Book Description
Women make up about half of the world’s migrants, so it is little surprise that the international migration of women has been attracting significant attention in recent years. Most agree that global restructuring increasingly forces a large number of women in developing countries to emigrate to richer countries. But is poverty the only motivating factor?
In Women in Motion, Nana Oishi examines the cross-national patterns of international female migration in Asia. Drawing on fieldwork in ten countries—both migrant-sending and migrant-receiving—the author investigates the differential impact of globalization, state policies, individual autonomy, and various social factors. This is the first study of its kind to provide an integrative approach to and a comparative perspective on female migration flows from multiple countries.

Automation Network Selection
ASIN: 1556178638 |
Book Description
This volume strikes a unique balance between process control system theory and effective application. Every major control system element, from sensors to final control elements, is discussed in the context of overall control strategies and system design. Each chapter emphasizes practical issues such as the use of standards and sound documentation for project management. Seventeen control experts give time-tested advice on the installation and maintenance of each system element.
There is a chapter on design and planning considerations for plant safety and ease of operation. The editors have included appendices to the text that readers can use as quick references on chemistry, electricity, and instrument laboratory fundamentals.

From an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control.......2006-07-09
This volume is part of the Practical Guides Series developed and published by ISA (formerly "The Instrument Society of America", later "The International Society for Measurement and Control" and now known as "The Instrument, Systems and Automation Society"). The Practical Guides were concived to bridge the gap between theory and actual practice, and the stress is placed on the actual experience of measurement and control practitioners.
I own this book. Its a good introductory reference on the topics associated with industrial control. The book covers all mayor aspects to gain a general overview of Industrial Control.
The text is organized as follows:
- Sensors.
- Analytical Instrumentation.
- The process and process control.
- Final control elements.
- Computer technology.
- Control system theory.
- Analog and digital control devices.
- Distributed control systems.
- Programmable logic controllers.
- Ergonomics and occupational safety.
- Project management strategies.
- Appendices on Instrument laboratory.
If you are already experienced on Industrial Control and you are looking for a more complete reference, with more emphasis in technical aspects and specific applications of Process Control you definitely will do better with Bela Liptak's Instruments Engineer's Handbook Volume 2 - Process Control.
A decent general reference book..........2001-06-26
I purchased this instrumentation and control text to study for the Professional Engineering exam in Control Systems Engineering (CsE). I am satisfied with the book and don't have any major complaints. The book starts with an overview of how measurements are taken, continues on to cover final control elements, then covers specifics about the design of industrial plants, computer technology, mathematical analysis, ergonomics, safety, drawings, and project management. Programmable Controllers (PLC's) and Distributed Control Systems (DCS's) are also covered. I am going to keep the book as a good all-around reference. The subject matter is useful, however, people wanting the "latest and greatest" technology information will find this '92 reference a bit out-of-date. (Personal Computers had a lot less power then!) My two minor gripes about this book are (1) There are a few significant mistakes in the figures and explanations that make the already difficult subjects even harder, and (2) there aren't any practice problems to work -- just a few examples in the text. All in all, though, this book is worth the money.

