Book Description
Psychologists have a long tradition of studying human behavior, strengths and weaknesses, biases and limitations. Economists have constructed normative frameworks that capture the most important elements of human decision-making and developed powerful tools to determine individual and strategic choices in a variety of situations. Only recently have their strengths been combined and economic models enriched with key ingredients found in psychological studies. This volume covers four of the most important themes in this interdisciplinary field: feelings, inconsistencies, limitations and biases. Each chapter contributes to a more comprehensive and accurate modelling and description of human behavior. Its four parts cover: the origins, formation, and evolution of beliefs; consistency, commitment, and intertemporal separability of dynamic choices; attention, preference formation, and risk evaluation in limited cognition; and affective behaviour, specifically the role of emotions in decision making.

Book Description
U.S. agriculture is the envy of the world. Although output from U.S. farms is high, there is a growing gap between what is being produced and what could be produced, partly because innovation and production are constrained by a growing maze of environmental regulations. The chapters, authored by leading experts in their fields, focus on the major environmental constraints that limit U.S. food production without necessarily improving environmental quality. Each paper documents a specific issue, discusses the regulatory response, and offers ideas for reform.
U.S. farmland
Are we really running out of prime farmland? Or is this another example of Chicken Little?
Sensitive habitat
How can environmentally sensitive land be preserved? Does it make sense to set aside habitat forever? How can the market process be strengthened?
Urban sprawl and agricultural land
Can controls on agricultural land use prevent urban sprawl? Are there market alternatives to command and control?
Chemicals and agriculture
The use of agricultural chemicals accounts for much of the high growth of output from U.S. farms. Are chemicals that contribute to agricultural productivity harmful to the environment? Have regulations made things better or worse? Can we return to natural farming? At what cost?
Genetically engineered food products
Are genetically modified crops dangerous to human health? Do they harm the environment or do they improve it by reducing pesticide and chemical use? Will more regulations on genetic engineering actually harm the environment?
Taxation
How do taxes affect land use? Are they an effective tool for encouraging prosperity?
Water
What is the role for water markets in agriculture? Can they balance water use with in-stream environmental demands? Why are farmers concerned about water markets?
Endangered species protection
How has the Endangered Species Act affected U.S. farmers and ranchers? Has it worked? How can species-protecting market incentives be introduced?

I can think of virtually no better book for introducing children or biology-impaired adults to the wonders of the machinery of life, from the molecular to the macroevolutionary. Wonderfully written, delightfully illustrated, and sure to engage and educate. A delightful and successful cross between Larry Gonick's classic Cartoon Guides and Cartoon Historys (but less flip) and David Macaulay's many masterful books on the way things work (but more comprehensive). Highly Recommended.
Book Description
The perfect answer for any instructor seeking a more concise, meaninful, and flexible alternative to the standard introductory biology text.

Mandatory learning.......2005-02-03
I agree with the other reviews but take issue with the Amazon reviewer: This book is not for the biology illiterate. Those who love biology will be especially charmed by the way the material is presented here. It will allow those proficient in biology to see different perspectives on familiar concepts. From a pedagogy perspective, there is no better biology text-truth be told: visuals are presented using a number of models so students can understand conceptual nuances. The attractive pictures are inviting and interesting. Text and picutres are united and work together- you don't get blocks of words. It is engaging-not "easy". And often it is darn funny.
Illustrating what we can't see - in a way we won't forget.......2003-01-11
There is a saying: "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear." This student was ready, your book came at an opportune time. I very much appreciate the authors efforts: First, in their gaining knowledge of this material, then taking the time to write in such an understandable fashion and finally making simply and memorable illustrations of - what we can't see in a way that we won't forget. Great job, many thanks - keep books like this coming.
Buy the Book! It's well worth the investment!.......2002-02-02
This book is excellent! If you're a current or future student of biology (especially a beginner, like me), or even a teacher, you will have no trouble understanding the concepts of biology due to the illustrations and explanations. The book's examples reference everyday life so you can instantly apply what you're reading and seeing. The illustrations are colorful and well defined, and the text is light and even a bit humorous. As a future teacher this book will definitely be added to my permanent collection of reference books.
Every bio student and bio teacher NEEDS this book!.......1999-10-26
This is possibly the most incredible biology textbook for the average Joes of the world (and maybe the not-so-average Joes!). "The Way Life Works" clearly and cleverly explains some of the most abstract concepts of biology and brings them to life (no pun intended). I have recommended this book to all of my students, and wish that I could require them to own it! It should be our biology class' primary textbook. I only wish that I had had this textbook as an undergraduate student. Maybe those molecular biology classes wouldn't have been as difficult!
Kudos!
A must for anyone interested in science.......1998-08-28
IF you ever wondered what DNA is all about and do not have the time to read text books on this subject THEN The Way Life Works is for you.
Very highly recommended for all ages.
Book Description
Throughout the ages, animals have played a significant role in human life. But the relationship between animals and humans is often taken for granted. For example, everyone knows that dogs can be trained to sit, stay, and roll over. But could a dog guide a blind man 2,144 miles down the Appalachian Trail--a difficult feat for a sighted person? Could a cat actually defend a sleeping infant from a deadly rattlesnake that is prepared to strike? Could a dolphin really save a person who is drowning at sea? Could a monkey communicate using English?
Defying facts as we know them, these stories detail the intelligence, bravery, and skill of animals. They make us take a second look at creatures who have been viewed as being driven largely by instinct, and they begin to reveal the mysteries of animal intelligence.

