Book Description
Humanity is risking the health of the natural environment through a myriad of interventions, including the atmospheric emission of trace gases such as carbon dioxide, the use of ozone-depleting chemicals, the engineering of massive land-use changes, and the destruction of the habitats of many species. It is imperative that we learn to protect our common geophysical and biological resources. Although scientists have studied greenhouse warming for decades, it is only recently that society has begun to consider the economic, political, and institutional aspects of environmental intervention. To do so raises formidable challenges of data modeling, uncertainty, international coordination, and institutional design.
Attempts to deal with complex scientific and economic issues have increasingly involved the use of models to help analysts and decision makers understand likely future outcomes as well as the implications of alternative policies. This book presents in detail a pair of models of the economics of climate change. The models, called RICE-99 (for the Regional Dynamic Integrated model of Climate and the Economy) and DICE-99 (for the Dynamic Integrated Model of Climate and the Economy) build on the authors' earlier work, particularly their RICE and DICE models of the early 1990s. They can help policy makers design better economic and environmental policies.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent cutting edge book on a vital issue........2004-05-16
The scientific community has developed an overwhelming concensus that global warming is occuring, and is caused at least in part by human activity. William Nordhaus has led the way in studying the potential economic cosequences of global warming, and this book should be considered essential reading for those who are more than a little interested in topic (and shouldn't we all be?). Nordhaus describes past work on the economic costs of global warming, uses a summing-up approach to arrive at estimates of damage costs for greenhouse gas emissions, then compares these results to abatement cost estimates for various policy options. This allows cost-benefit analysis to inform the reader and policymakers about the economic effectiveness of different responses to the problem of global warming.
While some people may question the doom-and-gloom scenarios of activists on this issue, the general criticism leveled by economists critiquing Nordhaus' past work is that he has been, if anything, too conservative in his approach and his assumptions. In the present work, Nordhaus has reduced the rate of discounting for more distant future economic values, increased the range of costs considered, and increased the complexity of his model, thereby strengthening the results of his analysis.
The ideal reader for this book will have some background in economics and statistical analysis, allowing him to fully appreciate the quality of Nordhaus' work, but readers less schooled in these disciplines will be able to glean much valuable information from Nordhaus' approachable descriptions of the problem, the analysis, and the conclusions. Again, William Nordhaus is the acknowledged leader in researching costs of global warming. "Warming the World: Economic Models of Global Warming" should find its way to college classrooms and private bookshelves alike.
Replace assumption with knowledge........2001-08-29
The author assumes as factual the uses of ozone eating chemicals and destruction wrought by emissions of trace gases. Hence the possibility opens up to discuss the tremendously complex ways in which the problems need to be addressed. It will come as a complete surprise to both the author and the unsuspecting reader that there are no problems which need such complex and costly remedies. There is no gain in sacrificing the public's wealth on avoiding risks which do not exist. All the money spent contributes to is the material well-being of those involved in addressing the man-made catastrophe predictions. This volume is long on words and short on intellectual honesty.

Book Description
This book examines the allocational and distributional impacts of international climate policy on different regions of the world by taking into account the ongoing process of globalization. It concentrates on the impacts of trade in goods and international capital mobility on climate policy outcomes. The costs of an international climate policy are assessed by incorporating the Kyoto Protocol into a multi-regional, multi-sectoral, recursive dynamic trade model based on empirical data. Climate policy leads to a change in relative competitiveness between sectors and regions, thus inducing output shifts, international capital flows, welfare changes and carbon leakage. Welfare costs can be reduced by a higher integration into the world market and a diversification of the export structure.

Customer Reviews:
where are the secret techniques??.......2005-01-09
Supposedly, Morihei Ueshiba gave this manual to all students who had attained 3rd dan (which was teaching certificate at the time) and it contained many of the more advanced and secret techniques in Aikido. So I was elated when this book came out and bought it with expectation that with the secret technique written in this book, I can finally become like O'Sensei and beat up 200,000 people and finally avenge the death of my master.
Unfortunately for me, and my master, this book contained no new secret techniques which enabled me to gain superhuman powers and flip people over just with my death stare. In fact, I had already known 99% of techniques in this book. Furthermore, Aikido techniques are mostly Ki (internal power) and footwork, and this book concentrates mostly on the upper body techniques, which are neccessary, but certainly not advanced techniques.
an intelligent man.......2003-04-24
Aikido was invented during the early 20th century by Morihei Ueshiba. His art can be called the art of peace and simplicity. It's probabily the only Japanese martial art that can defend against Chinese martial artists.
Ueshiba learned all sorts of Chinese martial arts and remodeled it into a simplified version of self-defending. He is a really open-minded artist -- he does not refuse absorbing anything that is good for his purpose. He removed the ingredient of attacking, and created Aikido.
He is a very intelligent man. The intelligence transformed into the way of Aikido. His idea is to make you collapse yourself if you attack him!
I read the Japanese edition of this book, and I would recommend this book to all people who love Chinese and Japanese martial arts.
