development, felt such a sense of upliftment to read experiences and beliefs which mirror my own in this realm. For me this book underlines that which I have believed to be true about the world, organizations, relationships. Whether you are in an organizational or personal relationship that finds you questioning its essence or parts, or you are ready for a dynamic read, you will love this book. It is a gift to read words that resonate so deeply. B.J.R.

Book Description
We are just beginning to discover the importance of vitamin C in the health of natural and man-made ecosystems. Synthesis of ascorbic acid is well understood, but algae as the only source of ascorbate in the aquatic food pyramid has not been explored. There is an expanding field of the culture of aquatic organisms that demand formulated feeds to best meet their requirements for health, growth, and reproduction. With over 100 species now cultured for human consumption, the question arises as to whether we have reliable information for the dietary needs for vitamin C for even a small percentage of these organisms. A comprehensive approach to the role of vitamin C at the cellular level as well as in the aquatic food chains, this book discusses growth and reproduction, disease resistance, and toxicology of aquatic organisms. Ascorbic Acid in Aquatic Organisms was written as the offshoot of a special session on aquatic organisms and practical aquaculture at the 1998 World Aquaculture Society (WAS) meeting. This book reviews the research already available and identifies new directions for research. It is a unique combination of good nutrition research, ecology, and practical aquaculture (for instance brine shrimp enrichment). This interdisciplinary volume will appeal to marine fish culturists, aquatic biologists, comparative and evolutionary cellular physiologists, and environmental toxicologists.
Book Description
Clear and penetrating presentation of the basic principles of scientific research from the great French physiologist whose contributions in the 19th century included the discovery of vasomotor nerves; nature of curare and other poisons in human body; functions of pancreatic juice in digestion; elucidation of glycogenic function of the liver.

The wonderful world of homeostasis.......2001-02-06
As Bernard puts it: "I think I was the first to urge the belief that animals have really two environments: a milieu extérieur in which the organism is situated, and a milieu intérieur in which the tissue elements live. The living organism does not really exist in the milieu extérieur (the atmosphere it breathes, salt or fresh water if that is the element) but in the liquid milieu intérieur formed by the circulating organic liquid which surrounds and bathes all the tissue elements; this is the lymph or plasma, the liquid part of the blood which, in the higher animals, is diffused through the tissues and forms the ensemble of the intercellular liquids and is the basis of all local nutrition and the common factor of all elementary exchanges. A complex organism should be looked upon as an assemblage of simple organisms which are the anatomical elements that live in the liquid milieu intérieur."
This book is a wonderful book for the biology student or for anyone interested in how medicinal studies and biology "began." Claude Bernard introduces his idea of homeostasis in this book and he explains how and why it works, and how humans, as well as animals, could not live without such an idea.
I recommend reading of this book. It kept me busy for hours and I didn't want to put it down. Five stars for excellence, intelligence, and much much more. Read it for yourself and you be the jugde!

If baseball from a fan's perspective is the answer to a lazy summer day, then Tales from the Dugout is the answer to lazy days the rest of the year. Pick it up and open to any page and you'll find the delightful yarns, quotes, foibles, and folklore that wrap the grand old game like so much twine around the innards of a baseball. Bobby Brown, Yankee third baseman of yore, explains why teammate Yogi Berra had such an unconventional strike zone; an unassuming North Carolina pitcher named Jimmy Hunter reveals the truth behind his nickname, "Catfish"; and major-league prankster Ken Griffey Jr., in a rare turn of the tables, plays the April Fool. With more than 150 anecdotes from America's national pastime, this memorable collection is the perfect antidote to rainouts and winter blues.
Book Description
Batter up--here comes the most memorable collection of anecdotes about the national pastime ever assembled. Tales from the Dugout brings together never-before-told stories from baseball personalities such as Roger Maris, Ken Griffey Jr., Pete Rose, Phil Rizzuto, and Gaylord Perry in this illustrated, one-of-a-kind compendium.