Nothing New.......2007-03-09
If you are of a scientific "bent" I would not reccomend this book. I learned very little that I hadn't already picked up by other sources.
Great book for any age.......2000-11-02
I started reading this book and liked it immeadiatly. It has tons of imteresting articles and facts about animals. I do not agree with the age level and think it would nbe more appropiate to say third grade and up. Kids under eight might enjoy it as a read alould however, but I wouldn't buy it for someone under six. All in all it's a great read for animal lovers.
Book Description
Contrary to popular myth, the original purpose of dim mak was not the training of assassins. It was an intensive study of the medical arts that incorporated the martial arts, and its ultimate goal was to heal, not to destroy. True to the intent of the ancient Chinese masters, here is an undiluted, holistic study of dim mak as both a martial and a healing art. Included are a historical overview of dim mak and Traditional Chinese Medicine, discussions of the physiological mechanism and medical risks of acupoint strikes, an indepth introduction to the classical 36 Chamber training program traditionally used to teach dim mak; detailed analyses of the medical and martial applications of each of the acupoints on the 12 main meridians, complete with detailed diagrams outlining each meridian system and its acupoint locations; and an introduction to herbal pharmacology, which was an integral part of traditional dim mak training. Appendices serve as quick reference guides to the activation method and results of selected point strikes. For academic study only.

Very Informative.......2007-08-21
Wonderful book that delivers more usefull information than any other I've seen. Terrific illustrations throughout to make learning easy. Outstanding!
Good insight into real Martial Art.......2006-06-22
The book of Walker and Bauer is a welcome futher information besides the works of Erle Montaigue. The authors have deep insights into the art of acupuncture. For this reason it was easier for them to go into the secrets of DIM Mac. Nevertheless without medical knowledge it remains difficult to understand all details of this theme. There are some mistakes in the book, but it not so important. For example the paintings and the text of the bladder meridian use different systems. Therefore some acupuncture points do not correspond between figures and text. A lot of fighting combinations in Dim Mac remain hypotheses, because a scintific analysis is not possible or mandatory. Such combinations may result in damage of individual health, experiments have to be forbidden. Nevertheless this book is an exellent work of ancient chinese martial art.

