This comprehensive overview of Social Security's past and future places an enormous amount of technical information into a format ordinary readers can understand. Although a few parts are tough going, an abundance of tables and figures are a big help. The authors chronicle the development of Social Security from its origins as an FDR project in the 1930s to its current position as an enormously popular program in deep trouble. Indeed, without significant reform, say the authors, Social Security won't be around for the baby boom generation. Politicians are partly to blame, and the public has been duped: "The myth that people are only getting what they paid for has stuck in the public mind; the practical arithmetic proving that they have gotten enormous unwarranted benefits to the tune of $11.4 trillion has been easily brushed aside." The authors show, for example, that Ida May Fuller, the first retiree ever to receive Social Security benefits, paid a grand total of $24.75 into the system. Her first monthly check, however, was for $22.54, and she collected nearly $30,000 in benefits during her retirement. The problem today, of course, is that fewer workers are supporting more retirees--a pay-as-you-go system that Schieber and Shoven argue is unsustainable. They review a series of current reform proposals and then advance their own: mandatory private savings accounts for workers. These could be invested in the stock market or elsewhere, but couldn't be touched until retirement. --John J. Miller

Book Description

How can we be sure that Social Security will meet the claims of retired and disabled Americans in the future? This book analyzes the history of Social Security reform, then proposes mandatory private retirement savings accounts for workers. Such a plan would lighten retirement security burdens for future generations, avoid tax increases, and preserve the system`s progressivity, the authors argue.

4 out of 5 stars Don't bother me with the facts - I'm into fantasy..........2005-03-08

The authors do an excellent job of presenting the historical and demographic facts behind Social Security.

Social Security is an intergenerational welfare program.

Money is taken from working people, and given to retirees.

There is no "trust fund" - no magic pile of money somewhere to fund your retirement.
Any excess Social Security taxes have been spent by the government for something else.

The generational wave (aka "baby boomers") will be retiring soon.

That means there will be a lot more retirees - and a lot fewer working people to pay Social Security taxes.

There will not be enough Social Security taxes coming in to pay
retirees.

We have three options:

Reduce payments to retirees.
Increase taxes on workers.
Borrow the money from somewhere.

Anyone who reads this book, and doesn't believe Social Security is in crisis, is not interested in facts - they are just looking for "a good fantasy".

1 out of 5 stars More of the Same.......2004-01-17

This book presents a history of Social Security, some of which is useful but readily available elsewhere. As for its conclusions and predictions, they are available elsewhere also. They are nothing more the conventional wisdom.

That is to say, this work is a litany of dire assertions that are pervasive in the media, disturbing--and entirely mistaken. Such assertions are conditioned more by political ideology than by economic fact. The economy of the United States is entirely able to maintain a system of comprehensive social insurance; all that is required is the political will to do so.

In calling for privatization, the authors ignore that the US at one time DID have a completely private system. The failure of that system is why we have Social Security. Before accepting the rosy scenario of private accounts, one should ask about inflation protection, spousal benefits, Medicare, Disability benefits, and Survivors' benefits--most, if not all, of which would disappear without a public system.

The former employees of Enron are far better equipped than these authors to comment regarding the comparative guarantees of safety offered by private accounts vs. Social Security.

5 out of 5 stars If You Really Want to Understand the Issues ..........2001-06-16

Read "The Real Deal: The History and Future of Social Security" if you really want to understand the issues surrounding Social Security and what is at stake for our country. The media and political establishment nowhere present the "Real Deal" about what is wrong with Social Security. Only by learning its history (did you know that Social Security initially was intended by FDR to be a funded system?) can one really understand how we got to where we are now.

Be informed - read "The Real Deal: The History and Future of Social Security" by Schieber and Shoven.

1 out of 5 stars Should be titled Social Insecurity!.......2001-02-03

I'd suggest that before anyone concludes that this is the final word on Social Security, they ought to consider another book.. "Social Security: The Phony Crisis". Clearly the authors of "The Real Deal" don't get the math or the purpose of this vital program. This is simply another ploy by the political right to justify their long pursued goal of privatization, a raw deal for working families. They should be ashamed. I'm sure they'd sing another tune if they or someone they loved relied on Social Security for disability or retirement benefits. The real deal is the millions of near retirees who have lived paycheck to paycheck, have no employer sponsored retirement plan, or savings; and are counting on so-called "compassionate conservatives" to give a dam about them. The philosophy of the well fed right wing will leave our children to face the nightmare of raising their own families, planning for their retirement, and supporting the baby boom. This book? A total waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars You Must Buy This Book!.......1999-10-03

Syl Schieber does it again! I've heard Dr. Schieber's fascinating presentations many times over the years, and this book provides further details to bolster his and Shoven's arguments. The bottom line is this: America is woefully unprepared for the demographic tsunami that looms in the next century, when 70-million-plus Baby Boomers hit old age. Without taking the modest and requisite steps that Schieber and Shoven recommend in their book, our country is likely suffer massive and unnecessary social dislocation. This is a must-read. I bought two copies myself.