NOT.......2007-09-10
Not the greatest baseball stories, not even good baseball stories. The only funny story about this book is I ordered it twice by accident(by the way I didn't like it either time)
Grand Slam! Amazing Book.......2006-01-09
Tales from the Dugout is a great book. The book has tons of great short stories about the game of baseball. Furthermore, the stories are about former and current players, managers, owners, fans, teams, announcers, and the list could go on. Additionally, the stories range from hilarious to respectful. This makes the book stay exciting throughout its entirety. The variety really adds a lot to the book.
I would really recommend this book if you are a baseball fan or just like a good reading. Tales from the Dugout uses such a great variety of well known people and not well known people. This quality makes sure that you are learning about new people and learning more about players you came to love years ago. Personally, I am devoted baseball fan and love anything about baseball. This book tops all the books I have about baseball. It is truly a great book.
The author, Mike Shannon, displays a great knowledge and understanding of baseball and writing. Shannon writes the stories in a way that pulls you in once you start reading. It is really amazing. When I was reading the book, it felt like I was talking to Shannon in person. Additionally, Shannon picked "The Greatest True Baseball Stories Ever Told." Every single story in Tales from the Dugout leaves with a great last word and makes you want to see what how the next short story will end up.
If you love the game of baseball and like reading about baseball, this book is perfect for you.
If You Like Baseball History, Read This Book.......2004-10-30
This book is about a number of people and things. Some people that it's about are Pete Rose and Ken Griffey Jr. There are broadcasters in the book, one is Joe Nuxhall. There are many other people in the book, too.
Some things that I liked about the book was, there was a collection of short stories. It also had some pictures. There weren't pictures about everything they talked about. If you didn't like one story, it wasn't so bad because the whole book wasn't about that. You could keep going with the book.
Somethings I didn't like was, it had some stories that didn't make sense. Those stories were around five pages long. Other than that I liked the book pretty well.
Could have been much better.......2004-04-02
Shannon's research is great, and his love of the sport comes through, but simply put the stories included aren't anything special. Anyone who has grown up listening to and loving our national pastime has certainly heard many stories much better than the ones here.
Shannon explains that his intent was not to repeat old anecdotes, but to write a book full of new ones. It's a noble goal, but unfortunately it results in a collection of mediocre and mostly uninteresting stories.
Nice Book, But Nothing Revolutionary.......2004-03-22
The easiest way to write a book is to have other people tell the story while you write it down and take credit. This is not meant to discredit the author, Mike Shannon. However, as a lifelong baseball fan, I already heard many of these stories. In many cases, I enjoyed reading these stories from the original source or a witness. Additionally, many of the stories chosen for the book are just not interesting.
If you like the Yankees, you will like the book. There are plenty of Yankee stories in here. If you hate the Yankees, this will make this a less than pleasurable read. I particulary enjoyed reading the Marge Schott stories. The exploits of the late Reds owner are always good for a laugh. Many of the stories seem to be about miserly owners. I particularly enjoyed reading about Bobby Thigpen's attempts at using poetry to get a raise. While many of the stories are informative, they aren't very entertaining. I was hoping to read more "inside the game stories."
To the casual fan or even big baseball fans, many of these stories are old news. I believe that this book is more geared toward younger readers who are learning about the game. This is probably a book most baseball fans can live without.

Useful Reference.......2006-06-20
This book is a very helpful reference. If someone has writer's block, this book will get them moving forward again. It contains many frequently used (and some less frequently used) words and, unlike thesauruses, gives information about words/synonyms so that the most appropriate one can be discovered. The index in the back of the book helps to find the page the word is on. I have quite a few thesaurus-like books and this one I use most often.
It's a Diction-thesaurus-ary! (And more.).......2006-03-19
Look up a word. You will find a list of synonymns. You'll find a definition and correct useage guide for each of the synonyms. And, if the word has antonyms, you'll find those as well. This book is a must for students and writers.
great book for choosing between synonyms.......2001-10-03
No two words are perfect synonyms. They come from different origins; they evoke different emotional images. Professor/Senator Hayakawa provides excellent guidance on how to choose between similar words. I read an earlier version of this book with a different title.
Excellent.......2000-12-05
Best book if you like to know the distinction of the words.
choose the right word.......2000-04-21
This is a very good book on the choice of word when we are writing. I especially found it useful when I am writing on performance appraisal and recommendation for my subordinates. The book explain the meaning of each word among a group of words with similar meaning. You can just pick up the word exactly appropriate to describe a person or situation. I highly recommend this book to you if you also have the problems in choosing the right word while you are writing.

