Book Description
In this accessible book, Gavin Kennedy takes a fresh look at Adam Smith's moral philosophy and its links to his political economy and his lectures on jurisprudence. The book provides a new analysis of Wealth of Nations, and argues that Adam Smith's intellectual legacy was coopted in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by economists pursuingnbsp;agendas that Smith did not advocate. It also provides a new explanation for the main mysteries about Smith's later life.

Book Description
The premier authority on organizational transformation takes his classic work to the next level, showing managers how to prevent a company from falling into a period of decline.
For three decades, Ichak Adizes, Ph.D., has studied the patterns of organizational growth and changes in businesses worldwide, from Bank of America to Domino's Pizza to small start-ups. In his breakthrough book Corporate Lifecycles, Dr. Adizes traced the typical corporate path from inception to decline. Now, in this long-awaited follow-up, he guides companies on the optimal path--and reveals how to sustain peak vitality.
Courtship, Infancy, the heady Go-Go years, and turbulent Adolescence. These are the stages every company goes through to reach what Dr. Adizes calls PRIME--the ideal stage of balanced creativity and discipline. At every stage, he shows how to anticipate and handle "normal" problems--whether with goal setting or managing employees--then quickly move on and up. Once in the PRIME stage, the author presents proactive measures for maintaining focus and vision, nurturing cohesion, and achieving "predictable excellence." He also offers strategies for avoiding the typical downhill path--starting with the Signs of Aging, such as risk avoidance; moving on to Aristocracy, where power and protocol dominate; and culminating in the final stages of decay: Recrimination, Bureaucracy, and Death.
Easing the pains of growing, MANAGING CORPORATE LIFECYCLES opens the way for every organization to thrive--indefinitely.

Customer Reviews:
Buyer beware.......2003-09-26
Shame on me for not reading the reviews. The information on the download version is readily available all over the net.
Avoid the e-book version.......2003-09-13
The hardcover and the e-book version should not be linked together because the e-book version is only 12 pages! Complete waste of money, I wish I could return it. I made the mistake of reading the review of the hardcover version (which is shown on this page too), and since I had already read the original book, I though I was making a bargain. The joke is on me... :-(
Helpful in sorting out a turbulent corporate adolescence.......2000-04-02
This book (an updated, improved version of Adizes' 1988 "Corporate Lifecycles") has given me an extremely useful framework for thinking about and improving the organization I work with. In the Adizes framework, my organization would be considered in Early Adolescence, and a turbulent Adolescence at that. What Adizes has helped me to more clearly see is that some of our turbulence is predictable and structural, just as each stage in the typical corporate lifecycle features problems that are normal (as well as problems that are abnormal or pathological). Furthermore, Adizes doesn't stop at diagnosis; he offers prescriptions for anticipating and addressing the tensions inherent in moving from one stage in the lifecycle to another. As a founder of more than one company, Adizes is also refreshingly candid about the difficulty founders face in helping their companies move through the stages. ("It's hard to see the picture when you're in it.") Adizes has helped me to articulate critiques and advocate solutions that I have long sensed dimly, but couldn't adequately pinpoint. Here's a great resource for your leadership team to discuss at a retreat or planning session -- and then to act upon.

Species Diversity in Space and Time
ASIN: 0521369304 |
Book Description
This book describes the natural processes that must be understood in order to manage and protect the Earth's biological diversity. The author begins with a clear definition of biological diversity and a summary of the types of diversity patterns found on Earth. Next he lays out a scientific framework for understanding the complex array of diversity patterns, including the distribution of rare species to landscape patterns visible from space. Many fascinating case studies of coral reefs, fire-maintained shrublands, prairies, and tropical rain forests illustrate the theories and models described in this book, including such fundamental issues as endemism, invasions, and extinction in temperate, tropical, and marine ecosystems.
Customer Reviews:
Highly Recommend.......2001-07-22
I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in understanding better the complexity of diversity and successional patterns on the landscape. This book offers a wonderful overview to the history of many commonly accepted theories in plant ecology and also presents new ideas and theories with examples from case studies. This book is a refreshing alternative to normal scientific textbooks and provokes the evaluation of many commonly held beliefs in the field of plant ecology. I also thoroughly enjoyed reading the update from the author regarding new experimental studies that support the dynamic equilibrium model and look forward to his 2nd edition.

From England, this is a clearly presented "cookbook " of ideas and example exercises. The book is divided into groups of related exercises, each exercise accompanied by a full explanation including the aids, teaching hints, advice on likely problems, safety and suggested variations. School Exercises adds variety and interest to lessons and riding sessions for teachers, horses and riders.
Customer Reviews:
School Exercises for Flatwork & Jumping.......2001-03-23
I have owned this book for 5 years and think it is one of the better, simplified handbooks for riders and instructors alike. It has clear, concise diagrams, explanations and ways to problem solve for each exercise, so that even a novice rider or beginning instructor could easily understand the exercises and the reasons for them. We were memebers of US Pony Club growing up and one of our primary focuses around horses was and is always safety. The author offers very helpful ways to deal with possible problems/outcomes during the exercises so that not just the "how" is covered, but the "why" as well. When instructing novice riders or children, this approach is particularly helpful. For someone schooling horses on their own, these ideas are most helpful in creating a positive experience for both horse and rider. I would recommend this book to any equestrian.

