Book Description

Conflict in the executive ranks often snakes its way down to the trenches, polarizing entire organizations and undermining morale, productivity, and corporate goals. But managed correctly, the passion that powers these conflicts can be turned into a high-performance fuel that transforms not just executive relationships but the mechanics of the whole company.

When Goliaths Clash shows how to treat conflict as a business issue, achieve positive outcomes from divisive relationships, and identify the different sources of conflict, from assumptions, values, and wants, to stylistic clashes and organizational conditions.

The book combines real-world strategies drawn from the author's consulting experience with the results of a 10-year survey of more than 300 executive teams. Packed with examples from companies like Johnson & Johnson, L'Oreal, Motorola, Phillip Morris, and more, this constructive book will help unlock horns -- and open the door to more productive relationships throughout entire organizations.

5 out of 5 stars Packed With Knowledge!.......2004-05-06

This book is built on the premise that a lot of companies have, metaphorically speaking, the head of a dead elephant sitting in their boardrooms. The dead elephant's head represents conflict, disagreement and rivalry between the executives themselves. No one wants to talk about the dead elephant's head, because no one wants to admit that it's there. Unfortunately, it's a big, ugly reality that must be addressed sooner or later, and everyone knows it. Author and consultant Howard M. Guttman maps out a process companies can use to deal more openly and honestly with internal conflicts. He begins with the premise that conflict isn't inherently bad and can even serve a productive purpose, if it's properly managed and conducted according to the rules. We strongly recommend this book to corporate executives - and to the worker bees who have to duck when those Goliaths in the corner offices start slinging rocks.

5 out of 5 stars Great advice for senior and middle managers.......2003-05-20

When Goliaths Clash is full of great advice for managing confilict at the most senior levels of an organization. Since conflict is abundant at all levels in today's organization the same ideas can be applied to manage conflict at all levels. Gutman's advice to confront conflict, not avoid it, is valuable for all managers who want to move their organizations forward.

4 out of 5 stars Practical, powerful, insightful.......2003-04-25

When Goliaths Clash was a practical and grounded guide to addressing issues prevalent in most leadership teams. Unlike other books of this nature, it was not academic or theoretical, but provided common sense advise on how leaders can identify and resolve problems that could be derailing their organization and preventing them from maximizing their effectiveness. I particularly liked the chapter on e mail; a new area of communication landmines and one that has actually exagerated the issues described in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Pratical guide to deal with orginizational conflicts!.......2003-04-24

Great book! A structured insight into human behavior, different management styles and interactions in organizations. Describes real life situations and - more importantly - how to deal with them. Some very thought-full suggestions on how to interact with others at work as well as privately. A practical guide on organizational development and it's role to become more successful. Is easy to read and digest.

I'll certainly keep it close for reference when "Goliats clashes" in my company.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful read for senior line, HR or OD executives.......2003-04-24

This book provides insight and understanding into the powerful dynamics of executive teams. The methodology, frameworks and practical tools are highly useful in creating a higher level of functioning for teams, starting at the top of the organization. Specific examples and case scenarios illustrate how these techniques have contributed to more fulfilling and productive work dynamics in several reknowned organizations. Focusing on the core skills of influencing and conflict resolution, as well as situational leadership, the book outlines a 'road map' for improving the effectiveness of senior teams and their individual players.

Book Description

Against Management argues that management is increasingly being seen as a problem, and not a solution. Martin Parker argues that managing is not the only way to organize and that managerialism is a global form of ideology, which is being used to justify considerable cruelty and inequality. He also suggests that, in a variety of places, an odd collection of people seem to be coming to similar conclusions. It is possible to identify cracks in the religion of managerialism as some of its converts begin to lapse and others intensify their protest. In order to illustrate his argument, Parker draws from a wide variety of sources ndash; anti-corporate activism; books and films which use management as their backdrop; the movement for business ethics and corporate social responsibility; as well as critical management studies and general social theories of the present. Parker's overall argument is that we can see the beginnings of a cultural shift in the image of management and that this is a significant historical change. Perhaps most importantly, it opens up the possibility of exploring non-managerial alternatives to contemporary assumptions about organizing. Against Management deliberately attempts to blur the boundaries between academic and popular writing, and encourages some radical questioning of the common sense that tells us that we need management, managers and management schools. This will be essential reading for second-year undergraduates and above in business and management studies (including MBA), sociology and cultural studies.

The purpose of this book is to provide information on senescent cells and why they are prevented from multiplying via cell division. It includes main sections on the nature of Go/1 transition, factors promoting the cell cycle traverse and avoiding the Go/1 arrest, and negative factors arresting the cell cycle traverse and promoting the stay in the Go/1 stage. Filled with illustrations and explanations, it collectively presents the mechanisms that control the cellular aging process. This reference is a must for anyone with special interests in the biological community, and specifically the field of gerontology.