          Book Description

Through generations of innovation and experiment, smallholder farmers have nurtured a rich diversity of plants and animals, both wild and domesticated. This publication is based on the fieldwork of the United Nations University Project on People, Land Management and Environmental Change (PLEC), a project that studies how farmers use their knowledge and expertise to efficiently manage biodiversity and environmental resources. It highlights smallholder farmers' positive experiences and draws lessons in support of agrobiodiversity.

1 out of 5 stars The confusing world of biological science gets more confusin.......2003-04-27

Now, granted that I did not experience the world of biological science writing before "the McMillan book", but by all that's ecological, people find this book HELPFUL? The academic world must have been a whole lot more chaotic than I can imagine before McMillan wrote her book, because damn, I can't imagine a more confusing text that is supposed to help students. Sure, McMillan provides examples of how to cite and write (to name a few examples) a research paper, but every time I'm looking for a specific bit of information I can't find what I'm looking for! I'm pretty careful about throwing around the phrase "I hate", but every time I look at this book I can feel the rage and frustration rise inside of me. Helpful. SURE it is.

Used it for scientific research papers in college. Great reference, easy to understand, plenty of examples.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to writing as a biologist.......2000-05-23

Our biology department adopted this book as the writing guide for our biology majors a couple of years ago. It includes information about how to seek for and use biological literature, how to present data (including graphs and figures) in the context of scientific writing, and it has a great section on writing research papers. There are ample examples in the book that students can use as models.

The author presents information on framing the paper, and how to use drafts in order to produce a good product. There is also a section that addresses other kinds of writing skills used by biologists -- oral presentations, poster development, writing research proposals, and letters of application.

We encourage students to use this book in all of their courses. It is a required support text for Principles of Biology I and II, and for our junior level Orientation to Research course.

I appreciate the fact that the book is spiral bound. That makes it possible for you to have the book open by other things you are working on without it flipping shut all the time, like it would if it had a regular binding.

This book with less than 200 pp. works well for us and our students. I think it could work well for you, too.

          4 out of 5 stars Highly Useful.......1998-08-05

Both college students and professors will find this book very useful as a beginning guide to preparing written and oral reports. Every biology student should own this informative, easy-to-use book.

Each entry in the Smithsonian Handbook of Reptiles and Amphibians is accompanied by a map showing the geographical distribution of the species while the text and color--coded bands give the internationally accepted scientific name and provide at--a--glance information on size, diet, habitat, reproduction, and population status. A concise glossary explains all technical and scientific terms used in the book.

                            5 out of 5 stars a useful book.......2002-06-13

I've the same book but a french one, it is the most useful book a reptiles' lover must have. It is simple to read, to understand. There's a good introduction to reptiles classifications (which is not obvious for begginers), the "identity card" for each animal is well conceived.
A good book to bring for travelling.

5 out of 5 stars One great book........2001-01-21

Like all the books in this series "Reptiles and Amphibians" gives a species by species look at a huge variety of creatures. From Chameleons to Cobras this book has a great selection. There are not many field guides out there with such fantastic and detailed photos so I suggest it for anyone who loves the to some "unlovable" slimy or scaly creatures of our world.

I've been skiing for a long time, so I don't need this book, but I think it's great for new skiers. I've given it to a couple of beginners and people who said they wanted to try skiing. It covers all the basics--clearly and succinctly--but it doesn't overload new skiers with more information than they need.

The book was too simple for my tastes. I have been skiing for about a year and most of the information was way below my "beginner" level. There is really very very little information on actual skiing. The book basically covers the snow plow and simple turns as related to your ski lessons. There were some interesting tidbits in the book but on the whole I found it very lacking. If you have never ever been skiing and know absolutely nothing about it then the book might be helpful....but if you have skiied once in your life I don't think it will be that much more helpful.

5 out of 5 stars VERY NICE BOOK FOR VERY BEGINNERS.......1998-04-24

Excellent book for someone who has never skied and is not used to snow activities.

All the basics are in there, not aiming to replace a real ski class. The author fully achieved the goal proposed.