If you are learning some sort of martial art, this book is a really nice reference as well.
But don't forget Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do!! They have something very similar -- the simplicity.
Valuable Pre-WWII View of Ueshiba Morihei's Aikido!.......2003-02-10
This is the English translation of the volume by Aikido Founder Ueshiba Morihei called "Budo Renshu" ("Budo Training"). Ueshiba Sensei's first book, this volume was originally published in 1933. Techniques are illustrated with drawings and accompanied by brief narrative instructions. The techniques are MUCH closer (in fact, nearly identical) to Daito Ryu Jujutsu than the flowing post-World War II Aikido, as Ueshiba Sensei was still associated with his D.R.J. teacher, Takeda Sogaku. You will also get a taste of the original philosophy of Ueshiba's martial art, as a section called "Secret Teachings of Bu-do", composed of 38 poems he wrote, even includes one poem which alludes to the martial strength of Imperial Japan;
" 'Bu' received from the Gods at the beginning of the world,
Is ours for protecting the nation:
The Emperor's exhalted voice!" [....]
As most works on Aikido present the philosophy of Aikido developed by Ueshiba Morihei in the aftermath of WWII, this book offers a unique look at the art BEFORE it had reached its final stage of development. It was written during a period of time when combat was still necessary to survival, and a practical art was more likely to have a "-jutsu" attatched to the end of its name than a "-do". This was Aikido in the days before deep philosophical theories and teachings based on love and flow. Ueshiba sensei was 50 years old at the time this volume was published. It is a lot of fun to go through this book and compare the techniques with those used in modern forms of Aikido, as well as related schools like Hapkido. If you're interested in the development of grappling arts or in considering the development of Aikido as an art, this book will be useful for you.
Technical Handbook.......2000-10-25
This is the first book written by Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido. This was intended as a technical manual for his students and not for those outside the Dojo. It has the diagrams for completing 166 techniques. If you are looking for a book to explain Aikido and the History of O'Sensei, this is not the book for you. But if you want to have the Book that O'Sensei wanted his students to use for review.....this is a must.
A good overview of Aikido.......1999-08-02
This book is the perfect "study at home" manual for the Aikido student. It's hard to remember all the Aikido techniques, and this book is exactly what the student needs for that purpose. I would recommend it to anyone studying Aikido.

Useful for teaching a class, but just as a guide.......2006-01-24
The best thing about this book is that it presents all kinds of situations that are culturally relevant to the Philippines, and are good conversation-starters for in-class dialogues and improvisation. With a teacher, the book can be quite useful, and the lessons are broken up neatly into 1-day segments, without depending much on the sequence in which they are used. The grammar is spotty and there are better places to go for that. (Wolff's books are the best for grammar in my opinion.) Also, this book won't tell you what many words mean, and even the vocab sections don't have pronunciations listed. This can be a problem, as it's not always clear how to find a work in a dictionary, plus accent often changes from the forms that you find in the dictionary. In short, this book is much less useful if you don't have a teacher that you see every day. Nonetheless, as far as I know, it is the most widely used book for instruction in Tagalog university courses around the US.
OK, but with reservations.......2004-07-15
For self-instruction, this book is just OK. It does provide a decent introduction to the vocabulary and grammar, but don't expect to be able to speak or understand much Tagalog at the end. The grammatical explanations are confined to describing the forms of the word, but almost nothing is said about HOW the forms are used (especially the different verb forms, the heart of the language). You will have no idea how to use an actor-focus verb versus an object-focus verb. On the other hand, I do like the vocabulary lists at the back that are arranged by topic. Ramos' strong point is providing some information about Filipino culture. This one not bad given some limitations; you could do worse. But for serious learners, I recommend Pilipino Through Self-Instruction, by John Wolff, et al., from Cornell.
O ano ba kumusta kayo?! This is a nice way to learn!.......2004-03-18
This was a wonderful. It is a great way to learn to speak tagalog and unlike other products almost everything I say, my Tagalog speaking friends understand just exactly what I'm talking about. If you buy this book you should Definitely buy a tagalog-english/english-tagalog dictionary because this book was designed for a class room that has a teacher to explain pronunciation and different words. It has a tagalog-english glossary in the back, but if you are like me (still learning) you will be looking back there (in the glossary) at least 4 to 5 times per page that you read and there is only a 50% chance that the word you will be looking for is there. By the end of this book you will have a better understanding of tagalog sentence structure, be able to speak conversationally in a variety of situation (not all situations), and will be impressing your filipino friends and their famlies. O sige, Diyan ka na. Pupunta ako sa aklatan. Paalam
good introductory-level text.......1999-06-09
I found this book complimented my other books well in learning Tagalog. There are many gramatical explinations and good vocabulary builders. The focus is not pure memorization but to develop your skills in the language and understand how it works. The text is probably better for a more structured learning environment. It is not geared towards the "Teach yourself" learner.
a good place to start.......1998-07-31
This book does include many useful phrases, and will teach you some basic vocabulary. However, the instruction on grammar stops at giving examples of phrases. Given a slightly different situation, the examples you've memorized could be rendered useless. A good book for those going to the Philippines for the first time and those who want just enough to get by on. If your aim is fluency or actual conversation, however, I would look somewhere else.