                                Book Description

Prostaglandins and thromboxane are well-known modulators of vessel tone and platelet activation in the cardiovascular system. Much less is known about their function as growth- modulatory agents for vascular smooth muscle cells. This volume contains chapters from a number of well-known experts on selected aspects of vascular smooth muscle function, phenotype expression and regularion of proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells by prostaglandins and thromboxane. Specific attention is devoted to receptors and cellular signal transduction including oxidative stress, the possible interplay of these eicosanoids with other mediator systems, particularly nitric oxide and peptidergic growth factors. The possible clinical consequences of an improved understanding of how prostaglandins act for the prevention of restenosis, one of the most taxing current problems in vascular biology, are also considered. This volume can be highly recommended to all scientists, clinicians and other specialists interested in obtaining an up-to-date and comprehensive overview on the action of prostaglandins on smooth muscle cell proliferation.

"One of those rare reference guides that is as much fun to read as it is useful. On every page this work offers fascinating testimony to the enduring importance of the sea to our culture."--Nathaniel Philbrick, author of the bestsellingIn the Heart of the Sea

While the body of knowledge associated with the sea is as vast as the sea itself, there is a core of information that is indispensable to understanding maritime history and culture. This unique reference provides that knowledge. Its m ore than 3,500 entries describe the ideas, events, and individuals that have shaped our maritime language, geography, commerce, warfare, law, literature, art, film, and more.

This is a handy little reference volume, but may not be what you think it is. It covers a variety of nautical topics, some loosely related. There are many references to specific ships, boats and yachts that make for interesting reading, not much in the way of pure nautical terminology. Side references to subjects with nautical themes are fun, as in an entry on "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir," a great book, film, and television show about the ghost of a deceased sea captain and the woman who falls in love with him after moving into his house. On the whole a good reference book, but if you are looking for a volume on nautical lingo or terms, better off to get a maritime dictionary.

This book is wonderful. I received it for Christmas and have already consulted it many times (after having read it cover to cover). It contains information that cannot be found in other reference books. It is truly a unique and refreshing approach to our nautical world and it makes the ideal gift for young and old.

First off, the dude from New Orleans should have at least read the Book Description offered by Mr. McKenna...maybe he wouldn't have been surprised, or miss led (sic). I sure hope any potential buyers of this book don't take him seriously, because they will be missing an absolute gem. This book was not meant to be a complete compendium of every hackneyed boating term, and thank God it isn't. How much fun would THAT be to read? The Dictionary of Nautical Literacy is the kind of book you can pick up, flip open to any page, and start enjoying. You'll get at least one "I didn't know that!" on every page...guaranteed. The cross-references keep you jumping all over the alphabet, BY DESIGN. This is not meant to be read from A to Z, so don't try. I rate this as the perfect gift for anyone with a nautical bent: boater, sailor, collector, enthusiast. Get one, you won't be sorry.

Stating this is a Nautical Dictionary is a great miss direction. I believe a nautical dictionary is to be as complete as possible listing of nautical terms. That is what I thought the foundation of the book would be. Having failed on that part, I question other information contain in this book.
A good test for this book is to get any boating magazine. Highlight the nautical terms, than see how few are addressed in the book.

                                        Book Description

By following this 16-step writing program, any writer can fulfill the dream of completing a novel that is ready to submit to agents and editors. No matter what type of novel the reader wants to write--western to romance to literary to fantasy--this program will work.

It breaks down the novel-writing process into small, manageable tasks that even the most inexperienced writers can achieve. Readers will learn how to find a hook, create a conflict, develop a protagonist and set her into motion.

Formerly an editor and now a successful literary agent, Marshall knows the marketplace. His expertise illuminates every subject, from insightful advice about choosing the right story to strategies for building that story with an eye toward publication. He includes plenty of diagrams, charts and section sheets to make following the program easier, and there's even a section with proven advice and information for writing effective query letters and submitting manuscripts for publication.

The methodology presented in this book is great for creating interweaving plot and sub-plots, with depth to more than just the lead protagonist and antagonist. By following the steps, you end up with a good story line that has peaks and valleys.

A key part of this process that lets it work with the weekend or part-time novelist is how it has you create detailed sections from various character's view point, listing the action and subsequent reactions to those scenes. This can be done over a period of time, and then when those are finished, you go back and write out the scenes in detail as your first draft. Again, something that can be done over a period of time as you have it, without losing track of the story because you have already outlined it.

Definitely recommended for genre fiction in particular.

                                        3 out of 5 stars X + Y Does Not Equal a Good Novel.......2007-02-09

I haven't read many books about how to write a novel, but I can tell that this one has problems. If you want to write formulaic fiction, this book is for you. If your book may falls into a rigid predetermined word count that can be divided into 175,236 words and 113 sections, you're off to a good start. Marshal relies on the "section" system. He calls sections what most writers call scenes: the bits and pieces of your book where your characters act and talk. Marshal says you should have a preset number of words and then create a certain number of sections to fit with this word count. However, this adds up to working a formula if you're not careful.

