Book Description
The US model of media control and policy making is being rapidly exported across the world. Some countries are attempting to preserve their own cultural production, and there are moves to try to keep culture out of the control of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Many books on the political economy of communications have either focused on general tendencies internationally, or have focused on the links between markets and media freedom in specific countries and regions. The uniqueness of this book lies in its focus on both local and international forces. While critiquing international capital, it also acknowledges the bargains that are struck between the local operators and transnationals. The contributors demonstrate the misfit between media ownership and public accountability and look ahead for ways to enable citizens around the world become effective participants in media policy making.
Book Description
There is a strong awareness that the new economy has arrived, and that firms and management need to focus on a plethora of new issues at present only dimly perceived. The astute management of technology can advance not only the fortunes of the innovators, but also of society at large. In this book David Teece considers how firms can exploit technological innovation, protecting their intellectual capital, while staying ahead of the competition. He provides frameworks as well as practical advice, looking in particular at the organization structures most likely to support innovation, and how managerial decisions and strategy affect the division of the gains. This will be essential reading for academics, maangers, and students alike who want to keep abreast of contemporary strategic challenges.
Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommended!.......2001-09-20
In his preface, author David J. Teece promises a theoretical framework for understanding intellectual property and practical advice about managing it. Theory ultimately prevails in this book, but valuable nuggets of managerial guidance await any entrepreneur willing to dig for them. As a professor and as the presenter of Oxford's Clarendon Lecture in Management Studies, from which this book is drawn, Teece naturally tends toward abstract thinking. Some of the territory has been traveled before (i.e. the message that bureaucratic, hierarchical organizations tend to stifle innovation) but Teece adds a lot of intriguing material. We [...] believe analytically minded academics, entrepreneurs and executives will find Teece's volume illuminating, most notably his educated perspective on antitrust activism in the high tech arena. He concludes that government regulators should probably stick to regulating industries they understand. Well, if they want to understand intellectual property, they should start here.
Managing Intellectual Capital. What, how and by whom?.......2001-08-28
You are about to realize a misconception between two related but different terms: intellectual capital and intellectual property. Browsing throughout the book you will hardly find any references to intellectual capital, including a brief definition! Thus you should not be surprised by not finding any reference to intellectual capital in the Index. One would expect some heated discussion over this controversial concept before being offered a framework to manage it. Forget it. Despite author's attempt to write about the promising field of IC all sections seem to converge around the intellectual property discussion. The management of intellectual capital is something else than the management of intellectual capital. The wrong audiences may than be easily caught in this trap.
Provocative theoretical perspectives, some well-worn.......2001-05-26
This is an excellent book on the knowledge-based view of the firm. Although Teece is unsure in his preface whoether is succesfully addresses both academic audiences and managers. From an academic perspective, I can surely claim that this book is theoretically interesting. I recognized two portions of this book that draw heavily on Teece's work published previously in California Management Review (parts of Chapter 1 and all of chapter 4). What is certainly most interesting out of the 300 pages of small type is Section 2. This section provides a compelling set of arguments on the impact of market structures and governance modes on intellectual capital. Notabily missing, however, is incorporation of the knowledge-integration perspective that Grant et. al have been building for the past half decade. The case study on Pilkinton Glass is also well worn, and Teece clearly acknowledges that. Information technologists should not hold thier breath because this work seems to take a rather passive stand on the role of IT in mobilizing intellectual assets. The references at the end provide an impressive array of literature in economics that Teece draws on. The readibility and plausibility of Teece's arguments should come as no surprise to anyone who has read Teece's earlier scholarly work. Overall, I'd say that this was worth the thirty five dollars.

Customer Reviews:
Nicely combine theory and practice.......2005-11-22
I came across this book while doing some phylogenetic analysis and found it very useful.
The first two chapters give some background information on molecular evolution and sequence databases, as well as a downloadable dataset used throughout the book.
The real business starts from chapter 3--multiple sequence alignment (MSA). Problems and algorithms of MSA are briefly reviewed. Here you know how CLUSTALW and T-Coffee work. The presentation of the progressive alignment used in CLUSTALW is especially clear. However, other popular programs are not metioned, probably they are not available or not widely used at the time when the book was written. I recommend PROCONS and MUSCLE for protein alignment and DIALIGN-T for both dna and protein alignment. Check them out.
