Book Description
Like Hayek, Mises moved beyond economics in his later years to address questions regarding the foundation of all social science. But unlike Hayek's attempts, Mises's writings on these matters have received less attention than they deserve.
Theory and History should be required for any student of 20th century ideas.

The Methodology Of Individualism.......2003-10-09
Ludwig von Mises wrote four masterpieces: THE THEORY OF MONDEY AND CREDIT, SOCIALISM, HUMAN ACTION, and THEORY AND HISTORY. THEORY AND HISTORY was published in 1957 and is the easiest of the four books, and a good starting point to understand the philosophical underpinnings of Mises' thought.
THEORY AND HISTORY is an outstanding work on the methodology of the social sciences. As usual, Mises uses economics and sociology to criticize all varieties of leftism. The starting point for von Mises is the acting individual. Man acts rationally to achieve certain ends. What appears to be collective action is simply the action of numerous individuals. Based on this, Mises shows that collectivist theories fail to take into account the essentially individualist nature of human action. Marx claimed to be a scientist of the inevitable forces of human action, yet he inconsistently involved himself in day-to-day politics. Engles went so far as to say that had Napoleon died when he was young, history would have produced another Napoleon. Mises then discusses theories of history such as those advanced by Buckle, Spengler, and Toynbee.
One of the most exciting things about reading von Mises is how socialist fallacies fall page after page. Not only does he refute their fallacies, but he has a way of seeing right through them. For example, how can one criticize modern capitalist society for being "materialistic'" when it allows the common man to attend Beethoven concerts?
Von Mises dealt with methodology in THE ULTIMATE FOUNDATION OF ECONOMIC SCIENCE, EPISTEMOLOGICAL PROBLEMS OF ECONOMICS, and HUMAN ACTION.

Book Description
There's more to work and the life of the organization than just numbers. In his new book on how people function in work settings, Allcorn calls it the human spirit. It too contributes to the life and performance of organizations, but like life itself it can die--or be killed. Allcorn argues that changes in how organizations are managed--downsizing, rightsizing, reengineering, and other catastrophic means--can have an unintended but devastating result. These factors can cause spiritual death--the end of that quality in people that keeps them alive, growing, and productive. Allcorn shows that management and the methods it uses to cope with organizational change must be adjusted to take into account a special kind of workplace spirituality and to nurture it, not destroy it. Indeed, he maintains that by appreciating the importance of the human spirit, and liberating the quality of spirituality into the workplace, benefits to the organization can be profoundly rewarding. Allcorn explains the practical, measurable results of this liberation, documenting his assertions in heartbreaking detail. Even the most tough-minded executive will soon come to consider this book as essential as a spreadsheet. Allcorn asserts that while spirituality inevitably has religious connotations, in his use of the word, it is fundamentally secular and powerfully humanistic. Besides the rationality of numbers and the irrationalities common to a defensive workplace, there is something else that permits members of organizations to rise above workplace adversities. This creates organizational success. As employees are downsized out or just furloughed, the effect on the organization and those who remain is clearly destructive. The author concludes that the way for an organization to achieve success is certainly not by killing its people's spirit by firing them. Other means exist to preserve the organization, and Allcorn explores them in careful, useful detail.

Book Description
"Reviews a wide range of methods for soil physical analysis. Considers applications, accuracy, measurement time, and cost of equipment. Provides examples of applications."
Book Description
Described as "by far the best book of its kind" (Henry McHenry, Evolution) and "the best introduction to the problems and data of modern palaeoanthropology yet published" (R. A. Foley, Antiquity), The Human Career has proved to be an indispensable tool in teaching human origins since its publication in 1989. This substantially revised edition retains Richard Klein's innovative approach and incorporates new findings from the past decade.
The Human Career chronicles the evolution of people from the earliest primates through the emergence of fully modern humans within the past 200,000 years. Its comprehensive treatment stresses recent advances in knowledge, including, for example, ever more abundant evidence that fully modern humans originated in Africa and spread from there, replacing the Neanderthals in Europe and equally archaic people in Asia. With its coverage of both the fossil record and the archeological record over the 2.5 million years for which both are available, Klein emphasizes that human morphology and behavior evolved together. Throughout the text, Klein presents evidence for alternative points of view, but also does not hesitate to take a position.
In addition to outlining the broad pattern of human evolution, The Human Career details the kinds of data that support this pattern, including information on archeological sites, artifacts, fossils, and methods for establishing dates in geological time. With abundant references and hundreds of illustrations, charts, and diagrams, this new edition is unparalleled in its usefulness for teaching human evolution.