What is lacking is how to develop good characters. Marshal provides a character fact sheet, but it's just a wrapsheet of what your character looks like, characteristic phrases he or she uses, and whether or not the character smokes. That's as about in depth as it gets.

I just keep envisioning Marshal typing, "a tablespoon of villain, a cup of subplot, a dash of the Point of Hopelessness, and there you have your novel." All in all it's not a terrible book, but you must take it with a grain of salt. On the surface the Marshal Plan looks rigid. But you don't have to follow it rigidly. It provides guidelines that you as a creative writer can follow or not follow as they fit into your writing.

The Marshall Plan for Novel Writing includes plenty of practical and thought-provoking material, but there are two chapters that set this book apart from the competition.

One of the many concepts that confused me as a novice writer was the terminology used to describe different types of writing. Different books described narrative, summary, scene, exposition, dialogue, introspection, flashbacks, and recollections, but none provided a satisfactory explanation of each and how they relate to one another, especially for use by a novelist.

In chapters 10 and 11, Evan Marshall describes five writing modes: action, summary, dialogue, feelings/thoughts, and background. He defines each and outlines their uses. As soon as I read about the writing modes, I began incorporating them into my writing and into my study of writing. Years later, I still find writing modes to be insightful in concept and helpful in practical use.

Marshall's writing modes offer a superior model for understanding and explaining the different types of writing used to construct fiction. For me, the writing modes have stood the test of time. I continue to be amazed that more articles and books about fiction-writing don't incorporate them.

The chapters addressing writing modes are well worth the cost of purchasing The Marshall Plan for Novel Writing.

Marshal's book does not tell you what to write, but instead gives one a great guideline on how to organize your thoughts, chapters, events, and keep things moving. The advice inspired me, organized me, and gave me a sign ahead to keep swimming toward. Excellent book that is exactly what I've always been waiting for, it delivers all it promises, and more. Stuck? This is definately the book you need, for it is the ideal method for those who find outlines work best for them.

I'll be honest: when I bought this book, I was suspicious already. The promise of the book was too kitschy, too close to those "write a novel in 10 days" things. Well, I bought it nevertheless, and read it all. And although it did not deliver the magic formula that ir promised, it did deliver a structured plan to put the ideas in order and to achieve some balance in any long story. The dullness or keenness of your story will depend on things that are actually not in the Marshall Plan, but if you follow the plan at least you can monitor the balance and be sure you don't get too dispersed. Nowadays, I don't follow the Marshall Plan, but I do follow a plan. For me, the best thing in the book was to teach me that you can have a plan, and how you can create your own plan. And here, it was helpful.
One comment on context: it seems to me (although I think it's never explicitly said) that Mr. Marshall follows Jack Bickham ("Writing and Selling your Novel", "Scene and Structure"), who follows Dwight Swain ("Techniques for the Selling Writer"). To take more profit from the Marshall Plan, I suggest reading Swain first, who's the mastermind of the M-R stimulus and Scene/Sequel structuring, and it's incredibly clear and crisp. Then read Bickham, who adds some more insights and is clear in a very different way ("Writing and Selling..." is enough; "Scene and Structure" is a rehash). Then read Marshall, and you'll see where is he coming from, for he's not as fathomable as Swain.
One more thing: apart from the Plan, Mr. Marshall gives some tips on writing in general. These are very few, but good. I was really surprised.

This book is great for experienced and curious users. It's quite technical for lay users and the way information is presented isn't terribly user-oriented.

But the biggest problem is that Six Apart has updated Movable Type in ways that make this book obsolete in some aspects and that make it necessary to translate concepts in others. At this point, it's probably not worth the trouble to buy the book, and also probably not worth the trouble to write this kind of book when updates are so extensive and frequent.

2 out of 5 stars This book is difficult.......2005-03-18

Unless you already have solid experience writing software, you will find this book overwhelming. But it is better than the program documentation. There are few other choices. It looks like it was rushed to press and many of the examples don't quite work on my provider's server configuration, e.g., I don't have access to the unix command line so isn't always easy to envision the file structures. (If you didn't understand the last line, you might consider paying the folks at Movable Type to build your blog.)

But in all fairness, this is a difficult subject to explain. Since personal blogging is so new on the scene, it seems like the blog jargon is still a little fuzzy. Liberal use of Google helps. Since many of the concepts in blogging software are new to me, I would have appreciated a clearer explaination in the introduction, perhaps with some graphic illustrations. Some of the topics here, "Publishing with Movable Type" for example, are filled with examples and terminology that belong in a later section of the book. It would suffice to just give the reader a broader overview of how the software works.

But then it goes into more advanced topics like alternating the template and adding plugins. And even more advanced topics like RSS, Atom, and writing your own plugins. This is thorough book that is well written and will cover everything you need to know to blog with Movable Type.