This book is pretty good, but did not have as many recipes along the lines I was looking for. Also, the recipes did not have as many along the lines of organic and natural as I would have liked. But all in all, great start in making your own creations.

5 out of 5 stars very good book.......2007-01-28

very easy recipes for making your own beauty products. I loved the soap recipes, but you do need to start with a basic soap and shred it and remold, so you're really just "adding" to a soap that's already been made. Very basic, fun recipes, great for kids! I am a huge olive oil fan, and I really enjoyed making some wonderful olive-oil products.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, fun recipes.......2004-09-01

I've bought a number of natural beauty books, and this is one that I use again and again. The recipes are simple enough to put together in 10 minutes, which is very important to me--I know it's lazy, but if a recipe takes too much prep work, I usually won't fit it into my schedule. Another thing I like is that the recipes are in small batches; I can try them out without wasting a lot of expensive ingredients if I decide I don't like the recipe (and because they're natural, they're less likely to do natural things like grow mold or go rancid before I'm done using them). I've had no problem finding all of the ingredients on the web--it would be hard to shop for them in a grocery store. The author gives you enough guidance to start as a beginner, with lots of encouragement to try out your own adaptations.

2 out of 5 stars Nice for beginners, but..........2002-03-22

The recipes are okay if you're just starting out, but her creams tend to be high on oil and low on water. I find that the proportions in her cream recipes don't work very well for my skin (but they could very well work for yours. Everyone's different). For this reason, I didn't rate the book very highly. There is nothing here that you wouldn't find in other more comprehensive books (e.g. Earthly Bodies, Heavenly Hair by Dina Falconi). I was also mystified by Ms. Byers statement that facial steaming was bad for everyone (or something to that effect). It has certainly been wonderful for my skin, although obviously, it is not something I would do everyday. I've also read in Beauty magazines that many supermodels steam their faces regularly. For the amount of money I paid for this book, I felt I didn't get very much.

                            4 out of 5 stars A wonderful recipe book, but . . ........2002-01-18

. . . (and there is always a but), it is not for those whose ambitious beginnings fall to ruin at the thought of working towards their hobby goals. This book contains marvelous recipes, but one must want to make them quite a lot to search out a good portion of the ingredients. Perhaps my experience is singular, but my well-stocked natural food store had never seen witch hazel that was bottled pure and without accoutrements such as aloe. Other obstacles were present as I tried to gather necessary ingredients, and so my interest slowly waned. The book is, however, well written, concise, and with all the information needed to use it arranged neatly for easy reference. This woman knows her stuff. In the back of the book can be found a few reputable companies from which to mail-order your products if they are not readily available. Once again, this takes patience. One more word of caution: the book contains very few "food" recipes; that is, no "avacado and banana masks" or "pancake batter miracles." It is a book of traditional herbal extract or fresh herb recipes. I say this simply to make sure you buy the home beauty book you desire. So, in conclusion, if you are willing to work a bit more to have your homemade radiance and NOT eat it too, this is the book for you.

On New Years Day 1870, ten-year-old Adolph Korn was kidnapped by Plains Indians. For three years, he thrived on their rough, nomadic existence, becoming a fierce warrior. Never readjusting to white society, he spent his last years in a cave, all but forgotten by his family. That is, until Scott Zesch stumbled over his great-great-great uncles grave. Determined to understand how a timid farm boy could have become so Indianized, Zesch traveled across the west, digging through archives, speaking with Comanche elders, and tracking eight other child captives with hauntingly similar experiences.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding balanced heartfelt story worth 10 stars!.......2007-07-29

I agree with the other reviewers that this book was a pleasant surprise. Moreso, I believe this book should be nominated for a Pulitzer and a Nobel - and I am certain this will become a blockbuster movie!

Hey, take a gander and read my other 100-plus reviews. For me, Bill Anderson, to be uttering such rave exclamations about a historical account, this must be a treasure! It is. Mr. Scott Zesch has provided a book that really gets into the souls of the abducted children and their captors. He somehow does so with balance and sensitivity and refrains from cliches.

I listened to the audio version twice (bought through audible.com, back-to-back, on my iPOD while driving between job sites in Egypt. The first hearing was problematic due to traffic conditions here.

Hey, dodging microbuses and women drivers here is a bit similar to evading arrows and bullets in the old west! Anyhow, I wanted to listen again so I could commit to my soul my new realization of something I think so many researchers have failed to grasp.

