    Book Description

With a fresh take on social dynamics in the antebellum South, Jonathan Daniel Wells contests the popular idea that the Old South was a region of essentially two classes (planters and slaves) until after the Civil War. He argues that, in fact, the region had a burgeoning white middle class--including merchants, doctors, and teachers--that had a profound impact on southern culture, the debate over slavery, and the coming of the Civil War.

Wells shows that the growth of the periodical press after 1820 helped build a cultural bridge between the North and the South, and the emerging southern middle class seized upon northern middle-class ideas about gender roles and reform, politics, and the virtues of modernization. Even as it sought to emulate northern progress, however, the southern middle class never abandoned its attachment to slavery. By the 1850s, Wells argues, the prospect of industrial slavery in the South threatened northern capital and labor, causing sectional relations to shift from cooperative to competitive. Rather than simply pitting a backward, slave-labor, agrarian South against a progressive, free-labor, industrial North, Wells argues that the Civil War reflected a more complex interplay of economic and cultural values.

      Book Description

How did the Eastern United States of the antebellum era make the successful transformation from an agricultural to an industrial economy? Previous studies have identified declining soil fertility and increased competition from the Midwest as incentives for Easterners to abandon farms for factories. But as David R. Meyer points out in this groundbreaking study, agriculture in the East was, in fact, thriving during this time, even as manufacturing began its period of explosive growth.

In The Roots of American Industrialization Meyer reexamines previous studies, provides new evidence, and presents a new explanation. He argues that agriculture and industry both grew and transformed, thus constituting mutually reinforcing processes. Eastern agriculture thrived from 1790 to 1860, and rising farm productivity permitted surplus labor to enter factories and provided swelling food supplies for growing rural and urban populations. Farms that were on poor soil and distant from markets declined, whereas other farms successfully adjusted production as rural and urban markets expanded and as Midwestern agricultural products flowed eastward after 1840. Rural and urban demand for manufactures in the East supported diverse industrial development, and prosperous rural areas and burgeoning cities supplied increasing amounts of capital for investment. Metropolitan regional hinterlands around Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and, to a lesser extent, Baltimore, experienced broadly similar transformations of agriculture and manufacturing, forming the eastern anchor of the American manufacturing belt.

                Book Description

Advances in Industrial and Labor Relations (AILR) continues to receive high quality submitted manuscripts and to publish the best among these, as determined by double blind anonymous refereeing. Volume 13 of AILR contains eight papers dealing, respectively, with European responses to high unemployment rates; the effects of alternative types of staffing arrangements; the adoption and use of alternative dispute resolution procedures in the nonunion workplace; the implications of organizational ombuds arrangements for voice, conflict resolution and fairness at work; building and sustaining labor-management partnerships; union and employer tactics in Ontario, Canada organizing campaigns; the late 20th century campaign for U.S. striker replacement legislation; and the development over a quarter-century of Australian industrial relations thought. It is no accident that the research settings for the papers contained in this volume include North America, Europe and the Pacific Rim. AILR has long encouraged manuscript submissions from researchers worldwide, and seeks to publish articles that expand theoretical and empirical industrial relations knowledge beyond that obtained from U.S. settings and data sources. Taken as a set, the eight papers contained in Volume 13 of AILR clearly reflect achievement of this objective.

Her approach of integrating the 'top down' (brain functions) with the 'bottom up' (cellular mechanism) is very clear and easy to read. Besides, she cited many interesting examples in explaining how the brain gets malfunction. However, it would be much more clear in conveying the message if she can use more graphical representations instead of text description. (In that case I will rate it a FIVE STARS without hesitation!) All in all, it is still a marvelous book to enjoy!