Description:
Salt and water transport external costs of irrigation are borne disproportionately by lower elevation farmers. The relationship between fields for an optimal Pigouvian tax plan varies considerably as the amount of available water changes, demonstrating that a simple rule cannot be relied upon. A numerical example demonstrates the optimal application pattern and Pigouvian tax plan in contrast to the sequential Nash equilibrium. Shadow values for water are used to argue that between distributaries, the second best optimum is unlikely to be equal allocation. Physical measures of soil state are also shown to be worse under the optimal plan, throwing doubt on their usefulness.
Book Description
The richness and diversity of Cuban birdlife features 354 recorded species that represent 20 orders and 60 families. The 21 living endemic species include the charming Cuban Tody, the striking and elegant Cuban Trogon (the national bird), the colorful Cuban Green Woodpecker, and the smallest of all birds, the Bee Hummingbird. This compact and portable field reference will help Cubans, visitors from abroad, and bird enthusiasts identify and enjoy the island's avifauna. The 51 color plates and 662 images accurately illustrate male, female, and juvenile plumages (in some cases for the first time). Many migratory species are depicted in both winter and breeding colors, providing a glimpse of many common North American birds as they appear when away from northern surroundings. In the comprehensive Field Guide to the Birds of Cuba Orlando H. Garrido and Arturo Kirkconnell share their vast wealth of knowledge about birds--and habitats--that are too little known.
Field Guide to the Birds of Cuba contains:
* Species accounts including habitat descriptions, similar species, range, status, nesting and feeding habits, and vocalizations.
* Checklists of endemic species and subspecies.
* Background on the geography, climate, geology, paleontology, and natural history of Cuba.
*144 maps that show regional boundaries and vegetative habitats as well as the local distribution of each species.
Customer Reviews:
Just what I needed.......2005-07-20
Good illustrations: excellent detail, good colour and size. Really helpful identification tips for an amateur,(me)without being patronising. Interesting geographical and historical information. And a manageable size for a field guide. I'm really looking forward to using it and am enjoying doing my "homework" before the trip.
Buy in advance.......2002-03-20
Excellent and vital piece of work for the average bird watcher in Cuba. Please purchase before travelling to Cuba, as in the country itself you'll be unable to find ANY fieldguide on birds!
What is that bird again?.......2001-08-27
Excellent and very scientific guide. The descriptions are excellent and all the information extremely useful. It's obvious that the authors are experts in their field. I found the plates top notch and, I'm sure, they will allow quick identification of any bird we see. A couple of defects: The common Spanish name should be included in the plates. Imagine the guide telling you "That's a siju platanero" while the plate only calls it Cuban Pigmy owl!But that is minor compared to the lack of cross-reference from the plate to the text. The other guides I have state the page with the information about the sighted bird. Here you must go through the index or leaf your way to the correct text. Other than that I really enjoyed the book.
The long-awaited Field Guide to the Birds of Cuba.......2000-08-31
Garrido and Kirkconnell's new field guide to the Birds of Cuba fills a niche that has needed filling since Thomas Barbour's The Birds of Cuba, 1923 (not a field guide). This book, however, goes far beyond where Barbour left off. Although untested by most birders, this new work has the potential to be one of the leading birding field guides. If the species accounts, range maps and illustrations prove to be accurate, it will be. The geographical information will be a great aid not only in finding the birds, but also in selecting transportation and appropriate attire. The section, Bird Habitats, (page 10) gives brief but informative treatments on the eco-zones of Cuba mentioning some appropriate plants and the birds found in these habitats. The Endemic Species list (Appendix) gives us insight into a fascinating avifauna. The Endemic Subspecies list that follows could include English names for the sake of parallel structure. I have a feeling that "the splitters" will in the near future add to the species list. The beautiful illustrations by Roman F. Company are enhanced by tantalizing vignettes of the Cuban countryside.
As a student of Cuban natural history for over 35 years, this book whets my appetite for Cuba even more. My first trip to this enticing archipelago, known collectively as Cuba, lies ahead and it will be with my copy of Field Guide to the Birds of Cuba under my arm.

Lonely Planet Watching Wildlife: East Africa.......2005-09-06
I recently took a wonderful trip to Africa and went on several game drives. We saw so many new animals that I didn't know existed. Two of my friends, also on the trip, had your book. This book explained about the animals and had such great pictures that were such a help in distinguishing the animals. I liked the small area map that tells where the animal is found. The organization of the book is so helpful and easy to find what you are looking for. I have read it over and over again and used it as a reference for my presentations.
Lonely Planet Watching Wildlife: East Africa.......2004-02-06
Organized in 3 sections: habitats, parks, animals. The sections are well organized, easy to find what you want and easily cross-referenced. Helped us tremendously in planning where we wanted to go and what we wanted to see in East Africa. Wonderful pictures, too.