Book Description
Between 1947, when Jackie Robinson joined the Brooklyn Dodgers, and 1957, when the Dodgers and the New York Giants played their last season in the East, New York baseball teams appeared in ten World Series. In seven of those years, either the Giants or the Dodgers vied for the championship with the lordly Yankees. These were truly the glory years of New York baseball, when the city breathlessly followed the game in the tabloids rather than on the tube. And the New York Daily News, the nation's largest newspaper, had the best photographers, the best equipment, and the best field position to record the action, bringing the art of baseball photography to its highest pitch.
Accompanied by an evocative text by veteran sportswriter Vic Ziegel, the dramatic photographs (complete with their colorful original captions)-featuring such superstars as Robinson, Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra, Roy Campanella, Mickey Mantle, and Willie Mays-allow the reader to follow year by year the course of baseball's most exciting decade in the world's greatest city.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing photographs.......2007-01-17
The seminal book about the Golden Age of Baseball in New York. A must have for any baseball fan. The photograph selection by Claus Guglberger is sublime. I eagerly anticipate another release containing the photographs selected by this gifted photographer.
The Photographs Make The Book.......2004-07-09
There have been numerous books written on New York baseball, but, at least for me, it is the photographs that make this a unique baseball book. I have vivid memories of the World Series of the 1950's, and all except 1959 involved at least one of the teams in New York City. The New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers series were classics, and will always be remembered. I enjoyed the descriptive writing of New York Daily News writer Dick Young. When Duke Snider made a wide turn at 3rd base in coming home, Young wrote, "Duke, who is a poor base-runner for a man of his superior speed, took the scenic route home...He was out by some 20 feet." Many of the photos brought back the names of players and umpires of my youth. The photographs illustrate how small the dugouts were in that era. Fans are predominantly dressed in suit coats, ties, and fedoras. Also of interest are photos of fans leaving the park via the playing field, and photographers near home plate photographing the action. Photographs of Ebbets Field and the Polo Grounds show views from above the playing field in addition to close ups of the center field area of the Polo Grounds and the center and right field areas of Ebbets Field with the advertising on the wall are also of interest. I am a fan of the Detroit Tigers, but I will always have precious memories of those historic New York teams in addition to the arenas they played in. The text is nice, but it is the photos that make this book unique.
Brings back a great era in Baseball!.......2004-05-25
You don't just have to be a fan of New York baseball to enjoy this wonderful photo-filled book showcasing the great Big Apple teams of the late 1940's to the late 1950's. This wonderful book containing superb photographs from the baseball archives of the New York Daily News, is like a mirror through time. The large photos, (dont you just hate small photos in large books), showcase the players, (stars or not), stadiums, but above all action surrounding the great New York teams of 1947-1957 with a small but no less interesting text explaining each one. The most enjoyable thing about the book for me were the full-page sized photos showing all the action in ballparks, some unfortunately no longer with us (Ebberts Field and the Polo Grounds) and the pre-renovated Yankee Stadium. The nuances of these parks with their crazy outfield angles and advertising boards gives us an appreciation of what it was like to play or watch baseball in them back then. The shots of the fans who populated these parks also tells a story, of rabid fan allegience and spirited optimism. Any baseball fan will love this book as part of their collection. There is a brief text opening the selection of photos for each year that may be short but this book let's the photos do the describing. A fabulous book!

Hoffman Rings the Bell for teaching Hebrew Students.......2006-08-23
After perusing several books on Kabbalah mysticism, not letting them sink-in I went from Rabbi Kushner's Book of Letters and his Book of Words to this little jewel of Hoffman's mystical entry to 22 Hebrew letters. In his ten-page Part 1, he moves through the developing Hebrew alphabet from the North Semitic tribes more than 3500 years ago, to Ezra the Jewish Scribe of the 5th Century, to the Midrash, to the Talmudic Commentary on Exodus, to the 13th Century Zophar (Book of Splendor)!
When Hoffman arrives at the Zophar he reflects on the statement that, "God looked into [the Letters] of the TORAH and created the universe." From one of the early Jewish mystics, Abraham ben Samuel Abulafia he quotes the Hebrew letters as a means to arouse tremendous intuitive capabilities: "Look at these holy letters with truth and belief...[it] will awaken the heart to thoughts of godly and prophetic images." In Abulafia's approach he suggests that, "one begin to combine letters, a few or many, reversing and rolling them around rapidly, until [one's] heart feels warm."
While teaching dysfunctional children in their teens I began making good use of the Hebrew letters such as Yud, Reish and Shin... Yud for the words 'yom' or day; names as Yoel [Joel] Yoneh [Jonah] and impulse for good and evil: yetzer hatov and yetzer hara!
Also Reish as Holy Spirit, [Ruach Ha-Kadosh]; healing [refooah] and healer [rofeh]; Shin for words as Shabbat, Shalom and simcha [joy] and shana [year]. These last ones fit beautifully with the name of one of the girls-Kashanah! Not only is Hoffman's Jewel great for metaphorical teaching, it is an avenue to reach those inquiring, inquisitive, uniquely thoughtful Minds! For them to see the beautiful pictures created by Karen Silver is a Plus!
I strongly recommend for teachers of Special Education... Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood
A Must Have.......2005-12-22
If you are really serious about learning, this is a must have. Easy to read and above all, easy to understand.A big plus, it is enjoyable.
Excellent little book`.......2005-08-02
I have personally found this book to be spiritually enlightening. The author is obviously well versed in Kaballistic writings and philosophy. I find Mary Barker's review to be offensive and written from an uneducated point of view.
If you are looking at a fresh perspective on the Hebrew aleph-bet give this book a chance.
tiny glossy book that glosses over the facts.......2004-12-28
This book was written for people who truly do not know anything about the Hebrew alphabet. The book is tiny, the pictures of the letters are really pretty and big and shiny, and the writing is kind to the mind. Great gift idea for kids or for seekers who aren't sure if they want to be pagans or monotheists or atheists. Or for Jews to give Christians who have a lot to learn without offending them. It is a pretty gift book, not a scholary tome. Poeple have found it heart warming. The quality of the paper really is exceptional. You could frame the letters. I am a Jesus freak and have given this book as a gift and it has been loved by Jews and Christians and atheists.