It helps to have some knowledge.......2002-11-27
about geology, anthropology and paleantology. This book gives minutely detailed information about everything from history to bones. It should really be used as a reference. There is probably no better book on the subject, it was recommended to me by an anthropologist
Excellent and thorough.......2000-10-12
By far the most complete and up-to-date treatment of hominid evolution I have encountered. Covers every aspect of paleoanthropology, including climatic changes and dating techniques, in great detail and precision, but with language that even a non-scientist such as myself can understand. An outstanding reference book.
A great overview.......2000-06-07
One of the definitive texts on the evolution of the hominidae. This text presents some very complex material in a very straightforward way with plenty of diagrams, charts, and maps. Many of the controversies found in the field of paleoanthropology are glossed over or skipped altogether, but this volume is still one of the best for an introduction to human evolution both biologically and culturally. A must for anthropology students especially with all the new discoveries in the past few years.

Good Pictures.......2004-02-20
This book is about basic technique. The picture sequences are very good and show exactly how to execute these basic techniques. Although the descriptions are not very involved, the photos make it clear what the authors are trying to teach. This is a good companion to Get Rolling by Liz Miller.
Good book.......2001-12-22
Good book for the beginner. Lots of pictures. Reviews various techniques. Would like to have more explanation at times.
A considerate book for beginner!.......1998-05-03
This a real wonderful book with sequence colour pictures for all the basic movements. It's a joy to read this book. There is nothing else in this book really, just techniques and techniques. It's pure skating.

Customer Reviews:
Don't be fooled - it's actually a cartoon book!.......2002-08-28
Yes, that's right. I was completely fooled. This books is just a bunch of cartoons, written with text. Very unprofessional. Very uninformative. Too childish! Nothing you would want. I'm shocked it's on the market. If this piece of dung can get published, then we all have a chance with our own mindless doodles.
great for beginner.......2000-06-08
This book is easy to read and the writer give a good number of useful tips.
As a beinnger who has just skate a fw times, this book allows me to know more about skating and some of the movements.
Nowhere Near Complete -- Even For Beginners.......1999-12-13
Let's start with the cover of the book. "Basic and advanced techniques" it says. Really? Crossing one skate over the other and jumping in place are about as advanced as this book gets.
For the complete beginner, this can be a handy book. If you've never set foot on skates, or can't figure out how to stop, this book can help. If you'd like to read a brief history of in-line skating, this book can help. If you're interested in skating purely for physical fitness, this book can help.
If, on the other hand, you're interested in learning more than how to stop, go, turn and skate backwards (though I find this instructions for skating backwards to be lacking) then keep looking, you won't find any "advanced" information here.
All in all, this book touches lightly on a variety of beginner's topics, but fails to keep its promises, especially to those looking to get more in-depth.