Customer Reviews:
Good Job Harrop!.......2007-01-25
A great book for any level of fly fisherman. The stories and images will make you want to hit the river now!!! If you a tier, it will become a reference book for future patterns.
Certain To Be A Classic.......2005-06-02
Few anglers have had as impressive an impact on a single river as Harrop. Hidden beneath the tales lie an undeniable love of the Henry's Fork, its history, and its inhabitants. This book is sure to become a classic. A great read with much to teach.
Tight Lines,
Twig
Excellent, well done.......2004-05-31
This book is overdue but well worth the wait. The writing is excellent as are the color photos. For a flyfisherman who wants to add to his/her enjoyment, this book provides good information and flies. Yes, the book's focus is localized but the thoughts and flies are universal. A book to be enjoyed and re-visited.
Overdue, well done, but not alot new.......2004-04-20
Its nice to see Rene's excellent articles from the fly fishing jls in the US and Japan appear in hardcover. The collection is definately worth having for the angler/book collector. I am enjoying reading these artcles though the fly designs and patterns are no surpises - standard Harrop stuff. Well written and interesting, a must for the Hnery's Fork Angler and serious Spring Creek person. Buy it with Mike Lawson's spring Creek book, both are well done. Minor Cons: Could have used a detailed bibliography, more relevant pictures.
Book Description
In the best tradition of ancient wisdom literature, COSMIC MEMORYreconstructs from the akashic record events between the origin of the earth and the beginning of recorded history, including a core investigation of the origins, achievements, and the fate of the Atlanteans and Lemurians. These remarkable "lost" root races developed the first concepts of "good" and "evil", manipulated the forces of nature, laid the groundwork of all human legal and ethical systems, and defined and nurtured the distinctive yet complementary powers of men and women that brought humankind, many centuries ago, to its highest artistic, intellectual, and spiritual attainments. Through this discussion of our true origins, COSMIC MEMORY gives us a genuine foundation for our lives; allows us to realize our real value, dignity, and essence; enlightens us about our connection with the world around us; and shows us our highest goals, our true destiny.
Book Description
Thucydides' classic work on the history of the Peloponnesian War is the root of Western conceptions of history—including the idea that Western history is the foundation of everyone else's. Here, Marshall Sahlins takes on Thucydides and the conceptions of history he wrought with a groundbreaking new book that shows what a difference an anthropological concept of culture can make to the writing of history.
Sahlins begins by confronting Thucydides' account of the Peloponnesian War with an analogous "Polynesian War," the fight for the domination of the Fiji Islands (1843-55) between a great sea power (like Athens) and a great land power (like Sparta). Sahlins draws parallels between the conflicts with an eye to their respective systems of power and sovereignty as well as to Thucydides' alternation between individual (Pericles, Themistocles) and collective (the Athenians, the Spartans) actors in the making of history. Characteristic of most histories ever written, this alternation between the agency of "Great Men" and collective entities leads Sahlins to a series of incisive analyses ranging in subject matter from Bobby Thomson's "shot heard round the world" for the 1951 Giants to the history-making of Napoleon and certain divine kings to the brouhaha over Elián Gonzalez. Finally, again departing from Thucydides, Sahlins considers the relationship between cultural order and historical contingency through the recounting of a certain royal assassination that changed the course of Fijian history, a story of fratricide and war worthy of Shakespeare.
In this most convincing presentation yet of his influential theory of culture, Sahlins experiments with techniques for mixing rich narrative with cultural explication in the hope of doing justice at once to the actions of persons and the customs of people. And he demonstrates the necessity of taking culture into account in the creation of history—with apologies to Thucydides, who too often did not.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing and ill thought out.......2006-08-05
With a title like "Apologies to Thucydides," what I was expecting was a more anthropological view on Thucydides' material. What I got what Sahlin's shaky justification for his tenuous and, dare I say, boring thesis.
Within the first few pages I knew this book wasn't going to be what I was hoping for, but I stuck with it, only to be thoroughly confused at the random trains of thought expressed. It seems to me that Sahlins had a list of things to tie the Pelopennesian War to before he wrote the book, and just did whatever he could to connect them. The purpose behind this is dubious and isn't explained in a satisfying manner at all.
I just fail to see the value in this book. My recommendation: don't waste your time. The book I was looking for, as far as I'm concerned, hasn't come out yet.
Interesting but heavy on jargon.......2006-01-29
Marshall Sahlins uses two seemingly unrelated episodes in history to question the narrative form of historiography with which we all grew up. He compares the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Greece with the nineteenth century conflict between Rewa and Bau, two Fijian kingdoms. Both featured an expansive, sea-going empire versus a more insular, land-oriented opponent.
Sahlins makes a very good case for the conflicts being driven by geography and culture, more than great men. He uses the two wars to illustrate the differences between narrative history and the more modern cultural view. He even recounts the 1951 National League pennant race between the Dodgers and the Giants to illustrate his point.
Although I prefer narrative history, with its seeming movers and shakers, and its chronological descriptions of events. I have to admit that Sahlins makes very good points for "Understanding History as Culture and Vice Versa" as he subtitled this book. My only real complaint, and this extends to most works of this genre, is its intensive use of sociological jargon. Some sentences are simply unintelligible to a sociologically untrained, but otherwise literate reader.
That said, this is a good read, and certainly expanded my horizons.