Approachable Knowledge.......2006-05-22
Letters of Light combines a kabbalistic look at the Hebrew letters with an approachable style of writing, including personal anecdotes, to explain the meanings behind the letters. Rabbi Raskin is a witty and learned teacher whose style makes the Letters of Light easy reading for most, including those with little or no background in Kabbalah or Hebrew. This book is a must for the Jewish library, a great resource source on the Hebrew letters.
Language is the House of Being.......2006-05-11
As the German philosopher Martin Heidegger put it, "Language is the house of being." In other words, we can shape our lives and reality by virtue of how we speak and listen. If that is true, then Rabbi Aaron Raskin's expert inquiry into the essence and meaning of each letter of the alphabet is a powerful -- and surprisingly practical -- tool for getting at the essence of what it means to be human, and bringing that essence into our daily life and work. A fascinating book by a real "Mensch."

This extraordinary, massive, and mind-boggling 1,300-page book combines essays, manifestos, diaries, fairy tales, travelogues, a cycle of meditations on the contemporary city--and complex illustration--with work produced by Koolhaas' Office for Metropolitan Architecture over the past twenty years. This almost overwhelming accumulation of words and images illuminates the condition of architecture today--its splendors and miseries--exploring and revealing the corrosive effects of politics, context, the economy, and globalization. In some ways, this is the "Medium is the Message" of 1990s architectural discourse: guaranteed to be hugely influential in the coming decades, but grossly misunderstood by those who have not read it. The core arguments it makes about metropolitan architecture--accepting complexity and lack of centralized control--are similar to those of Kevin Kelly's Out of Control: The New Biology of Machines, Social Systems and the Economic World. Very highly recommended.

An acquaintance had a copy of this so I looked through it during a dinner party. Blah. Bah! It's full of facetious, egotistical monoliths (from the edifices to the book itself) that offer nothing but themselves to the rest of the urban experience. Le Corbusier of the late 20th century. Gawd, I hope Koolhaas doesn't take that as a compliment.
Uma boa aquisição!.......2007-05-08
Realmente atendeu as expectativas. Um belíssimo livro em um bom preço e no prazo de entrega informado.
thick and dry.......2007-01-27
So much information that it took too long to get through it before most of it wasn't relevant any longer.

There's a terrific line in Breakfast at Tiffany's. George Peppard proudly hands neighbor Audrey Hepburn a copy of his just-published book. She has no idea what to do with it, so she puts it on a shelf next to a vase, backs away and says "Doesn't that look nice?"
This book is a lot like that. A self-conciously designed object for the homes of style consumers who already have the right clothes and the B&B Italia furniture. A prop for the still-life they want to inhabit. If they ever got around to "reading" it, they'd discover to their great relief... it's NOT a book to be read in any strict classical sense.
It also reminds me of a New Yorker cartoon where one associate asks another, "Read the first few pages of any good books lately?" The age of the short attention span is not going away any time soon. This hefty grey slab is easily recast as the shiny new headstone for verbalized intelligence.
As Kracauer holds it, there's nothing wrong with framing a culture via fragments, but I have plenty of qualms about advancing one's own ideas that way. And I'm suspect of ideas that trowel on style in the abundance seen here. If I could believe Bruce Mau's intentions were more than just trying to look new, (This 'look' now permeates architecture publications) I'd have more respect for this, but it was obviously calculated as a totem of style and style-suffusion.
For better or for worse, the book got noticed, the industry was distracted by the pretty surfaces and the ascent of Koolhaas is a done deal.
If you want to actually READ a book full of Koolhaas' thoughts, skip this and get a copy of Delirious New York.

Possibly one of the many great books on architecture of today with plenty of references and clean graphics. A must have for all architecs or if you just want a wonderfully beautiful book for your home or office.