Everything you Need to Learn German.......2007-09-27
I was terrified when my 8th grader elected to study one of the few languages that I don't speak, but the Ultimate German program has since relieved most of that anxiety. The comprehensive grammar sections and easy to introduce dialogues make learning beginning German both effective and fun. The set includes 8 CDs for both classroom and homework use, and provide for plenty of practice time. I recommend moving more slowly than the lesson a week standard with younger students, as each lesson includes A LOT of grammar, but this program is an effective tool in introducing a modern language into your curriculum.
Great for Learning German.......2007-08-13
This book is great for learning German with or without the CDs.
(Note: If you are learning on your own, I would definitely recommend that you purchase the CDs since words are not pronounced as you may think! If you want to learn in your car as well, you can substitute the Living Language's "All Audio German" CD set for the one you can get with this book, which has about 75% of the material in the book covered in a very quick manner.)
The book covers numerous topics you are likely to encounter in German-speaking countries. Unlike most textbooks, this book has an answer key in the back. Each chapter includes a reading, the translation of the reading, details on the grammar points introduced in the reading, an extended vocabulary list, problems and finally some cultural notes.
Each chapter covers a particular topic. Topics cover everything from arriving, ordering food, buying and returning items, and getting medical help. Depending upon how much time you have and how fast you learn, this book could keep you busy for a couple of months to several years.
The only book I'd recommend more for complete beginners is the PONS "Beginners' Course German" with audio CD, though I have not seen this outside of Germany. The PONS course offers less material, but the colorful format and slower speed may be better for those new to the German language. However, the Living Language book does offer so much more material for the same (or lower) price.
If you are only intersted in speaking (and comprehending spoken) German, then the Pimsleur Language Program is better (though MUCH more expensive). However, if you want to read and write German as well, I would definitely recommend this book with the CDs.
The most helpful way to get started!.......2007-05-23
I moved to Austria some years ago and this is what helped me to learn German. I had taken some classes before at a German school in my hometown, and even though it was a good school I didn't learn much. This set and the advanced were real lifesavers for me. You'll still need much more than this, and a lot of time and practice, to speak good German, but this course will give you a great start. It teaches you a lot for the price. Intensive courses in a German speaking country are surely better, if you can afford them! But if you can't, or you live far away from a language school, this set is a great choice. There were several mistakes on the previuos edition; hopefully not in this one. The program is great anyway. Good luck!
This is a Fabulous CD set........2007-04-26
I have listened to this beginning CD set while I was driving long distances. It is wonderful! This set is well thought through and words are grouped according to the category in which they are most used. It allows you to figure new words out without really knowing.
The speakers have different dialects which give you a real listening ability for how the sounds are made differently in the areas of Germany.
This is one of the best CD sets I have ever used. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn quickly, easily, and effortlessly.
Ultimate German Beginner-Intermediate(CD/Book).......2007-03-09
I am living in Germnay, so I decided to take a German I class. I have just finished German I and have found the book and especially the CD's of great help. I listen to the CD's everyday and find that this is very helpful for pronunciation.
Book Description
The most dangerous mission of their military careers awaits two heroes of the Roman army in Britain.
In the epic fourth novel of Simon Scarrow’s series, it’s ad 44 and Vespasian and the Roman Army’s Second Legion are forging ahead in their campaign to seize the southwest. Centurion Macro and newly appointed Centurion Cato are ordered by Vespasian to provide Verica, aged ruler of the Atrebates, with an army. They must train his tribal levies into a force that can protect him, enforce his rule, and take on the increasingly ambitious raids that the enemy is launching.
But open revolt is brewing. Despite the Atrebates’ official allegiance to Rome, many are wary of the legions and want to resist the Roman invaders, and Macro and Cato must first win the loyalty of the disgruntled levies before tackling the enemy without. Can they succeed while surviving a deadly plot to destroy both them and their comrades serving with the eagles? In the midst of this highly volatile situation, Macro and Cato face the greatest test of their army careers. Theirs is a brazen tale of military adventure, political intrigue, and heroism, as only they stand between the destiny of Rome and bloody defeat.
“A relatively new master of the genre.”---Booklist