Chapter 4 reviews nucleotide substitution model, concise and not much math on continuous-time Markov chain(CTMC). A chart shows the relationship between popular models including GTR, TN93, HKY85, F84, F81, K80 and JC. I like it. To know more details of CTMC of these models, however, you need to consult other books. Exercises using PHYLIP and DAMBE can be found.
One someone have the sequence aligned, and genetic/evolutionary distance between them adjusted using say JC, she/he is ready to jump to the next chapter 5 -- Phylogeny Inferrence based on distance methods. Here the outdated UPGMA, mainstream NJ and Fitch-Morgoliash methods are presented by examples, effectively cleaning the fog before these ACRONYM. Bootstrapping and Jacknifing, the two methods for assessing quality of phylogeny, are briefly explained, then progress to exercise using PHYLIP.
The next two chapters are maximum-likelihood with TREE-PUZZLE, and Parimony* (* means MP+ML+Distance) in PAUP*.
Working on dna or protein sequences sometimes can mean a whole lot of difference, these topics are dealt in chapter 8--Phylogenetic analysis using protein sequences and chapter 9--analysis of nucleotide sequences using TREECON.
If you only need to get the tree, you can stop here. The remainign chapters either deal with dN/dS, detecting recomination, or centered on particular software packages including SplitsTree,LAMARC and DAMBE(A heavily used package in this book another is PHYLIP).
Overall, the book is comprehensive, well balanced between practice and theory. Though contributed by different authors, the two editors seamlessly wave these chapters into a nice book. Bravo to them!
My only concern is book does not cover many widely-used programs, but we, the arduous tree constructors, can find them out by ourselves, do we?
very good and very practical.......2005-10-19
it is very convenient and handy for a junior student.

Attacks by cougars, sharks, bears, alligators, lions, tigers, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Lions and tigers and bears and crocodiles and sharks, OH MY!.......2006-12-14
I ordered this book for a friend and it looked interesting. I decided to read it myself and LOVED it! Now I'm buying my own copy. It isn't as graphic as I expected - so it won't "gross you out." It gives tips on surviving bear attacks which I thought were very interesting. According to this book, there are two types of grizzly bear attacks. The DEFENSE attack happens when you surprise a bear, get close to cubs, or get close to it's kill that it is still feeding on when it gets hungry. This is the type attack where the advice is to "play dead" with your arms protecting your head. The PREDATOR attack is when the bear is hunting you. If you are grabbed out of your tent while you are sleeping or otherwise attacked without provocation you are probably thought of as "FOOD." The advice is to fight with anything you have or run. This book also covers the Tsavo man-eaters. These lions were the true inspiration for the movie "Ghost in the Darkness." This is a great read!
An interesting look at deadly animals.......2006-04-08
This entertaining and sometimes frightening book is a collection of personal accounts of man's run-ins with various deadly beasts. I found the chapters on bears and crocodiles were particularly engaging. Before reading this I believe I underestimated these animals. I was somewhat confused by the inclusion of elephants and venomous snakes, which while certainly dangerous do not qualify as the titular "Man Eaters."
I most enjoyed the more modern accounts of animal attacks. Some of these chapters were written before today's era of conservation and have the flavor of the "great white hunter" to them. While the gruesome nature of the human deaths described is disturbing, it is equally so to read one author's casual mention of his personal killing of "1400 elephants."
I would recommend the book because of several very good chapters, but there are certainly chapters which do not live up to my 4 star rating.
Some of the selections are terrific, others lame.......2004-10-22
Summary: A series of essays that revolve around the topic of dangerous animals and their life-threatening encounters with humans.
The book is divided into sections by animal; the first third of the book or so is devoted to bears, and there are also sections on lions, crocodiles, elephants, snakes, sharks, leopards, and cougars. By far the most entertaining material is to be found in the bear section, with other interesting stories about sharks and crocodiles. Some of the stories are told in the first person by the people who have had the harrowing experiences; others are more clinical in nature.
The Good and the Bad: Some of the essays were really excellent, particularly the ones told in the first person. The story of a geologist who lived after being partially eaten by a black bear was the best, and a journalistic story about a series of shark attacks was also very good. Another standout was the firsthand account of the lions of Tsavo. The scientific-sounding accounts, on the other hand, were generally boring, and redundant. The book would have been better with about five fewer selections.
