    Book Description

After World War II a select number of countries outside Japan and the West--those that Alice Amsden calls "the rest"--gained market share in modern industries and altered global competition. By 2000, a great divide had developed within "the rest", the lines drawn according to prewar manufacturing experience and equality in income distribution. China, India, Korea and Taiwan had built their own national manufacturing enterprises that were investing heavily in RandD. Their developmental states had transformed themselves into champions of science and technology. By contrast, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico had experienced a wave of acquisitions and mergers that left even more of their leading enterprises controlled by multinational firms. The developmental states of Mexico and Turkey had become hand-tied by membership in NAFTA and the European Union. Which model of late industrialization will prevail, the "independent" or the "integrationist," is a question that challenges the twenty-first century.

          Book Description

`The authors bring a spark of vitality and life to an area that could be cynically viewed as a series of conflicting fads and fashions....I would recommend anyone in the process of reviewing or designing an entrepreneurship development course to consider the benefits that this book would bring to the teaching process' - Entrepreneurship and Innovation

`Using fiction in the classroom as an approach to stimulating the study of people in organizations is well-established. What this book contributes is a way of exploring some of the existential elements of life in organizations, which are typically difficult to study. It will be on my reading lists. Hopefully, this example, and regrettably few others which exist, will contribute in the long term to the reformulation of how the lived experience of organizational life may be explored in the classroom' - Leadership & Organization Development Journal

Based on courses taught by the authors over many years, this innovative text is a lively and accessible analysis of people at work and the problems they have to confront. The student is introduced to a range of key themes in management such as: power and identity; consumption and bureaucracy; rational choice and meaning all through the medium of characters and situations in contemporary literature.

The clear theoretical framework, supported by footnotes, summaries and further reading guides, makes this an introduction to management the student will find useful as well as enjoyable.

            Book Description

Farmers, Gene Banks and Crop Breeding: Economic Analyses of Diversity in Wheat, Maize, and Rice responds to concerns about the loss of valuable genetic resources and crop vulnerability arising from widespread cultivation of genetically uniform varieties. It assembles a series of applied studies focusing on the fundamental economic issues related to genetic diversity in crop species, with special reference to developing countries. By presenting the results of initial economic investigations of diversity in the world's three major food crops (wheat, maize, and rice),this volume furthers the understanding of the economic context in which crop breeders make use of genetic resources and their diversity.
Farmers, Gene Banks and Crop Breeding: Economic Analyses of Diversity in Wheat, Maize, and Rice responds to current concerns about the loss of valuable genetic resources and crop vulnerability arising from the widespread cultivation of genetically uniform varieties. Previous work by economists in the study of biodiversity has been largely theoretical and has emphasized species diversity. In contrast, this book offers concrete steps in methods and conceptual development, providing an annotated catalog of the tools used to measure and value genetic diversity.
The book will appeal to international agricultural research institutions, to international development organizations and NGOs, and to students and professors in departments of agricultural and resource economics who are concerned with the problem of biodiversity.

              Book Description

All living things are remarkably complex, yet their DNA is unstable, undergoing countless random mutations over generations. Despite this instability, most animals do not grow two heads or die, plants continue to thrive, and bacteria continue to divide. Robustness and Evolvability in Living Systems tackles this perplexing paradox. The book explores why genetic changes do not cause organisms to fail catastrophically and how evolution shapes organisms' robustness. Andreas Wagner looks at this problem from the ground up, starting with the alphabet of DNA, the genetic code, RNA, and protein molecules, moving on to genetic networks and embryonic development, and working his way up to whole organisms. He then develops an evolutionary explanation for robustness.

Wagner shows how evolution by natural selection preferentially finds and favors robust solutions to the problems organisms face in surviving and reproducing. Such robustness, he argues, also enhances the potential for future evolutionary innovation. Wagner also argues that robustness has less to do with organisms having plenty of spare parts (the redundancy theory that has been popular) and more to do with the reality that mutations can change organisms in ways that do not substantively affect their fitness.

Unparalleled in its field, this book offers the most detailed analysis available of all facets of robustness within organisms. It will appeal not only to biologists but also to engineers interested in the design of robust systems and to social scientists concerned with robustness in human communities and populations.

