Product Description
In this thoughtful and ambitious book, Franchee Harmon explores the challenges of change, evolution, and growth. Stepping away from the idea that purpose is defined as the reason for a company s existence, she suggests that purpose has to do with individuals being able to create meaning within their environments. Using examples from popular culture and drawing on studies from the sciences, Making Purpose Work explores how we go about creating meaning using the five elements of purpose: self-identity, expectations, unity, fear, and instincts. If you are interested in understanding your purpose in life, Making Purpose Work is the perfect alternative to books that simply provide rules for how not to get in trouble. Rather, it provides guidance on how to incorporate your purpose into creating a successful career path. With new insights into how beliefs affect our actions, this is the first work that communicates how belief plays out during the decision-making process. It serves as a compass, helping us understand the pitfalls of decision-making that blind us as we choose the varying detours along the road to success. Inspiring life-altering change, Making Purpose Work breaks down the factors that drive our motivation, helps us come to terms with our resistance to the unknown, and addresses our reluctance to get back on the path when we seem to have lost our way. Harmon provides knowledge rather than prescription, which helps readers take responsibility for improving the outcomes and meanings created in their lives.

It seems so simple, yet..........2006-03-24
Don't we all want to figure out our purpose? Reading this book has brought me new understanding about myself and my career. I have always taken my "purpose" for granted. Making Purpose Work explains things that I thought I already knew. By doing so it exposes various dimensions of ourselves and organizations that contribute to our overall sense of wellness. This book will be beneficial to anyone who reads it, no matter where your place is in an organization. It helps you to better understand your situation and ultimately your purpose there in.

Customer Reviews:
There's more to marine life than learning its name!.......2006-12-28
Kozloff's book is a classic and a bible for anyone who studies intertidal and coastal organisms in the Pacific Northwest. Professor Sean used this book when he took Kozloff's Marine Biology class at the University of Washington and it has been one of his favorites ever since. Kozloff's insights and anecdotes on marine organisms, accompanied by his encyclopedic knowledge, blend to create an outstanding book for identifying and learning more about marine life. If you simply want to know the names of the organisms, there are plenty of cheap field books out there. But if you want to truly know and understand marine organisms and the role they play in the ocean, then this is the book for you.
Not for you if you just want to know "what is this?".......2003-04-25
This book is really geared more toward the academic. I would not find it useful as a field guide, though it makes for fairly interesting biological reading. It is not laid out in a "field guide" fashion, with species listed and illustrations for each provided. It would be frustrating to take the kids to the beach at low tide and attempt to use this unless you are very well acquainted with your marine taxonomy. Most species are not identified by a common name, and the color plates and illustrations are not necessarily near the species text.
This book reads as a textbook for students rather than a useful tool for laymen who just need to know what critter they just found under a rock, and want the information before the tide comes back in.
A great guide for someone who wants to see for themselves.......1999-05-19
Though published in the early 1980s, this book does a wonderful job of introducing the active naturalist to the nearshore marine life of the Pacific Northwest. This book includes good illustrations and photographs, descriptions of where marine flora and fauna live and what they do there. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to go the seashore of the Pacific Northwest and figure out what they are looking at. Kozloff has been there and seen everything he's writing about. I use this book as my primary text when I take students to Puget Sound, Washington, for my marine ecology field course. A top notch field guide!

Customer Reviews:
Excellent field guide.......2001-08-28
This book is perfect for anyone interested in herps in the Maya Forest. Complementary to Campbell's field guide, but also includes great line drawings, range maps, and characteristics to distinguish from similar species. Also, better photos than in Campbell's guide. If I were to buy one field guide for the area, I'd choose this over Campbell's.
An exceptionally well laid out field guide.......2001-02-09
A Field Guide To The Amphibians And Reptiles Of The Maya World is a comprehensive survey of the crocodiles, turtles, lizards, snakes, frogs, toads, and salamanders found in Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico. This exceptionally well laid out field guide allows the easy identification of all native and introduced species of amphibians and reptiles of the region; is enhanced with 180 color photographs and 180 drawings; provides valuable techniques for field identification; includes a glossary of herpetological terms; and for each species gives a full description, natural history, and geographic distribution information (complete with maps). There are suggested readings for those who want to know more about a particular species, even descriptions of the most characteristic vocalizations of the reptiles and amphibians surveyed. A Field Guide To The Amphibians And Reptiles Of The Maya World is a "must" for any personal, professional, or academic library collection of natural history and herpetology reference works.
Amphibians and Reptiles of the Maya world.......2000-08-23
Julian C. Lee's field guide of the amphibians and reptiles of the Maya world is excellent. The color photographs make it easy to identify the animal in question; the maps give the reader the distribution of the form; the text gives a short synopsis of the characters and natural history of the taxon; the photos, line drawings, and the PRICE make it all worth while. Any person visiting the outback of the Yucatan Peninsula needs a copy of this book. All Nature Touring Companies should have it available for their clients. A wonderful addition for any professional herpetologist bookshelf.