Stockholm Syndrome is perhaps only part of the issue. Just as stem cells seem to adopt the particulars of their surroundings, and just as many wild critters can be raised by other species (and occasionally will suffer a confusion as to their own species), so, too, do human beings adopt those existences (sorry for a bad choice of words here) and become as their custodians, captors, siblings or peers. I realize this seems a bit, "duh, no kidding" but the import goes beyond the obvious. Further, it would seem, that any particular species is apt to more fundamentally accept, or accomodate, that which is least hampered or complicated by rules or regulations. In other words, transitioning toward simplicity is more pleasant than is adjusting to more and more complex organizations or societies.

Precisely such a lesson may be of fundamental importance when establishing any system or organization. Perhaps too much regulation or too complex the controlling body makes routine operation (especially at the commencement) will lead to seeming chaos, disorder and thence lead to revolt and to eventual failure or destruction.

And, too abrupt a change before communication to and fro could shortcut any hopes or dreams of adjustment or transition from the simple state towards the complex state.

Although these observations result from a book about Indian captives, the observations, I submit, apply as well to Iraq, Egypt, (or politics in general) but, more important, to formations of clubs, associations and corporations.

General Motors and Ford seem now to be suffering, partly, from the complexities they created while transitioning from the Great Depression through the New Deal and into the Great Society. all the while, upstart, less complex carmakers in Japan challenged from a simpler standpoint using a simpler vehicle.

And, now that Toyota et al have evolved, they may well be in danger from Hyundai and others.

Anyway, back to Captured. This is probably the best book ever authored about life among Native Americans as lived by children taken by force but who adopted the lifestyle out of love for those with whom they lived. I experienced tears of empathy in listening to Scott's discussion of visiting the cave of his distant uncle or when hearing of the reunion one 'white Indian describe his memory of the demise of his adopted 'brother' brutally massacred by a Texas Ranger.

That, alone, is a significant achievement by Scott Zesch - Bill Anderson.

5 out of 5 stars A colorful Texas Hill Country history.......2007-06-22

Texas Hill Country author Scott Zesch began writing "The Captured" after finding the lonely grave of one of his reclusive and little-known relatives. His great-great-great-Uncle Adolph Korn had been kidnapped as a youth by Indians, but Zesch knew little of the details surrounding this incident. His search for answers would prove to be truly enlightening.

It was not uncommon for Indians to integrate child captives into the tribe, and Adolph spent a number of years with the Comanches living his life as a full member of the Indian community. Eventually he was released and returned to his family, although his return to white society was anything but smooth. Adolph was never able to re-adapt to civilization and he ended up living in a cave in the Texas Hill Country, a willing recluse and outcast from the environment that he had been born into.

Zesch not only chronicles his ancestor's life, but also the lives of several other Indian abductees, all of whom had strikingly similar experiences.

The book is an amazing piece of work on several levels. Author Zesch does a tremendous job of researching his work, and his source material is first-rate. The book has excellent pictures that help to add depth and reinforce the stories told between the pages.

Be aware that there are some very graphic battle and abduction scenes depicted in the book. These are definitely not for the squeamish.

Overall, this is a wonderful Texas Hill Country history that will keep you entertained for hours. Zesch is careful to treat all of his subjects with humanity. He is neither an Indian apologist nor does he demonize them. He simply states the facts as told to him by his sources and then lets the reader come to their own conclusions and judgements about the events at hand.

Highly recommeneded for anyone interested in Texana or Hill Country history.

Zesch's wonderful book manages to entertain & inform with equal excellence. For a history book I found it suprisingly heartbreaking.

This is a great read. I like the way the author opens up and tells his story along with the captives. He includes pictures (which is always nice). If you are interested in Native American history and/or Texas History you will like this book.

5 out of 5 stars An unabridged examination of what it was like to be kidnapped and raised by Indians.......2005-12-08

The Captured: A True Story Of Abduction By Indians On The Texas Frontier is an unabridged examination of what it was like to be kidnapped and raised by Indians, written with a historian's exactitude rather than a novelist's fancy panache. When author Scott Zesch stumbled across the grave of his great-great-great-uncle Adolph Korn, Zesch wondered about Korn's life story. Abducted by Comanche Indians at ten, Korn was raised as a Comanche and became one of the tribe's fiercest warriors. Returned to his family by force at age thirteen, Korn never adjusted to white society life and spent his final years living in a cave. How could an ordinary boy have become Indianized so completely? Zesch searched for the answer throughout the West, in archives, in dialogues with Comanche elders, and in the history recorded of eight other child captives from the region, each with similar experiences. The Captured is a most welcome addition to Native American studies for its serious nonfiction treatment of true stories that have been all too frequently fictionalized for public entertainment.