              Book Description

There's an elephant in the room that everyone knows about but no one is acknowledging. The elephant is implicit and undiscussable and lurks in every organization. Everyone talks around the elephant and thinks that everyone else knows about the elephant. But, until the elephant's presence is made explicit, the level of dialogue and therefore the quality of decision-making is limited. Sound familiar?

Using NASA's tragic accidents and Enron's bankruptcy as examples of the price of not having open, constructive dialogue, the book shows how great companies create an environment that encourages and listens to input from all levels of the organization.

After reading this book, you'll understand: The role of assumptions and multiple realities; why surfacing assumptions is so important; how to have constructive dialogue; why arrogance, hubris and smart talk gets in the way of constructive dialogue; and what strategies you can use to name the elephants in your organization.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A helpful book on organizational truth-telling.......2007-09-22

This is an excellent book about truth-telling in organizations. We've all heard the line about the elephant in the room that everybody sees, but no one talks about. This wonderful little book is filled with guidelines and suggestions for how to overcome organizational resistance to telling it like it is.

The centerpiece of the book is a case study of the NASA Challenger disaster (that's the shuttle that disintegrated over Texas on its re-entry because of a piece of foam that broke off and damaged a wing during take-off). It's a rather chilling story that highlights the stark contrast between NASA's espoused theories of truth-telling and "Safety First" on the one hand, and its culture of not making waves or challenging and embarrassing senior executives, on the other.

The book includes extensive discussion of how and why these "invisible" elephants grow up and thrive inside organizations. More importantly, however, it contains simple, straightforward advice on what to do - how to "name" and then discuss the elephants and their implications.

I particularly liked this brief summary of the core message, on page 32:

"Naming elephants is a three-part process. First, identify what is undiscussable, or name the elephant. Second, surface the underlying assumptions people have about the elephant of the situation. This creates the opportunity to view all the ways people see the reality of the situation (multiple realities). Third, learn how to have constructive dialogue involving Tops, Middles, and Bottoms."

Easier said than done, I know. But if you read this little book cover to cover, you'll be a whole lot better at doing what has to be done. And both you and your organization will be a whole lot more successful.

If you are looking for other books on this topic, I also recommend "The Secret Life of the Corporate Jester: A Fresh Perspective on Organizational Leadership, Culture and Behavior," by David Riveness.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent synopsis of the 'why' of intervention.......2007-08-28

Neo-classical economics traditionally equates a successful or effective organisation with one that is profitable. There are some caveats around this view - can the organisation continue to be profitable over the long term, does its level of profit compare favourably with other similar organisations, and what about those many non-profit organisations where effectiveness is measured by an outcome or public good framework, rather than the bottom line?

If you suspect your organisation may not be as effective as it could be, there may be good cause to intervene in the organisations strategy system to intentionally cultivate more organisational effectiveness, and raise undiscussables. Naming Elephants provides an excellent source and synopsis of why and how anyone who has a stake in the success of the organisation could undertake this intervention, hopefully without being labelled a whistle blower, or suffering from punitive action.

The authors cover a lot of ground, using their own management consultancy experience and the lessons learnt from the reports into the Columbia and Challenger disasters. I especially liked the applicability to my own workplace, of the removal of the normalisation of deviance, the promotion of inclusive dialogue through minimising the 'Smart Talk Trap' and abstract thinking, and that environmental scanning is best done by all.

Great value - Naming Elephants has gone into my workplace Library.

5 out of 5 stars Better than thin book on appreciative inquiry if you can believe it.......2006-10-24

I love this book! Simple and powerful and ever so relevant. This is a must read for anyone involved in organizational or community change. You can create healing and remove the hidden agenda's that prevent you from moving ahead. Clear and powerful work with outstanding examples. A must read.

5 out of 5 stars Eating the elephant in the room one bite at a time........2006-03-26

This is a super little book that will have a huge impact on you and your organization! By following the simple steps outlined in this book you will be able to discuss the undiscussables, identify the unidentifyable, and make progress collectively like you never dreamed was possible. Another very helpful tool for your leadership toolbox!