Book Description
With a distinguished career spanning more than sixty years, Richard Wilbur stands as one of America's preeminent men of letters. Collected Poems 1943-2004 is the comprehensive collection of Wilbur's astonishing, timeless work. It will serve as the most referenced trove of this beloved poet's best verses for many years to come.
In Trackless Woods
In trackless woods, it puzzled me to find
Four great rock maples seemingly aligned,
As if they had been set out in a row
Before some house a century ago,
To edge the property and lend some shade.
I looked to see if ancient wheels had made
Old ruts to which the trees ran parallel,
But there were none, so far as I could tell-
There'd been no roadway. Nor could I find the square
Depression of a cellar anywhere,
And so I tramped on further, to survey
Amazing patterns in a hornbeam spray
Or spirals in a pine cone, under trees
Not subject to our stiff geometries.
Customer Reviews:
A superb cross-sampling of the best of Wilbur's work.......2006-05-06
Collected Poems 1943-2004 is an anthology of poetry by Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner Richard Wilbur, who has previously served as poet laureate of the United States. The compendium features works in a variety of formats, meters, and rhyme schemes, with themes ranging from the mundane to the extraordinary. A superb cross-sampling of the best of Wilbur's work, Collected Poems 1943-2004 is a treasury recommended for both libraries and private poetry shelves, and is certain not to disappoint true poetry lovers. "On Having Mis-Identified a Wild Flower": A thrush, because I'd been wrong, / Burst rightly into song / In a world not vague, not lonely, / Not governed by me only.
A Library Star.......2006-03-18
This collection of the poems of Richard Wilbur is in several ways a gem. Not only does it contain the bulk of the works of Wilbur, who is one of the very few major poets of our era, it is also that rarity in today's publishing industry; that is, a beautiful book, well printed on good quality paper in a most readable typeface, and elegantly bound. Wilbur's work is notable for his affinity with the poetry of Europe and elsewhere. His translations from the French, in particular, are all of a high standard. Wilbur is not afraid to write verse which has rhyme, rhythm, and elegance. This is a book to be treasured.
Necessary.......2006-02-08
I first read Richard Wilbur's poems more than 20 years ago, but I have to admit that for most of that time he has been for me like the fire brigade or catastrophic health insurance -- I was glad he was there, but for whatever reason he didn't seem terribly relevant in my life.
This book helped remind me how wrong I have been.
Upon reflection, I realize that at least part of the reason for my undervaluing Mr. Wilbur's work stems from my own shortcoming: I was probably too young to appreciate his delicate insight and wit when I formed my opinions about him. But the main reason is probably because he's such a forgettable personality. He is a white male. Like most men of his generation, he served in the army during World War II. He doesn't use strange punctuation marks or filthy language. I know almost nothing about his personal life, but, as far as I know, he has never considered suicide, he has never been in rehab, he has never gone mad, and he has never been arrested. All he has done is produce beautiful and important poems, virtually non-stop for more than 60 years. In an age in which we are flooded with public personalities that demand to be noticed, that is disappointingly easy to overlook.
Collected Poems, 1943-2004 is probably as close as we're going to get to Mr. Wilbur demanding to be noticed. And if you are the type who enjoys simple pleasures and metrical poise, then you really should notice him as he appears on these pages. Everything Mr. Wilbur wrote through 2004 is included here, including previously unpublished recent poems, song lyrics, children's poems, and the great poet's well-known published works. There is no need to own any other book of Mr. Wilbur's poetry if you buy this.
I'm not enough of a fool to try to use my own words to describe Mr. Wilbur's. Instead, I'll end with the final verse of Seed Leaves, one of my favorite poems in the book:
Forced to make choice of ends,
The stalk in time unbends,
Shakes off the seed-case, heaves
Aloft, and spreads two leaves
Which display no sure
And special signature.
Indeed.
One of ours.......2005-07-28
Wilbur is one of the indispensables; impossible to imagine American poetry, or indeed the American trajectory, without these poems, so deftly shaped, giving such wry light. I am grateful for this book.
this book should be in every home.......2004-11-05
Wilbur's collected poems would be in every American home if poetry was taught better. He is the most technically proficient poet in American literary history. In matters of rhythm, meter, rhyme, shape and form, he is a sculptor, a magician.
Check out these tercets from "First Snow in Alsace," remembering that Wilbur saw pretty much three years of straight combat in World War Two:
The snow came down last night like moths
Burned on the moon; it fell till dawn,
Covered the town with simple cloths.
Absolute snow lies rumpled on
What shellbursts scattered and deranged,
Entangled railings, crevassed lawn.
You think: beyond the town a mile
Or two, this snowfall fills the eyes
Of soldiers dead a little while.