What I learned: Snakes aren't really very dangerous, and will never pursue a man as prey. If you have to be attacked by an apex predator, a bear is preferable, as you have at least a chance of surviving. On the other hand, a crocodile is the worst, as a single bite generally ends your life.

Great how to book for the novice.......2004-07-13
The first thing this book has going for it, is the size, since this is a book that you can carry with you on hunting trips as a step by step guide, or how to. Not only are the instructions absolutely complete but they are easy to follow, and the equipment required is inexpensive and in some cases free.
Every legally hunted bird is covered from field dressing, preserving to cooking and recipes.
The step by step instructions include either exact illustrations and/or black and white clear photographs. It is a book that the novice should own.

The expeditions of Magellan, Columbus, and Lewis and Clark have been well documented and are instantly familiar to anyone with even a passing interest in world history. But the average person is likely unaware of the U.S. Exploring Expedition or its mercurial leader, Charles Wilkes. This despite the numerous accomplishments and lasting legacy of the massive four-year project that involved six ships and hundreds of men. The "Ex. Ex.," as it came to be known, is credited with the discovery of Antarctica, the first accurate charting of what is now Oregon and Washington, the retrieval of thousands of new species of life, and the foundation of the Smithsonian Institution. Yet when Wilkes returned, instead of being hailed as a great man of science or a national hero, he was shunned by the President, ignored by the press, and was the subject of so much ill will on the part of his men that he was ultimately put on trial for a variety of offenses. In the portrayal presented in Nathaniel Philbrick's Sea of Glory, Wilkes is a passionate man, brash and enthusiastic, driven by seemingly impossible goals, many of which he actually accomplished. But he's also a petty, mean-spirited loner, egotistical enough to unilaterally give himself a promotion in the middle of the expedition. Without Wilkes' singularity of purpose, it's hard to imagine the mission being as successful as it was, but it's also hard to conceive a personality more poorly suited to leadership than the near-universally-despised Wilkes. Philbrick also skillfully reveals the insecurity behind the tyranny in excerpts from letters to Wilkes' wife, Jane. The accounts of the expedition's adventures are at various times exhilarating and tragic as the crew scales the volcanoes of Hawaii, becomes involved in a bloody war with Fijian natives, and struggles merely to stay alive while at the same time not killing Wilkes. Philbrick's compelling narrative and meticulous research provide a vivid picture of the triumphs and hardships of the exploration age. --John Moe
Book Description
America's first frontier was not the West; it was the seaand no one writes more eloquently about that watery wilderness than Nathaniel Philbrick. In his bestselling In the Heart of the Sea Philbrick probed the nightmarish dangers of the vast Pacific. Now, in an epic sea adventure, he writes about one of the most ambitious voyages of discovery the Western world has ever seenthe U.S. Exploring Expedition of 1838- 1842. On a scale that dwarfed the journey of Lewis and Clark, six magnificent sailing vessels and a crew of hundreds set out to map the entire Pacific Oceanand ended up naming the newly discovered continent of Antarctica, collecting what would become the basis of the Smithsonian Institution, and much more.
Customer Reviews:
Human Drama in Important History.......2007-09-27
With the publication of the author's Mayflower I assume this book will enjoy a revival. It's too bd I had to learn of it by its being the only thing of interest on the remainder table. When I bought it I'd no idea I would learn so much about one of the main characters, if not the main character, in this human drama, Charles Wilkes. As a student of the Civil War I have long been intersted in Lt. Wilkes because of his involvement, no his creation, of the Trent Affair.
If you are not interested in Wilkes as a participant in the later war, you will still find this a wonderful adventure tale. This is history come to life. Read this book if you read no other book by the author.
Philbrick is a master of this genre.......2007-09-26
I stumbled on Nathaniel Philbrick's book: "In The Heart of The Sea" and enjoyed it very much. This author has the rare ability to take historical records, diaries, narratives, and other documents and weave them into a prose style of his own that is gripping. "Sea of Glory_____"
is written for anyone who likes history, nautical based, and replete with characters that you come to feel you know after the reading. The troubled Commander of the US Ex. Ex., comes alive in the pages with deep insight into his psyche & human flaws. I would recommend this book to any reader. It truly is the "untold" story of the United States of America's attempts to send forth a seagoing expedition of exploration on the level of the more famed Lewis & Clark land expedition after the Louisiana Purchase. You will be amazed at the ongoing contributions this expedition has contributed to our knowledge of the natural world, including the origins of what is today The Smithsonian Institution.