5 out of 5 stars Packs powerful insights for organizational change!.......2005-04-05

The authors examine the idea that major problems are often not 'discussable,' although they are talked about in a destructive manner, and remain implicit. The consultant should help surface these "elephants" in a constructive dialogue, and push forward to making decisions, determining what are the next steps, and following through. This practical book provides guidelines to show how to achieve organizational change by learning to name "elephants" and take action. High Reliability Organizations, which reward people for pointing out any deviations from the expected, are discussed. The style of leadership needed to achieve change through getting people to open up and constructively participate in problem solving, is explored. This thin book is both broad and deep, and proves highly informative and thought provoking. It packs powerful insights for organizational change!

5 out of 5 stars An inimitable voice brimming with life and good humor.......1997-11-27

The Audio cassette version of Jim Valvano's book, THEY GAVE ME A LIFETIME CONTRACT AND THEN THEY DECLARED ME DEAD, features the inimitable voice of Jim Valvano telling (not reading--TELLING) the story of his life with all the enthusiasm we remember and cherish. There is a laugh in his voice and genuine humor in his stories, most of it at the expense of the author; there is sadness, of course, and hurt; but there's no cynicism.

The listener will be, perhaps, surprised by Valvano's early desperation to achieve goals he set for himself--and entertained by the lengths to which he went to reach them. The result is both inspiring and enlightening, considering the cloud under which he left his position as the head basketball coach at N.C. State.

The brew of life, joy, and good humor at the top of the sports world has made this tape a favorite among my family and friends. It's the only one we can all agree to hear in the car on long trips; I can't keep a copy in the house. That's why I'm ord

                3 out of 5 stars CLAD Text.......2003-12-31

A well written text essential for acquiring CLAD credentialing. Myths are perpetuated which greatly reduces the credibility - there is only one "race", humans or Homo sapiens. Very few of us were born or came from the Caucasus Mountains of eastern Europe, yet 17th century artificial constructs of "race" and "Caucasian" are used. There is no discussion of how skin pigmentation is an ecotype adaptation, not a "race." Science, Scientific American, Discovery and other peer-reviewed journals have corrected "race" misconceptions repeatedly - yet the authors, with education backgrounds, appear to have not completed a review of current literature.

There is no discussion of critical thinking (www.criticalthinking.org). Children of "color" are discussed, but there is no discussion of children of "pallor". The 3rd edition can be greatly improved by being current, i.e., people of pallor (so-called "white") are now the "minority" in many communities; a CD-ROM or DVD and online video streaming resources; correct use of the term "race."

Inquiry is discussed under Science, but only the Natl Science Education Standards are acknowleged - TIMSS, Geography, Project 2061 (AAAS), GLOBE (www.globe.gov) 15,000+ schools in 100 countries on 7 continents and multiple other standards are ignored.

The authors get it wrong regarding the language of Science, many students with nonEnglish backgrounds have an advantage over English speakers because of the Latin and Greek roots. Effective teaching uses "hands-on, minds-on" not "familiarize, memorize, regurgitate and forget." Effective K-12 and university instructors minimize lecturing and maximize opportunities to internalize knowledge across curricula.

A wealth of current critical thinking, classroom management and teaching techniques will go a long way toward helping make this a credible, rather than a required text.

                5 out of 5 stars Golden resource.......2002-08-06

I almost felt like I was cheating on the CLAD test. This handbook was a wonderful resource and the only one I used to pass the test .... the FIRST time!!

5 out of 5 stars Preparing to take the CLAD test........2001-10-27

Chapters 1 & 2 seemed very dry but I'm not big on theory. The remaining chapters were much more interesting. I highly recommend reading it before taking the CLAD test.

                4 out of 5 stars High Level.......2005-08-01

If you want to know Symbian from a high level, buy this book.

2 out of 5 stars No good for beginners.......2005-02-15

As a semi-experienced C++ programmer, I found this book utterly useless. The book contains no full working program examples. What code is offered is so out-of-context as to be indecypherable. It makes no effort to get you up and running quickly.

Definately of no use to someone who doesn't already know almost everything about C++ in Symbian OS. So, useless to everybody except academics and Symbian employees! If you do buy this anyway, prepare to read the whole book through 3 times, spend a lifetime in the forums and a fortune on coffee and headache pills, before you can approach a semblance of reasonable proficiency.

A beginners' book is due to be published in October 2005 by Symbian Press. Till then, stick with Java for mobile development unless your life depends upon it.