                        Book Description

Fifteen years in the making, this updated edition raises the high standard of Bigelow and Schroeder's 1953 reference by drawing from a much larger base of information. Thirty-eight experts in fisheries biology and ichthyology clearly distill the enormous amount of knowledge gained during the past fifty years, including distribution figures from thirty years of annual trawl surveys; food habits accounts from surveys of the stomach contents of more than 30,000 fishes; and egg distribution data from a survey exceeding 10,000 samples. The contributors update Bigelow & Schroeder's 1953 material while presenting a wealth of new information, including thirty-three additional species accounts. By adding 50 percent more material and focusing the volume on data, the editors address the needs of today's biologists and commercial fishers, and ensure that Bigelow and Schroeder's Fishes of the Gulf of Maine, Third Edition will become the standard work in the field for the next fifty years.

Although written more than 20 years ago, David Robert's Moments of Doubt is still applicable to the many nuances of mountaineering today and the issues that make the headlines.

He doesn't hesitate in sharing his inner most feelings and his opinion of others. His analysis of his own climbing adventures and the mishaps of others to laid bare for the reader to analyze and come to their own conclusions.

If not for the pure enjoyment of adventure reading, Moments of Doubt provides a good resource of popular climbing epics.

Having recently read Robert's On the Ridge Between Life and Death, I found Moments of Doubt to be a more global look at climbing, yet with the passion that Robert's is so adept at sharing with the reader.

This book of essays is one of the finest of its type I have read. They cover a time span from 1968 - 1986, and though most are on mountaineering, one of the best is on white water rafting. Mr. Roberts has divided the book into three sections: Adventures, Profiles and Reflections. I confess I wasn't looking forward to "Reflections." Most climbers are not at their best at "reflecting" on anything. They find it difficult to achieve that fine balance between false modesty and arrogance. Dave Roberts is a happy surprise. He pulls no punches and has a reporter's eye for the absurd. One of the intriguing Reflections, "Boulders and Gunks" compares young climbers in the mid-80's to youngsters of his own era, the late `60's.

In the Adventure section, "Rafting with the BBC" tell us the differences between the actual hair-raising exploit and what you see on the TV-sometimes funny, sometimes maddening. I have read other accounts of sponsorship by the BBC; it must be like finding out your roommate is a strong-minded elephant. "Kilimanjaro: A Third World Adventure" is a perceptive writing of a mountain, not often mentioned by climbers because it is not considered "difficult." Now, to you and me, the thought of climbing Kilimanjaro might be right up there with bull riding, but to climbers, "difficult" is something like K-2. Also, the only way the local government allowed you to climb was with a guide and as part of a group, a somewhat embarrassing outing for a world-class climber.

My favorite Profile "The Mechanical Boy Comes Back," is the story of Hugh Herr, a brilliant, but obsessed 18-year old climber, who with a friend became lost in the New Hampshire mountains and spent three days and three nights in the below zero temperatures. Hugh subsequently lost his leg up to the thigh due to frostbite. His comeback was miraculous. He refused to quit because of his disability and designed various prostheses so he could climb again, which he did with great success. I was so taken with the account, I had to find out what became of Hugh after 1983 when the article was written. Checking out the Internet, I found Hugh is now Dr. Herr, a PhD who is well known in his field and has a business designing prosthetic devices.

This is not just a book for climbing wannabes, or adventure junkies; all the writings stand on their own, are thought provoking and enjoyable.

By chance, I started reading mountaineering literature with this book. I would recommend it to anyone, climber or not. It is the single best book I have found on the subject. Its only rival, in my opinion, is the volume combining Roberts' two memoirs of Alaskan expeditions, "Deborah" and "The Mountain of My Fear."

Roberts' prose is elegant and compact; his essays set an insightful standard to which no other climbing writer has risen. I have read most of them several times, and will read them again. I read other climbing books in the hope that I will find them as powerful as I did this book.

Royal Robbins did not design the book, of course, but he did write the introduction.

I used this book for the CLEP natural sciences exam. This book is a good starting point for your review, but it's not enough. I used this book as the primary resource, followed by the Official Study Guide 17th edition for review of test questions. I also bought Barron's Review Course Series, Let's Review Earth Science book for review. It covers a lot of stuff in more detail. Be prepared for the Biology and Chemistry portions of this test. I studied the CLEP guide I'm reviewing here and found the questions in the back to be pretty good, followed by testing myself with the CLEP Offical study guide and the Barron's book for thumbing through for review areas. I studied for 2 days, maybe 5 hours total and scored a 68 on this test. I hope that helps and good luck if you plan to take this test.