What? Was Philbrick there?.......2007-08-24
Seriously, this is the fourth book I've read by Philbrick and I'm trying to figure out how he writes history so engagingly. When you read his work, you truly feel like you are witnessing the event as it happens with a God's-eye view. As a result you get absorbed in his telling of the story and learn while engrossed.
I think Philbrick accomplishes this little bit of literary magic by doing a huge amount of primary research, going through the journals of many of the story's characters and synthesizing a multi-dimensional picture of what went on. He then tells the story almost as if he were there. The result is truly impressive.
I had never heard of the US Exploring Expedition before reading this book and it kept me drawn in from cover to cover. The four year expedition was the first (maybe) to sight land in Antarctica, explored the mouth of the Columbia river, fought a battle in Fiji, measured volcanoes in Hawaii and brought back a collection of artifacts that formed the basis of the collection for the founding Smithsonian. Not bad for a single trip around the world. Throw in some nasty intrigue between the many officers on the expedition and you've got plenty of human drama to boot.
Give this one a read. You'll be glad you did.
Great Adventure I Never Learned About.......2007-06-08
Others have provided a better summary than I could, so I'll keep this brief. I've read a lot of history. I'm a history nerd. I watch the History channel a lot. I had never even heard of this expedition. Thanks to Philbrick for reviving this story for so many of us, and for doing it with great storytelling, inciteful analysis, and meaningful detail. Wilkes is a tragic figure, and like all tragic figures has his greatness and his flaws. This book has lessons on leadership, the desire for adventure, endurance amid hardship, mistakes to be avoided, and much more. Read this book for a fascinating story that has been sadly overlooked for far too long!
The Enthralling History Of A Largely Forgotten Expedition.......2007-06-04
One hears almost endlessly about the overland expeditions of Louis and Clark, as well as the other western expeditions of Fremont and others.
This book is the story of another expedition, the American effort to explore, map and ultimately claim parts of Polynesia and the Antarctic. The book deals initially with the polotical and organizational struggle to get the expedition going. Coceived under a Democratic-Republican (JQ Adams), opposed by the Jacksonian Democrats, launched under Van Buren, and eventually returning under the Tyler administration this expedition was almost over before it began.
One of the problems with the expedition was the search for a leader. Eventually this fell to US Navy Lieutenant Charles Wilkes. Author Nathaniel Philbrick goes into great detail on wilkes leadership style including the relationship between him and his officers. The Navy at this point in time had a block in promotions which led to many seamen not getting the opportunities they felt they deserved.
Drawn form the original source material, Philbrick provides a gripping account of the sighting and mapping of Antarctica, as well as an excellent insider's view of the inner workings of the expedition.
Excellent historical work.
Customer Reviews:
The Lost Expedition.......2007-07-05
'Sea of Glory' is Nathaniel Philbrick's gripping account of the United States Exploring Expedition. The USXX was a fleet of six (6) US ships that set out to explore and map the South Pacific. The fleet set out just before the mid 1800's and was captained by Charles Wilkes.
The story begins with the desire to explore the South Pacific and originally to find a hole into an underground land at the South Pole. The espedition had a hard time finding backing. When the government support final is given, a fleet commander can not be found. The job falls to Lt. Charles Wilkes. A young eager sailor, who is very experienced in mapping, but not it seamanship.
The book chronicles the journey of the USXX as they travel from New York, to South America, around the cape and into the South Pacific. The fleet then travels to within site of Antartica. There is some controversy as to who saw land and when. The USXX then travels to the South Pacific Islands (Fiji and Hawaii), and eventually the Northwest Territory (the future states of Washington and Oregon).
The book focuses on how disfunctional the crew and captains were. The USXX should have gone down in history as a great journey along the same level as the Lewis and Clark expedition. Areas were discovered and mapped by the USXX that were great achievements. Discovering the continent of Antartica in wooden sailing ships is a feat that staggers the imagination.
Unfortunately, the animosity of the officers of the USXX proved to amke this expedition a footnote in US history. The book does focus a lot of attention on Lt Wilkes and his egomanical control of the USXX. Enjoy the tale of the journey and discovery rather than the drama.
