I was very disappointed: Very simple, not practical - some analyses and suggestions are almost hilarious (e.g. the interpretation of graphs at the end). No practical background. Of no use for practical challenges.

Excellent resource.......2002-05-11

This book is right to the point with some very different tools to measure a business' future. I am a Certified Turnaround Professional and I found the introduction and definitions of Turnaround very useful since most people think of turnaround all wrong. I am getting a copy for an associate since I was so impressed.

Excellent introductory guide to coastal invertebrates that is easy to carry on a cord, and is waterproof. Doesn't have every species, you may see, but does have the ones most likely to be encountered.

This is not a book. It is a laminated card........1999-09-12

This is a single page, plastic laminate card. It has small hand-colored pictures and limited notations on about 100, primarily intertidal or shallow water, species. Notations give size of the critter and where it might be found, in very small type.

Love this book!Finally an English language book on this art.Very straightforward,easy to follow,well edited,and very informative on Portuguese history as well.Being of both Filipino and Portuguese ancestry,with experience in Filipino stick methods I was anxious to see what the Portuguese had to offer and I was not disappointed.I would compare the baton part of jogo do pau closer to French le canne than Filipino arnis or Latin American garrote larense though.Perfect for those into western martial arts,medievel martial arts,stick and/or sword fighting,or Portuguese culture/history.

Here is an excellent book on the little known are of Jogo do Pau. The author has obviously dedicated a lot of time and effort in studying the art and finding the way to communicate about its value. I find the book very well conceived and realized. The order of presenting the information is meant to help the progress if you should try practicing the techniques, and I'd say it achieved that goal. Which is not a surprise, as the final section of the book is actually on the methods of training in aartial arts, and I think is a must read for any instructor of combative sports of fighting arts. It shows Mr. Preto's true understanding of his work and his genuine wish to give others an opportunity of taking advantage of his knowledge and expertise.

JOGO DO PAU.......2006-11-18

I read Jogo do Pau by Luis Preto, and I rate the book five stars. JDP is an ancient Portuguese Stick Fighting Martial Art and science of muscle memory, and I am impressed with the book. Luis, I look forwards to JDP on DVD. JDP is a fascinating martial art and I would recommend this book to any martial artist.

Excellent book on staff fighting.......2006-07-02

I'm currently rereading this book, and I'm glad I bought it. For someone interested in the western traditions of staff fighting, this book is definitely worth the price. What it teaches is how to use a 5 foot staff primarily for swinging strikes, with thrusts used to a minor extent. The system as presented here is fairly simple: strikes, parries, and (refreshingly) almost as much on strategy as on technique. There are also chapters on taking on multiple opponents (three techniques and strategies), and on mindset and training.

So, why four stars?

Mostly, it's a comment about production values. I was particularly intrigued by Figure 4.3, a three page montage of a changing hand parry that is never mentioned in the text. Despite the claim in the introduction that everything is being revealed, a close look at the pictures reveals several techniques that aren't discussed. To me, this is not a reason not to buy the book, but it is a comment on the quality of the editing.

Finally, I probably should comment on Mr. Preto's posture on the cover picture. Yes, he does always have his knee over his toe, and I've always been taught that was a no-no. In this book, he always has this posture, and even comments at one point that this is a book about effective stick-fighting, not healthy stick-fighting. While I won't argue with jogo do pau's effectiveness, I will point out that his teacher (the grand master of the system) and most of his fellow students use a more conventional posture, with the knee behind the toe where itbelongs. I would love to see a rewrite of this book in ten years, to see if Mr. Preto has changed any of his opinions.

As it stands, this is a fascinating book, and well worth the price. It is not perfect, and there is definitely room for a sequel.

Good teaching from a master. But Jogo do pau isn't something you can learn from a book. Training from a master is necessary.

I can't believe there is only one review for this great, great book. Absolutely the best I've read among its kind. I borrowed a copy from a friend, but after I finished reading chapter 4 and was able to pull off a good query letter, I bought my own copy. Much better than "The Sell You Novel Tool Kit", which didn't help at all.

I want a Larry Haun tee shirt, beer mug, calendar, tool bag and special edition saw. It is a pleasure to read a book that was written by someone who knows what he is talking about. It doesn't get any better for me. I'm not kidding, this is one of those rare books that teach a trade in an inspiring way. For what I'm up to, I will never need to look at another framing book.

Good book. Could be better........2007-05-14

Mr. Haun certainly knows a great deal about carpentering and he conveys a lot of that knowledge in this book; however, terms are introduced prior to being defined or explained, which makes it a bit difficult to extract the information. If one has the patience to read the entire book, the terms are eventually explained, but it requires you to go back and re-read the parts where these mysterious terms were initially used. A little help from a professional writer/editor would enhance the value of the book.

I am doing an addition and wanted to frame it my self, knew a little about framing but not enough. Great book on the way to frame and how to build walls. highly recomended. There is a video that goes with this book buy it also. I went back and referenced both the book and the video through out the framing of our addition.