I studied from this book as well as the CLEP General Exam book for 4 weeks and still did not pass the test. Now I must wait 6 mths before retaking this subject, and I am now looking for another book to further educate me material that was in the actual clep test. The information covered in the review book is not sufficient. This guide focuses on some areas that are not covered in the exam. The exam has areas that are not covered in this book. The book has a lot of information, but not enough to sufficiently study for the Natural Science CLEP exam.

This book is designed to assist students in refreshing their memories about science. It gives good test taking tips, and it gave me an idea as to which other books I needed to read. I ended up checking out more books from the library including: biology, chemistry, and geology. My science knowledge was not that strong when I started studying for the test, but I passed the test after studying the subject for 3 months. In short, this book is NOT a quick fix to passing the science clep. I gave it 3 stars because it did point me in the right direction. Good Luck!

This book is a joke. The practice tests include topics not even covered within the book. The illustrations are mediocre and largely irrelevant to the material. Did I mention this book hasn't been revised in years? It states theories that were disregarded years ago. I only wish I could get my money back.

i wouldn't be able to pass by using this book alone. i used the plato computer programs at the navy college, and a book which specifies in all the sciences. when my time was up, i had about 30 blanks. amazingly, i substantially passed w/ a 490. w/ the subject still fresh in my brain, i took the biology clep exam 4 days later, again scoring substantially high w/ a 51. it definitely helps to keep answers blank if you're not sure. i suggest looking at the outlines for both exams and getting your study material from there.

The practice exam was Ok but the text did not help answer the questions that were on the actual exam. I had to buy another book to find out about the more difficult questions. The illustrations were vague and their was minimal preparatory value.

                          2 out of 5 stars Pathetic.......2001-02-18

I passed the test by a decent margin, no thanks to this book. I read through the book several times, took the practice questions and exams, and when I felt I knew the material well enough I took the CLEP. I was startled at how much material there was in the CLEP that was not even touched upon by the book. I was able to answer a handful of questions correctly because of the book, but the rest I had to rely on common sense and what I remember from high school science classes.

If you do get this book anyway (the other people who have reviewed the book seemed to have liked it), make sure you read EVERYTHING -- the practice tests contain material not covered in the rest of the book so every little bit helps. My kid can draw better than the artists who illustrated the book, so just ignore them. I don't remember a single instance where I needed to recall one of the illustrations.

4 out of 5 stars Passed the test utilizing only this book for review.......2000-09-05

As the test is usually 'graded' on a Pass/Fail basis I can be confident giving a thumbs up for the book. Although I was not terribly confident I had passed the test (in fact I was somewhat skeptical) I did ultimately pass the test by a comfortable margin. I did leave approximately 20 to 25% of the questions blank. It is best, if you cannot rule out some of the answers, to leave the answer sheet blank as wrong answers are held against you in the scoring logic.

Note: One other thing that I believe is valuable is to key in on at least the answers you can rule out (I judiciosly mark the test booklet as this is allowed - unlike Dantes tests) thereby giving you a much better chance at 'quessing' the right answer

4 out of 5 stars CLEP exam for the Natural Sciences.......2000-05-18

I found the test taking tips included very helpful. It prepared me very well for the actual exam. The content info. was moderately helpful. I did find the sample exams did not apply to the material covered in the reading section but ultimately this did help cover a broader area of study. There were actually areas on the exam not covered in the study guide as well as areas that were in fact on the exam.

Natural Sciences is an important part of testing out via CLEP. At most schools, Natural Sciences counts as 6 credits towards your degree. This is a very in-depth look at all the parts that make up the test. This study guide also includes flashcards as well as 100 sample questions.

I thought that this was a GREAT study guide. I passed and only studied three weeks. It had over 150 sample test questions.

I have been studying for a variety of CLEP exams, and have bought several study guides. This one has the least content, and offers the least test practice of all the books I have used.