“Simon Scarrow’s stories of Roman military action . . . have gathered quite a fan club. Plenty of bloody thrills and spills. . . . Scarrow’s latest book will prove irresistible.”---Living History (UK)
Customer Reviews:
Military Romance.......2007-09-24
The series from which this book comes is a military version of the kinds of romances purchased by the pound by women romance fans. The writing is pedestrian, and the kinds of military details and references to Roman history are cliched and repeated in each book of the series for the sake of new readers. The unimaginative use of an older centurion sponsor of a younger, ambitious sidekick can be found in any "buddy" novel or moview. Unless you're really hooked on this kind of men's romance novel, give it a miss.
Enjoyable though light read.......2007-07-22
Simon Scarrow's The Eagle & The Wolves is an enjoyable light read, worth reading to the end but not worth rereading. It is what it is.
Scarrow's series of Roman military history has been well received, as more people develop an interest in the time period. It helps in the case of this book that Scarrow, a British teacher and writer, bases the action in Britain during the time of Caractacus' uprising, meaning English readers in particular may be more drawn to the topic. Besides the historical character of Caractacus, here spelled alternatively `Caratacus', who did in fact lead a guerrilla campaign against the Romans after the Claudian conquest of 43 AD, there is also Vespasian, who will go on to become Emperor himself (the final victor during the civil wars in the Year of the Four Emperors, 69 AD. The main protagonists are Cato and Macro, who are tasked with training a small allied local tribe, and have to wend their way through tribal politics, successions, murder, guerrilla attack, and the like.
Scarrow is best in describing camp and village life on the micro scale, topics not often brought up in books on the time. I liked the training regimen, learning to handle the weaponry, and teaching some typical legionary tactics. The author displays his depth of knowledge for his subject without writing condescendingly, and I thought this was the best of the work. Also nicely done is the sense of the action taking place in a very dangerous and uncertain part of the world, far from Rome, with inadequate communications and constant danger outside the walls. Less well done were the internal politics of the village, the conclusion of which seemed pretty predictable and not especially deep or complicated. The book is not strong on plotting. It's okay, it's just not Scarrow's strong suit. Finally, what to me was least interesting was the dialogue. Writing good dialogue can be very difficult; when one is replicating dialogue from almost 2000 years ago one has to decide just how modern or contemporary to write. Scarrow's choice has been to write as though his characters were speaking to one another in British English, especially slang, about 15 minutes ago. The story line is clear, he gets his point across, but for this reader anyhow it detracted from the period feel he is trying to get from the rest of his narrative. "Bloody" this, and "f-ing" that; no doubt the Roman legionaries had their phrases to describe precisely this kind of thought. But it just seems a little bumpy.
The book makes for enjoyable reading. When it was done I was ready to move on to something a little deeper.
Hot Space.......2007-01-15
Oh yeah, this one has the good's. It's like what Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme) said about Queen's Hot Space album; they have the proper spacings of space between the pulse of the music. Scarrow's tale has the grist turning throughout counterbalanced by the ominous silence of future developments. Forgive another simile so soon but it's like the third album of a favorite band: the first album is heavy, the second album incorporates a horn section and 20 backing vocalists as the artists want to 'explore', and then the artist return to their straightforward format of undiluted music on their third attempt. Scarrow strips it down to guitar, bass, and drums here. They instruments know when to thunder and when to restrain. Read this book for sure.
Great History of Romans in Britain.......2006-03-27
Simon Scarrow has written a great novel based on history. At first, I was somewhat surprised with the rough language he used during conversations between Macro and Cato, both Centurions of the Second Legion of Vespasian. Mr. Scarrow's writing style is very similar to Bernard Cornwell's. The plot is quite straight forward. This novel is also very easy to read. I did not find heavy issues poured into either the plot or characters. If you are looking for a "heavy" historical reading, this is not the book.
Other than the Roman cultures being exploited by the author, Britain's cultures were also described in (gory) details. The Romans in this novel was depicted to be a highly advanced civilization, compared to Britain. Thus, a reader can vividly imagine all the livelihood of people in his novel.
A four-star read. Keep up the good work, Mr. Scarrow.
Life in Roman occupied Britain.......2005-08-14
Well researched view of Roman army life and conditions in first century Britain. The characters are interesting and the plot moves quickly. I would recommend it to students of Roman history and to those who just like a good story.