Terrific Horror Novel.......2007-08-09
I've quickly become a Masterton fan. He builds suspense quite well, establishes believable characters, and describes scenes sometimes with brutal effectiveness. I have also become fond of his use of history and mythology to either build upon or create story lines. Devil in Gray is no different. Here he uses the Civil War and the Santeria religion as forces who intersect to create a modern day murder mystery.
It takes no time to become deeply involved in the book, as Masterton introduces us to the theme of the story. A detective, still mourning for his murdered lover, must unravel a series of horrendous murders before others, even himself, becomes a victim. His search takes him from Civil War battle fields to the ancient beliefs and rituals of Santeria. All the while, others are dying in gruesome fashion by a killer who is unseen. It is a fascinating journey, and the tale wraps itself up very nicely, with a satisfying ending. Masterton hasn't disappointed me yet, and I look forward to the next book I choose.
Great Horror with Historical Flavor.......2006-10-21
This was the first book that I've read from author Graham Masterton. I thoroughly enjoyed this book....especially how the author blended the history of the Civil War in the story line. I will definately be reading more of his writings.
Juicy dark tale, I dare ya to read it!.......2006-06-02
Graham Masterton has been my favorite horror writer since I was a teen and every time I read his work it reminds me why that is so. His true gift as a writer is in the creative research he does for each one of his novels for his bad guys and foes are always different and have different cultural history and fairy tales woven for them. Whether it's Japanese demon's, Mayan pyramids and their watchers, huge rats, Sphinx like evil women, dark angels, djiins or Santeria magicians such as in this book, his writing is so realistic and terrifying that I start to believe half of it as true when I get sucked into one of his books.
Graham doesn't shy to open a book with a violent crime in its process and this one is no exception. He makes it perfectly clear that the person you read about in the beginning will die and it gave me Goosebumps finding out how it happened.
Our main character in this story is detective Martin Decker whom we are introduced to while he's in the middle of having an affair with his Captain's wife. He seems like a nice guy but he surely gets around and runs over lots of female hearts before we find out what broke his own heart in the first place. As the story progresses however, Martin doesn't cease to impress and befriend the reader with his brave quest battling the Devil in Gray.
This book deals with African magical religion known as Santeria. Martin's nemesis is the Devil in Gray; an invisible foe who seems to murder random people in the most gruesome and bizarre ways. As martin follows the investigation he finds out more than he bargained for and his own life is turned upside down. Somehow we find out that he directed the Devil's anger on his own life and he needs to go and get allies to help him. The only problem is that the only person who can help hip is a very evil woman, but she is connected to his heart that I mentioned was hurt in the past. Decker is forced to believe that his nightmares are real and they are coming after him and he is not safe in his home, his job and not even his own dreams as the invisible enemy charges closer and closer.
I loved reading the suspenseful struggle and detective work that Martin had to go through in order to decipher the stranger murders before the list stopped at his own name.
The ending of this book was superb, the typical golden trophy of any Masterton book as he is the master of great endings. This will fill you up and leave you satisfied. Even though this book deals with African magic and the Civil War, two odd topics that somehow do come together I had a blast reading it.
Chilling, spell-binding, and uniquely horrific...that's Graham Masterton for you!.......2006-01-02
Decker Martin is a Richmond, VA detective who is slowly reaching the end of his rope. Carrying on affairs with various women (including his captain's wife), routinely looking for a new girlfriend, Martin is trying to forget the death of his beloved girlfriend, Cathy. That's not so easy as of late, especially because he's been having dreams about Cathy...and seeing her apparition in his apartment...
Cathy is warning Decker. The detective has just taken a unique and disturbing case--a killer who appears out of nowhere, brutally muders without being seen, and vanishes just as suddenly. The only eyewitness is a Down's Syndrome girl with a unique psychic gift. But as Decker pursues his invisible killer, he slowly descends into the Richmond subculture, into a fascinating and terrifying religion, and comes to realize that he may be on the killer's hit-list...
For decades, Graham Masterton has been crafting some truly unique horror novels. "The Devil in Gray" is no exception. It is gritty, it is witty, it is terrifying. Decker Martin is definitely an anti-hero prototype...occasionally hilarious, occasaionally unlikeable. The killer--and the deaths--are definitely spine-tingling, and then there is the mystique of the religious subculture you find yourself emersed in. "The Devil In Gray" is one to read late at night, with the lights on. And for you Civil War buffs out there...prepare to have your socks frightened off! The same goes for the rest of you.
Superb Horror; Devilishly Detailed.......2005-10-18
In the last ten years, Masterton's horror work has benefitted from his historical romance fiction. This book is not one for "Civil War Buffs" but is a book for people who like Supernatural Horror with a very detailed historical background.
Masterton's craft at this style of popular fiction is getting better and better. His research skills are as excellent as ever, but it is his presentation of the material that gets better and better.
Masterton's real key is the story weave. He shows fairly extreme ultra-violence, and gradually draws together the threads of occult themes in various forms, and in his usually tantalizing manner, creates a very intriguing tapestry of superb horror, scarey supernatural elements, increasingly witty comments, and historically hysterical moments that always leaves the Masterton fans ( and non fans ) wanting more.

Useful if kept in perspective.......2004-01-31
Casting my personal opinions on the subject matter of this work aside, I can still say this much: "Between Good and Evil" is a book containing several half-truths and unorthedox viewpoints, that may be deceiving to someone who knows little about the topics in question. William Grey has some rather vindictive things to say about several groups, particularly Satanists, and notably Kaos Magicians, that really push the boundaries of honesty. For this reason I advise the reader to be skeptical with this book - look things up, confirm, validate, etc.
Difficult but interesting.......2002-12-14
Grey has a difficult style typical of his time period and texts of the early 20th century. It makes this book very hard to wade through, esp. when added to his repitious style. Still, this gives an alternative understanding of the rite of Abrimalin, and thus of the work of this ritual on the human condition. This also gives insights into the purpose of evocation in a theurgical tradition. Not a book for dabblers or brousers, but for a serious student may be worth the work