Paradise.......2004-07-16
A good book for a very small area. Excellent colour photographs.
Informative, and interesting.......1999-04-22
This is a great book focusing on northern Guatemala, southern Yucatan and Belize. It has great pictures, and some excellent text on identifing characteristics, with a key in the back. I will be using it in the Carmen del Playa and Merida areas, and will let you know how I feel about it after the trip.
The area map is not the best, but that is a minor problem. You ought to have a map of your own anyway.
Customer Reviews:
Very informative pocket sized book.......2007-10-18
Now finally a good book about float fishing. The author provides good description of the sport. He does a good job at letting the reader know what equipment will be needed and how to fish them. He also does well addressing the concerns of west coast steelheaders as well as great lake steel headers.
Would recommend for beginners and those new to float fishing.
This book makes me want to fish!.......2005-12-03
Float Fishing for Steelhead: Techniques & Tackle was a great read written in an uncomplicated, straight-forward way. Vedder is good at talking to his readers about fishing as if the exchange was between two friendly fisherman out in the wilderness somewhere in between casts. His argument about the virtues of float fishing are excellent and he draws comparisions to the other methods of fishing and very reasonable conclusions as to why someone would want to float their line in a wild river full of snags and obstacles as opposed to bouncing on the bottom. It makes perfect sense and it WORKS. Vedder knows what the fish are doing when they come up the river and how to get that grub right in front of their faces, and he tells you how to do it in a language that is very easily understood. Its a quick read, and he touches on the other methods of steelheading just barely, but enough so if you want to try throwing a few lures when all else is failing there is a bit of guidance. Float fishing is not the same as bobbing for worms. There's a lot more to it than that and Dave gets into detail without making things complicated (something, I might add, that holier than thou fisherman tend to do way too much.) Using a float is an excellent way to: KNOW what your line is doing, SEE the bite, AVOID the snags, PLACE your offering in hard to reach areas, LAND some big fish, and ENJOY the whole experience. Thumbs up for Dave Vedder!

Publish By Number.......2007-07-08
I'm a published author in the process of establishing my own petite publishing house. The Publishing Game is a quick and easy read. If you follow the directions given by Reiss then execute them according to your own realistic schedule you'll undoubtedly become a publisher in little or no time. This book is complete with resource lists and a fair share of welcomed anecdotes. Definitely worth your investment in time and money.
The Publishing Plan........2007-04-26
This book is in the very simplest of terms a publishing plan. It has 30 chapters and 238 pages of how to get your book published, assuming you have already written it in 30 days. Each chapter is considered a day and everyday if you follow the game plan laid out here you will get your book self-published in the alloted time.
This book was really interesting and opened my eyes up to a lot of things I had no clue about. It covers more things then I had questions about. I have not read any other books on publishing so I can not compare it to anything else and the reason for 4 stars, but I would say this book seems to be pretty complete. There is so much in here I am going to just list some of the subject matter.
Self-publish, goals, subject matter, target audience, title, cover copy, pricing, publication date, business plan, financial plan, company name, software, legal structure, legalities, ISBN, website, how to sell your book, copyright, cover, editor, galleys, etc etc. Lots of info here. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about publishing their book because there is a lot more to know then I ever imagined.
She "Gets It!".......2006-05-07
Fern Reiss "Gets It!". As a new author it is clear to me that Miss Reiss gets it from start to finish. Every idea in her book is concise, doable and will get results.
You will not use every idea in her book, some just don't fit your market, but the ones you use will work...hands down...no question. I have done my research and I know that Miss Reiss has done hers. Buy it, use it, benefit from it!
Mick Hager, author of MONKEY BUSINESS
7 Laws of the Jungle for Becoming the Best of the Bunch!

A Must Have Book for Beginning Publishers.......2006-01-31
In my consulting practice, I am constantly trying to help fledgling publishers get off the ground. Fern Reiss' books have become a valuable tool in that effort. The first thing I tell many would-be clients is to buy these books, and read them -- several times. This saves me time and effort, and them a great deal of money.
The books in this series (companion volumes include Find An Agent in 30 Days and Bestseller in 30 Days) are quickly becoming standard references because so many people agree about their quality. Each volume organizes the necessary tasks into 30 approachable bundles, with clear, concise instructions and explanations. There are no important details missed, and nothing extraneous to distract you. Ms. Reiss is not only knowledgeable, but also an inspiring writer and speaker.
This book is a must for the aspiring publisher.
Well presented "How-To" book.......2005-11-22
You know, I am very cautious of publishers reviewing publishers or people in the same industry complementing each other. That is why I wanted to submit this review as I am just an average Jane/Joe.
Regardless of whether you are thinking of WRITING a manuscript (you do not have it yet) or you have a manuscript - this book is a MUST for you. The book shows "naked truth" of publishing process, details that one would hardly consider.
I love discouraging books. This book will test your commitment to the idea of writing and self-publishing. Do you think of pregnancy difficulties, about changing diapers and not sleeping nights, about giving up your career before you get married? That's the precise comparison. Or, perhaps you think of roses, clean sheets and coffee in bed every morning? Here is the truth, right in this book: returns, dealing with inventory, fulfilling orders, dealing with bankruptcies of your buyers, low profit margins and much more.
It is NOT about how to write or how to promote your book. To learn how to promote, how to write letters or the book itself, or how to get your books reviewed, you should look somewhere else. The title here starts with "PUBLISH". The topic is narrow, the book is very informational.
Processes well in conjunction with Dan Poynter "Self-publishing manual".
Good luck.