Only minor disappointments...Overall good book.......2006-02-16
The Book delivers almost exactly what it promises ,so I will not mention its good points .One thing I didnt like much was the lack of clear photos for the points ,inside the chambers section of the book .Although you get a rough idea on where each point is ,I had to use my older bibliography in order to pinpoint the exact location of most points .
Also I find unacceptable that the authors did not give extensive information on Governing Vessel and Conception Vessel .Although they mention the points at the last section of the book where they present a sum of combinations and points ,there is no analysis of GV and CV .That was a disappointment .
Superlative!.......2004-11-24
I am proud to call Rick Bauer a friend and his prescence in my martial art life has always been positive, informative and influential. His long tireless work to bring this superlative book to fruition, on a deeply intricate and little known art, Dim Mak, is commendable. This collaborative effort with Master Flane Walker has long been needed and I am now able to clearly state that this is the book the internal martial arts community has been missing.
The subject matter, contents and layout of this work have been given keen attention which benefits the overall aesthetic. It is both easy on the readers eye and informative without alienating the layman. It does not play down the depth of these arts for those who frequent it's heights but rather strikes a perfect balance which comfortably caters to all; no mean feat!
In refering to my University manuals on Chinese Accupuncture Point Locations, I made a comparison with this book which did not leave me wanting. My University manuals were a largely dry affair which
catered to the medical TCM fraternity while the Book of Dim Mak covers all bases and then some. Among some of the most delightful aspects of the book is the martial applications of the points as an adjunct to the medical; very important in my view.
The subject of Dim Mak has been given lavish treatment in a most concise fashion, would it were that all books were so accessable when dealing with obscure subjects such as these. I have already found this to be the number one go-to book when requiring detailed information on Dim Mak, and while Erle Montaigue has had his own excellent works out for some years now, I can safely say that this work is an important addition to the study.
I couldn't recommend this work more highly for those with a vested interest in truly understanding the intracies of Dim Mak from tip to toe.
The best book I have every seen on Dim-Mak!.......2004-08-25
This book is a must have for all Martial Artist or anyone wanting to study and learn more about Traditional Chinese Medicine and the points used for both Acupunture and Presure Point Control or Striking.

The best teaching book I own........2000-07-24
This book gives hundreds of doable methods of interacting with students during a lesson. One of my favorites is called "speak-write". With this method the teacher reads or speaks a small amount of information. Then the speaker is silent for about a minute. Next, students write down anything they remember. A poster will help them jog their memory. The poster is a simple list: 1 summary 2 questions 3 reactions 4 anything else. This gets the students actively involved. It is also a precursor to teaching students how to take notes. Some middle-school teachers get angry when students are writing while they talk. I have the students' rapt attention while I speak. Then when I am quiet students get to interact with the knowledge. Such a simple idea. There are probably hundreds of common-sense ideas like this in Harmin's book. A real boon for NBPTS candidates.
Teaching made simple!.......1998-08-22
In brief form, Merrill Harmin's book provides a plethera of great teaching strategies that revolve around a common philosophy of DESCA (Dignity, Energy, Self-Managing, Community, Awareness). This is a MUST read for all educators. It is as inspiring as it is helpful.
Book Description
Fed up with an outlaw existence, Calico Jack Rackam swears off the pirate life, until he meets Anne Bonny, a woman who would as soon stab a man as give him a good tumble--that is, unless he's a pirate. Soon Jack finds himself out on the high seas, with Anne by his side and his men spoiling for action.
Customer Reviews:
Mary and Anne would be proud.......2007-07-11
I think that James L. Nelson did a really well job. I realize how hard it is to write about people that so little is known about.
It is a fairly long book, but once you get into it, you'll fall in love with the words and characters. It gave such an insight into the female women's minds, as well as calico jack rackman.
Read it, just read it
If you like Pirates..........2006-07-19
The best pirate novel I have ever read. It is gritty, down to earth - a bit raunchy - but life as it really was for Pirates.
This is the real thing....
The only thing I liked was the cover........2006-02-26
The only thing I really liked about this book was the cover. I found it interesting (from another review) that this is actually an older book redone under the true author's name (Formally it was under a fake, female name.). The description and the cover promise more than what is delivered in this novel.
Slow pace.......2006-02-26
I felt the dialouge was ordinary and the pace was sluggish in this novel. He uses 3 points of view and I didn't think there was much difference between them yet they should be 3 distinct "voices." I agree with the other review about his book, "The Sweet Trade" written much earlier. Nelson wrote that book under a psuedonym trying to make it sound like it was a written by a woman as he put it under a woman's name. Then he basically took the book, "The Sweet Trade," and repackaged it under his name and this title. The main "voice" definitely sounds like it is written by a man. Anne and Mary's points of view do not convince me that they are women. They "sound" like men trying to relate and talk like women do. So, I don't think the author succeeded with Anne and Mary which was disappointing.
Women can be heros too.......2005-09-08
I have found every book I have read by James Nelson to be a first rate read and not only very enjoyable but also very interesting. The use of real bursts of history to recreate in fictional form the life and times of the main characters I find to be a most useful way to understand the subject matter and period.
I found the description of the emotional unravelling of Jack Calico to be the most compelling and poignant understanding of the effects depression that I have read lately.
Anne Bonny and Mary Read stand out as the equal to any of the swashbuckling heros that one could ever want.
